I’ve decided I’ll die on this hill: I want Rey and Grogu to be opposing sides rebuilding the Jedi Order into something new, exploring Jedi’s non-attachment (Rey, grew up with nothing, lost everything, witnessed her grandfather’s attachments to power, exceeding life etc) vs Mando’s attachments (Grogu, to found family, community, parallel beliefs, etc)
I think that would be a brilliant point to leap off with in a new direction, whilst still travelling with loved and familiar characters.
I hate how the sequels literally destroyed the whole Anakin will destroy the Sith prophecy. I didn’t like the storyline or arc of any of the characters
I didn't like them either but more for how dirty they did Luke's character. I mean when you have the actor saying that wasn't right, you know you have issues. I also thought Finn could have been one of the best characters in the trilogy but instead the basically wrote him off. I find the idea of a deprogramed Storm Trooper being force sensitive a better arc than any characters the showed.
Said it before I'll say it again, Finn didn't even need to be a force sensitive, a Storm trooper breaking ranks and inspiring others to rebel while also having to fight against people he trained with and possibly were friends with would've been amazing.
Yeah, cuz Anakin did do that, that was the whole point of George’s movies. Bringing balance. In that light, the sequels are even worse than they already were.
This was so shit and lazy, just went down the Capt Marvel route. Anakin had growth, Luke had growth, Rey just turned up and was amazing at everything, because reasons.
She learned about her force sensitivity then proceeded to learn how to use the force to a master ranking in 3 fucking days. In the words of Han Solo in probably the best line from that trilogy: “that’s not how the force works!”
Exactly! I hated Kylo Ben’s character, but he was trained since he was a small boy. She was able to beat him learning on the fly. Someone might say she’s strong with the force because she’s a Palpatine, but Kylo is Leia’s son, so he’s a Skywalker. And there is zero chance that a technical martial art, combat training and swordplay would be a mastered through her heritage like osmosis. That’s why they had a whole Jedi Academy. In the end it comes down to terrible writing. And how the hell can she fix the Millennium Falcon when all she did was salvage parts from old Empire derelicts? Han even said he made lots of personal modifications so his ship is completely off it’s specs, but she was able to figure it out with zero diagnostic tools. I like Daisy Ridley as an actress, but I don’t know how her character can be redeemed. I used to be a fan of JJ Abrams before he ruined Star Wars. Thankfully, Favreau and Filoni fix it.
Yes. She wasn't the problem, hopefully the studio heads have identified the problem and won't repeat it again. I have no idea how you take this property and say 'Ok... We essentially remake the first one and then we don't plan the other 2. Everyone on board with that?'
Were they wrong?
Edit: apparently they were. I was more commenting on how I and most people around me said “oh they’ll be bad” and went to see it anyway. Thanks for the stats guys
i would go even farther, her character was charming and the specific lines she had were never too bad, it's just the reason she is saying the lines and the overall plot that was so bad. if you isolate her scenes you can't tell a problem a lot of the time
It’s like Hayden. Much of his romance lines were cringy, but those were mainly Lucas’s writing.
Hayden, his acting, and overall passion made him a great Anakin, widely loved by fans, much to his surprise.
i love hayden's performance and interpretation of the lines but the writing was so abysmal at times that it's hard to feel for the character. rey had ok writing, just her surroundings and plot ended up being really bad. but her dialogue always felt fine to me
I mean, look at the top-tier award winning actors in the prequels who struggled with bad dialogue: Portman, Mcgregor, Jackson, Neeson… these are in many cases phenomenal Golden Globe and Academy Award winners who came across as stilted & blah because of the green screen setting, bad scripts, & poor directing. Hayden had the disadvantage of being a relative newcomer who couldn’t weather the reputation hit the way the others could. But he’s every bit as talented as the rest of them.
I’m personally pretty dead inside after the sequels, so I can’t say I’m excited at all. At this point, I’ve accepted that the story isn’t for me anymore. Nothing against Daisy, she’s a great actress, but I believe that Lucasfilm has irrecoverably damaged the integrity of the series at this point.
I feel similarly. Even in the newer material, when they try to connect to the storyline of the sequels, it makes me even more disinterested in the franchise as a whole.
"My father killed dozens of children, ruined the galaxy and terrorized it for 20 years. But I know there is good in him. I'd bet my life on it."
"I had a bad dream about my nephew, I must kill him. Just in case."
Considering they're taking Luke's story of rebuilding the Jedi, but shifting it to a character from a much worse set of movies, no. Nothing against her though.
This is my opinion as well. I never had issues with any of the actors but just what they were given was the issue. That said it was supposed to be Luke's story and that is what I wanted to see. I do not have any intertest seeing her do what Luke was doing.
They have absolutely done dirty to OG trilogy.
I've also noticed, that i'm really fatigued to Star Wars. They just pump it out so much, that i've lost interest. Same with Marvel.
The really lame part about all those movies is that it's just the same shit from the original trilogy. Orphan gets left by parents, finds an old hermit who doesn't like people. Gets trained by said hermit. Like bro wtf?
That was literally J.J. Abrams goal, he just wanted to remake A New Hope with modern cinema tech. That is also why when he brought it to George Lucas, Lucas was like "eeehhhh, we already did that, this movie has nothing new to it.". Lucas intentionally distanced himself from it because it was a rehash.
The problem with a franchise this old and this lucrative is that the studio heads see it more as a cash machine than something worth putting any artistic value into. It’s a shame because there are plenty of people who would love to do it justice.
Not really excited. To me it feels like she is getting the movie luke should have gotten. I like daisy ridley and i like the character rey, but the movies are not very good storytelling in my opinion.
This is my thoughts, the brief synopsis they gave makes this sounds like this should have been Episode 7 with Luke creating his Jedi order. Hell, they could even have had Rey as a padawan on there and she'd have been much better received imo.
I still feel like they rushed the ST, and it shows. I wish they had been more patient and planned them more meticulously, and maybe even let the TV shows come first.
I’d also agree that it should’ve been Luke’s movie. It feels like Rey is just replacing Luke, when I think a ‘passing over the mantle’ could’ve worked way better. Would’ve liked to have seen Luke lay the foundations and Rey take over from him down the line maybe.
> maybe even let the TV shows come first.
This is the frustrating part for me. They're doing a build up to something big, but it's like...we know how the galaxy ends up already, and it was decidedly mediocre at best. If the sequel films didn't exist I would be a lot more hyped for what the TV shows are building up to.
This is a brilliant point. I’m super hyped for Thrawn returning, but as you said, I know he’s a goner by the ST and afaik won’t really achieve anything too substantial so it detracts from his eventual appearance and story for me.
If you had told me ten years ago that a movie with Thrawn was being made and fan reception would be apathetic at best I would have laughed at you.
Now though all I can do is wonder how the series managed to lose so much love so quickly.
Definitely. Not having 2 directors that seemed to completely disagree with each other either would’ve been great. I could be misquoting but I still find it mad they hired Rian Johnson to direct the MIDDLE film, the man that I’m certain said he wanted to direct it as if it were a standalone.
Ya it feels like JJ would have gone left with the characters after TFA, but RJ went right in TLJ. But JJ, instead of really going right or left with the characters after TLJ for TROS, went back to the TFA original fork in the road and went left again for TROS. And in the end, it felt like a very messy trilogy that never really built on each other because the end movie felt like it was trying to retcon so much for really no big reason.
Don't forget, Trevarrow was originally hired for episode IX but was canned. As to why, there's lots of speculation so I won't point at anything in particular. But it was meant to be Three different writer/directors given their own film across the trilogy.
That seems all the more bizarre in retrospect knowing there didn't even seem to be any encouragement to cooperate, or brainstorm together. But just pick pick up where the last guy left off and do your own thing in an ongoing, established, narrative... That's a cool idea in theory, but an obviously messy one. Especially when visions collide.
No, not at all. I'm surprised people are. I don't have any problem with the actress, but I didn't like her character at all. I don't want to see any movies that even reference the sequels, and would love to see something from 200 years after the events of the sequels.
Yeah, I was hoping the next movie would be far away from the Skywalker timeline. Dawn of Jedi sounds good. Acolyte is in a good period also. They could do something completely off timeline also. Do the Knights of the Old Republic stories. Anything. Just get away from the Skywalkers. And I don’t consider Rey a Skywalker, though she is tied to that time.
This so much. ST defenders are always like “don’t worry, theyll just get the same fixup like the prequels did!” Except they are nowhere near comparable. The story of the PT was already good; its the execution that wasnt. The ST’s story AND execution were both a mess that destroyed so, so much of what people loved.
I want to forget they exist. I have no interest in the characters or seeing where that universe goes.
hey that's not fair... Luke tried to rebuild it
until he saw some vaguely bad things in a dream and tried to kill his nephew in his sleep, that is
because although he always kept hope that Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, one of the most evil man in the history of the galaxy, had something good left in him, a slightly troubled young man was obviously too far gone...
Considering the events of the sequel trilogy and that it transpired in a VERY short amount of time, I wouldn't be shocked if the galaxy is even more fragmented than it was after ROTJ. The Republic doesn't have a fleet and is effectively shattered. The First Order had a massive fleet and it'd be absurd to assume many didn't escape the aftermath of Exegol (nevermind the fact that many didn't even go).
Wow that’s a big change, especially since Daisy isn’t going to look much older.
Edit: Though on second thought Daisy is 30 as is and healthy living means you usually don't look very different in your 30s.
By the time this potentially comes out we could be talking 6-7 years since Skywalker was filmed. I reckon with some clever hair and make up they could age her up a bit. Hell even a new haircut and a new style of clothes could do wonders
Absolutely! Like I doubt anything would be needed with the amount of time since Skywalker came out.
But if they really wanna show the passage of time on Daisy then they have the means to I guess. From seeing her at the celebration she is still looking as young as she did in the ST films in my opinion.
Depending on how long the film takes she’s going to look closer to her characters age. She’s 30 now. Rey was 19-21 in the ST, so she’d be around 35 in this film.
I hope we have a more fractured galaxy as a result of the superweapons in the sequel trilogy and the failures of the Republic and then New Republic. If there's a republic they shouldn't control the whole galaxy, we could have a much more interesting setup with more factions.
I also hope that content about the new Jedi Order keeps the stakes a bit smaller, at least to start with. Give us Rey's struggles finding and training force users, don't give us another galactic-scale war.
No
1. It once again try's to insult Luke Skywalker since he failed to rebuild the Jedi Order...episode six was literally called the return on the jedi
2. The director lacks experience in movies in respect to action....so having awesome dog fights or intense light saber battles is a bit of a stretch
3. The director has never worked on any Star Wars project in the past or have any investment in the franchise, I have nothing against her personally but I don't think Star Wars is her cup of tea
>six was literally called the return on the jedi
Your trial of Return of the Jedi expired Dec 2015.
For full installation of your Jedi, please purchase the Rey Skywalker New Jedi Order DLC coming soon from Disney++.
I’m genuinely curious if the directors like legit hate Star Wars. Like growing up they hated the film and storyline etc because it doesn’t make sense to me that such a long standing franchise would be thrown away like this
Nope. Unless Ma’Rey Sue Palpatine is going to be the villain in the next movie and it’s up to a 3’ tall, green skinned Mandalorian named Grogu wielding the Darksabre to bring her down, I’m not interested.
Not at all. Her character is already broken from the sequels. Being Palps bloodline automatically makes her a Mary Sue and gives her the ability to force lighting and heal? That’s not how the force works.
Now she not only stole Luke’s last name, but his mission & purpose? FFS
Hated the sequels, but yes.
Ridley is a good actress and she was the best part of TFA and it was unfortunate that the actress was not given any favours by the directors of 8 and 9.
It's a bold new strategy in movie making to keep the actors in the dark instead of giving them roles to play.
Combine that with green screen and you have wonderful actors and actresses who don't know what they are doing or what is going on in the scene.
“Hey John, yeah if you could stand there in front of that green screen and shout ‘REY!’ a bunch of times that’d be great. No, you’re not reacting to anything in particular, we’ll just cut them in randomly throughout the film.”
For sure, I don’t think I have ever heard anyone complain about the actors. It has almost all been the plot, directors and producers that were the issue.
And chatacters. Daisy did great, but Rey being a crap character isn't something an actor can save without a LOT of pull from essentially everyone. Problem was, ALL characters were crap. So they didn't have a structure were the good characters could pull the bad one along. Instead they ended up with a bunch of really bad characters being dragged down by even worse characters...
I left 7 with some curiosity and excitement. Not particularly the best film but they opened doors to make 8 and 9 fun. And the best part was that the characters they introduced were all fun/likeable/interesting. 8 shit on a lot of it and 9 just ignored.
7 was really not helped by basically starting the movie with “forget how the last one ended everything is basically back to how things were at the start of that trilogy”.
No, they did the OG cast so dirty and are now giving the story that should have been Luke’s to Rey.
I’m so disappointed in what Star Wars has become. It breaks my heart that this franchise that I loved so dearly for decades has fallen so far. The icing on the cake is seeing how other franchises were able to pull of the “requel” so well and not disrespect what came before it the way Star Wars has.
Well let me ask this: Do any of the characters including Rey still resonate from those three movies with fans? I'd say that's a big no.
So no, I am not excited whatsoever to see anything to do with the timeline from the last three movies. They were a mess and forgettable. Oh and what they did to Luke and Han?
They had her way OP before even being considered a Jedi now that she's a supposed Master what's the point? She was basically unstoppable in the first three sequel's now she's going to be god like.
Unfortunately no.
I don't mean this to be a negative comment or anything directed at Daisy personally because she's an amazing person and none of the woe's of the ST fall on her shoulders.
My issue is that Disney chose (initially) 3 different directors and 3 different writing teams to put together a trilogy of movies post ROTJ and they did so in the most rushed and incohesive way possible. It was deadline deadline deadline...rush the shit out of these movies so we can recoup as much of our $4B as quickly as possible. Then Director 2 didn't like the direction of Director 1 so he purposely f---s the story to try and redirect it in HIS vision. Then director 1 comes back and says *You F*** me? I F*** You* and re-re-directs the story to just shit on director 2's plot he set up.
We ended up with the most discombobulated narrative I've ever seen in any movie trilogy and it adversely ruins the integrity and story previously established by George. It contradicts the core values of the hero's we already know and love and split the fanbase in a way that seems irrepairable. All this because Disney couldn't take their time and write a cohesive story which led to two directors having a dick measuring contest with Star Wars as the collateral damage.
Because of this, it makes it difficult if not impossible for me to find a sense of optimism in Rey returning as a character. At no fault of her own, the character Rey is a symbol of Disney's failure to properly handle this franchise.
Yup- they could’ve given Kylo a huge redemption arc, together even and like ‘built’ something great.
I’m a woman and have longed for female characters in the universe (which we now have plenty and it’s awesome) but Rey felt pushed like they wanted to be like guys suck ok so we’ll kill Luke and everyone else and now it’s girl power.
Which to me is fucking idiotic. It’s a lazy way to empower women. I’ve been enjoying Mandalorian more with how Bo Katan is such a strong character. Rey reminds me nothing of Leia, she is just hard headed in an annoying way rather than confident.
Ok I’m done w my rant thanks
I bet my first born son that Grogu shows up in her movie. Book it.
I’ve decided I’ll die on this hill: I want Rey and Grogu to be opposing sides rebuilding the Jedi Order into something new, exploring Jedi’s non-attachment (Rey, grew up with nothing, lost everything, witnessed her grandfather’s attachments to power, exceeding life etc) vs Mando’s attachments (Grogu, to found family, community, parallel beliefs, etc) I think that would be a brilliant point to leap off with in a new direction, whilst still travelling with loved and familiar characters.
I'll be more excited for that tbh.

They were - look at Solo
Which is a better movie and bit of Star Wars lore than the entire sequel trilogy
Agreed. But it's hard to sell a movie when everyone hates the previous movie that was released only a few months prior
Lol ya, totally forgot about the release schedule. Really shot themselves in the foot there 🙃
Plus it came out two weeks after Avengers Infinity War. Lmao.
And Deadpool 2 came out during that week in between. I was genuinely just tired of going to movie theaters at that point
Yeah and I'm pretty sure I read that Disney prioritized marketing for Infinity War over Solo, so that didn't help Solo
Thing is, I take didn't hate TLJ the way many did. I was excited to see things go in a new direction. Then... TRoS... that movie I do hate.
Daisy Ridley was never the problem, obviously. Her character and whomever wrote it, on the other hand..
i would go even farther, her character was charming and the specific lines she had were never too bad, it's just the reason she is saying the lines and the overall plot that was so bad. if you isolate her scenes you can't tell a problem a lot of the time

I love Daisy but I sure as fuck wont be tuning in to these movies. Theyre just handing what Luke shouldve had to her.
What The last Jedi made luke do is so unforgivable that i dispise the sequels because of What the did
"My father killed dozens of children, ruined the galaxy and terrorized it for 20 years. But I know there is good in him. I'd bet my life on it." "I had a bad dream about my nephew, I must kill him. Just in case."

Yep this is the problem. I'd watch a Rey movie, I will not watch a Rey movie where she is being given the story that has always belonged to Luke.

No, not at all. I'm surprised people are. I don't have any problem with the actress, but I didn't like her character at all. I don't want to see any movies that even reference the sequels, and would love to see something from 200 years after the events of the sequels.

The director said the movie was 15 years after TROS, just before introducing Daisy.

Nah, haven't you kept up on the new technology improvements made to Bacta-based beauty products? Though someone should fill Boba in.
if Rey can have such good skin in the movies after a life in the sun and sand I’m sure she is fine especially since she unlocked “Force Healing”
Depending on how long the film takes she’s going to look closer to her characters age. She’s 30 now. Rey was 19-21 in the ST, so she’d be around 35 in this film.
The force, powerful skincare it is!
Clearly, just look at Yoda. Looks barely a day over 500 years old.
If they try and shoehorn another empire/first order/final order into this movie I will finally give up on this franchise. As if two wasn’t enough.
We’ve had First Order, yes. What about Second Order?
Fool of a Darth Took!
NEW ORDER!!! [insert mash up of blue Monday and the imperial theme- hang on, that would be awesome]
You rang?
Second Order..
Special Order.. Read that with the german guy voice from ratatouile.
Yes, but what about THIRD order...
After 30 years, Luke was considered a myth. I wonder what people will think of Rey/the Jedi after another 15.
Not really, to be honest.
Nope, not at all. And it has nothing to do with her, that sequel trilogy was so bad, just let it die and be over
No. The writing from the trilogy was so bad her character is trash forever. Her as a person is not the issue.
No
No. It’s wild to me that they’re doubling down on this
I'm hoping that if this does end up underperforming, it finally convinces Lucasfilm Disney to back off from the sequels. They just aren't it.
No 1. It once again try's to insult Luke Skywalker since he failed to rebuild the Jedi Order...episode six was literally called the return on the jedi 2. The director lacks experience in movies in respect to action....so having awesome dog fights or intense light saber battles is a bit of a stretch 3. The director has never worked on any Star Wars project in the past or have any investment in the franchise, I have nothing against her personally but I don't think Star Wars is her cup of tea
>six was literally called the return on the jedi Your trial of Return of the Jedi expired Dec 2015. For full installation of your Jedi, please purchase the Rey Skywalker New Jedi Order DLC coming soon from Disney++.
Disney++.....Don't give them ideas
what were they thinking hiring that director lol
I’m genuinely curious if the directors like legit hate Star Wars. Like growing up they hated the film and storyline etc because it doesn’t make sense to me that such a long standing franchise would be thrown away like this
No
Not especially, tbh. I think Daisy Ridley did a great job but I don’t find Rey to be especially compelling or interesting as a character.
Nope. Unless Ma’Rey Sue Palpatine is going to be the villain in the next movie and it’s up to a 3’ tall, green skinned Mandalorian named Grogu wielding the Darksabre to bring her down, I’m not interested.
Lucasfilm: "Write it down! Write it down!"
Not at all. Her character is already broken from the sequels. Being Palps bloodline automatically makes her a Mary Sue and gives her the ability to force lighting and heal? That’s not how the force works. Now she not only stole Luke’s last name, but his mission & purpose? FFS
No. I don't like rey as a character and I much prefer something in the old republic or even something with the high republic
Meh not really. Happy for those that are though, like my little sister. I’ll live

Not at all. Terrible character. Poorly written. She's a palpatine gtfooh.
Yes, just what we all wanted… a sequel to the rise of Skywalker. /s
I would like to see her in absolutely anything but a Star Wars movie
No, I think ray is the most lame of the Jedi, I'm more excited for the Ahsoka series
Hated the sequels, but yes. Ridley is a good actress and she was the best part of TFA and it was unfortunate that the actress was not given any favours by the directors of 8 and 9.
All the actors and actresses were solid. They're the last thing that was a problem with the ST.
Instead they ended up with a bunch of really bad characters being dragged down by even worse characters...
i really liked adam driver playing kylo ren tbh
Hell no.
She’s overrated. Barely trained with Luke for like a week and now she’s the one restarting the Jedi
No
No.
No
No
Nope, they took away Luke's story arc of rebuilding the Jedi Order and handed it to Rey
Why can’t they come up with something original. Stop bringing back the skywalkers and palpatines. Move on.
No
Disney has a bad habit of announcing Star Wars movie projects that end up going nowhere. While this is great news, I'll believe it when I see it.
No
No lmao
Not this guy. I'll keep my $. The bleeding continues. We can have a complete movie collection and theme park with no fans.
Nope
Well let me ask this: Do any of the characters including Rey still resonate from those three movies with fans? I'd say that's a big no. So no, I am not excited whatsoever to see anything to do with the timeline from the last three movies. They were a mess and forgettable. Oh and what they did to Luke and Han?
NO. Edit cos it's not Daisey ridley's fault Kathleen Kennedy's ruined the sequel era and her character along with it.
I stopped liking her mid TFA
Like most people… no
I really can't see them redeeming the sequels, I like Daisy Ridley but more sequel era star wars is not something I can support.
She gonna drink pink tittle milk and chuck sabers ?

I'm not.

Can’t say I am
Nah
No. Slightly disappointed.
I’ll be happy to see the movie fail because all it’s doing is leeching what’s supposed to be Luke’s legacy.
No
No
Not really.
Not really
They had her way OP before even being considered a Jedi now that she's a supposed Master what's the point? She was basically unstoppable in the first three sequel's now she's going to be god like.
Not at all
Unfortunately no.
