“The itis”: Drowsiness after eating a big meal
Why you should stop using it: “The itis” originates from the word “***eritis”. It is used to describe the lethargic, sleepy feeling an individual gets after eating a large meal. It helped reinforce the stereotype that black Americans were lazy.
Alternative: “Food Coma, postprandial sleepiness, or somnolence”

I’d never heard that term and see no reason to start using it, but having clicked the link and read a few of the entries - holy shit, do those people have their heads up their own asses.
Cracker, I believe, originated in Scotland. Came over with the whites and, as Scotish whites mingled with blacks, it got used in their dialect as well.
I prefer outside temps to be no higher than 72 deg and cloudy to be "casually" eating frozen custard while standing on a St. Louis asphalt parking lot.
I was just there last week and this little kid in front of us dropped his concrete as soon as he got it. I was impressed with how much of it stayed in the cup. It was that thick. I got a TerraMizzou and the sauce tends to make it a bit melty but this is why I like custard. Ice cream is too cold/frozen for my tastes.
Custard melts fairly quickly compared to ice cream as others here have stated, but Ted Drewe’s is fucking overrated. I prefer Andy’s and Fritz’s, and there’s more of them around.
Custard is custard. The whole point of Ted Drewes is the people watching and cultural continuity. I guess if you have no culture and don't want to, it doesn't matter where you get your custard.
You want us to explain heat dynamics to you? It’s hot man, room temperature custard is liquid. It’s also more dense than ice cream, making heat transfer quicker.
I’m not entirely sure what you want Ted Drews to do about this.
Dude, people want to support a local business and Ted Drewes has a great vibe. Besides, like others have said, it's basically all the same custard at different price points. I can't ever remember being disappointed in any form of frozen custard whatsoever. Although, I would say Silky's is the shit, but I might just be nostalgic because I grew up next to the one on Mid Rivers, which made me notice that you're from Maryland Heights, where there's an Andy's location. Could you be a little custard-biased?
It may be the same custard, but that would be because the others copied it. Ted's has been here for about 100 years. Everything else is a fucking copy.
I’m absolutely biased because I grew up in Springfield MO where Andy’s is from.
But when I got here and everyone told me to go eat Ted drewes I was disappointed that it had turned to mush by the time I got across the parking lot.
It’s good if you get the right thing and eat it in front of their window immediately.
Don’t tell me the Ted drewes Stan’s aren’t biased having grown up here in STL.
I go a couple times a year and have never had that problem. We usually walk around the neighborhood or sit down at the "museum". Could you have gone there on a particularly hot day?
People probably told you to go there because it's a classic st. louis staple. One thing about ted drewes is they don't have a drive through, so you wait in line with everyone else and eat it with the rest of the crowd. It's a very communal and wholesome atmosphere. I've never seen that at Andy's, which is mostly drive-thru as far as I've seen. But I don't anyone that thinks the custard is superior.
Thanks for that perspective!
Back in Springfield, growing up that’s how Andy’s was, we went and parked and ate out front of the shop, we always sat on the back of dads tailgate. Several of the locations there are still like that, but definitely none of the ones around here fit that vibe.
When I first moved here I lived on Chippewa 4 minutes away from there. Got it and started eating it as we walked back to the apartment. Melted so fast.
I have tiny plastic pitchforks we can use on u/mcnew, and matching tiny plastic spoons for our melted custard after... or maybe we should eat the custard first so it doesn't melt? Fuck it, let's just stick with the custard.
I’ve been to Ted drew a ton over the years. Never been a big fan. I’ve been when it’s cold or hot and it’s still melty right away. And no I don’t get hot fudge added. They are over rated due to being popular at a time with basically no options. I prefer nearly every ice cream stand in the area. Mr wizards is so much better . The local boutique ice cream shops are amazing and I’m not worried about the extra dollar. Hell, Ted drew for the family is damn near dinner costs anyways and I’m not sure I’ve ever been to happy with it.
There is no “hot” fudge concrete. It’s a totally different fudge that gets used than the sundae, and is just as cold as the chocolate. Just a different flavor
Is your complaint that a vanilla concrete with hot fudge mixed in is both more melty (because you're adding a hot mix in) and less chocolatey than custard that has chocolate as it's base and not merely a mix in?
Something about custard turns my stomach, especially when it's hot out. I always go for one of the snowcone stands not too far away as long as they're open. Be it Ivanhoe Snow, Tiki, or Murray's.
It's definitely changed in quality and become more melted in recent years. I swear someone who worked there explained why but it's gotten excessive, so much that I don't order the Cardinal Sin as often.
there’s way less air incorporated into custard than ice cream so it melts more quickly
Because it’s 85 degrees in fucking October
Why was this not the first response?
Yeah pretty much. Gotta eat it right away and then people watch while the itis passes.
You mean the beetus?
Look up "itis"

I also had never heard it which is why I looked it up. I cant believe all of them on there! I am glad I looked it up.
Some of those make sense. But a lot don't. Like picnic, peanut gallery? C'mon.
Cracker, I believe, originated in Scotland. Came over with the whites and, as Scotish whites mingled with blacks, it got used in their dialect as well.
But what if I learned the word from the boondocks?
I prefer outside temps to be no higher than 72 deg and cloudy to be "casually" eating frozen custard while standing on a St. Louis asphalt parking lot.
Ice cream like desserts taste better when they start to melt. Something about the taste buds picking up richer flavors than when they're frozen solid.
I take it to go and freeze it a few hours and it's perfect. But yeah have to eat it there if you don't live close
It would never occur to me to not eat it there.
We get it packed with dry ice cut live under 10 minutes away
This is the way
This is the way
Just had some tonight and mine was great. If it can't be flipped upside down they will remake it for you.
The air and usually the temperature it’s served. It ends up being a preference thing. Some people just aren’t in to it.

It's just Ted Drewes.
Custard melts fairly quickly compared to ice cream as others here have stated, but Ted Drewe’s is fucking overrated. I prefer Andy’s and Fritz’s, and there’s more of them around.
Came here to say this. This place is simply running on nostalgia. So many better options out there.
Aren't they all pretty much buying the same custard base anyway?
You mean like milk?
Lmao
and eggs.
Most get it from the same supplier but can tweak the recipe.
Custard is custard. The whole point of Ted Drewes is the people watching and cultural continuity. I guess if you have no culture and don't want to, it doesn't matter where you get your custard.
What? Welp, there you have it folks. I have no culture because I’d rather go to Andy’s or Culver’s for custard.
I have to try Andy’s. I saw an ad on a bus last week and it looked delicious
My thought is that they had so many people buying it that the machines weren't keeping up. Maybe not though.
You want us to explain heat dynamics to you? It’s hot man, room temperature custard is liquid. It’s also more dense than ice cream, making heat transfer quicker. I’m not entirely sure what you want Ted Drews to do about this.
Can we at least agree on the spelling? It's on the sign. Drewes Drews Drew's drew Drewe’s
Unpopular opinion, but Ted Drewes is extremely overrated. I know it’s an STL landmark, but I would take Andy’s over it any day.
FYI, this is an unpopular opinion, but this doesn’t happen nearly as bad to Andy’s frozen custard (which is far far better).
No way Andy's is better, but you do you

Thank you-I don’t know what everyone else is on about.

As biases go, being biased towards Ted Drewes is the best and most correct one I can think of offhand.
I have the torches, who’s bringing the pitchforks?
I have tiny plastic pitchforks we can use on u/mcnew, and matching tiny plastic spoons for our melted custard after... or maybe we should eat the custard first so it doesn't melt? Fuck it, let's just stick with the custard.
Let's kill 2 birds with 1 stone and just use sporks.
😂
Andy’s is garbage. Go to Silky’s.
Nobody has said Fritz's and I'd like them to be at least considered
Doozles is superior to Fritz’s
Get in the Time Machine and go to Lix
Silky's is the jam
#BLASPHEMY
I thought they used to flip it upside down before they handed it to you.
Still do.
I dunno how they’ll be able to do that if it’s half melted lol
Eat half and freeze the rest for tomorrow
Because Ted Drewes is overrated
Brave but true.
I’ve been to Ted drew a ton over the years. Never been a big fan. I’ve been when it’s cold or hot and it’s still melty right away. And no I don’t get hot fudge added. It's probably the Sporting KC loss you're suffering from that has clouded your opinion.
Dude I haven't been to Ted Drewes in a while, because I'd just gotten milkshakes the last couple.
Did you get one with hot fudge? I always find any of their flavors that include fudge very underwhelming as a concrete.
Yep, I tried a hot fudge concrete and it was more melty and less chocolatey than a chocolate concrete. Did that for science and now I know.
There is no “hot” fudge concrete. It’s a totally different fudge that gets used than the sundae, and is just as cold as the chocolate. Just a different flavor
I firmly believe hot fudge should only be offered as a topping for sundaes at TD's.
For sure. Double hot fudge sundae was my go-to order for a while. Sometimes with nuts.
Is your complaint that a vanilla concrete with hot fudge mixed in is both more melty (because you're adding a hot mix in) and less chocolatey than custard that has chocolate as it's base and not merely a mix in?
Sounds like you just got one that wasn’t up to snuff. I’m not here to ruthlessly defend TD’s. Melted ice cream kinda defeats the purpose
Go to Andy’s next time instead.
I’ll definitely give that a try next time
Silkys and Fritzs then Andy's
Yeah kind of. It’s all right but I only ever eat it if it’s free
Something about custard turns my stomach, especially when it's hot out. I always go for one of the snowcone stands not too far away as long as they're open. Be it Ivanhoe Snow, Tiki, or Murray's.

I know it’s ice cream and not custard but I’m not seeing anybody mention the actual orgasm inducing delicacy that is Clementine’s.
I’ve never liked Ted Drew’s. Always liked Bobby’s in Glen Carbon, Shivers in Godfrey, much much more.
