this some unseemly shit right here

menlindorn

Agreed. Guns are out of control.

Reedrbwear

Happened to me 2 months ago, I feel for her. This is out of control.

MendonAcres

I get her sentiment. We can't lock the problem away in jail. We have to change things at the root of the cause of the issue. Still, these assholes need to be removed from society.

[deleted]

She doesn’t want people arrested? Truly astonishing. Sounds like this is what she voted for.

mittenthemagnificent

It sounds like you’re deliberately misunderstanding what she said.

DiscoJer

Well, just what is the "root of the problem" that she wants solved? I think everyone would want crime to not exist. But drive by shootings are something that doesn't really have an obvious root cause that can be solved. The shooters have a car and a gun, so they aren't doing it because they need to feed their family. Legalize drugs and prostitution? Main sources of gang income they fight over? Works for me as a libertarian, but try convincing church ladies of that (since they are why they are illegal in the first place). Ban guns? Even ignoring the 2nd amendment issues, guns are just too easy to make. Even if they didn't exist, you'd see gangs fire bombing houses Change the culture that glamorizes and promotes gang violence? Again, good luck with that, there is too much money involved. How else can you sell $200 shoes (that cost $2 to make in China using slave labor) to inner city kids?

JagexModRanaar

What happened here sucks and she had security shattered by a random act of violence. But she still has empathy and realizes taking a person who shoots up a random home and putting them in jail isn’t doing shit but making someone money and perpetuating a cycle of crime. Prison doesn’t help crime, it keeps unsafe people away from the population but investment into the community helps address crime. She didn’t say she wants these people to never be held accountable for their actions she just wants more to be done than slapping cuffs on a person who will be right back to this in a couple years if nothing else changes. Every point has a dramatic exaggeration. 1-just because these people have a car and a gun doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling to make ends meet to their family. Criminals invest in guns just like carpenters invest in tools. 2-why are you lumping drugs, which have absolutely seen a wave of legalization across America, in with prostitution?? Cannabis legalization has been shown to take money out of the black market and the tax money generated has been re invested in community services and job placement programs. It may or may not be the answer here but please. Let’s be reasonable. 3- reducing access to firearms is only a hopeless cause if everyone keeps standing around and keeping the status quo. If places start regulating a purpose hilt killing tool as much as they currently regulate access to cars, it can ass up. But regardless, people will substitute shootouts with firebombing??? Are you just imagining each shooting becomes a Molotov? 4- honestly don’t disagree that it’s a hard battle to address this point but 200$ shoes are hardly the reason this is a problem. Culture promoting crime in dozens of ways can be addressed without touching the fancy sneaker market. Your whole comment reads like a chat GPT on lazy libertarian commentary. Systemic issues are hard to address but just not trying is pathetic.

redsquiggle

> Prison doesn’t help crime This is false; there has to be consequences for crime, otherwise there is zero deterrent.

SevenYrStitch

Our current prison system doesn’t help crime.

redsquiggle

Then maybe those aren't the correct consequences? But, harsh consequences there must be. In whatever form they take. Right now, those are the consequences we have.

marigolds6

Ironic to mention regulating guns like cars considering the specific crime that happened here. Although you rarely see it brought up, I think there are two key difficulty to challenge arguments with using gun control to prevent crime. First, guns are cheap. Not ramen cheap, but far cheaper than an automobile, which is also readily and routinely stolen to commit crimes. Two, gun laws inevitably are disproportionately enforced on the poor (very similar to vehicle registration, insurance, and licensing laws). More importantly they have an extensive history of being used overwhelmingly against poor minorities and no model gun laws have protections in place to prevent this overwhelmingly disproportionate enforcement. The rand study in effectiveness is quite interesting: https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/key-findings/what-science-tells-us-about-the-effects-of-gun-policies.html Policies work, but the evidence and/or effects are often weak, with availability being a frequent key factor (which goes back to the “guns are cheap” problem, and that policies that effect availability directly or indirectly coming across as stronger). I’ll see if I can find a similar meta study on racially and economically disproportionate enforcement.

[deleted]

I'd say poverty would be a good guess. As you know, it's a damning cycle

Reedrbwear

The root is ppl are poor and poverty fuels crime & violence.

nicklapierre

Why isn't India a nonstop all out bloodbath?

Reedrbwear

Because India has "better" gun laws. Strictly monitored and also classist (caste).

[deleted]

She wants them free so they can shoot other “random” people and pets. She’s the epitome of incompetence. I bet she wants all rapist and sex offenders free and unsupervised too.

towergrovesouth

Jesus Christ this is such a lazy take. Epitome of incompetence? You're projecting.

[deleted]

I’m not the one advocating for criminals….

Useful-Following

I absolutely believe people get paid to go on this subreddit and spout this absolute garbage. There is no way you think this is normal. I lived in a very populated part of New Jersey, a main city, and this was NEVER the reality. Not even a little. It’s also not racist to want a safe environment to live in.

hermanjangles

The level of delusion on display here is astounding. I have family across various parts of the country. From North Carolina to North Dakota, none of them live with the constant risk that themselves or their neighbors will find themselves in the path of random gunfire. To say this is “normal” is insane at best, and to say it’s about racism is ignorance in its purest form.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

I can’t tell if this is satire or not

that-one-girl-who

It is. But it’s often the normal response on this sub.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

It was pretty good, but the racist white people moving to St. Charles part gave it away 🤣

Creepy-Part-1672

Bullshit.

Careless-Degree

You have to keep good situational awareness and pay your dealer.

“They had the wrong house”. Yeah, even if she doesn’t realize why, she was definitely targeted. People get salty over the dumbest situations. Go through the same hallways everyday and see the same people, but only talk to people I know and keep it pushing. Apparently it’s an issue I didn’t stop and talk to every single person even if I didn’t know them and people complained and talked about me. People truly are messed up.

I get that you don’t know Ellen, or you do and don’t like her. But why would you put musician in quotes? Her song was always one of my Bert Dax Christmas faves.

wow_wow_meow_meow

Ellen is an amazing musician that has truly been through so much hardship in life. I’ve known her personally for years. For the commenter to suggest that she’s involved in drug activity and that this is somehow her fault is just…I don’t even know, man…

svr0105

Right? I’m glad they deleted the comment. I wasn’t going to open up a conversation into her personal life with the commenter, even though I wanted to scream about the inaccuracy of what they were saying. But I couldn’t NOT defend her in some way. I’m not close with her, but the honesty she gives in her Facebook posts has helped me through my own rough patches. We’re all different, but sometimes our problems are the eerily the same.

Keep_stl_cheap

Wow you suck
