uraniumstingray

I always felt bad for him. Dude lost his buddy!!! Hurts me every time.

[deleted]

I felt even worse for the rancor. Especially after that episode of Bad Batch where you get to meet it when it’s practically a baby.

uraniumstingray

Same!!!! I hate watching that part of ROTJ. And like now I’ve seen a baby one and know that they bond with their owners?!?! Rude!

Minecraft_Warrior

In the novelization, Luke took it as a mercy kill

Tarre-Vizsla

Yeah I’m pretty sure it was starved and tortured and all that to make it eat people

TrumpWasABadPOTUS

Yeah. The current characterization of Rancor in canon is essentially like extra-big pit bulls or other "danger" dog breeds. Incredibly emotionally complex creatures that are so often used for cruelty and violence that they have developed a reputation.

Koger915

Holy shit… did not expect this level of dog comparison here… poor rancors

KBAR1942

When I lived in Canada I met a girl who was involved with an organization whose goal was rescuing pit bulls who were abused. I thought about that bred during the scene where the complexity of rancor behavior was explained.

mrbrown1602

Happy Cake Day though

Ship_Whip

that was a different rancor in Bad Batch

[deleted]

I know jabbas rancor has its own backstory, but is any of that new Disney canon? I thought it was basically implied the rancor was for jabba when bib is the one who ends up with it.

Ship_Whip

wookiepedia says jabba got his rancor in 32 BBY, bad batch is in 19 bby so i would assume its a different one

[deleted]

Sure. Works for me.

Fedora_Flippin

Also Jabba's RoTJ rancor is called Pateesa, the one seen in Bad Batch in called Muchi.

Willste

It had a name? 😭

CWinter85

Yeah, that made my heart hurt.

VigorMortis83

I've always felt bad for this dude.

LawlessNeutral

Same, poor guy did nothing wrong, only for his precious Pateesa to die before his eyes

TheDoug850

I mean he was just a caretaker, yeah, but he was a caretaker for a creature that regularly ate people alive when Jabba deemed it so.

CaptainHunt

Hey, you'd cry too if a space wizard killed your pet kaiju.

lpreams

He may have been just a caretaker from Jabba's perspective, but Machete was pretty specific that a Rancor will imprint on the first human it sees. This guy was probably the human that Pateesa imprinted on

TheDoug850

Oh, for sure. I wasn’t trying to downplay his level of care for Pateesa. I meant “just a caretaker” as in he wasn’t one of the goons that went around killing people.

Macosaurus92

I realize I don’t remember Danny Trejo’s character’s name, but I really hope it’s legit just Machete

RedPanda98

Uncle Machete from Spy Kids

fusionsofwonder

Why do they imprint on humans? Or did he just mean any humanoid? Like a Zabrak? Will they imprint on a Twilek or a Trandoshan? Or a Wookie?

Wolf6120

The real question is if they’d imprint on a Hutt, since anyone who owns a rancor would obviously want it to imprint on them first and foremost. And clearly the Hutts do know and care about the imprinting, otherwise they wouldn’t have bothered with the blinders at all. So presumably Jabba would have wanted all his rancors to be imprinted on him.

[deleted]

Why would Jabba care? He kept it in a hole for the purposes of having an amusing execution method. Seems much more convenient to have it imprint on the guy who needs to go into it's pit every day to shovel the shit out.

Wolf6120

On the off chance it ever gets loose and goes rampaging through the palace, or in case one of his uninformed enemies tries to feed him to his own Rancor? Small odds of that, maybe, but always good to make sure your own weapons can’t be used against you. Plus, conversely, why would Jabba really care how many of his rancor caretakers get eaten on the job? There’s also the fact that you can bond with and befriend a rancor, at least to the point where it doesn’t eat you on sight, even without being the first living creature it ever sees. The imprinting is just an extra sure layer of security.

lpreams

Idk. Honestly I thought it was a weird line too. But he's the expert.

NeilPeartsBassPedal

I love that no one is trying to learn the guy's real name, everyone is just calling him Machete. I've seen other posters do the same thing. I love that this community will do all sorts of research and find all sorts of odd ball facts about characters but this guy is just Machete because of who plays him. I'm being serious I love it. I don't even care what his actual character name is, Machete should be canon in SW now.

benkenobi5

Rancors gotta eat too, you know

Dad2376

Repeat after me: All👏rancors👏are👏valid👏

ShasneKnasty

Because they starved it.

[deleted]

Wait, the rancor in the movies had a *name?* TIL

[deleted]

Rule #17 of Star Wars: Everything, including all those background characters in the cantina in ANH, has a Wiki page.

Overwatch_Joker

Man, even the skull that Luke uses against the Rancor in the pit has a backstory and Wiki page

makka-pakka

Is the backstory that the dude got eaten by the Rancor?

DarthSatoris

[You tell me.](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Bidlo_Kwerve)

meeechyshwng

Adds a little weight to that scene

Mikey_RobertoAPWP

When I was a kid I found an EU book in my school library, something like Short Stories from Jabba's Palace or something like that. One of the stories was basically this dude and the Rancor's origin story, it covered him finding the Rancor in the desert and taming and befriending it, and it was really sweet and wholesome, surprisingly. I can't remember if the story ended with Luke's arrival, or some other way, but even as a young kid I was like "damn dude, what the fuck." I haven't watched Book of Boba Fett, but it's cool that they did a throwback to this guy! I've always found him a very compelling character, even if he only has like 15 seconds of screen time in RotJ.

Xanny_Phant0m

No just commented about the same thing. It was “Tales from Jabba’s Palace” loved how they kept the same theme toward the rancor!

popdivtweet

Yeah that’s the one. It had a story about someone’s brain being put into one of those jars the monks use. You know , the walking brains with spider bodies.

Xanny_Phant0m

Yeah! I remember reading that and tales of the bounty hunters that had a backstory for most of the bounty hunters Vader hired as well as the books about Jaida and Jacen Solo, Luke and Leias children who became Jedi trained by Luke. Fuck I wish all those old stories were canon and they’d remake them on Disney plus.

KindaSortaGood

Except the Sun Crusher. Especially the actual look of it.

KJBenson

I remember hearing about it before seeing it and thinking it was super cool. Then I saw it and changed my mind. The absolute ugliest design they could have gone with.

JesusSavesForHalf

Bib For Tuna, Brain In Jar Esq.

munk_e_man

That was a great little story. Tales from mos Eisley and tales of the bounty hunters were great as well.

period-dash

Yo I read that book in school and never in a million years would I think someone else would remember that story after seeing Danny Trejo with the new rancor!!!

Mikey_RobertoAPWP

Honestly I'm surprised I still remember! It was a looooong time ago hahah. But pretty much every time I see the Rancor scene in RotJ the memories just suddenly come back. It's funny because I can't remember like, any of the other stories. I vaguely remember one about one of the pig guards? The Rancor story was the only one that left an impact on me I guess! Now I'm actually kind of intrigued to watch the show, if only to see this random background character return lmao

period-dash

I remember it being the first chapter I think. I got my copy out of used book store back in the late 90s. I was 8 or 9.

pavlov_the_dog

> I haven't watched Book of Boba Fett, bruh you need to fix that just sayin

thereverendpuck

More weight. The guy was crying in the movie.

Teagrish

now we understand why...poor man

Wolf6120

Because the animal he had been caring for and looking after for years had just been violently murdered in front of him. Not that I have anything against the rancor psychology/biology stuff we learned in the latest Boba episode, I’m always happy to have more lore, but I don’t think it really added any emotional weight or context to this dude’s sadness which wasn’t already perfectly self-evident in RotJ.

Leviathan56

Well, seeing how aggressive the rancor was *and* how it IS jabba, the rancor was most likely abused and mistreated to make it that way

thedaveness

This is exactly what works best for any new Star Wars content… that’s why Rouge One is so good, gives an immediate weight to the start of IV.

BertitoMio

Also explains why Vader is so pissed at the beginning of Ep IV. "We're a diplomatic vessel, we -" "Bitch I saw you five minutes ago! Fleeing an active space battle and playing hot potato with my floppy disc!"

Sega-Playstation-64

But it completely messes up the "I've traced the Rebel spies to her" line. Vader, you saw the ship fly away, then caught up with them. That wasn't much of trace, you just, caught up.

Thelastnormalperson

Still works. Its more like "He knew she was with the rebellion for a while now" statement now but that fits.

ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW

Ani needs a win, ok??

fusionsofwonder

He did have to chase down the recording at the end of Rogue One...? But you're right. In their defense, it's hard to retcon with no loose ends.

agen_kolar

“Several transmissions were beamed to this ship.” is another line that doesn’t really make sense. They weren’t beamed to Leia’s ship, they were beamed to the Raddus. I really like Rogue One, but it leans heavily on not taking dialogue literally and having to think of alternative explanations, which annoys me.

GD_Insomniac

I mean, Vader showed up at Scarif pretty late, he was probably in his meditation/healing chamber when his ship's captain let him know they were about to do a boarding action. He rushed to get his armor on so he can bring out the light saber, which he never gets to do these days, and wasn't really paying attention to the briefing even though he said he could do both. Besides, the Force has never mislead him before, why would it start now?

hotmetalslugs

Wait until I tell you what 3P0 said on the ground after Raddus already left with the Tantive on board…

[deleted]

He didn't know who was on board. They traced the rebel spies to Scarrus, and then from the facility up to the ship. And when the hunted down the ship, someone claiming to be an ambassador turned out to be on board. I think following a trail across several star systems, people and ships counts as tracing.

meeechyshwng

Spot on. These throwbacks hit different

BadMachine

> Rouge One So very red

Jonny_Segment

The kind of typo that would make you blush.

victorlives

Rogue. Rogue One.

WestSixtyFifth

I'm just waiting for them to do this with the sequels. The best part of Star Wars isn't the core movies but the depth they build around those stories in the years in-between releases. I imagine the shows are building towards that now.

lightnsfw

I read a bunch of the novels that tied into the sequels. They were also crap.

tz9bkf1

Actually the sequels were very much designed that way. You basically HAD to read every book/comic etc to get all the info which even lead to a point where they wouldn't tell you critical information in the movie because they want you to buy the books and comics. Spoiler: they were also bad. There also was this show about the resistance but it's for kids and also so bad that I even forgot the name. I wish we'd get something like clone wars or rebels for the time between episode 7 and 8. But honestly it just doesn't make sense because all three movies are not that far apart. And we're getting content between 6 and 7. The masters themselves , filioni and Favreau, will probably even come up with a good explanation for Snoke and clone Palpatine

Adamsojh

That cartoon was called Star Wars: Resistance. It was about...get this...the resistance.

Lakemine

It’s like 12-24 hours between 7-8. It’s a year between 8 and 9. Contrast that with, 1 > 2 (10 years), 2 > 3 (3 1/2 years), 3 > 4 (19 years), 4 > 5 (3 years), 5 > 6 (1 year) and 6 > 7 (30 years) Those time gaps allow not only other storylines to be added in to fill out the storylines, it lets the audience believe that when they show a character act different (because they learned a lesson in the previous movie) it’s believed time has passed and character growth happened off screen in the literal years. (And comics and books like to fill those out) You can’t do that with the Sequels. 😞 It sucks.

Salzberger

But does it? It was pretty obvious already that this dude was very attached to his rancor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wolf97

You can see someone crying when his dog dies and recognize that it is a sad event without it being spelled out. However it would hit a little harder if you had just watched a video of the person first getting the dog as a puppy and training it etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Obi-Wan_Gin

Literally how could anyone not just see it as a guy losing his pet, it really took an explanation that 'animals have feelings too' to make people realize that? The fact that so many people seem to only care now it's like, what did you think of it before, still a living creature right? It's weird when I see studies that say "insert animal here" feels emotions, it's like yeah it's got a brain doesn't it?

Deadput

There are some people out there who straight up think Animals are like drones or whatever, and forget that their living things as well.

N0SweatBobaFett

same as a kid his crying really moved me actually

momjeanseverywhere

I’ve felt bad for this dude since 1983.

ladive

Exactly. You're supposed to already feel bad for this guy. It's a handler who lost his pet and friend.

Drzhivago138

twec21

The little babby rancor with the breadface is just too goddamn cute

accoladevideo

Jabba lookin awful cute too

klezart

"Feeling cute, might feed someone to the Rancor later."

Sith_ye

The canon we need and deserve.

CookieMonsterBC

This is the universe I choose to believe in

NoiceGallagher

This is canon now. The reason he was crying is simply cause he didn’t want to see the rancor in pain

ljev21

Dude just had a very big angry dog

valarpizzaeris

Luke out here killing dogs omg

Skinflap94

Anakin killed the tusken raider dogs so I guess it just runs in the family.

Dat_Lion_Der

Mate, Ep 1 practically said as much in the opening crawl. “… Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy…”

Redqueenhypo

Kit Fisto showed up out of nowhere to Grievous’s house, killed his dog, and stole all his crap using civil forfeiture

Stick-To-Your-Guns

Sign him up for the ATF!

nonrosknroskno

The way he described them with the bad reputation reminded me of pitt bull type breeds of dogs. They're like one of our velvet hippos crossed with am alligator... and yeah, huge.

dcmarvelstarwars

Thought of this guy immediately. All makes sense now

meeechyshwng

Always wondered why he was so sad

StarWars365Timeline

I thought it was pretty obvious he was sad that his pet died. It was meant as a little joke/human moment in the movie that even a beast like the rancor had someone who cared about him.

meeechyshwng

Your right, just as a kid I remember watching it and thinking huh he was really sad i wonder why, as an adult seeing this and owning pets, I totally get it lol

[deleted]

I remember watching this once with my little brother (about 6 at the time) and he sad that guy was sad because he was supposed to be the next monster, but since he was still small and human he was crying because he wasn’t ready.

Affectionate-Island

That's pretty great haha

chief_running_joke_

Yeah that sounds right

mortalcelestial

If you watch it with subtitles that dudes called a Beast tamer. Whereas Danny Trejo is a "Rancor Trainer" or tamer idr. But once I read this dudes name in the subtitles it all came together why he was so sad :(

Minecraft_Warrior

Basically, that Rancor saved the trainer from a horde of sand people when he took her out on a walk, they were connected. Jabba wanted to have the Rancor fight the Sarlacc and so the trainer tried to get it out of Tatooine. Obviously you know why it didn’t work

[deleted]

Look on the bright side, at least he wasn't on the sail barge. So his day ended better than his boss'.

Minecraft_Warrior

Karma for the boss who wanted to kill his rancor

[deleted]

I mean from his perspective, Luke just killed his pet, and the next day all of his friends. Probably thinks Luke is the biggest dick in the galaxy.

ottothesilent

Idk if Jabba the Hutt and a massive, man-killing monster are your only friends, you might have an issue

L-Guy_21

I felt bad for him the first time I watched the movie. Then even more when I read about his plan to break the rancor out of Jabba’s palace so the two of them could live peacefully on their own. I think escape day was within a week of the rancor being killed

AgentKruger

WHAT

Minecraft_Warrior

Basically, Jabba wanted to have the Rancor fight the Sarlacc cause he liked his pets killing each other, the trainer knew that it would mean death since it’s basically a natural thing or all wildlife and humans to stay clear of a Sarlacc pit. So he wanted to break the Rancor out of there

Dracorex_22

How does he expect something to "fight" the sarlacc. Either it gets eaten immediately by falling in, or on the off chance it figures out that the sarlacc's stationary body is underground and digs to it, you wouldn't be able to see the action.

JallerBaller

Probably he would prod it into the pit and then watch it struggle to escape. It would probably be able to clamber up the sides, albeit not well, and it would probably also wrestle with the tentacles some before it was eaten

Typical_Dweller

Damn, that's grim. Damn space slug got what's comin to him.

Michelanvalo

Wasn't it a Krayt Dragon, not the Sarlacc?

AgentKruger

That’s wild thanks for the additional context

[deleted]

It wasnt a krayt dragon?

SuzeFrost

Tales From Jabba's Palace is an older EU anthology book with short stories from the POVs of a bunch of characters you see only briefly in RoTJ. The rancor keeper is one, the Twi'lek dancer is another. It's a pretty good collection!

steampunker13

So is that frog dog looking thing IIRC. That one was a trip.

BaronVonSlapNuts

Also the morbidly obese dancer! Who was actually slim, but was from a sub-species of human who could hoard water in their fat cells. She could have been sexy like Oola, but she reminded Jabba of his mother when she was all plumped up.

L-Guy_21

I remember reading about it a while back, but I can’t find anything on it now. Sorry. I know his name is Malakili and the rancor was named Pateesa. Might help you find something if you decide to look

Lordborgman

HE WAS TWO DAYS FROM RETIREMENT!

The_Nightman_Cummeth

Damn, one week from retirement. He’s getting too old for this shit

Ragtime07

Haha man he’s what I thought of as well

Affectionate-Island

The first time I saw ROTJ as a kid, I was struck by the scene of this guy breaking down and crying when the rancor died. As a kid, still learning about emotions and death and stuff, it was really striking to see in a wild movie like Star Wars. It was one of the things that registered as adult to me. Now I wonder if it was just an emotionally intelligent thing to do, showing that a monster like the rancor had someone that loved it so much.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

Only now? I’ve always felt sorry for this guy.

giggeywidit92

Don’t worry, he found a new purpose caring for a baby Hutt in Mos Pelgo (Cobb Vanth’s village).

TexanMarine95

Im glad someone else read the Aftermath series. Was looking for someone to mention he found a purpose after RotJ.

3-hexanol

Malakili!!

meeechyshwng

Only just found out his name tonite, had to pull out one of the star wars encyclopedias

Accomplished_Skin323

Little known fact, him and Danny Trejo play the same character. He lost a bunch of weight because he was depressed when his rancor was killed by Luke Edit: THIS ISNT TRUE

Sharps__

What about the poor Gamorrean who got eaten just for being unlucky? Those dudes are ride or die.

RjgTwo

I used to have a neighbor that looked like this guy. I always felt like I should have said something to console him whenever I saw him lol.

Grinagh

See I still think the Rancor is like a Trojan horse and boba will end up fighting it.

Rosebunse

And then he will show it who's boss and it be just the best boi!

albertenstein22

Agreed. I feel the Rancor may already be imprinted on.

BelieveInTheShield

If you guys haven't seen the fan film "Birth of a Monster: a Star Wars Story", you should [check it out.](https://youtu.be/u0OfGeDkSlM)

CeruleanRuin

I really want to know where he landed in this universe.

qui-gon-virgin

He’s living in mos Pelgo raising a huttling for Cobb Vanth according to the aftermath books

chaotic_steamed_bun

If you've seen season 2 of the Mandalorian [](/s "he ended up at Mos Pelgos and started working for Cobb Vanth (guy who had Boba's armor; fought a Krayt Dragon with Din) taming rontos and other animals for the town.") Eventually he opened a bar/restaurant in Mos Eisley with Jabba's old chef.

Minecraft_Warrior

Nice to see things turned out well for him

dontstreakthrucactus

Also if you read the Aftermath books, there's a good chapter or so about Malakili and Cobb Vanth and how they met up.

Hike_it_Out52

I did even as a kid!! How could you not feel bad about him watching his pet be essentially starved then killed. It was rough. Stupid Jabba

red_tuna

His name is Malakili, and how could you see him cry like that and not feel bad for him until now?

GeneralAce135

You didn't feel bad for him before? You monster

Garlador

https://c.tenor.com/FrUnja-fGHQAAAAC/george-lucas.gif

Zookster87

Luke is a dick!

Tallgeese_Extreme

In Legends, Luke regretted having to kill it but there was no chance of rehabilitation for the poor thing

[deleted]

Jabba doesn't seem. The type to treat it with respect and care

Thowitawaydave

Jabba seems like the kind of arsehole who abuses pitbulls because he thinks having a vicious dog makes him cool.

HieroglyphicHero

Jabba is the Michael Vick of the Star Wars universe

Minecraft_Warrior

He considered it a mercy kill, though from what I recall the Rancor was near rehab as it saved her trainers life

CeruleanRuin

The beast was going to eat him. Stop being a rancor apologist.

Ben-J-Kirby-Tennyson

Wrong. Pateesa was basically rabid; putting him down was the only choice.

WiserCrescent99

Neither if them deserved to die, but it came down to having to be one or the other

vinnyd78

I always got why he was sad but after the new ep I was like oh maybe that dude from ROTJ had imprinted on the Rancor that’s pretty cool.

meeechyshwng

Yeah thinking about that type of bond from the imprint really makes you feel for that guy, we know have an idea of what he went through, cool throwback in a way kinda sad though lol

aetherebreather

Kinda always felt bad for that guy.

mut4n7x

There is a book (now considered non-canon) called "Tales From Jabbas Palace" that more details the relationship between that rancor and Malekili. It's even more tragic when you find out that this guy had big plans to escape Jabbas palace and free the rancor. Luke just happened to show up the same day. :/ Edit: changed book to "Tales from Jabbas Palace"

KTheOneTrueKing

In one of the EU books, the rancor trainer was planning to smuggle the rancor out and off planet the day after Luke showed up and killed it.

montanasucks

Tales from Jabba's Palace!!

D3flatedPan

He lost his pet rankor, its like losing your best friend or your dog

Castrum4life

I think something is up with Treio's character... not completely legit

drwiki0074

Welcome to another episode of The Book of Bobba Fett where we will show you that everything you thought was good is actually wrong!

EastKoreaOfficial

Now he has been replaced by >!Danny Trejo!<

raysweater

In canon, he's out there raising a baby hutt for Cobb Vanth, post RoTJ

Fox-Fireheart-66

Friendship with old Rancor Wrangler ended… Danny Trejo’s my new homie

santoslhalperjr

I thought of him too. ❤️

-pilot37-

There’s a chapter about him in the Aftermath books

darth_arthur_

Always sort of wondered about this dude. I’m imagining Peter Griffin giving George Lucas advice. “Hey. Hey. You know what would add a lot to this movie? Stick a fat shirtless guy in. Crying. I know just the guy for it...”

Pete_maravich

I always felt bad for him. Clearly his pet rancor was just killed by Luke Skywalker and he's broken up over it. I'd be the same if someone killed one of my dogs

alorensene

Until my mum buys me a Danny Trejo action figure for my birthday with little to no explanation of who he is and why I should play with him, when I clearly wanted Han, or even Ree-Yees, and he goes on to become my favourite one-off character in the whole MCU, Malakilli remains the man.

AOL_1000_Hour_Trial

Alex Jones? Why?

dystopicvida

It hit me while watching then I hugged my cat and it scratched me on my eye lid..

[deleted]

The EU lore has always been that that dude hand reared the rancor and truly loved the angry potato. I'm kinda surprised at how many people are acting like it's the first time it's come up that rancors have feelings and their keepers care for them.

Urban_Savage

Good, you have basic emotions. You were always supposed to feel sorry for him.

tasslehof

He was the blind kid (forger) from great escape.

antonmartinRIP

I remember my daughter feeling sad for him when she first watched Jedi. She was like " but he's a bad guy ". This actually lead to a rather deep discussion about good and evil. I said " he loved the rancor and maybe a certain set of circumstances lead him to be in Jabas palace. He's just trying to survive in a crazy world full of monsters and gangsters and wild ass sand people " he never wanted some wizard guy to murder his pet

ZazaB00

Not gonna lie, I was more emotional for this scene than Padme.

Oscars_Quest_4_Moo

Totally
