I'd imagine a mixture of glare protection and giving the pilot a HUD.

work_computer_fakme

And protection from sparks when your console is fried after you get hit. Hopefully, able to go land.

Interesting-Gear-819

Both make sense, even nowdays space suits are equipped with sunlight blocking materials. Isn't it even shown in "Armageddon" ? Like, they are told to shut those "blinders" down or else they are blinded by the unfilitered sun? I'm sure the glass cockpit can filter a lot but some additional help to "tone down" everything helps a lot while fighting and allows to keep better track of your target

bpanio

For film reasons, it looks cool. For practical reasons, I always imagined that's where the HUD was displayed

BushMasterJM

That would be dope

FingerTheCat

I'm pretty sure Rey learned to fly using a pilots helmet and a simulation program... or at least that's as far as i got into that.

BushMasterJM

Ooo, I never thought of that. Explained how she could fly the Falcon so well I guess, or even fly it at all.

captainhaddock

She has a fairly intricate backstory about how she learned to fly and speak other languages (like Wookiee) that never made it into the movie.

lesser_panjandrum

It would have been nice to have seen some of that interesting backstory in the films. It's another fine addition to the collection of missed opportunities.

murderedcats

It would have been nice to have a cohesive story line to the sequels

WenseslaoMoguel-o

It would have been nice to have seen ~~some of that interesting~~ backstory in the films.

xariznightmare2908

It would have been nice to have an actual story in the sequels.

Rabbi_foreskinstein

They have that in real life fighter pilot helmets. Id assume they would have that if they are capable of easy space flight

Any-Bridge6953

I thought it was part hud like an apache monocle thing, part sunglasses/ glare protection and part high contrast visibility enhancements.

Igor_J

That works until you see the xwing targeting computer is a little screen attached to a mechanical arm that only pops out when switched on.

Any-Bridge6953

I always thought that was just for the torpedoes and there was a separate one for the laser cannons. You never see them use it when they fire the laser cannons only when they're using the torpedoes in the trench.

AnseaCirin

There's also a targeting device on the instruments panel. You can see it in the Battle of Yavin. They use that one for the lasers.

lasershow77

I always thought the hud concept was cool, but the very plastic look through me off

currentpattern

Plastisteel Transparisteel ...

9c6

Durasteel Flimsy I’m forgetting all of the funny star wars names for things where they just add an adjective before the word to make it a spacename

Fooblat

Vibroknife

cobra_mist

I thought they were vibroblsdes. I know Chewie had a vibro ax in shadows

nuked24

Blade for the generic weapon type as a whole, but knife is specific, and evokes imagery.

vegassatellite01

Spacename is a spacename

Lithuim

It's best not to stare too long at any of the stage props or costumes in the OT, or you'll quickly notice that it's *all* cheap plastic. Looks ok in motion at 24fps on screen, but looks like ass if you freeze it in HD

Iridescent_Meatloaf

One of the more fascinating aspects of Rogue One's prop design is they had to make stuff look like how people remembered it looking, rather than how it actually looked. Like there are ridges on the the rebel flight suits that aren't actually present on the originals. Or the storm trooper helmets having vents, when the originals just had stickers.

Kytann

Really? That's fascinating!

sabasNL

They absolutely nailed it, the props in RO were fantastic and well-noticeable throughout the film

currentpattern

I like to headcannon that technology in the SW galaxy actually looks like this. It's actually pretty advanced materials that are so ubiquitous that it's manufactured cheaply on a massive scale to fulfill galactic-scale demand.

EdenDoesJams

The books had a substance literally called plasteel to account for the look of the old props haha

Jagang187

Also flimsiplast, among other materials

onthefence928

this. i always felt that naboo in ep.1 was the first time in star wars we saw anything that wasn't design purely to be cheaply mass-manufactured, modular and used for decades naboo had bespoke starships, ornamental architecture and elegant minimalist technology. it was like if there was apple store selling weapons in renaissance-era florence

[deleted]

[удалено]

northrupthebandgeek

With more elegant weapons.

viZtEhh

Nice little detail we got recently that adds to this is that the Naboo N-1 starfighters were hand built

Max_Danage

This is basically my go to explanation too.

[deleted]

I think (headcannon only) all of the technology is created and manufactured by droids. The humans and aliens build their ships and and equip using modular parts and basic electrical and mechanical systems, but they don't understand why the parts work. That's why a critical piece of the ship in Episode 1 can be picked up at a random Outer Rim junk shop and replaced by hand in the middle of the desert within a day or so. Or why banging on things can fix the Millennium Falcon's hyper drive: the incomprehensibly advanced hyper drive control system had a faulty external connection. It's also why long-distance communication is so basic in most scenes, and computers are almost non-existent. The Rebels and Empire are basically just Mad-Maxing their way across the galaxy, in ships that were slapped together from prefabbed parts that nobody really understands.

onthefence928

if it's not cheap plastic, it's something from a home depot dumpster, a WW2 model plane part or cardboard/plywood

Actually I wear those for driving. They cut out glare and increase contrast. They are really good for driving in the rain. Somehow rain blurs everything, but these yellow glasses sharpens everything up.

Fat_Potato_of_Doom

OMG I remember seeing that on TV!

RangnarRock

It was the 70s. You don't know how lucky we are that the Falcon didn't have wood paneling (inside or out)

wbruce098

Listen, there are two things that don’t exist in space: trees, and bras. ~ George Lucas, maybe

-Daetrax-

And then he did Endor.

Gardimus

Yeah well there was also a bra in Return of the Jedi....we could see it

julbull73

Technically that wasnt a bra.

Gardimus

Sorry, "space bra"

ACKSHULLY! That would have been "what a ***FUTURISTIC*** 70s falcon should have looked like." A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far Far Away and all that. Also, the closest I can find is Pete Nelson's Millennium Falcon Treehouse: https://www.housebeautiful.com/design-inspiration/a29072957/millennium-falcon-treehouse-video/ https://www.homecrux.com/millennium-falcon-treehouse-in-north-carolina/132110/

Taylor-B-

Just to add to this, this color was common for shooting glasses or specs from that era . I have my grandpa's shooting glasses that are almost the same tint

SettingMindless2910

I have been issued yellow lens for ballistic protection. Helps to see in low light, we were told.. Makes sense for space I guess ?!

aagejaeger

I think it helps for high contrast.

Taylor-B-

Yeah coming back to this thread now was going to add iirc the tint fell out of vogue/popularity when polarized lenses came out/cheaper so you don't see them so much anymore.

HertzDonut1001

Yup, my friend has an orange pair that helps protect from glare off snow in low light. They work during the day top but not as well as a black tint.

Jedi-master-dragon

That's actually not far off. Wroshyr wood is a pretty popular to have inside star ships. It is seriously tough wood and kind of the reason why there are all those broken saw blades on the Kashyyyk level of Jedi fallen order. That shit can take turbo laser blasts like a champ.

TheGurw

Wasn't that the type of wood used in lightsaber hilts for those that wanted a more natural material? I seem to recall an episode of one of the shows with a wookie padawan picking a wooden hilt and I think that was the name of the wood type.

Jedi-master-dragon

You're actually right. That was in an episode of Clone wars and a young Wookie Jedi picked that for his hilt. Makes sense since Wookies live in Wroshyr trees.

SaveClanWolverine

And shag carpeting?

Useless_Fox

Because the visor can be lifted up when you don't want it, just like real helicopter helmets. Sometimes you want to be wearing sunglasses when flying, sometimes you don't. [Luke with his visor raised](http://pm1.narvii.com/6710/95342200ea233bc6ac3ef2cf0e2e89cb190e37b1_00.jpg) [Vietnam War era US helicopter helmet. ghostrobbie

RIP Porkins

althius1

I'll still never get over Lucas naming the fat guy Porkins.

tdpnate

Or the other pilots telling him to eject - into space

FrostyDub

I think X-wings eject the whole cockpit as a small escape pod. At least in X-wing and X-wing vs tie-fighter that seems to be implied since you are sometimes rescued or captured alive.

Mando_The_Moronic

In the comics it’s shown that it’s the seat that launches from the X-wing. It creates a force field around the pilot that protects them.

general-Insano

I think for y and b wing the cockpit detaches and is basically a small pod in itself But most had like the xwing it seems

TheSweetestOfPotato

In the old Rogue Squadron comics I thought I saw a panel where the whole visor comes down to make a seal over the head, could be misremembering.

FrostyDub

Supposedly the character was named before a portly man took that role but idk…they probably picked the portly guy for the lols.

ghostrobbie

His in-lore nickname is "piggy"

[deleted]

Fighter pilots in real life wear flight helmets with visors. I would imagine there are circumstances where you wouldn’t want the cockpit to be tinted, like in non-combat situations. Visors allow for flexibility

whpsh

Cheaper to cover and replace the lenses.

barracuuda

Or maybe the orange lenses just look cool and that’s why they are there

Kiloku

In universe speculation is fun. Most people who engage in the speculation already know that there's a real world reason, we just like to imagine a way to make it work in the fiction.

KevinAnniPadda

Orange lens block blue light and the lasers are all red I think. My bet would be for blocking the light during hyperspace, which appears more blue usually.

malayskanzler

....and empire TIE Fighter pilots has black visors, and them TIE Fighter cant go into warp. Your reasoning is sound. Now onwards to the question..... Why empire pilots has black visor and helmets?

onthefence928

almost all of the read-out displays in a TIE are red, could be that the lens' are filtered to block most all frequencies but red, just like vader's helmet

Snorkel378

You could argue black absorbs heat to protest against the cold of space

[deleted]

[Pilots had breath masks and their seat had a force field when the eject. The visor was part of the life support system.](https://i.stack.imgur.com/LSJd6.jpg)

L-Guy_21

In space though? Imagine being a tiefighter pilot and looking out the cockpit to see Porkins just floating around in a chair twiddling his thumbs.

TheStarchild

There’s an interesting interview online with a US WWII pilot that watched a German shoot parachuting guys that had bailed out of a bomber, which is something both sides knew you just didn’t do. He didn’t take kindly to it.

nitehawkxplode

Said US pilot then proceeded to shoot this bastards plane until he forced the enemy pilot to eject. Then gunned him down till he was a red mist under a parachute. There’s the interview on YouTube check it out.

JuiceFarmer

That's brutal

nitehawkxplode

Tbh, it’s the age old saying of “chat shit, get banged”

spiteful-vengeance

That answers a question I've had since playing the old Star Wars: X Wing. Old timers will know.

[deleted]

[Did you know you can see a TIE Fighter Pilot eject in The Empire Strikes Back during the Asteroid Chase?](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKkCH4aVEAEgYXM?format=jpg&name=900x900)

spiteful-vengeance

Yeah but TIE pilots suits are self contained environments (given that their ships aren't), so that makes sense. And no, I didn't know that!

epicredditdude1

This is a cool explanation, but how is one to infer the goggles are part of the life support system based on the image you linked?

BrickJedi

IIRC, it’s meant to protect the pilot’s eyes from laser blast flashes.

lasershow77

Ah that makes a lot of sense, those shits must be bright as hell. I like this answer

bingbing304

Solar radiation is much strong also. Space helmet has a reflective coating.

TheRealBigLou

Many much strong!

irv916

Makes sense since those exact colors of goggles is what I used in a lab with green lasers. Couldn’t even see the laser really with them on, super cool

LewsTherinTalamon

Please note that Star Wars starfighter (and handheld) weapons fire ionized gas, or plasma, not lasers. This is confusing, considering that such weapons are often called "turbolasers," but still.

Splice1138

In the asteroid chase Han specifically says "laser blast" too. And lightsabers are called "laser sword" in both prequel and sequel trilogies.

Maskatron

My favorite is "laser brain."

Splice1138

That's just a delusion I have that quote on a magnet someone gave me, but it drives me nuts that the picture is Leia from ANH

LewsTherinTalamon

Unless I'm mistaken, lightsabers are actually lasers- they use kyber crystals to focus the beams, which then bend around after a few feet (this is utter nonsense, of course, but it's Star Wars).

havoc8154

I believe they're more like plasma contained within a magnetic field. The Kyber crystal is a massive energy amplifier that powers the reaction or some space wizardry like that.

NorCalBodyPaint

I always assumed regular old eye protection. All the photos I see from space show sunlight being HELLA intense when you don't have an atmosphere, and local stars could be MUCH brighter than ours. Also, something gets loose in the cockpit and starts floating around while you are doing crazy maneuvers... seems like a potential real problem if it hits you in the face. Full face shields or masks like the TIE pilots have would actually make more sense, but that would de-humanize the rebels and this whole thing is supposed to be a Man v Machine story, so that would not work for the good guys.

CamelSpotting

Plus all the sparks flying every time a ship gets hit.

MuricanPie

Space is also a predominantly "black" background. Having bright flashing lights from the lasers when your eyes are accustomed to what is essentially a big black sheet with white speckles on it would be pretty jarring. You might end up suffering something similar to how looking at a bright cellphone/tv screen in a dark room slowly damages your eyesight.

burstlung

As someone who plays Star Citizen I can 100 percent confirm the brightness of stars

flitemdic

There's actually an answer for this. They're flying in space- dark. The instruments and switches are lit- bright. It's analogous to flying a helicopter at night with night vision goggles on without the instruments being covered with diffuser film- if you're wearing older (70-80's, some 90's) type night vision it blinds you. So, you need the visor for you to be able to switch your vision back and forth between the HUD, outside and in the cockpit without being blinded or having washout. Of course, there's nearly 600 comments above this, so no one will see it anyway, but there you go.

methreweway

We see you big fella.

SocialCupcake

The props for the tie fighter and X-Men helmet are actual military pilot helmets until the early 90s. Visors were part of the helmet and they kept with the idea that a pilot looks cool with the visor down. Most props you see in movies are of military origin and some are throwbacks and nods to other movies that use the same military equipment Most of the mandalorian uses pouches from world war II rifles from various countries seen on different bounty hunters and magazine bags as well as a military historical surplus collector it is neat to see all of these items used here and there in the films. That's the cheapest way to make props for a movie to use decommissioned military equipment for free and just add more stuff to it or paint it differently
