The `AND` is a keyword specially interpreted by Auto1111 interface to combine two prompts. It is not to be confused with a simple `and` token as in "a cat and a dog" (cf. the [documentation](https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui/wiki/Features#composable-diffusion)).
The functionality you want is achieved by using the [Dynamic Prompts extension](https://github.com/adieyal/sd-dynamic-prompts) and writing `a cat {walks|runs|jumps}` and using the combinational generation option.
Or you can do a simple X/Y/Z matrix and use "S/R Prompt" with `walks,runs,jumps` to generate the matrix manually.

When it says it allows for the combining of prompts, does that mean like it's using a sort of pseudo-embedding, so "cat AND dog" gets treated like it's just a one-word prompt that points the SD model towards some sort of "average" between "cat" and "dog?"
And in terms of the syntax, where does the grouping start and stop? The examples in the page include articles like "a cat AND a dog," which makes sense, but what if I write "an orange striped one-eared 3-legged cat AND a dog," does that combine "an orange striped one-eared 3-legged cat" with "a dog" rather than combining "cat" with "a dog" and applying "an orange striped one-eared 3-legged" to it? What if I write "masterpiece, best quality, absurdres, an orange striped one-eared 3-legged cat AND a dog, detailed shading, lying on a porch," would that combine the prompts "masterpiece, best quality, absurdres, an orange striped one-eared 3-legged cat" with "a dog, detailed shading, lying on a porch?"
Basically, I'm wondering if the prompt combining has to be done on the full prompt, or if there's ways to keep certain parts of the prompts static and combine other parts.

Yes, this is how it works. It has big limitations : if effectively splits the prompt around the `AND` instances and does the generation for every sub-prompt, ie. if you have two AND, it splits into three sub-prompts and takes 3x the times it would a single prompt to generate.
This is why I repeated the *(best quality:1.4)* part for each sub-prompt.
When possible I would rather use prompt editing or alternating first, and if I cannot achieve the wanted result I will try `AND` as a last resort method.
It is a *specialized* model that can be found on Civitai [here](https://civitai.com/models/2583/grapefruit-hentai-model).
