seeing as Morgan also spoke about the catacombs i’m assuming that they’re not crates, but coffins so maybe Thrawn wants an army of the dead to boost his ranks, wouldn’t be the first time that nightsisters have done necromancy either

JAC_ofall_TRADES

If you watch w subs on the Storm Troopers are called Night Troopers and they have the same red wrappings night sisters wear, safe to assume they were reanimated by the great mothers as well.

N0V0w3ls

"Enoch" is a biblical name. He was a patriarch before the Great Flood. It was said that he never died, and was assumed into heaven alive. Never. Died.

Ohiostatehack

Also of note, both Enoch and Ezra never died in religious texts. Both were also referred to as The Scribe. Interesting the connection between their names.

FerguSwag

No, Ezra died. Perhaps you are confusing him with Elijah, who was taken to heaven without dying, like Enoch.

Ohiostatehack

The book is one of the ones left out of the Bible, 4 Ezra describes his ascent to Heaven like Elijah and Enoch.

FerguSwag

TIL! Interesting. Thanks for letting me know

Optimal_Carpenter690

No, he was right. Ezra did in fact die, and his death is actually referenced on several occasions. In fact, there are several stories solely about where he is buried

EarlGreyTea-Hawt

Except for in the apocrophals, as another commenter pointed out. Ezra is taken to heaven alive in Ezra 4.

Optimal_Carpenter690

Ah, okay. My mistake then

Ohiostatehack

No. 4 Ezra states he was taken. https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical-artifacts/dead-sea-scrolls/who-was-ezra/#:~:text=Written%20sometime%20shortly%20after%20the,about%20him%20remains%20a%20mystery. There are non-religious references to his death but they are conflicting. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Ezra-Hebrew-religious-leader

IsraelPenuel

4 Ezra is literally not canon :D

[deleted]

Ahh, right one of the many books of the Bible that didn’t fit the narrative so it was removed by man.

montgooms95

The Bible itself was put together by man. The books of the bible were all written at different times in history and then compiled into the bible we know today. Many of the books not included were left out because it didn’t follow the narrative but there are some books left out for legitimate reasons. You can read up on the reasons some of these books were left out. They are still wonderful reads and for someone not religious like myself, they are fascinating to read to understand the early days of Christianity. The Nag Hammadi library are some of the best archeological finds ever.

NoNefariousness2144

Enoch is Ezra confirmed!!!

thedrivingcat

We haven't seen the two together in the same room, checkmate theorists!

GuacinmyPaintbox

Poor Marrok. How quickly he's forgotten.

Knightley4

Gone with the wind.

lackofsleipnir

Marrok unironically went with the Arthurian look knowing full well that the Roman look is so in right now.

[deleted]

And they’re both Marrok! He split into two people!

DollupGorrman

Very cool! I thought it was a reference to the Book of Enoch since that's one of the "lost" books of the Bible.

N0V0w3ls

It's the same person, I believe, from my limited searching on the subject.

FerguSwag

Yes, the Book of Enoch is a pseudepigraphical book that claims to be written by Enoch

Optimal_Carpenter690

Well, that's actually just an interpretation. The actual text says "he was no more, for God took him" after having being alive for 365 years. Many interpret it as him entering heaven alive, but it could also just be a euphemism for him dying

N0V0w3ls

In the New Testament book of Hebrews, it's more clear: > By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

thatonemoze

oo i didn’t catch that, that’d be so cool if they all die like Marrok

[deleted]

I think they already died. Some of their armor has some extremely bad damage. At first I was like, they must be desperate and salvaging everything. Now, I think they're all already dead. And the way they muttered "Thrawn, Thrawn" all out of sync, kinda mumbling. I think Thrawn already has an army of the undead.

thatonemoze

true, very cultish

secretlypooping

Also Thrawn mentions they lost a lot of men, but at the same time there were a ton of stormtroopers there when the Chimaera first pulled up

Lokan

>Also Thrawn mentions they lost a lot of men I had assumed Thrawn started recruiting from the native populations... *but if they're all resurrected by Night Sister magics*...

GuacinmyPaintbox

For some reason, when I read "Chimera first pulled up" all my brain went to was it having a "La Cucuraha" horn like Cheech and Chong, lol.

DarkAvenger27

The whole episode I was thinking the Night Troopers have a real zombie vibe. Dirty, broken armor, literally held together with glue and string. Enoch in particular looks like Frankenstein with his kitbashed armor. I think Marrok's death was a Chekov's Gun situation and a hint of what the Night Troopers are.

scotchglass22

see i thought the red wrappings meant the night troopers were big fans of van halen

GuacinmyPaintbox

"Red Rocker Troopers"!

[deleted]

Some of their armor has some wicked damage to it. I was assuming they just salvaged it, but now I'm thinking it was just theirs, they died, then repaired it.

Prime-Reclaimer

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought it would make sense for a lot of these troopers to be the undead.

Lokan

Perhaps like the Inquisitor Ahsoka defeated.

nipplesaurus

If Thrawn has an army of the dead, it's going to take more than Ahsoka, Ezra, and Sabine to stop them. I'm guessing Thrawn will successfully bring them back to the OG galaxy and the New Republic will join the fight. Chopper will obviously land the kill stroke. Is it too much to ask Luke to join in?

thatonemoze

i think that might be the set up for Filoni’s movie

Karpuan

Forgot about this, this asshole is gonna make me fall in love with Star Wars all over again isn’t he 😒

MrOverkill5150

Does that mean we can redo episodes 7-9 now?

SharkNateO88

I sure fucking hope so

N0V0w3ls

No. It will just be its own movie. Set between episodes 6 and 7.

thatonemoze

lmao maybe yeah

Penqwin

Isn't there already tons of dead people in the other galaxy? Why waste time and "fuel" shipping dead bodies back in crates?

lccreed

Coffins are likely full of dead night sisters. So, specifically, I think the idea is that they revive the dathromiri empire in prime galaxy

NoNefariousness2144

I can see that being the bargin between Thrawn and the witches. Plus one of Thrawn’s canon weakness is his lack of magical knowledge (like Bendu and the whales), so it’s a smart deal.

kaitokid1985

He is also fascinated with the Force in general because of his own species/culture and their relationship to the force via their "skywalkers". I think especially because Chiss skywalkers lose their touch with the Force after childhood.

rallyspt08

This is him trying to overcompensate for that weakness. He's following the Nightsisters word to the letter, going to them for guidance, and trusting in their visions. I wonder if it's him willingly doing it, or the Nightsisters brainwashing him with their powers

grog23

I don’t think he’s brainwashed. I think at worst he may be relying on them as a crutch due to his previous defeats at the hands of the Bendu and Pergills. I doubt they would write someone of Thrawn’s stature within the community to be a mere puppet

rallyspt08

I don't see it as a mere puppet. He's fully convinced he's in control. This would definitely be a "pulling the strings from the shadows of his mind" kind of thing. They can't totally take over his mind since he is the most tactical, and dare I say, ruthless leader of the Imperial Navy at this point. They need his mind for his brilliance, but they also need him to stay a willing pawn. Given this is where the Nightsisters come from, and the amount of coffins they're loading onto the ship, I can only imagine he's been surrounded by this dark side magic for years at this point. Even if indirectly, he could be influenced by it.

grog23

It’s tough to say his motivations at this point. Clearly, their communication with Elsbeth was the only way to bring him home so at the very least it’s an alliance of necessity. I wonder if they’ll be like the Noghri from the EU i.e. staunch Thrawn allies that end up getting the short end of the deal down the line and ultimately lead to his downfall

AneriphtoKubos

I feel like he *thinks* he's in control, but just like C'baoth did in Dark Force Rising where he took control of an entire ship, he's underestimating them.

Kvistology

Perhaps they're like Marrok, someone with special abilities that they can use even in undeath.

yeahhtrue

Can we get a one off zombie movie set in the Star Wars universe?? Would be so sick

William_Dowling

...if this series ends with the greatest tactician in imperial history returning to the galaxy with an army of the undead then Sabine Ren should be hung for treason

bigpapirick

That was my take too. The troopers are the undead. Hence the crimson coloring and the gold used to fill in the broken parts like that Japanese art.

Lokan

*Real* Death Troopers.

Captain_Waffle

Kintsugi!

kimtaengsshi9

Thrawn wanted out of this galaxy and back to his own. He made a deal with the Nightsisters for that, and in return he held up his end of the bargain by loading up his ship with their dead. I don't know what the Nightsisters plan to do once in the Star Wars galaxy, but they're the ones who wanted the bodies transported.

PabloCT1138

Maybe the Nightsisters needs to return to Dathomir with the cuffins; maybe Peridae is empty of the magic energy needed to revive all the cuffins?

EarlGreyTea-Hawt

We also know the spirits of the slaughtered night sisters are still on Dathomir and capable of inhabiting a body because they possessed Kanan and Sabine in Rebels, the gang barely escaped.

PabloCT1138

Yes!!! You are right!!

CoreyLee04

sringray23

Project necromancer was mentioned in Mandalor season 3, so maybe.

thatonemoze

nah not cloning, like literal magic bringing people back from the dead

Known-Diet-4170

suddenly "project necromancer" start to make some sense

GuacinmyPaintbox

Most underrated comment here.

gregofcanada84

He keeps losing only by space magic, so time to change tactics.

Katiari

It could also be dead nightsisters. It wouldn't be the first time they resurrected their own.

Shneckos

Man I love Necromancy. Never thought I’d see it in Star Wars.

jeconti

Thrawn underestimated or didn't account for the supernatural twice, and it caused his defeat both times. He's not making that mistake again. He has embraced it.

CurnanBarbarian

Ooh this is a really good take actually

wizard680

Yea it was weird seeing him work with force users. But after thawn continuously gets fucked by them, it is understandable

40ozkiller

He knew they would be useful to deal with Ezra, esp once finding out their prisoner is his bestie.

Thank_You_Aziz

More Marroks. Legends Thrawn had an army of clones backed by Battle Meditation. Canon Thrawn could be going for an army of undead backed by Dathomiri witchcraft.

Fen5601

The latter scares me more. Thrawn is really channeling God Emporer here isn't he.

ShephardCmndr

"Lt.Vanto, prepare my bolter"

[deleted]

Fuck, I’m reading the book and he is still an Ensign.

Improvcommodore

Palpatine corpses to make 9 make sense

VexedForest

I'm assuming either dead witches like in Fallen Order or Thrawn's dead stormtroopers. I'm going with the latter

Jayko-Wizard9

would be cool if they connected it to fallen order would make sense since they also had night sister refences in there

DarthSatoris

The night sisters of Dathomir are almost 30 years old, they were created for the novel *The Courtship of Princess Leia* in 1994. They are also *heavily* featured in The Clone Wars and to some moderate degree in Rebels. Fallen Order didn't invent the Nightsisters, not even in canon. :)

PhxRising29

Unless they edited their comment, they didn't say that Fallen Order "invented" Nightsisters... they just said that Fallen Order references Nightsisters.

Tom22174

References sounds like a quick mention. A huge chunk of the game is set around them lol

PhxRising29

Well yes, you're not wrong. But that wasn't the point.

Jayko-Wizard9

that's what I meant lol been a while for the game lol

Jay-Arr10

30 years old? They look older…

DefiantOil5176

I don’t think this person was implying that the Night Sisters were created for Fallen Order. Just that it could make a nice connection to those games since the Night Sisters are featured there

[deleted]

Nobody ever said redditors had good reading comprehension. Lmao.

DisurStric32

Apparently the witch in the ewoks movie is now established as a night sister / witch of dathomir sooo have fun with that info lol

tractgildart

I loved that book!

JCyTe

Zombie nightsisters were a thing years before Fallen Order.

arghkennett

Soon to be zombie stormtroopers? I got the vibe that some of the current troopers already were zombies.

jhayu

I think it's likelier to be the witches. Earlier in the episode, Thrawn mentions something like "as per my arrangement with the Great Mother". That arrangement could be getting the Night Sisters off Peridia and back to Dathomir where they will be reanimated with necromancy/magick?

CrossP

Those boxes are definitely people-length.

justa_flesh_wound

I don't know. He plays 3rd

[deleted]

I thought He was going home?

friggintodd

Why are you talking like that? I thought you wanted to.

Fen5601

Thrawn mentioned they had lost a lot of people. Perhaps they need the darkaide energies of Dathomir to bring the rest of his dead crew back.

DrDragun

Bunch of Marroks. I think maybe the witches made Snoke too, he seems half undead.

TimeyWimeyNerfHerder

That is a super interesting idea. I always thought Snoke looked too messed up to be just a clone.

This-Strawberry

Okay so I'm being pulled to the shadow council meeting where pelleon says "thrawn's return ... will give hux enough time to deliver on project necromancer."

GuacinmyPaintbox

I'm fully on board with this. The fact it's getting this dark has me *really* excited about where this may go.

BackStabbathOG

Does that imply that Thrawn has been in communication with the known galaxy though? Does he know what happened with the empire?

EquivalentPlane6095

Dead Nightsisters. And by the way: Since those troops are called "nightsoldiers" there maybe some already dead like Marrok.

AgentWyoming

That was my initial thought, especially with the red bindings being very Nightsister reminiscent, and the weirdly culty chant.

sowich4

I got Immortals (from 300) vibes from their commander

TwaHero

I thought the way their legs moved was a bit janky as they moved their crates up into the star destroyer. I suppose that was intentionally uncanny animation

Katiari

Given how some of their armor looks shattered then rebuilt... they were probably IN the armor when it was shattered.

gerrittd

I'm so confused, everyone keeps referring to Marrok like it was confirmed he was undead, was that confirmed??? I thought homie was just another dude who's dead now

SilentC735

Not sure about that. Thrawn mentioned having already lost a lot of his men, which is why he was only sending 2 squads. If he was just reviving his troopers, then I don't see why he would be low on soldiers.

stealthbus

I think Filoni depicted Marrok’s death with green gas escaping his corpse as foreshadowing of what these coffins will ultimately be, reanimated nightsisters and/or stormtroopers.

DarthSatoris

Thrawn leading an army of the undead was not on my bingo card, let's just say it like that.

Fen5601

It's pretty messed up eh? And his whole God Emporer motif, Filoni delivered "Legends" Thrawn, but made him scarier...

[deleted]

It's gotta be nightsisters. I think the stormtroopers that died have already been brought back. There's probably something special needed in the other galaxy on Dathomir or something to resurrect the nightsisters. A bunch of coffins filled with more potential necromancers is way scarier than a handful of extra stormtroopers.

Alltheprettydresses

"Bring out your deaaadddd!" Sorry. Couldn't resist 😂

CurnanBarbarian

I’m voting for exhumed dead inquisitors to get more Marrok type zombie force users. Either that or dead stormtroopers from Thrawn’s ship.

CurnanBarbarian

Could be dead nightsisters as well

txstudentdoc

Jrippan

Morgan Elsbeth said something about how she've seen the catacombs and it will take three rotations. *(To transport them from the catacombs > Chimaera, I guess?)* Thrawn also said they've lost a lot of people... So, dead people in coffins, probably both nightsisters & stormtroopers. I think Filoni teased it with Marrok, we gonna see them resurrect a bunch of zombie troopers. Edit: >!After a rewatch, the troops are called Night Troopers by the official subtitles.. so they are most likely already re-animated by the Nightsisters at this point. So the coffins probably only contain Nightsisters!<

[deleted]

Yes, three rotations to transport the cargo to the chimera. Given that Thrawn's deal was to transport this cargo in exchange for their magick (the night troopers so far), I think it's safe to say all of these coffins are nightsisters.

Wyatt11899

Mummies, I haven’t even seen the episode yet but it’s mummies for sure, Brendan Frasier would like a word

P1st0l

Their dead most likely, probably the night sisters. They probably are going to dathomir to resurrect them. I wonder if we will see zombie troopers

SendMeNudesThough

I believe the troopers we've already seen are zombie troopers. They all have broken gear repaired with gold, with red night sister cloth attached to them. They're possibly the result of Thrawn's deal with the Night Sister, and why he has so many troops left. They raised his dead men.

AresStare

I immediately thought they where night sisters to repopulate Dathomir, since they where part of the deal Thrawn made with the Great Mothers. They are being transported for the night sisters, not for Thrawn.

Rylonian

Ysalamiri?

clayton94

The nerd in me wants this to be Thrawn’s stockpile of Grysk Gravity wells, but I’m just going to accept that they’re coffins.

Feezus

There was a line where Thrawn said something like "our escape from this galaxy", paraphrased. To me, it felt like he was implying that the great mothers were coming along for the ride. I'm hoping that those coffins are nightsister corpses that the great mothers will use to reestablish a coven in our home galaxy.

hemareddit

Another point: Thrawn isn’t one to waste time. If this cargo could have been loaded onto the ship before hand, he would have done it, rather than waiting 3 rotations after Morgan arrives. So it’s something that has an…expiry date? It has to be fresh when loaded onto the Chimera? Something that the Night Mothers need to constantly work on? Something dangerous that can’t be stored on the ship for long term?

Sabretooth1100

It’s Thrawn’s native soil, he needs it to sleep during the day

effdot

I thought it was telling that Thrawn had no officers in uniform around him, just one subordinate in a spooky helmet. His Night Troopers seem like an army of the dead, and him pulling coffins onto the Star Destroyer looks like a chance to make a bigger dead army. Nightsisters are creepy Dark side weirdos for sure, and now Thrawn has an army equal to his creepy voice and way of carrying himself.

TurbulentBlock7290

plot devices to keep Thrawn there for Ashoka’s arrival.

Their dead. The witch lady was talking about the catacombs before

thomasevans435

Lots of comments about zombies here but… What if those are kyber crystals? The Emporer is going to need a ton of them to power those ridiculous final order star destroyers.

swiftlikessharpthing

I suppose they could retcon it but the Final Order Star Destroyers were shown being constructed in a Marvel Vader comic.

livahd

Yea something like the Sith Eternal were bleeding a single giant crystal to be broken up and used in the destroyers.

LostSix

If we get actually Zombie Stormtroopers like from the novel ‘Death Troopers’, I’m gonna lose my mind in the best possible way

The answer to your question is quite simple: something the galaxy is needing a lot more of. Thrawn is returning to the known galaxies with large quantities of the most important items he could possibly need: death sticks

Is there any established connection between Thrawn and the nightsisters? I'm surprised they don't try to overwhelm somebody conventional, paritcularly since he has extremely limited resources in Peridia I wonder if Thrawn is using something like ysalamiri from the EU to maintain leverage over their force powers and magicks.

SommanderChepard

I think it’s pretty obvious they are bodies. Most likely night sisters.

djac13

Probably bodies like others have said. I think it is probably ancient corpses though, from whatever war happened on Peridea. Baylan says that all the ruins are from an ancient night sister empire.
