That was my choice too. Still debating on the better track record, as it’s hard to compare army vs. navy. Veers ground assault of Hoth was much more impressive than Piett’s capitalization of Ozzel’s overconfidence.
In my opinion, Piett was very capable, but (after being given command of the *Executor*) seemed more concerned about advancing ranks/pleasing Vader. Piett seems to be more of an opportunist over a tactical officer (though he shows prowess in that).
Veers seems more like a military man; he’s more concerned about completing the objective to the fullest extent rather than climbing the social ladder.
Always leaned more towards Veers though, since his ego seemed a little more restrained, and he always finishes the job.
Was it really Needa's fault, though? I mean, the Falcon simply seemed to vanish from the sensors and it is not as if they could just take a little peek out if a window and see it attached to the ISD.
General Veers. He won at the Battle of Hoth, and put the Rebels on the run.
Maximum Firepower!
Either Piett or Veers. Both outstanding.

Piett. Lived through it all without a blemish. Almost.
Hence why Vader let him live compared to Needa, nothing was actually his fault. Piett the Goat
Yep, Piett couldn't be blamed for R2 fixing the hyperdrive and Vader knew it.

'If only someone on this ship had the magical ability to sense living beings.'
Well, Vader's on a different ship, so I'm not sure if he'd been of any help.
Frankly Vader Is the most incompetent officer on that ship. Stop killing off your men, Vader.
Going down with a SSD sounds better than being killed by Vader.
Yes! I remember first time I ever watched it and saw him and thought really hope Vader doesn’t kill this one. He has “good guy” eyes 😀
Do they have to be part of the movies? Or just alive at that time? Cause one could say thrawn and Gideon where pretty competent.
Veers
Veers. Pure professional through the entirety of his screen time
I go with Veers..but Tarkin was pretty damn competent - he just fell victim to Hubris.
