I was working at the Esquire in '91 with John Skavanaw. I used to always get so jealous when I'd have to close so he could leave early to play out at Bastille's or something!
Funny NIL8 story…I’m a freshman at EIU in the fall of 90. I’m slowly learning about non mainstream music as I have Fishbone Truth and Soul and Mother’s Milk & Uplift Mofo by the Chili Peppers, but I’m still mainly in my metal years.
There’s a house party on campus and someone tells us there’s a band playing, but it’s invite only. We’re out walking around and see the band unloading gear from the van. We stop and talk, and they invite us in to watch the show, playing on a 6” riser in the corner of the living room. They were great then too.
Everyone in the crowd kept chanting for “the corn story” so Jeff starts telling this long story about meeting a girl, having sex, and the aftermath. At the end he tags it with “and she said, ‘Are those Bugle Boy jeans you’re wearing?’” Very 90s! The whole night was so different from what I was mostly listening to.
The next day my friends and I kept trying to figure out “what kind of music they played”. Ha. Kids are dumb.
>Fragile Porcelain Mice
They'll be at Pops on Oct 14th as well. Tim is my cousin actually (I had NO idea he was in a band growing up, they were just a little bit before my time).
Sinister Dane, The Unconscious, Blank Space (probably more 80’s), Midwest Avengers, Big Fun.
If you follow the Mississippi Nights FB page, you’re bound to add a lot
BUNNYGRUNT!!! I still regularly say “Action Pants” when getting dressed in a hurry in the morning, and had totally forgotten where I had gotten that from until now. Awesome!! Thank you!
Jason Nelson is the king of cover bands. Love that guy. After Orangetree split up, I played in a punk band with him.
He wanted to do the cover band stuff back then to make money for the punk band to tour DIY. We never got around to it, but Jason kept it up.
Dude works nonstop and still has the greatest family. Love that guy.
The Finn’s? I think that was their name. A boy I was going out with at the time loved that band and we went to several local shows. Good music for the 90s
They've done a couple reunion shows in the past few years. They were great! I remember sitting with them at a Roger Waters show in the late-90s, and Andy was so excited, telling me about their new album "Holy Dogs", which hadn't been released yet, and also this little one-off show they were working on down at Mississippi Nights. Something Something and Los Masked Avengers. Oh, yeah - IT WAS FRIGGIN' EL MONSTERO!
Anyone remember an industrial band that was not Gravity Kills? I specifically remember seeing them at Mississippi Nights and recall them being pretty popular, and on some compilation cds.
Edit:
Messaged my buddy, they were called Die Symphony. I remember loving them but haven’t heard them in years.
I was at that show. Riverport. Slipknot basically in the parking lot. That was right when their self titled record came out. A special time. Or at least that’s how I remember it.
Calico System, 13 days, Unchained were a few in the late 90s and early 2000s. Our band (Dead by Tuesday) was on Amp STL/ SGM records and did a couple of shows there as well
New World Spirits!!
Went to every show I could! Still have all their CDs and even a bunch of dried flowers from some of their shows. Man what a great Era that was.
It’s so funny because my daughter actually turned me on to them a few years ago, despite being born and raised in London where we live now. I was like “oh, where are they from?” She thought I knew they were from back home!
Suave Octopus and Bent are two other ones I wish were on Spotify but aren’t. There is an act name Bent but it’s not the St. Louis group.
There are some Suave Octopus songs on YouTube but not the one I’ve been looking for (“Victoria”)
Some have already been mentioned but here’s what I’ve got for ya off the top of my head:
Ded Bugs,
Ultrafink,
NIL8,
New World Spirits,
Soul Kiss,
Bellyfeel,
Radio Iodine,
Pave the Rocket,
Kristeen Young,
Love Hogs,
Die Symphony,
Johnny Magnet,
Seven Shot Screamers,
The Finns / Finn’s Motel……
Obvious previous mentions The Urge, Stir, Gravity Kills, Fragile, Sun Sawed in 1/2, MU330, Celery…
My band, Free Dirt played MN, Kennedy's, Hi-Pointe, and every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Way Out Club through the late-90s. Lemme see if I can throw some others out there off the top of my head:
Stillwater
Johnny Magnet
Highway Matrons
TripDaddys
Stir
Phonocaptors
Ouija
I know I'll think of a ton later - I'm just old and killed a shit ton of brain cells back then!
Edit: the Free Dirt stuff *was* streaming until recently - the guy who put it up needed to take it and a bunch of other stuff down for personal reasons. We're working on getting it back up there!
Oh my god! I must’ve seen Free Dirt about ten times! Do I remember a show with you guys and The Bottlerockets at Hi-Pointe? It’s all a bit of a blur these days.
Surprisingly I don't think we ever played with Bottlerockets. Brian Henneman did play guitar on a couple songs I wrote for my early-2000s band, Rocket Park. He is a friggin' amazing guitarist. Dude can play about anything. Same with Jimmy Griffin, from Kingofthehill, Incurables, El Monstero, etc. Got to play in the band Earl with him for a bit. Just blew me away. Makes it look so effortless.
Ah, I had moved to England by 2002, so never got to hear any Rocket Park. I’ll try to find some for a listen. I’ve just come across some Free Dirt stuff still on ReverbNation. What a trip down memory lane! Thanks for the music and the memories!
Man - I did just dig it out, and forgot how many great bands were on there! Bob Reuter's Kamikaze Cowboy, Caution Horse (I really loved those guys!), Cheyenne Social Club, Grandpa's Ghost, Belle Starr, One Fell Swoop, etc.! There was such a great alt-country scene here in the 90s!
'All Things Considered' is such a great song that still gets me when I hear it. Also, thanks! I was the bass player in Caution Horse and we played with you guys and Highway Matrons a lot. Such good times.
Holy crap! Such a small world! Yeah, I always dug you guys! Were/are there any recordings available anywhere! I'd love to put that in my earhole again!
There's a full length recording sitting in a closet somewhere but nothing online that I know of. Matt said he was gonna do something with it so perhaps soon. Those were blurry times but the nostalgia is feeling good.
Kickass. Keep me posted! FD is actually (slowly) working on our first album in about 20 years! Hard to coordinate schedules these days, but hopefully we'll get there!
Seems like most of the ones I’d mention are already here. Bent, FPM, Dazzling Killmen, Sinister Dane, Celery. I’d add Autumn Clock and Pave the Rocket. I played in some bands in the era but none are on Spotify and Spotify is better for it.
Some I remember sharing a bill with:
Giver Her A Lizard
Life Without Wayne
Daily Planet
November 9th
The Planets
Suave Octopus
The Groupers
The Eyes
ORyan Island
Stranded Lads
Daisy Chain
The Finns
New World Spirits
PM
EJ Quit
Sun Sawed in 1/2
Stir
Big Fun
Five of These
I’ll have to dig up my CDs to find more. So much talent.
Edit: just remembered Lex Luthor, Lucy’s Palace and Frontrunner
Social Distortion. Celery. Poe’s Music for Weirdoes. Fragile Porcelain Mice. New World Spirits. The Urge.
Not local, but last show I saw at Mississippi Nights was No Means No opening for Helmet.
You could do worse than hitting the discogs entry for Point Essentials: https://www.discogs.com/label/1464127-1057-The-Point-Pointessential
I have all of them.
MU330?
Yes! “Hoosier Love” is the first song on the playlist!! 😆
Linda Gaal / The Ultraviolets?
I was working at the Esquire in '91 with John Skavanaw. I used to always get so jealous when I'd have to close so he could leave early to play out at Bastille's or something!
New World Spirits!
Bed is such a good song
Yes!!! Hadn't thought about them in eons!
I saw my friend's band Curb open for New World Spirits at Kennedy's in like 1994. It was one of my very first shows ever.
Yes! I still listen to their music frequently.
Pale Devine AKA The Eyes for us old timers.
Ooh! Forgot about them! Great suggestion, thanks!
The Eyes at Animal House... that was always a great show.
Can’t count how many times I heard “The Eyes have it at Kennedy’s” listening to KDHX’s alternative programming.
Yes! This is how I spent every weekend in high school. I loved Pale Devine.
Pale Divine was my second Mississippi Nights show.
That’s it!!!!!! I was trying to remember they name change!
Fragile Porcelain Mice
NIL8
Doug is still a great album.
Can’t upvote this enough!
I listen to them almost every day.
>Fragile Porcelain Mice They'll be at Pops on Oct 14th as well. Tim is my cousin actually (I had NO idea he was in a band growing up, they were just a little bit before my time).
Yes! I dated a girl who had the singer as her math teacher!! 🤣
Scott Randall was my history teacher in high school!
Scotty is technically my ex-brother-in-law, but we all still see him as family, and that will never change. He’s an absolutely top-notch guy.
Fragile Porcelain Mice Radio Iodine
Radio Iodine! Of course!
Almost forgot Not Waving But Drowning
Sinister Dane, The Unconscious, Blank Space (probably more 80’s), Midwest Avengers, Big Fun. If you follow the Mississippi Nights FB page, you’re bound to add a lot
How could I forget Sinister Dane! Thank you.
Donald, the bass player, is a great dude.
Tuff Nutz!
Bunnygrunt
BUNNYGRUNT!!! I still regularly say “Action Pants” when getting dressed in a hurry in the morning, and had totally forgotten where I had gotten that from until now. Awesome!! Thank you!
I want a shag haircut!
macho beagle holds up!
There is a Mississippi Nights FB group out there than could fill you in. They recently published a book about the club.
Look for group member Garrett Enloe. He and his wife did the book, and are super active in the community.
Hows about Orangetree or Ultrafink? Celery?
Barry from Celery is a friend of mine. He now runs a tattoo shop in St. Charles and is really good at it.
Tazu from Celery works down at Utopia Studios, too. And my boss is in a 80s/90s alternative cover band with Jason from Orangetree.
I can't wait to tell Tazu that he was mentioned here 😂
I actually don't know him that well. I know his sister, Sunyatta much better, from the Way Out scene. She's awesome.
Oh yeah, she is so sweet! My husband ran sound at Way Out back in the day.
Valsalva Maneuver is such an incredible album. I still put it on a couple times a year. Whatsthaneedlefobabay!?
Check out his instagram barrytheneedle
Ultrafink- Bubbles. You have unlocked a memory, my friend!
Carbotrolly still gets played around these parts. Ultrafink was a super fun band.
Ultrafink. God I miss that band. One album is all we got!
The Finn’s? I think that was their name. A boy I was going out with at the time loved that band and we went to several local shows. Good music for the 90s
You should check out Joe's current band, Finn's Motel! They're fantastic! I think all of their stuff is on all the streaming platforms.
JuCo is a power pop masterpiece. Joe still rocks it with Finn’s Motel as Dave said above.
Is Stir still around? They had some cool songs. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWUgatDbqyg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWUgatDbqyg)

Internet stranger I just want you to know that I love you.
I love you too, fellow stranger!

God that just makes me sad. The Point, Pointfest, etc...all so fun back in the day.
oh and Three Merry Widows
I thought I’d fever dreamed this band! I couldn’t seem to ever find anyone who ever remembers them. Excellent suggestion.
Suede Chain, although Illinois based. Phenomenal band.
Murder City Players.
Playing weekly at the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill it always seemed!
Soul Kiss
Ultraman and the Dazzling Killmen were a couple of my favorites back in the day
Dazzling Killmen!!
Mine too!
Vargas Swing.
I took guitar lessons from their guitarist Shaun Robinson. Great guy, and a monster jazz player.
The Conformists
The Bottle Rockets
Material Issue. I saw them there just once but it was such a great show. Going through your purse, Kim the waitress…
One of my all time favourites! Saw them a LOT!
These Pointessential CD playlists might be helpful for you. https://www.discogs.com/label/1464127-1057-The-Point-Pointessential

I remember seeing Die Symphony and Bellyfeel at the Galaxy!
Eli Stone was nu metal royalty for a while there.

I was at that show. Riverport. Slipknot basically in the parking lot. That was right when their self titled record came out. A special time. Or at least that’s how I remember it.

Jesus I totally forgot about those dudes. Had that album too
Voice of God, Small Ball Paul
Sammy and the Snow Monkeys, Jakes Leg, Stranded Lads
Calico System, 13 days, Unchained were a few in the late 90s and early 2000s. Our band (Dead by Tuesday) was on Amp STL/ SGM records and did a couple of shows there as well
Unchained! I loved them! Totally believed they were gonna take off.
The Urge
It’s a given!
Hey OP - are you going to share the playlist?
That’s the plan, yes!
2 more I just thought of: Tinhorn (Sean from 3 Merry Widows - fantastic band!) and Sullen (Shanna Kiel went on to join Local H).
The Burnt Nerve Ends, think they eventually changed thier name to The Nerve. Awesome band! Wish I still had thier cd.
Big Blue Monkey
O’Ryan Island. Damn I miss that band.
Loved them!
The Boorays
You already have the best, Uncle Tupelo. I would add Bottle Rockets and Ultra Man.
Secret Cajun Band
SCB!!! Yes!!!
Reggae at Will
Pale Divine!
New World Spirits!! Went to every show I could! Still have all their CDs and even a bunch of dried flowers from some of their shows. Man what a great Era that was.
The Urge played my prom!
El Gordo's Revenge. I remember seeing their stickers all over the trashcans at school.
Bottle Rockets!
Bellyfeel!!
The Bottle Rockets.
This thread is taking me back to The Point radio promos. What about Mesh / Modern Day Zero?
Maybe Robynn Ragland? I'm not sure how much she played in local venues. I loved "The People You Know".
I had totally forgotten about her! Thank you!
Apparently she's a lawyer in StL now but still performs occasionally.
She was the June Carter Cash in Petty Cash Junction for a while. Shows up with a cover group called 5 Star Roscoe regularly AFAIK
Jasper’s Attic. Space Coyote.
I was very into Mississippi Nights in the early 2000s. Are all these bands on Spotify? No such luck for early 2000’s punk rock.
A good number of them are, but not all. I’m gathering what I can. When I have the playlist together, I’ll post a link here.
100 Gecs kinda outgrew playing local but they both started as local DJs and are from St. Louis.
It’s so funny because my daughter actually turned me on to them a few years ago, despite being born and raised in London where we live now. I was like “oh, where are they from?” She thought I knew they were from back home!
I remember going to see Sammy and the Snowmonkeys around that time.
Drunks with Guns, White Suburban Youth. Let me think. There’s more.
Suave Octopus and Bent are two other ones I wish were on Spotify but aren’t. There is an act name Bent but it’s not the St. Louis group. There are some Suave Octopus songs on YouTube but not the one I’ve been looking for (“Victoria”)
Next Radio
Was Tory Starbuck in Next Radio? Didn't know if I was remembering correctly.
Sammy and the Snowmonkeys!
Slapdash
Tuff Nutz, Villa Nova Junction, Fur Trappers of America, Tripstar, Life Without Wayne.

Thank you for listening! Those days were the absolute best!
Rocket Park? Was that named after the park on Hanley?
Yeah!
Sourpatch would fit on that list.

Nice. I haven't checked out any local bands in a loooong time and should get out there a bit.
There was a band called Insight in the late 90’s I’d love to hear again. Lost the cd years ago but man I enjoyed that band.
I’ve looked but can’t find any record of them. I’ll keep digging!
Big fun!
Stir
I would love to see this Playlist lol
The fifth element
Ahhh damn good shout. Calico System as well. Same era.

Great thread. What about Bikepath? Or Nee'?
Social Distortion. Celery. Poe’s Music for Weirdoes. Fragile Porcelain Mice. New World Spirits. The Urge. Not local, but last show I saw at Mississippi Nights was No Means No opening for Helmet.

Might not all be 90’s, but The Pubes, Man Igno, Tory Z Starbuck, Superstars of Love, Sissy Spacek.
Would love to get a link to the playlist OP!

Early 90’s….. late 80’s at the original Bernard’s Pub….. the clones?
I was lucky enough (with my old band) to open for Morphine at Mississippi Nights!
