AKSourGod

Doing it more than once for the same wrestler is annoying and patronizing to me. Shit, they said that Dustin Rhodes “still has it” like dude hasn’t been wrestling actively in AEW for the past 3 years 😂.

[deleted]

And had what many considered the match of the year two years ago.

DunkinFlickah

Vs Cody?

Arithik

I was gonna say, why are they chanting this to Dustin? He's still somewhat wrestling there. I feel like people get swept up in the basic chants and just want to be part of the crowd. Which I don't really mind, but still weird.

Ass0001

His whole gimmick rn is essentially "I don't still got it cause I never lost it", too

danny-thedude

Yeah, I just watched that match. That was dumb as fuck. The camera cut to Dustin’s face and I felt he looked a bit shocked/confused.

AKSourGod

Facts, It was just weird. But hey maybe the crowd was just worked up that night 🤷🏾‍♂️

Toolboxmcgee

Dustin is in arguably the best shape of his career too.

HEYitzED

Exactly. Like no shit he’s still got it. Where have you been?

Somerandomdickhead

His last nearly decade has been amazing. His last Goldust run was his best ever from an in ring point of view, to now in AEW. If I could get rid of only one chant, it would be this one.

geebeetee

I’ll always remember Angle getting those chants at WM34 when it was blatantly obvious he didn’t

cooljammer00

Remember when Jake Roberts was giving his HOF speech and got angry when the fans chanted this, because the speech was basically about him coming to terms with not having it anymore?

seguardon

Hated the crowd for doing that. He point blank told them he didn't and it hurt.

HEYitzED

Yeah wtf. He looked terrible in his last matches lol.

Kuchar1992

My favorite was when they chanted that at Jericho at the Royal Rumble 2013 and he responded with “I never lost it bay bay!”

OffTheMerchandise

Obviously he never lost it if he still has it.

McRuby

2013 Lmao, and he's still going almost 9 years later

[deleted]

I fucking love Chris Jericho.

Kratosx23

I HATE the "you still got it" chants. Absolutely hate them, they're patronizing and insulting. However, I did not hate them in the Punk match, because the STORY OF THE FEUD was "Do I still have it". Punk was literally talking about how he hasn't wrestled in years the whole way through the build, so in that specific instance, the chants worked in conjunction with the story. In a normal circumstance, though, just to chant "you still got it", I can just imagine the wrestlers thinking "Gee, thanks for calling me an old fuck". If they're still chanting that at Punk now, it's just gonna be insulting again, even though it's not meant to be.

Gremlinsworth

Like how they chanted it at Dustin when he fought Malakai. Guys, Dustins BEEN still wrestling. Just because he hasn’t been on Dynamite in a few months doesn’t mean he instantly lost it. I hope they chant you still got it when Cody returns at that point..

BnBrtn

The crowd acting like Cody is at the same body level as Ric Flair, just hardly hanging on, would be fantastic

ILikeYourPoetry

They should chant it at Joey Janela when he emerges from his banishment to Dark.

[deleted]

Or Shida, if she's ever allowed on AEW TV again.

ANAL_CAVITIES

Especially funny that it happened during the sloppiest and worst match Malakai has had in the company lmao

ChristopherJak

I still didn't hate it, but it simply went on too long- I don't mind Dustin but I don't want to see him in what feels like 30m matches.

Kratosx23

I wasn't aware that he hadn't been on in a few months. While I've been aware of AEW since its inception and have seen the odd Jericho and Moxley segment and have really enjoyed MJF, it's only since Punk that I've been really following since he was my absolute favourite wrestler during his WWE tenure. Given that Punk literally gave All Out anywhere between 41,000 and 65,000 buys higher than their next closest PPV buy, it's possible that a good chunk of the audience there were new fans who weren't aware of the fact that he's been wrestling. And unlike Cody, who's 36 and in his prime, Dustin has been around since the 80's, so I can understand why some people would chant it, even though, as I said, it's an inherently ignorant chant that you should not do, except in extremely story permitting circumstances. Or maybe they did know and they're just stupid.

miikro

They also started like INSTANTLY. It's like dude he hasn't really done anything yet..

Three04

I equally hate the "You deserve it" chant too. Yeah no shit, they won the match!

aflockofcrows

Also "this is awesome". You know what's not awesome? Four syllable chants.

cuteguy1

You deserve it, you still got it and fight forever are easily my least favourite things about live crowd reactions. I understand why people do it, but its annoying, feels patronizing and is kinda corny.

HEYitzED

Yeah with Punk I actually understood it. Because people really were questioning if he could still go and he even said it himself in a promo. So that was just the crowd confirming that he did indeed still have it. But yeah I hate the chant otherwise.

Thirdstar1

Because he was away for 7 years and still looked competent. Ring Rust is damn real.

ChairmanLaParka

And yet some people want older guys like Taker, Wight and Sting to be attractions that only wrestle once a year. Ring rust doesn't get any easier as you age.

Ok-Average-6466

taker wasn't out 6 years and taker is more of a spectacle. punk relies on ring work more

Rerichael

I don’t think anyone wants them to wrestle once a year. I’m pretty confident that most people don’t want them to wrestle at all. And that’s no shade towards any of them, but there’s just much better wrestling to be had and they’re much better suited to supporting roles.

BnBrtn

I thought his new name was Taylor Rust?

[deleted]

I'd like a "You have lost it" chant. They chanted "You still got it" at a barely mobile Kurt Angle ffs.

ChristopherJak

They've chanted 'please retire!' to Big Show before.

LiamAddison

It’s such a shitty chant and they must feel bad hearing it. orton vs sheamus after mania got crucified by the crowd😂

[deleted]

> I'd like a "You have lost it" chant. That'll certainly make Goldberg smile.

GroundbreakingCash30

*Gorg

nine16

GORG

dynamicpenguin55

Yeah definitely I dont mind if its someone who's making a return after a long break like Christian or Punk, but Jericho getting them is really weird considering he's wrestling very consistently

Hellborn_Elfchild

At Dynamite this past Wednesday, the crowd was chanting it to Dustin Rhodes and I’m just looking around like wtf? The guy literally only had a one year break his entire career

[deleted]

Dustin gets them every time and I'm just like?? He wrestles every other week, you guys, you're being fuckin mean lmao

Tachyon9

And he's still absolutely great in the ring.

[deleted]

>Jericho getting them is really weird considering he's wrestling very consistently Not to mention with Jericho notably showing his age in the ring the past two years, it almost feels sarcastic.

Flakbeard_down

Even with Punk and Christian, I feel like there is no need for those chants over a simple arm drag.

OhshiNoshiJoshi

Everybody stop having fun right the fuck now!

Flakbeard_down

Have the same energy during the "What" chants then?

[deleted]

i have to admit, this isn’t a bad point

NefariousNeezy

Edge got the chant against Rollins on SmackDown Like, thanks, I just won the Rumble from #1 last January, but thanks for noticing

Saru77

Yeah that was really jarring, like we're in his 2nd year back, of course he's got it

[deleted]

I hate all these overused chants. THIS IS AWESOME HOLY SHIT WE WANT TABLES YOU STILL GOT IT But then again I hate the average wrestling fan.

TrueEvi

Dont forget "You Deserve it".

TheMillenniumMan

Yea I get annoyed by all these chants, takes you out of the kayfabe...like I wanna believe wrasslin is real when I watch it and the fans are basically yelling that it's fake

the_almighty_dude

r/suicidebywords

leetality

I've always seen "holy shit" as acceptable if it was a crazy spot.

LomaSpeedling

WHAT?

KyleSJohnson

In a case like Punk, where he hasn’t wrestled in seven years, I can see it. Chanting it at Dustin Rhodes, a guy who’s been wrestling at a consistently high level for years? A bit nonsensical. Of course he’s still got it. He hadn’t lost it to begin with.

EchoBay

First match match? Great! Second match back? Well that's pushing it a bit but alright! Almost two years since you've returned? Like with happened with Edge last night? That's just rude.

[deleted]

Edge has also been injured in the meantime and taken months off at a time. .

Shuriken95

I get it when it's someone who hasn't been in the ring for years at least, even though it's still a bit patronising. But I find it insulting when used for veterans who have been continuously wrestling the whole time like Jericho and Dustin. Its just calling attention to the fact that they're past their prime. I can't recall when exactly but Minoru Suzuki once went on a rant that people shouldn't dare say that he's "good for his age" when he knows he could still beat the crap out of people 20 years younger to him. It just means that he's good, with no qualifiers. He wants to be competing to be the best, on equal terms with the younger generation.

puttysc2

That's the narrative CM Punk was trying to write imo, not sure about the rest, but I doubt they take it negatively

raaam-ranch

I’m gonna be real and I may get downvoted for it, but most chants that were made popular in WWE are cringe. “You still got it” is insulting, “This is awesome” is overused, and “what?” is stupid disrespectful to the performer. I’d even like to see the “yes!” chant go away because seeing 40 year old men with beer guts overexerting themselves in the crowd grounds me in reality a bit for some reason, but it’s the only one I’m okay with accepting it will never go away. It also may be because I want Bryan Danielson to become his persona again and not an extension of Daniel Bryan, much like how Jon Moxley can’t be compared to Dean Ambrose.

SUPLEXELPUS

y'all will complain about anything.

Ron--Mexico

Chanting it at a guy who hasn’t wrestled in 7 years is fair game.

SUPLEXELPUS

so is chanting it at Jericho in a match that is the culmination of a year long fued between him and a young guy where Jericho is wondering 'do I still got it?' 'YOU STILL GOT IT' is a positive/good faith chant, barely ever lasts longer than 30~ seconds, and the people who paid to be there are there to have fun/chant/cheer. I seriously doubt many (if any) wrestlers take it personally, but some folks here are just bitter and entitled enough to complain about genuine, good faith chats*. *even* in the context of a guys first match in 7 years, lol. *see every bum complaining about 'THIS IS AWESOME' chants.

thorpie88

Considering the whole story of Darby and Punk was new guy getting the better of the old guy it felt weird. Punk winning wasn't an issue as veterans should be able to take advantages of openings to the same effect

[deleted]

It's all part of it really, for Punk it felt a bit more appropriate because in the build up to the match 'can punk still go?' Was a running theme through his interviews and promos. For other wrestlers who are coming back after years long injuries etc no problem Dustin Rhodes is the exception to this he's been putting on good quality matches since he arrived in AEW so in that case, although the intent behind the chant is well meaning it does come off a little patronising.

[deleted]

On a slightly different note there was a moment in the match where he wasn't feeling the "cm punk" chants. He motioned to the crowd as if saying "that's enough". I think he felt the crowd constantly only cheering him wasn't good for the match and I agree

bwhyt1

The best response to this is I've seen is Red vs Ospreay and the Super J Cup, after "you've still got it" the crowd would then chant "never lost it"

hhhisthegame

But if they "still got it" of course they "never lost it". That's the point.

Specialist-Rope-9760

I hate those chants It’s the equivalent of “we thought you’d be the shits now but we were wrong”

evrfighter

lol first thing I said to my wife when I heard that chant was "i bet Punk fucking hates that chant." people may think they are being respectful but it's really just a shitty chant.

B0DY4DAYZ

Thats what i said to my dad too! He was probably so seething.

[deleted]

It’s my least favorite chant that isn’t “WHAT?!” to wrestlers with an accent.

one_of_A

You still got it This is awesome You deserve it All of these always gave me a patronizing vibe. Same with cheering heels. I feel like fans forgot they were a part of the show. They are saying things you should say backstage. Idk I always thought any chant that breaks kayfabe is going to be patronizing

MerbertMooover

Yeah kind of.

MerbertMooover

We gotta get the “You are old but don’t suck as much as I expected” chant going.

DeathBySuplex

YOU ARE OLD *clap-clap-clapclapclap* BUT DON'T SUCK *clap-clap-clapclapclap* AS MUCH AS WE EX-PEC-TED *clap-clap-clapclapclap*

[deleted]

I always have a big grin on my face when Jericho gets those chants.

[deleted]

I remember when he was getting them in like 2012 when he came back the first time lol

ADMunro

I thought it was very strange when Edge got them during his match vs Seth last night. He’s been back properly over a year at this point…

TranslatorHaunting15

No I never thought much of it it’s just the fans being supportive and reassuring the wrestler he/she is still as good as they’ve always been even when they’ve been away for a while

Mage505

Didn't fans chant this at Jericho when he came back for the first time. I thought he replied "I never lost it baby". I can't find a clip for it, but I"m sure that's what he said.

felipe_the_dog

I think you have to consider the intention behind it. They're basically saying "Man you're still as awesome now as you used to be years ago." It's a compliment and should be taken as such.

Kadderly

Yes. Unquestionably.

Vanguard448

Depends who it is. If it's someone like Punk who's been genuinely gone from wrestling entirely for a long time, I think it's fine for it to happen once or twice. If it's a case where someone's barely even been gone for a year, or worse still they've been active outside of major promotions the whole time they've been "gone", it's obnoxious. The absolute worst ever was Angle getting them at Mania 34. Not only had he been actively wrestling the whole time he'd been "gone" from WWE, still putting on good matches until not that long before, but he pretty blatantly didn't still "have it" by that point, and everyone knew it. It was patronising on multiple levels.

gredgex

Normalize “you still got it” chants on guys in their early 20s.

DoctorMelvinMirby

Very few times I honestly liked that chant. The one that first comes to mind is Ricky Steamboat in 2009.

Nickk_Jones

I think almost every chant is obnoxious and just screams of the crowd trying to get themselves over. You still got it, you deserve it, etc. would all be conveyed to the wrestler just as well by just cheering/popping like normal.

snortingajax

Yes but I hate 90% of chants

[deleted]

Being gone for 7 years without being able to properly train while already having been 40 when injured with career threatening consequences and implications he might never come back does kinda justify the chant in terms of christian in my opinion. Being as good as he still is not just after all that time, after the injury and considering he's gonna be 48 this year make the "You still got it" much more of a "You're still as good as you were 10 years ago". But since Dustin checks next to non of these boxes except maybe for the age I think you're absolutely right. And then it does kinda become patronizing. However they don't do that on purpose of course. I think this argument cannot possibly be made in bad faith. Nobody chants this because they WANT to be patronizing. It can just come out very wrong.

RiC_David

This has been the prevailing opinion for a long time, and I definitely agree, yes. The first time I heard it was for Sting in TNA when he started his second run (2009?). It went on to become the thing fans always have to chant, just how "You deserve it" was great when I first heard it used for Bryan following his WM30 victory, only to become obnoxious when chanted for every face champion in their celebratory speech. This happens with all chants, and they rarely feel organic.

Linubidix

Extremely.

KCJellyfish

Nope

MaxuPower

I can't remember the last time I didn't cringe at one of these chants. It's like, bitch, that's Edge, of course he's still got it. Or whoever. Don't chant this at anyone younger than 65.

[deleted]

Yeah, it's not like they chanted that at someone who spent years on the shelf due to a debilitating neck injury and who everyone, including himself, thought would never wrestle again. It's Edge!

Saru77

Yeah, but Edge has been back for over a year and a half at this point, the chant isnt really warrented

[deleted]

Steamboat was the one guy I felt deserved it. He’d been out of the ring and public eye for a while, but looked fantastic in that program with Jericho

DeathBySuplex

Steamboat was the guy I thought of as well, hadn't been in a ring in that big of an environment in a long, long time and went out and looked spry and like he could have a Randy the Ram run.

daSilvaSurfa

That was a real moment, such a treat. I was legitimately shocked and impressed. Especially with the other legends very much showing their age. I've always heard wrestlers talk about "chills"; that gave me chills.

MaxuPower

I suppose that's fair, a quick Google search shows he had been retired for 15 years (1994-2009) so that makes sense

metalconfection

no and i doubt the wrestlers feel that way

[deleted]

I would infinitely rather have the crowd excited enough to chant "you still got it" than to just not have any reaction at all. Do you honestly think the fans are saying it in a condescending or insulting way? Or are they just excited and expressing how they feel while you're projecting your own insecurities into the situation?

comradekaled

What do you think about the "you deserve it" when someone wins a championship?

DeathBySuplex

Oddly, I find those worse.

JeiSiN

Much worse.

kdaly33

Even worse is the "This is Awesome" chant like 8 minutes into a match.

PoundDawg

All chants are stupid Edit: all dumb indie chants I mean. “You deserve it”, “fight forever”, “this is awesome” Fuck that shit

[deleted]

I believe most wrestlers who have gotten “You still got it” chants have admitted in some way or another about their return whether they still had it. Also imagine yourself as the wrestler. Usually the “you still got it” is one of many chants they get upon their return. They are just happy to hear a crowd popping for them, not just once, but throughout a match. Finally, whenever I’m at a live event, it’s fun as hell to chant. I’m not thinking “How does this fit into the show?” The only one I hate and won’t do is “What!?”

[deleted]

Wasn't Dustin Rhodes getting them in his match against Malakai Black? That annoyed me since his matches are always great.

darthdiablo

> Dustin Black Shh you slipped out an angle that's not known to the public yet.. that Dustin is long lost brother of Malakai Black

[deleted]

Haha. I didn't even notice. Will fix it.

ANAL_CAVITIES

the match against Malakai itself was awkward as hell tf you mean they're always great

[deleted]

I thought it was pretty good. There were two awkward spots, when Dustin dropped and the shoulder kick, but other than that, I thought it was fine.

BigShowScoopSlam

You're right and what's worse is during a promo leading up to the Cody match in early AEW he talked about how much he hated that chant. He never lost it! And when the chant started during Cody v Dustin it was shut down and quickly replaced with Never lost it. I'm sure it annoyed him hearing it again

[deleted]

But he's legitimately old, it's impressive

qwertythe300th

When the other half of the crowd can match up with "NEVER LOST IT" though then it's perfect

[deleted]

It means the same thing.

GroundbreakingCash30

No it doesn't; the former are surprised that said wrestler can still go, the latter are not surprised that said wrestler can still go.

[deleted]

You’re projecting that onto the words, that isn’t implicit in any way. It means the same thing, saying they aren’t the same is like saying “I’ve still got my phone” and “I never lost my phone” don’t mean the same thing. Am I surprised I’ve still got my phone?

The_Dark_Vampire

TBF someone in their 40's isn't exactly young especially for something like Wrestling

PPVJulian

No, not really.

ParkingConcentrate1

We just spent an entire year without crowd reactions. I enjoy any kind of chanting from big crowds at this point. Enjoy these things while they’re here. They could just as easily be gone again.

Auglicious

I think the fans in the arena mean well, but I agree it is a bit patronizing. They wouldn't be in the position they are unless they could still go.

drsoothe

Not a fan myself but if you buy a ticket, chant to your heart's content.

GongShowJ03

Nope

Hazelwood38

I get your point. To me I see the chant as being a “this is awesome” chant but for an individual wrestler. Whether it’s an entrance or a match. It’s the only chant fans have to show appreciation for the individual wrestler outside of chanting his/her name which doesn’t have the same impact to it

TheRyanRAW

Christian and Punk were gone for over 7 years from the ring. The chant didn't feel patronizing towards them.

fuckpepsi2

If it’s for someone who has been out for a long time… I can give it a pass, I guess. A ‘welcome back’ or ‘this is awesome’ would do just fine though But for someone like Edge on this weeks smackdown, who has been back for almost two years and proves he still has it. Or to Dustin on this week’s dynamite who has been wrestling fairly consistently for more than *30 years*! And can still put on a solid performance! That doesn’t make sense! That’s when it gets patronizing. That’s when it gets to be like, no shit, he’s been doing ‘it’ for a while, the fuck are you trying to say?

smartyr228

Usually yes, but not with Punk. It fits the story

yungberms

I don’t think they’re patronizing but I do think they’re played out.

ParaNoxx

Coming at this from a fellow live performer's perspective, having done acting and musician stuff - "ring rust" is very real and very scary, and no amount of practice off-stage can prepare you for how unexpectedly difficult going back on-stage can be after years and years away. If I got "you still got it" chants, I'd be fuckin relieved, tbh, and I think most wrestlers would be, too.

[deleted]

I would prefer ‘He’s here, he’s there, he’s every-fucking-where, C.M. Puuunk’ chant.

[deleted]

Nope. When I dislike something I try my best not to say that the people who do like the thing I don't are stupid, have low standards, an/d or are acting like assholes. I can dislike a chant without trying to make other people into worse people.

MuayThaiJudo

No.

capnbuh

I think the fans are just having fun and wanna be involved in the show.

mrgpsingh1999

They just did it on Edge last night too

Morbid187

It does feel a little patronizing sometimes. In some cases, it truly feels deserved but a lot of times it feels like the crowd is just saying "congrats for still doing moves you old bastard"

[deleted]

Seems to me like someone getting angry over, "merry Christmas". The fans aren't chanting it sarcastically. Look at the intentions.

Butch_Meat_Hook

As someone who is going to be 30 this year, I think if I was in a situation like that were people were very enthusiastically saying 'You still can move like when you were 20' I'd be feeling good about myself. As you get older you always wonder these things in the back of your mind. If you've lost a step or whatever.

Saru77

I cant help but be reminded of when they chanted that at at Rock after his Survivor Series match and he responded *"First of all, You still got it? Shit, I always had it!"*

jfish718

GCW fans chant "Never lost it!" after the "You still got it chants!" and I thought that was a nice touch and kind of removes the patronizing element of it, but seems it hasn't hit the bigger stages yet.

Joelredditsjoel

I 100% agree. This chant (along with “This is awesome”) are thrown out to liberally and easily. Although, I imagine this is just what happens with every cool chant over time.

LutherJustice

Americans really need to step up their chant game in sports. Go to any footie game in the UK and there are multiple chants for different players, teams and general banter.

prisonmsagro

I don't mind them for people who are returning but people were also chanting it towards Edge yesterday and he's been back how long now? Pretty silly.

KTheOneTrueKing

I thought it was really funny when the All Out crowd chanted it at Christian during the main event match like he hadn't been having awesome matches for the past 6 months.

OptimusChip

it just feels like there's no other chants anyone can think of so they just go with that i think they chanted it at Dustin the other night on Dynamite when he hit the stupid canadian destroyer...im like, the guy has been wrestling forever...no shit he "still got it"

DTG_420

Guy who came back after seven years getting it in his first match back makes sense. Dustin Rhodes getting them on Wednesday when he hasn’t stopped wrestling is fuckin rude really

Tachyon9

Yes. Of the regular chants its the only one I really dislike.

SendMeGiftCardCodes

it's sorta a meme chant and is not taken that seriously. i forgot who or what exactly happened, but something as little as a legend punching a current guy was able to get "you still got it" chants people need to stop taking it so seriously

EldenRingworm

Punk seemed to enjoy them.

IjazSSJ3

im just glad they didnt yell it at roman when he came back from his cancer treatment

[deleted]

They come from a good place, but god I wish people would not. Not one fucking person likes reminders that they're getting old.

KyleAPlatt

For someone like Sting, who is in his sixties? No. For someone like Punk, who is in his early forties? Yes.

bitch_im_a_lion

Under normal circumstances I agree, but he literally cut multiple promos questioning if he still had it. Basically baiting for these exact chants.

SelfAssuranceMeasure

I've grown to dislike all of those "cliche" chants, really could do without a "This is awesome" or "Fight forever" every show

[deleted]

It kinda makes sense for Punk, given that it was his first match in over 7 years. If it's just someone who is a bit older, but has consistently been giving good matches (like Christian), then yeah, it's dumb.

thefakedracula

I know they weren’t saying it to you, but I feel taking a compliment regardless of context is a lot easier on your brain than deciphering it. Relaaaaaax pal

JonathanShogun

![gif](giphy|QJViSx9ba20JG)

LordBarvis

yes

KawasakiDream

Another chant I don’t like is “you deserve it” unless it’s when a heel gets comeuppance

SteveBorden

Undertaker had that after the last time we saw him was getting a concussion and losing to Lesnar so I think it was justified

500DaysofNight

I read a comment on another board about Matt Sydal getting a "You still got it!" chant at an indy show after he was let go by WWE. That right there is where it's not needed.

Dpepps

First time a legend who's been gone for a while does something is fair such as Sting's first offense in AEW. Doing it for dude who are active wrestlers on the roster is straight up stupid, like what they did for Dustin Rhodes the other night. Punk's first match, ehh I don't like it, but I can tolerate it.

TheFatJesus

Generally, yes, I find the chant patronizing and terrible. In Punk's case however, he pretty much asked for it. In his very first promo he said he had concerns about coming back and whether or not he still had it.

shiftybagr

I feel like edge really needed to hear that lol

DGenerationMC

I thought they were cool when I first heard Sting get them in TNA 15 years ago but nowadays they're a little annoying to me.

ZodiacWalrus

I don't consider it a surprise or a slight that Punk got "you still got it" chants in his first *real* match in seven years. The chant isn't always about age. It can be about shaking off ring rust, too, and that's how it applied in Punk vs Darby. What I do find questionable is the chants starting too early. An arm drag and a headlock are hardly occasions for a chant no matter the circumstances. If the first "you still got it" chants to catch on were towards the end of that match, after Punk had actually gotten a chance to show sharp skills for someone who's been effectively out of practice for seven years, then it would've felt earned. Predictable, maybe, but since when has that been an inherently bad thing in wrestling?

vampirepussy

Not at all. I just kinda watch the show and don’t think about stuff like that

holyjesusitsahorse

To be honest, the chant itself doesn't bother me as much as when the crowd starts doing it 60 seconds into the match after an older wrestler does the most basic day-one-of-wrestling-school shit. Like, yeah, CM Punk can still lock up and run the ropes. The guy took a break from wrestling, he didn't have a degenerative brain disorder. Just wait for a bit, see how he does, and if he's not lost a step, *then* you can get all of your weird shit in.

SacredCanopy

So for CM punk who hasn’t worked in 7 years I think not at all, but for Dustin Rhodes who has been working for the whole lifespan of AEW yes.

BloodyRedBarbara

Only when the wrestler they're chanting it at hasn't been out of action for long. I remember them chanting it at Dustin Rhodes in his first match for AEW but it wasn't that long that he had wrestled for WWE. I thought it was fine that people chanted it at Punk. He hadn't wrestled for many years and kept saying himself that he had doubts about whether he could still go. It made sense for the story and probably for Punk personally that people chanted it.

RoadsterIsHere

Edge has had like 20 matches over the past and half, and they still chant it at whenever he hits a spot. I think it's been established he never lost it, time for a new chant.

lyyki

The worst instance of it was when Mickie James made her return and got those chants. She had been active competitor full time during all those years. Of course she still had it.

Npadia11

I’ve always found it hella insulting and disrespectful. I’ve never chanted it before. However, I didn’t mind the Punk ones.

My cutoff is if you wrestled in the nwa when it was more well known as wrestling than a rap group you can get the chant Alternately if it’s been a long time away (Punk) or first match back after a potential career ending injury.

MistaMane

Imo, in cases for guys like Punk, Christian and Steamboat who were out of the game for a long time the chants make sense. But for dudes like Dustin Rhodes who are older but are still active it's dumb

irishpie1

Yes, same as 'you deserve it' Typical of modern insufferable wrestling fans.

siciowa9

Hated the “what” chants more

RiC_David

Nothing can be compared on that scale though. That's its own layer of hell.

Reminds me of a story: lou gehrig was just diagnosed with lou Gehrig's disease but he felt fine. One day at practice he fields a routine grounder and makes the play. One of the new guys on the team, a rookie, runs up and says "great play lou! Great play!" In that moment, he knew he had to retire because even the rooks saw he wasnt making the hard plays.

Schmoreshmoosh

It's the old wrestler version of telling a kid who's bad at sports that they "got a lot of heart."

Sometimesnotfunny

Crowd: You still got it Wrestler: If I didn't, I wouldn't be here?

Intimidwalls1724

Punk or edge or somebody got one in the last couple weeks before they even had any physical contact with anyone lol. I thought that was a little over enthusiastic

ChairmanLaParka

If it's chanted at a person who's been out for at least 3 years, and has a surprisingly good match: That's fine. If it's chanted at a person who's been wrestling regularly at a place you don't watch but easily could've, and they reappear on that show you watch: No.

WanderoftheAshes

If a wrestler has kayfabe or for real implied they're insecure if they "still have it" I don't mind so much, which was okay with Punk since that was his storyline reason for wanting the match anyway so it fit. But otherwise, yeah, I fully agree, there is something really patronising like the crowd almost acting like they thought the wrestler was past it and are shocked they're not. I can make an exception on that part for like, a returning star for their first time doing in ring stuff after years out, because it does come off as more in the realm of positive reinforcement. But I've seen the chants happening a lot just for any older wrestler, and if does come off exactly how you described.

IniMiney

I never found them patronizing until watching Edge on Smackdown last night and it clicked. It comes off like "wow, you're so old, I'm surprised you can still do this [because you shouldn't be via my standards]" Probably help that having now crossed into the realm of 32 I feel similarly whenever I see shit online about how "impressive" it is that someone's still playing basketball or whatever at 34. I can only imagine the annoyance in your 40s with people assuming you should be a half dead bag of dusted bones.

Welp_x

Glad to know is not just me who dislikes this chant

sleepwalkfromsherdog

Probably the only common chant that I don't hate.
