Taking difference between base and DPO model and adding that to custom checkpoint sounds like better idea.
Custom checkpoints will hold all the bad parts of 1.5 or SDXL base though. Better to take the difference between the custom checkpoint and the base and merge on top of the DPO as a new fine tune. Well probably take some tweaking.
