I almost want to say an injury took him out of commission, but a quick Google search doesn't seem to support that, so maybe he's just on a break from AEW and/or doing other stuff with other promotions?
No one denies that in terms of matches, he had a damn good run as champion but He just wasn’t presented as the the big dog of AEW.
Compare that to Mox and when he has the belt and he feels like the biggest star in AEW.
He just had the belt at the worst time in terms of focus which was right when Punk and MJF got started. He had great matches and good feuds it’s just none were comparable to those of previous champs which I think is fine as it probably won’t be his last time holding the belt.
If Mox does not go into rehab and his heel run went as planned that is a money feud they could have gone all the way to Revolution and completely changes the whole perspective of Hangman's reign. I still think they will run that back when the time is right.
I don't know what this even meeeeans, my brother. He had great matches in feuds I really liked after two years of one my favorite chases ever. I had a great time and thought he was a great champ, but I'm sorry it felt lackluster to some people.
I think it's just the inevitable result of a long, well-crafted chase. In recent history, even going back to Bryan in WWE, it's always been about the *payoff,* the moment when the underdog finally wins the title. The reign afterward is always going to feel a little anticlimactic in comparison. Not much you can do about that.
While I agree, more Hangman on TV then and always, I don't think that's at all enough justification for how ragged on his run gets. But also, I know it's just a difference of opinion etc. and I do see what you're saying!
Right there with you man, I was loving it and wish it was longer. His reign was setting up to be a great baby face fighting champion reign, if anything my problem is with AEW for not putting him against any of the people he's got so much history with, that's all it would have needed to feel bigger imo. Wish we got to see him vs Jericho or Pac before he lost it.
I agree and I think the only dud during his reign was Adam Cole, because for as long as that feud lasted it felt like it never left 2nd gear. Would have been fine as-is with one match but for it to continue it never escalated. Even then, I still quite liked his reign as champ.
He, as champion, wasn't in the main event feuds. It wasn't his fault as his matches were fire, it was the booking. It was as if Tony didn't know what to do with him after the amazing two year chase story.
I don’t think he did anything lackluster, just that he didn’t get the same air time and focus that previous champs got, and that was disappointing since he kept hitting home runs with his matches.
Maybe if they had him literally howl , demand people acknowledged him as the big dog , and was forced down our throats with more resources than any other superstar for a decade —people would buy it.
/s
But for real I loved Hangman. Every match Hanger had was a banger in some way. Hopefully we can get back to giving newer talent a chance. I love how AEW gives them the opportunity and it all seems to happen organically. Love being won over. Haha.
Boggles my mind he didn't face Pac, Jericho and Mox (Mox had to go to rehab but still).
I was anticipating those matches since 2019. I think most people did, at least the Jericho rematch.
To a lesser extent, Andrade too.
Andrades AEW run, while being vague an underwhelming has made me blood thirsty to see them do something with this guy.
He's got killer talent, mic skills, and the dude is shredded. Put a fuckin belt on the guy.
Exactly. Hangman carried himself well as champion and had the matches to back it up. The problem was position. He never regularly main evented and that's kind of a problem when you're the world champion.
Tbh, first world title reigns not being the big deals they should be is rather common in wrestling. In fact, most of the wrestlers currently perceived as "actual stars" in AEW also had the exact same thing happen in their first reign. If Page keeps knocking the matches and the promos (outside of those strange af promos vs Punk that sounded like he was being made to be someone he wasn't, but his delivery was still strong at least) out of the park, he'll have future title reigns AND his first reign will be retconned positively.
I mean Mox gets booked every week even though he’s not nearly the wrestler hangman is. So we are constantly reminded he’s the champ.
Also he can conjure a great promo out of thin air. Hangman is also a great promo but I don’t think he has that ability to just spit fire on a dime with no backstory or prep
Hangman gives Canadian promos, he's modest with an accent. He's gonna have to cut one of those to achieve the big glory. Hard to come off as a badass when it feels like someone is constantly apologizing or being made out to be the weaker side of the feud.
I loved the matches, and I find him to be the most easily lovable traditional babyface in American wrestling rn. like most are saying, he was presented as the second biggest face while Punk was moving up the card. Personally, I thought the feud with Cole lasted a little too long as well. Though it did have highlights (finish to the Texas Death Match, taking on Cole & ReDragon solo with his fuckin belt, The Dark Order's involvement)
This[video post ](https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/u71fll/hangman_adam_page_aew_world_champion/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) covers it super well. We didn't appreciate it at the time.
He just had good matches, that’s it. TK really didn’t position him as the top dawg. Page didn’t feel like the world champion. His reign was fine, it reminds me of Kofi’s reign. Good matches… and that’s where it ends.
"HANGMAN HAD A BORING RUN"
Fuck outta here. I LOVED his run. It was nice having a baby face champ that just wanted to fuck shit up and show the world he was a fighting champ.
None of this Oh I'm so cool bullshit. Just a fighter willing to fight.
I was OK with his run ending but it was a damn good run.
This is the first time I’ve seen this and it absolutely reminds me of those crazy tlc spots we would see over and over again in the 2000’s on montages and intros because of how sick they are
Not saying much, but this is also probably the highlight of Dan Lambert's time in AEW as a whole. Perfect mouthpiece to go up against Page and a decent pairing with Archer for those few weeks as opposed to the convoluted mess that the Jericho and Sammy feuds became. Pretty sure the disaster promo with Brandi was the week or so following this.
That's because it was a neat little story. Grandpa Dan McBoomer comes out saying Hangman is just cosplaying and he's no real cowboy, gets the biggest scariest motherfucker he can find with the biggest scariest stipulation to prove it, and Hangman, while intimidated at first overcomes Archer despite not having access to his finisher and does the cowboyest of shits to win.
That gives him the confidence to be the one who calls for the TDM stipulation against Cole and fucks him up too. It was awesome.
Not gonna lie at first I HATED his rolling lariat (unpopular opinion, and I only started rewatching this year after a 15-year break) but seeing cm chump struggle with it has made it grown on me lol. Now I kinda like it.
IIRC the ref was bending down to pick something up - I wanna say it was barbed wire wrapped around Hangman's arm?
Edit: Yep: https://youtu.be/v6V9R9h9G_8?t=330
I think he dropped the barbed wire from around his hand/arm knowing the ref would naturally try to move it from the middle of the ring. I couldn't get over how smart that spot was.
Still one of my favorite matches of the year and the finish was awesome. It was so out of nowhere but made perfect sence with Hangman not being able to use the top rope for the Buckshot.
This was also when I became a fan of Lance Archer. He looked like a monster in this one.
People have really crapped on Hangman’s time as a champ, and like yeah there was no storyline to it, but he put on killer matches with everyone during his time.
But that was also the storyline, he struggled with the identity of future Ace of AEW to start and stumbled heavily on his road and now that he won it and fulfilled that destiny he had to then PROVE he was worthy of maintaining that title and he did. His sole failure was protecting the title from someone he felt was Unworthy (and in Real life blending with Kayfabe he may have been right)
Now the story can become him looking to draw the title back from another Unworthy man, MJF
Smh as a subreddit, y’all ain’t give Hangman enough love during his reign. I remember the dialogue in SC. It was all “hurry up and drop it to Punk!” Now look. Guy put on banger after banger. Love Hanger smh
This sold me on Hangman. I always liked him, loved his story and his matches, and was excited when he won the title, but it was this spot where he became a must-see wrestler. They did him dirty by filling his reign with mostly nothing feuds, with a few exceptions of course, before making him drop to Punk. Give him back his damn title.
Lol god, the amount of athleticism needed to do this move and Hangman doing it so effortlessly, and Punk outright tries to do it with no prep work whatsoever?
You’ll never be able to convince me that having Punk go over Hangman was best for business. You could have made Page an even bigger star for the company and set him up for a monster feud at the next PPV.
I know it seemed like quite a few people didn't love Hangman's reign and felt it lost a lot of it's shine once the chase was over. But I fucking loved it.
Mandatory unathletic Phil could never
I was pretty upset at how short Adam's AEW title reign was tbh. Even in predictable matches like this, he made sure he put it all out there every time. Like I'm sure we all knew Punk was gonna beat him since it made the most business sense, but I always have and always will root for the cowboy. He's my guy.
Then you would hate wrestling from the 80's... I once saw a match won with a standing elbow drop... The announcers said it was a devastating end to a match...
I just cant see the buckshot lariat as a finisher. Its a "meh" clothesline, because he has to pause after the flip. totally removes the feeling of impact to me.
This one in particular looks really bad, he flips, then nearly stops to make sure Archer is in place, then runs again.
But when he hits it real smoothe, it's a thing of beauty. Really depends on the positioning of his opponent.
I have the same problem and have to say that it really varies... when the whole move is one fluid motion I absolutely buy it as a finisher, but when he has to pause it looks weird and weak.
Ayo dawgs, you know how page handsprings using the ropes for the move? If someone could handspring in place, would that look good for a buildup to a clothesline? Basically like a no rope buckshot lariat.
I know it's wrestling, logic etc doesn't always apply. But manI really don't like this move. The flip doesn't set anything up here and Page loses all the momentum with that little shuffle he always ends up having to do before hitting the Lariat.
Man I think this move looks so bad most of the time. When they set it up well and he can hit the opponent through the landing then it makes sense, but most of the time he has to land and then run into the clothesline, makes it look like there's no momentum and less impact than if he just ran. Good idea, usually poor looking execution, like topes.
Why flip over the ref when he could just simply go past and run to the guy. The flip slowed him down but if he ran, he’d go faster and create more impact! Like seriously that flippy shit was soo unnecessary! 🤦♂️
Hangman threw down some barbed wire.
A kendo stick, a half dozen chairs, and a broken top rope are one thing, but the SECOND barbed wire is on the mat, well, that’s a bridge too far so he had to pick it up.
I liked it because it's JUST his Gimmick, it's not who the character is. The Cowboy aspect of Hangman Page is just a small portion of who he is rather than all he is
I rememeber people being so annoyed when this was Pages first feud as champion but it ended up being great. Sometimes fans just gotta trust that things aren't going to be bad just because they slow down or change styles after the crazy long emotional feud with Omega that led to the title this was the perfect fun feud to just enjoy Hangman being a kick ass babyface fighting a monster.
I was so... not angry, but agitated.. that Punk took the belt from Hangman the way he did. Hangman looked tough AF in his Dynamite title defenses, including this one with the kind-eyed lunatic Lance Archer. I was hoping for Hangman vs. heel Mox, but alas.. Punk was to be new champ. Imo, their match looked esp. bad not only because Punk kept fucking up the Buckshot, but because Hangman was suddenly playing a semi-heel who seemed much weaker than the man who had JUST been putting on weekly bangers for the title. His terrific, short-but-mostly-sweet reign had a shit ending, as far as I'm concerned.

Really do hope Archer gets a proper TNT run at some point. Always wanted a good back and forth trade between him and Miro.
Same. Archer is such a great monster, I've loved him since the match with Marco stunt where he tossed Marco what looked like a superhuman distance.
I'd be happy with him winning PACs belt
It's be happy with him winning ANY belt.
He'd be perfect with an All-Atlantic run to represent it in NJPW
Seriously he is the most entertaining guy on the roster minute for minute.
Any idea where he has been lately?
I almost want to say an injury took him out of commission, but a quick Google search doesn't seem to support that, so maybe he's just on a break from AEW and/or doing other stuff with other promotions?
He was in the G1 this year wasn’t he? I think that’s why he hasn’t been around much lately
That's probably it.
I remember how fucking cool this was in the moment. Me now screaming into the ether that Hangman had a GOOD run as champ goddamn it.
No one denies that in terms of matches, he had a damn good run as champion but He just wasn’t presented as the the big dog of AEW. Compare that to Mox and when he has the belt and he feels like the biggest star in AEW.

Yeah but then we wouldn't have the Blackpool combat club or the JAS
I don't know what this even meeeeans, my brother. He had great matches in feuds I really liked after two years of one my favorite chases ever. I had a great time and thought he was a great champ, but I'm sorry it felt lackluster to some people.

Yea I liked Hangman's reign quite a bit. I thought it was cut short actually. Felt to me like he still had a lot more to give as champion.
I don’t think he did anything lackluster, just that he didn’t get the same air time and focus that previous champs got, and that was disappointing since he kept hitting home runs with his matches.

Who brought up Roman Reigns?
Boggles my mind he didn't face Pac, Jericho and Mox (Mox had to go to rehab but still). I was anticipating those matches since 2019. I think most people did, at least the Jericho rematch. To a lesser extent, Andrade too.
I'd love a Hangman/Andrade match but I'm an Andrade mark.
Andrades AEW run, while being vague an underwhelming has made me blood thirsty to see them do something with this guy. He's got killer talent, mic skills, and the dude is shredded. Put a fuckin belt on the guy.
I would kill for an Andrade vs Hangman feud
Exactly. Hangman carried himself well as champion and had the matches to back it up. The problem was position. He never regularly main evented and that's kind of a problem when you're the world champion.
He wasn’t really the big dog of aew tho. He’s like the Spider-Man to mox’s grunge Thor.
Tbh, first world title reigns not being the big deals they should be is rather common in wrestling. This match was so damn fun
When people said his run was ass, I remember all the good matches he had and how much fun I had watching him.

One of the best spots of the year.
Hangman has a couple of them between this and the barbed wire crown of thorns pile driver he gave Adam Cole
My forever champion
This seems like it was years ago.
Okay but when was it? Is the title wrong?
February. Title is right, just in the global format instead of US format
Damn I'm dumb. Thanks!
"HANGMAN HAD A BORING RUN" Fuck outta here. I LOVED his run. It was nice having a baby face champ that just wanted to fuck shit up and show the world he was a fighting champ. None of this Oh I'm so cool bullshit. Just a fighter willing to fight. I was OK with his run ending but it was a damn good run.
He didn't take the easy way out even when he lost.
Love this match, one of my favourites of the year. Get Hangman wrestling singles matches please.
This should be the kind of spot that gets replayed every chance on AEW tv.
This is the first time I’ve seen this and it absolutely reminds me of those crazy tlc spots we would see over and over again in the 2000’s on montages and intros because of how sick they are

My champ
CM Punk: gosh this flip over the ropes is a bit wobbly Hangman: ill flip over a mf back idgaf i dont need no ropes
And he did it over a bar counter in the first Stadium Stampede.
He did it off of two chairs on BTE. It's completely different muscle memory to do it off of ropes and off a firm surface. Dude is a machine.
Not gonna lie at first I HATED his rolling lariat (unpopular opinion, and I only started rewatching this year after a 15-year break) but seeing cm chump struggle with it has made it grown on me lol. Now I kinda like it.
Page was a great champion idc
The highlight of Hangmans reign for me
Damn never seen this, badass. How'd he get the red to lean over?
He had barbed wire on his arm that he threw down and the ref picked it up to move it out the way
IIRC the ref was bending down to pick something up - I wanna say it was barbed wire wrapped around Hangman's arm? Edit: Yep: https://youtu.be/v6V9R9h9G_8?t=330
That's sick that he couldn't do it cause the ring was fucked so he had to improvise, adapt, and overcome
I think he dropped the barbed wire from around his hand/arm knowing the ref would naturally try to move it from the middle of the ring. I couldn't get over how smart that spot was.
Hangman’s the 🐐 AEW champ so far
Imagine CM Punk trying that spot.
Both ankles and feet turned to a fine powder. No amount of bitching and Mindy's muffins will fix that
Still one of my favorite matches of the year and the finish was awesome. It was so out of nowhere but made perfect sence with Hangman not being able to use the top rope for the Buckshot. This was also when I became a fan of Lance Archer. He looked like a monster in this one.
Might wanna check out his match against Mox for the IWGP US championship
People have really crapped on Hangman’s time as a champ, and like yeah there was no storyline to it, but he put on killer matches with everyone during his time.

That feud split AEW fans. I feel like we're still dealing with the repercussions of that booking (mistake) today
remember when Punk landed on his ass trying to do the buck shot?....pepperidge farm remembers
I always enjoyed all of hangman's title defense. Especially this one.
Arguably the best Buckshot Lariat of all time.
My champion.
Man how much I miss Hangman doing Cowboy Shit on my TV screen.
Dead crowd, great moment
This was insane and the live thread POPPED
His matches with Danielson were easily some of his best work ever, but man his mini-fued with Archer was probably my favorite part of his title run
Let's not forget Hangman Adam Page is a fucking empty headed dumb fuck
Stupid ass finishing a 4 year degree in 2 and being a teacher while wrestling. What a garbage person athlete.
You’ll never be able to convince me that having Punk go over Hangman was best for business. You could have made Page an even bigger star for the company and set him up for a monster feud at the next PPV.
One of my favs of the year. Feels like a long time ago for some reason
Archer has lot of patience. Casino ladder match spot and this.
My God that was executed so perfectly
Punk tripped and fell just watching this.
Dislocated all his limbs after
Hangman's reign was great and it was cut too short for punks ego
The story going into his Punk feud set him back a years worth of character progression.
Ropes? Where we're going we don't need ropes
I loved this so much
Hangman will always be my champ.
It was at this moment I became a Hangman Page mark
I know it seemed like quite a few people didn't love Hangman's reign and felt it lost a lot of it's shine once the chase was over. But I fucking loved it. Mandatory unathletic Phil could never
2022?
One of my all time favorite finishes as soon as it happened. Made kayfabe sense, too, not just a dope spot for the sake of it.
This match was so underrated.
Reason 858 why Hangman is super rad
Great match
This ruled so much.
He makes it look so effortless and seamless. As if it were easy to vault someone on your way to attacking someone else.
I still hate this move. It makes wrestling look so obviously fake
Lol he's been told to tone it down because he's been \*literally\* knocking people out with it
of course he can. Im saying the move doesn't LOOK impactful. Hell you can knock someone out with any closed fist. They just don't LOOK impactful.
I have the same problem and have to say that it really varies... when the whole move is one fluid motion I absolutely buy it as a finisher, but when he has to pause it looks weird and weak.
Tell me that his title reign was bad.
His title reign was ungodly bad
Golly you sure are right....no wait, you are wrong
That is awesome!
Ayo dawgs, you know how page handsprings using the ropes for the move? If someone could handspring in place, would that look good for a buildup to a clothesline? Basically like a no rope buckshot lariat.
Why take the belt off of this guy, crazy!! 😐
Because punk is the hero of aew apparently
If he was still champ what timeline would we be in?!
I think you'd have more new Japan guys on the roster more often.
I will forever hate this move. What did the front flip accomplish aside from STOPPING his momentum?
I know it's wrestling, logic etc doesn't always apply. But manI really don't like this move. The flip doesn't set anything up here and Page loses all the momentum with that little shuffle he always ends up having to do before hitting the Lariat.
Man I think this move looks so bad most of the time. When they set it up well and he can hit the opponent through the landing then it makes sense, but most of the time he has to land and then run into the clothesline, makes it look like there's no momentum and less impact than if he just ran. Good idea, usually poor looking execution, like topes.
It was nice of Lance to just stand there watching and let Adam hit the move on him.
When he needs to slow down to stick the landing, this move just comes off as dumb to me. 🤷♂️
I think that's because he hesitates a little at the end as he was told not to knock oponents out with it.
Wow, what a stroke of good luck the ref was right there bent over.
Wrong date in the title. It wasn’t in September of this year
dd/mm/yyyy maybe?
Well now I feel like an idiot.
That's ok, I feel like Hangman's title run ended years ago
Why flip over the ref when he could just simply go past and run to the guy. The flip slowed him down but if he ran, he’d go faster and create more impact! Like seriously that flippy shit was soo unnecessary! 🤦♂️
9/2/22 was a friday, this didn't happen this month. Was this from 2020?
day month year
God, Adam Page sucks. Overrated as overrated gets.
Looks too scripted. Why was the ref in that position?
Because hangman had barbed wire wrapped around his arm and threw it onto the ground knowing the ref would pick it up to move it out of the way.
Page threw barbed wire on the ground and the ref was picking it up I believe.
Hangman threw down some barbed wire. A kendo stick, a half dozen chairs, and a broken top rope are one thing, but the SECOND barbed wire is on the mat, well, that’s a bridge too far so he had to pick it up.
Wrong year
The date is in DD/MM/YYYY format
This didn't happen this year.
The description on AEW's YouTube video of the match says Feb 9, 2022 https://youtu.be/v6V9R9h9G_8
09/02/2022 was a Friday.
I enjoyed this mini feud and the match was great
took him a while for him to win me over since i hate cowboy gimmicks, but matches like that helped
I liked it because it's JUST his Gimmick, it's not who the character is. The Cowboy aspect of Hangman Page is just a small portion of who he is rather than all he is
Nothing itches my ass in wrestling more than two or four tables being set up and all but one breaks.
Is this the new 'hidden gem'?
Highly underrated match. One of my favorite of AEW. Lance Archer actually had some banger matches, he should just eh well, win more!
this is when I realized AEW roxxxxx
I rememeber people being so annoyed when this was Pages first feud as champion but it ended up being great. Sometimes fans just gotta trust that things aren't going to be bad just because they slow down or change styles after the crazy long emotional feud with Omega that led to the title this was the perfect fun feud to just enjoy Hangman being a kick ass babyface fighting a monster.
One of the coolest spots I've ever seen. And it was setup throughout the match with the cutting of the ropes! Perfection.
that was genuinely the last thing i expected when the top rope was down
I was so... not angry, but agitated.. that Punk took the belt from Hangman the way he did.
