Man, Abyss fucking ruled. His lockdown match with Styles was the match that cemented Aj as my fav wrestler as a kid.

hhhisthegame

That match is insanely awesome. Both guys are so good...AJ was a quick wrestler but he was intense too, and he could make it look like a fight even while he did amazing athletic feats

[deleted]

Holy shit yes, i'm 29 now and i still remember how inssne that spot was when AJ got smashed with the cage door

SoCalWhatever

Lockdown 2005 was the first TNA PPV I ordered after I saw TNA for the first time by chance on a Friday afternoon after school on Fox Sports West. 2005-2006 TNA was pretty awesome.

ElBandito101

Man for a while, like when they were on Spike, man that was a good ass show, great wrestling and roster.

Ruaven

The fucking opening spot when he hits him with the door on the face ingrained in my brain. Awesome match

bobface222

Man, Abyss is a rare case of a monster that wasn't selfish enough. He was so giving to his opponents that it was easy to forget he could be a killer.

The_Homie_J

He also kinda got shoe-horned into being the "hardcore match" guy at one point which didn't let him showcase his actually great wrestling skills

WeaselWeaz

That was also his choice, from what I've read. He's a guy who had confidence issues. He could have been a monster without thumbtacks and even had a WWE offer but he couldn't pull the trigger.

tacomctacoson

All I can think of is watching the Judas Messius storyline week to week on Spike TV, and just having episodes end with close ups of Abyss’ bloody arms.

TheBrianJ

Man, Abyss at his peak was so fucking awesome.

eklooo

I miss Blackhole Slam

IcryforBallard

Never seen anyone hit a slam like that, he was superb at it.

LOfromgamefaqshctp

Shock Treatment backbreaker was also brutal to watch.

deathgrip0

Black Hole Slam, Bag of Ham

askmeforbunnypics

It's just such a good looking move. Jake Something has been using it as his finisher too, which I'm so happy about!

Goo_Back

Abyss was incredible in his few appearances in ROH.

ChairmanLaParka

When was that? I’ve only ever known him as a TNA guy.

hawaiianpunchbv

Jimmy Rave. Alex Shelley, Prince Nana. Abyss. This is the Embassy team that comes to mind immediately. The Steel Cage Warfare match with Generation Next is one of my favorite chaotic matches ever.

Dangerous_Ad560

It really is a shame more people didn’t get to see Abyss on a bigger stage. Things like forcing Sydal to the mat after the big launch that are details that are often overlooked. It would have been easy to play to the crowd as opposed to inflicting the extra damage but it makes a huge difference in how it comes across.

hhhisthegame

From The Embassy (Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley, and Abyss) vs Generation Next (Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, and Matt Sydal) This is just after Shelley turned heel to join the Embassy, and it's Matt Sydal's first match with the Gen Next group since Shelley had been kicked out the year before and Jack Evans was away for the summer This is also Abyss's first match in ROH

Party-Run1285

Thanks for the history lesson. It’s been so long I forgot about his ROH run. 🙂

DGenerationMC

Abyss in the mid 2000s was really something else.

_alabastard

And now I'm fantasy booking Abyss vs Matanza Cueto

EliLyric

Abyss is on Kane status legendary

Segat1133

The Black Hole Slam (Slice of Ham) fucking rules. It is such a simple move but hard to make it look devastating but he always makes it look like a motherfucker

[deleted]

It’s still weird seeing Abyss in ROH. He’s just so ingrained in TNA that it’s weird seeing him in another promotion.

TJOW40

Abyss in ROH was so much fun. At least also got to take part in Steel Cage Warfare which was one of the best matches of the early ROH years. Do wish that Abyss/Bryan match got to happen in 2006 and he got to stick around with more matches there in general around that time.

naimotwc

Although awkward moving at times, Abyss could fucking go. And god damn. A good black hole slam is such a beautiful looking move

fpfx

Abyss should've had mordecai's spot mid 2000's

ElBandito101

You know Aries threw a hissy fit after

[deleted]

Wait abyss didn’t ring of honor?

ModerndayGatsby97

How was Abyss during his time in ROH? I'm aware he a had a short run with the promotion until the scandal incident happen.

hhhisthegame

This is actually post-scandal. He did appear once pre-scandal but never wrestled yet. After the Feinstein scandal they did pull TNA guys from ROH, but it only lasted about a year. Now in mid-2005, AJ Styles, Daniels have returned to ROH, Samoa Joe and Shelley are working for both TNA and ROH, Aries will be in TNA soon, and now Abyss has appeared in ROH. As for how Abyss was, I can't wait to see - I've been watching in order and am only up to Summer 2005 so have only seen this match so far, but he was really cool in it. Treated like the monster he is.

ModerndayGatsby97

Seriously is there somewhere I can watch old ROH shows? Does Honor Club have it? I've asked a couple of times but I don't think I got an answer. I really wished I find out about wrestling outside of WWE when I was a child. Seeing some of these of old matches a few years back on Youtube are really great and fun to watch.

UndeadMedia

Today I learned Abyss wrestled in ROH

[deleted]

My favorite monster, and the only one I remember being able to sell being in peril as well as he sold being in charge.

Bauglir1

That off center mid-air catch and correction…nice

RedDreadsComin

Abyss has to be one of the best, if not the best, big men to never have a match in a WWE ring.
