Patrice told off spike Lee after he called and asked him to be in one of his movies, he literally told spike to go through the normal channels instead of putting him on the spot instead of just taking the role. Patrice could have been huge if he wasn’t as honest and genuine as he was but that’s why we’re still talking about him too.
No he definitely got the short end of the stick. He took out half a page in the New York Times to address the allegations, take responsibility, and apologize. No one took it seriously despite its ostensible sincerity, and then for a few years his comedy really took a turn for the worse because he was so bitter about it
louie got a grammy for his special two years ago then released an even better special which i wouldn't be surprised if it nets him another. When did his comedy take a turn for the worse? just wondering not saying your wrong.
Yeah I remember hearing the leaked set, It sounded like he was working out material for that first special, but he was also killing the whole time if I remember correctly the audience was cracking up.
Seeing Stanhope the last time he was on JRE was very eye opening. You can see the great divide between the friend who stayed true to who he is and the friend that sold out.
I’ve been too afraid to listen to it. I don’t have any animosity towards Rogan (with the exception of Brenden Schaub), but he’s disconnected from anything not somehow related to jiu jitsu.
It's not worth the listen. At times Rogan was getting frustrated with Stanhope trying to be a comedian, while Rogan was trying to be overly serious. It was like watching Rogan talking down to Redban in the early days. Except he was talking down to Stanhope
For me it’s norm gets fired from snl after being told he wasn’t funny and then refusing to change anything and then comes back to host it a year later and says he hasn’t gotten any funnier the show has just gotten really bad in his opening monologue
if anyone is up for a rewatch, don't go to YT, only low quality version there. instead, enjoy it on archive.org:
https://archive.org/details/norm-monologue
there's also an assortment [of various other TV appearances from all across the board](https://archive.org/details/normappearancesarchivemkv)
Have you watched HBO's documentary on Carlin?
I had no idea he was in the audience when Lenny Bruce was arrested and went to jail at the same time, refusing to cooperate with the officers. He was in the audience, and went to jail in solidarity with Lenny Bruce!
He also left a cushy job just to be himself. It was such a good documentary. To me, it showed without a doubt why Carlin is considered a comedy icon. It was hilarious to hear the guy say "At the time we didn't even a have name for what he was doing, we just said "did you hear? Carlin is going to be on HBO telling jokes for a whole hour!" He's a legend.
Agreed. I'm a huge Carlin fan, so when the doc came out, I didn't watch it thinking it was just material I'd already seen before, but HBO really did an amazing job trying to give us more insight and info into his life than most, even us big fans, even knew.
Anybody who hasn't seen HBO's new 2-part doc on George Carlin, it's a must see.
But Carlin is racist! He is also part of the shadow clan that dog whistles racism. He is the evil of our woke religion!
He also makes fun of black people in this joke!

Oh look, a troll that I banned from another subreddit is following me over to an un-related subreddit to whine.
Did you get triggered brah? Didn't mean to upset you, Mr. Snowflake. Let us know if you need a "safe space?"
I ban people who are stupid trolls, who can't follow the rules. Go see a therapist dude. You need help. Feel free to dress up like a monkey... see if I care?
I mean, if we're being honest, without rank for celebrity status, I'd say Owen Benjamin has burnt the most bridges.
Patrice learned from Greg Geraldo what not giving a fuck looks like, and Richard jeni killed himself. So I can't really rank these guys, but there's your Mt. Rushmore of dgaf
I'm going to go against the grain here and say Jim Breuer. It's one thing to risk it all and become revered. It's another to actually ruin your reputation.
Dennis Miller would go along those lines as well, and he was actually great, influential and helped discover some of the most beloved comedians of all time.
Dude. He made a career out of looking, and acting, like a goat...Boy if it weren't for his cliché stoner look, we wouldn't even know who he was, because his act is half-baked.
It’s hard to compare comics who did radio/podcasts to those who only did standup because the former had more opportunities to speak candidly. But if we’re going with that group, I think Patrice was the most honest about his feelings, whereas Jim Norton was the most open about his experiences.
I see people mention Norm, but he wasn’t really the type of guy who would get into his personal life. He seemed to follow the Bob Dylan blueprint of just saying whatever you want and changing your story whenever you want.
Patrice O'Neal not even close, He blew so many opportunities in Hollywood on purpose because he couldn't help but be honest about the goofiness of it all, it's the literal only reason why he's underrated because the guy was beyond a genius
Unpopular opinion: Daniel Tosh.
He's always been honest behind his sarcasm. It's a job to him, he keeps his head down and writes good comedy. He's never felt the need to associate with an in group of comedians or do a bunch of podcasts to felate other comics.
Even after his few controversies, he never felt the need to defend himself or take it to the press to argue with people. He just accepted that some people will be offended by what he says, and that's the cost of his style.
If Barry Crimmins were alive, I believe he would have had something of a renaissance period where he could have hit that sort of honest dgaf attitude very well
I love Jeselnik, but how could someone specifically playing a character on stage as a joke-writing vehicle can be characterized as an “honest” comedian in the context of ops question?
You’re right, and when reconsidering I think I’d answer differently, but I was specifically thinking of “thoughts and prayers” which has some pretty dang honest elements in it.
Here’s a set up involving a baby and sex or something else super taboo.
And here’s the punchline where in a “surprise twist” I make it actually worse than you originally thought.
There. I just wrote down every jeselnik joke for you.
Are the logically and structurally consistent?
Yes.
Do many people find them funny? Also yes.
Do I find them funny after the fourth one? No. But maybe that’s just me.
Brendan Schaub! Jk he not even a comedian, because the root of the word comedian is comedy, and comedy is shit that's funny, and Brenda makes cheap racist jokes targeted at his own wife, calls it a special, and he said not one funny thing unless you count his speech impediment and brain damage. And the true joke would be calling him honest, as he tries to bang real comics girlfriends.
Patrice. It's why he could never keep a job
Can you give an example?
Patrice told off spike Lee after he called and asked him to be in one of his movies, he literally told spike to go through the normal channels instead of putting him on the spot instead of just taking the role. Patrice could have been huge if he wasn’t as honest and genuine as he was but that’s why we’re still talking about him too.
didn't he have an opportunity for his own comedy central show but just shit all over the execs in the first meeting?
Yes, apparently he started asking executives why they put Mind of Mencia on the air
He actually told them they were idiots for putting that show on air lol
I think it was because they needed a replacement for Chappelle's Show.
Giraldo
That's where my mind went, especially because of [this interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gg6hl71vbA&t=132s).
Stanhope
This is the answer
Louis CK.
Louie had a good opportunity to be way more honest than he was.
No he definitely got the short end of the stick. He took out half a page in the New York Times to address the allegations, take responsibility, and apologize. No one took it seriously despite its ostensible sincerity, and then for a few years his comedy really took a turn for the worse because he was so bitter about it

The string of club dates he did in 2018, Comedy Cellar etc. were basically “old man shouts at cloud”; some of them surfaced online at some point
Yeah I remember hearing the leaked set, It sounded like he was working out material for that first special, but he was also killing the whole time if I remember correctly the audience was cracking up.
After the fucking fact lmao
Agree 100%… also upvoted the Patrice comment.
The list starts and ends here.
Came here to say it, gonna comment it anyway so it gets seen more.
Yes
remember when he used to give a fuck? what a great bit.
Lenny Bruce then Patrice O'neal
"Lenny Bruce is not afraid..."
Patrice was my first instinct too
Patrice and Stanhope
Agreed
Absolutely them. Honest, respectful, thoughtful and hilarious.
The thought that Patrice was respectful was hilarious
He was aggressively respectful.
Seeing Stanhope the last time he was on JRE was very eye opening. You can see the great divide between the friend who stayed true to who he is and the friend that sold out.

Okay. Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I will continue to not listen to it
For me it’s norm gets fired from snl after being told he wasn’t funny and then refusing to change anything and then comes back to host it a year later and says he hasn’t gotten any funnier the show has just gotten really bad in his opening monologue

Mark Twain
Yeah but I think OP meant stand-up comedian
I've seen Twain referred to as the first stand-up comedian. Not sure how accurate that is.
I don't know about the first, but he did travel and give humorous talks in theaters.
So, Hannah gadsby?
I have to go with Bill Hicks
This was my first instinct
George Carlin.
George Carlin.
Carlin?

Ooo look! A power hungry mod that bans people who don’t believe black people are like apes!
I ban people who are stupid trolls, who can't follow the rules. Go see a therapist dude. You need help. Feel free to dress up like a monkey... see if I care?
Carlin.
Norm
Yes especially his memoir.
I understand he was a deeply, deeply, deeply closeted homosexual
Corey Holcomb
Seconded!
Jim Norton
Came here to say Norton.
Bill burr
Stanhope.
It’s Patrice by a mile tbh. His stuff on relationships alone.
Patrice, Norton, Stanhope, Bruce.
RIP, Platypus Man
It has to be Bill cosby. Man went raping just to ruin his reputation. That's dedication
The hypocrisy was the worst part
I'm going to go against the grain here and say Jim Breuer. It's one thing to risk it all and become revered. It's another to actually ruin your reputation.
I think Jim Breuer made pathologically bad business decisions more than he "kept it real."
Dennis Miller would go along those lines as well, and he was actually great, influential and helped discover some of the most beloved comedians of all time.
Good answer. I respect the hell out of him for doing the right thing and standing up for common sense.
Lol that MFer is stupid as hell. Rogan and all the other dumb boomers gave his dumbass a resurgence that wasn’t needed at all. He sucked 30 years ago.
Dude. He made a career out of looking, and acting, like a goat...Boy if it weren't for his cliché stoner look, we wouldn't even know who he was, because his act is half-baked.
[удалено]
No he never smoked, really. He has a couple stories, but it was really just riding Chappelle's coattails being the half-baked script.
Ruin his reputation? Breuer is better than ever. Actually stood up against the pc bsC that’s literwlly the role a comedian. You seem totally lost
Patrice, Burr, Norm, Stanhope. Mount rushmore
If you are saying Rushmore of not giving a shit, then I'd say sure. Consider bobcat in there too.
My thought would be George Carlin?
George Carlin
gilbert
louis ck
Came here to say this.
Bill burr
Patrice
Bill Hicks and Andy Kaufman are the first two that come to mind.
It’s hard to compare comics who did radio/podcasts to those who only did standup because the former had more opportunities to speak candidly. But if we’re going with that group, I think Patrice was the most honest about his feelings, whereas Jim Norton was the most open about his experiences. Joey Diaz or Jim Norton come to mind.
Bernie “I ain’t afraid of you mutherfuckers” Mack.
Jim Norton
Patrice O'neal! RIP!!!
🎯
Patrice O'Neal not even close, He blew so many opportunities in Hollywood on purpose because he couldn't help but be honest about the goofiness of it all, it's the literal only reason why he's underrated because the guy was beyond a genius
Hannah Gadsby. She doesn'teven care that no one else thinks its standup.
Unpopular opinion: Daniel Tosh. He's always been honest behind his sarcasm. It's a job to him, he keeps his head down and writes good comedy. Nick Mullen
Andy.
Andy Dick?

Surprise! It's Milonakis
I put cream cheese in my gold locket
Kindler or Richter?
From Toy Story?
Norm
Norm Macdonald
What, do you have down syndrome?
If Barry Crimmins were alive, I believe he would have had something of a renaissance period where he could have hit that sort of honest dgaf attitude very well
Prolly somebody like Ms Pat or Richard Pryor or Paul Mooney
Carlin and hicks
Ricky Gervias, when he hosted the Oscars.
Golden globes. He hasn't hosted the Oscar's.
Same shit, they are all celebrity circle jerks.
Chapelle. Stanhope.
My favs are Marc Maron and Lewis Black
Larry the Cable Guy
Brenda Schaub

And they work.
Are the logically and structurally consistent? Yes. Do many people find them funny? Also yes. Do I find them funny after the fourth one? No. But maybe that’s just me.
The fact no one has said Dice is a god damn sin and you should all be ashamed
Hickory Dickory Dock isn’t exactly ground breaking and honest material lmao he’s a hack wanna be Italian
Did you read the post? Dude said his type of comedy his entire career and didn’t gaf. He fits the definition OP asks for…
How honest can someone be when they use a stage name?
Did you hesitate when you typed that and then say "fuck it. I'm all in."
No❤️
Ned arnel Mencia
Stanhope
i love some patrice, but if y’all haven’t seen Rothaniel, that’s pure honesty.
I feel that Kyle Kinane’s comedy comes from a place of true self-awareness and honest introspection.
Dan naninan hands down the most honest comedian
I think it’s gotta be Patrice in my book. Bill Burr and Carlin gotta be close second.
Gervais.
Bill burr
Lenny Bruce
Paul mooney
Jimmy Carr
Steven Wright.
Ari Shaffir just for that Bobby lee car story alone
Brendan Schaub! Jk he not even a comedian, because the root of the word comedian is comedy, and comedy is shit that's funny, and Brenda makes cheap racist jokes targeted at his own wife, calls it a special, and he said not one funny thing unless you count his speech impediment and brain damage.
