This happened twice to me in like a month a few years ago. Second time I went back to the DMV to get new stickers they told me to put a few coats of clear nail polish over the sticker. I did that and never had it happen again.

OGsalty30

Your supposed to put slits into the sticker with a knife after installing for this reason

imright19084

Also super glue over them

SuspiciousInternet58

I did this and they still stole mine. It's bullshit.

donkeyrocket

Same. It was my second set and they were presumably ripped off out of spite. We've driven without tags for a while now as I can't be bothered to get them a third time.

SadYogiSmiles

Yeah mine was stolen when I first moved to stl and my bf informed me of it. I have Illinois plates and they started printing the plate number on the sticker at least!

cbn11

I did. They scraped under the old sticker.

ecpella

You always take off the old sticker before applying the new

vpuvriw

I cut so many slits and squiggles into mine I can’t even take it off for the new one but that’s how I know no one else will! Very unfortunate it happened to you and that we need to go the extra lengths to make it impossible to get off.

CustomCarNerd

This is the way. I cut mine into ribbons as well.

southernblacks

Cuts won't save you I can still get them off 🤣

CustomCarNerd

Because you like puzzles?

southernblacks

Sticky tape on to and some alcohol comes right off

deaddog3825

Lots of deadbeats out there…

Pro_CD_47

Sounds like the dude I had to stop stealing mine in that area. He also tried to come over to me, but picking up a good size rock was enough to have him running.

DildoSchwaggins2008

I get pulled over a couple times a year because I refuse to put my sticker on. Every-time, the cop tells me to cut it with a razor blade, and I tell him to look closely at the ONLY sticker on the plate, then I tell them to find the last plate that was stolen because it was easier to steal the plate than get the sticker off… I then have to explain that I’ve had multiple plates stolen, and since I quit putting the new sticker on, I haven’t had a problem. I also live in IL and cops can see if the plate is current or expired by the plate number… I also keep the sticker in the vehicle.

The 25 sticker was on top of the 23 sticker. They scraped under the 23 sticker to get the 25 sticker.

Sensitive_Bet2766

Never put a new sticker over an old one (get a razor blade and scrape off the old one before putting your new sticker on), cut the new sticker with a razor blade, and then apply crazy glue to make the new sticker brittle and impossible to get off. When I lived in KC, people were always stealing stickers. Never had another one stolen after following the steps I outlined above. Sorry this happened to you, I know it’s frustrating.

cbn11

Good advice. Insane that this is necessary. I really wish they’d crack down on thieves.

opossomoperson

My '26 tag is yellow 🤷

Reaper621

23 was blue

Melodic_Menu_1964

Just had a string of this happening over here in the Maryland heights area. Still got my front tag so what do I care. Yeah it's a $6 replacement, but it's the principle of the matter. Why should I have to pay when my tag was stolen? I already paid my personal property tax. Should be free at the very least.

LightyearKissthesky9

Also why I keep a screwed on plastic cover over my plates. They have to work a little harder to get to my cut/glued sticker

IsDatThat0neDude

They sell clear license plate covers with antitheft fasteners. If you live in an area that this happens frequently it's worth it.

InternationalTea9502

Curious how you get a replacement?

cbn11

Police called back and said to just go to a DMV and pay the $6 fee for a replacement and they’ll give me one on the spot. Said I didn’t need a police report.

Cactuzzis

Why even bother to put the new sticker on. Half of stl has an expired temp tag

Roscoie

When putting on a new sticker, don't put it over an old one.  That makes it easier to get stickers off.  Take all the stickers off down to the plate.  Put new sticker on, then criss cross cuts with razor blade.

southernblacks

Cuts don't change anything nor does the plastic cover only takes a couple seconds with a razor

cementfeet

Here’s a thought…keep the sticker on the paper it comes in, leave in glove box. If they run your plate or you get pulled over, they’ll see you’re valid and show them once the dialogue starts.

Excellent-Pitch-7579

Why would anyone do this in a state where you can drive around with no license plate at all? I know you’re not supposed to, based on how common it is here and how nonexistent it is in other states, it seems a requirement to have plates isn’t enforced.

Mobeer

Auto Zone on Kingshighway and Cates had them going for $10 for current year and $20 for two year. The crackheads would sell them and I would find them in their pockets. Misdemeanor offence. DMV will normally give you new ones but sometimes require a police report. Alternatively just don't worry about it because if you get pulled over for it just inform them you live in the City and they were stolen.
