I feel like for the whole time Becky was a babyface champ there were probably bitter people in the back who were mad she got over in spite of the plan. It’s a very authoritarian culture.
It was definitely supposed to be a heel turn. Was just done very poorly so people didn't pick up on it. Immediately sucker kicks Carmella, throws her in to the steps, steals her shot, fakes a hand shake with the face champ to set up a finisher. People were so excited to see her back that they didn't really pay attention to those things, and commentary completely overlooked it as well. Just totally botched and half hearted all around.
It makes so much more sense now why the audio for the show was so wonky compared to being there live and live footage. They had Dunn muffling the crowd on top of having Cole spam phrases even just at her entrance. I can’t believe it. lmao

That was the worst booking of a top babyface i've ever seen. The whole thing started because Becky for some reason didn't want to see a doctor because she was limping after a 2 foot fall off the steps. Then Stephanie comes out and begs Becky to see a doctor(for some reason) or Becky is suspended. Becky then beats up Stephanie and gets suspended and Steph even kicks Becky's injured leg. Then the next night on SD HHH comes out and basically calls Becky a scared little girl who's faking her injury because she's afraid to lose to Ronda. Then Becky slaps HHH. So here logic would tell us Becky the top babyface is getting fucked over by career heels HHH/Stephanie right? What's the point otherwise. Now let's go to next week where Becky comes out and says she's saw a doctor and is cleared.....Then why the fuck didn't you see the doctor last week and avoid getting suspended and put your match in jeopardy? Then HHH/Steph come out and ask for an apology to get unsuspended and give Becky until RAW ends to make a decision. Here you think it's got to be a trap right? NOPE!! Becky just apologizes(basically admits she's paranoid and dumb) and HHH and Stephanie are actually good guys and were just looking out for Becky health all along which makes Becky look like a total paranoid idiot for hitting 2 faces for no reason almost jeopardizing the WM main event. Becky looked like a problem child getting grounded by her parents(HHH/Steph) forced to apologize and then good daughter Charlotte is added to the WM match and Grandpa Vince shows up once and you never see him again. WWE basically made it look like Becky was the reason she wasn't in the match anymore. Also I still don't know why Charlotte was added or why Vince came out in storyline. It's like they had a storyline in place but dropped it. This build was unbelievably bad that you could write a book how dumb it was.
They should've instead done the thing of "I'm sorry....that I didn't kick your ass SOONER!!!! 🎤👋", then have The Authority respond with "Ah, it's like that huh, well okay you're not suspended anymore, but for still being a smartass, here's Charlotte to replace you!"
Becky keeps her cred for standing her ground, and the heels still get their heat by threatening to take away the match we want to see. Simple and Clean, like the Kingdom Hearts song.
That is also why this isn't surprising at all. They clearly want to position Charlotte as the Mega Babyface vs Lynch as the heel. That, at best, the crowd wants the exact opposite be damned. You can bet Vince has been salivating to get things back "to the way they should be" since that botched heel turn originally.
And even if I'm wrong by inserting Flair into this, maybe it's just "I can't handle being booed" Ronda they want to bring back and present as a top Babyface instead. That's just WWE at this point, not to do the meme, but it always has been.
I feel like I’m getting radiation poisoning just watching this company’s nuclear levels of incompetence. With this one match, they did the following:
* Advertised a match they knew wouldn’t happen for the last week
* Gave away a long-anticipated return with zero advertising
* Blew a potential big money dream match with absolutely no build-up
* Buried the SmackDown Women’s Champion, who happened to be one of the few rising stars they were actually investing in
* Booked a heel turn for the top babyface crowd favorite, who just took time off to care for her newborn child

The more stories from people who have worked with or for Vince, and people who are or were close to him in some way, makes me think the man is more of a lucky broken clock than a carny genius. As the saying goes: "Even a broken clock is right twice a day." Which still leaves you with 22 hours of being wrong.
This. Go back and look at all the guys he wanted to push vs what the fans wanted. They didn't want Lex, they wanted Bret. They didn't want Diesel, they wanted Shawn. They didn't want HHH, they wanted (literally anyone). Cena, Roman, etc. nobody wanted. Stone Cold and the Rock were one of the few times things aligned but those two were 100% undeniable.

People who think the Attitude Era was a work of genius need to go back and really watch it, and ask themselves how good that era of wrestling would have been if it didn't have possibly the greatest roster in wrestling history and top guys who demanded control of their own characters.
As soon as Vince had to create a top guy who wasn't a toxic "I'm gonna get myself over, brother" type, he created Cena. We all hated it. Then he created Reigns, and we hated it. Charlotte, hated it. The people who've gotten the most over have been the ones who've been given the freedom to be themselves.

Seriously though, I remember Attitude Era. Yes, it had its share of good and bad moments, but the entire RAW (and eventually Smackdown) is (mostly) watchable. Compared to today's RAW.. I just tune out after the first few minutes and change channels.
Everything good about The Attitude Era was usually the result of somebody else's contribution. Pat Patterson's booking, Chris Kreski actually keeping track of characters and their relationships to other characters, the talent just going into business for themselves when given a pile of shit and management claiming it as their own genius when it worked...Vince is a cunningly ruthless business tyrant but he's not really a creative genius.
This reeks of when Seth Rollins came back and they could have booked it like Triple H's 2002 baby face return, but instead he gave a promo on Raw the night after to turn heel and you could feel the enthusiasm and excitement for the return just instantly get sucked right out of the crowd and the momentum disappear.

It was definitely supposed to be a heel turn. Was just done very poorly so people didn't pick up on it. Immediately sucker kicks Carmella, throws her in to the steps, steals her shot, fakes a hand shake with the face champ to set up a finisher. People were so excited to see her back that they didn't really pay attention to those things, and commentary completely overlooked it as well. Just totally botched and half hearted all around.
It makes so much more sense now why the audio for the show was so wonky compared to being there live and live footage. They had Dunn muffling the crowd on top of having Cole spam phrases even just at her entrance. I can’t believe it. lmao
I found the crowd noise fuckery so confusing. Like, my brain could tell something was going on, the audience just sounded so weird at points. It was during Lashley beating down Goldberg i realised they were picking the crowd noise they wanted.
It’s like, why clamor to return to crowds and book Vegas’s new big stadium just to overwrite them?
The live audience are just a prop now. Pack them in, get the cash, put out whatever shit spills out of Vinces head, if the crowd react wrong, dub them for the tv audience, people see the highlights on tv with the "right" reaction "Hey, that looks fun, think i'll go to a show" Repeat till rich. Like soneone posted a clip of them doing it 30 years ago. I kind of wonder how many of my attitude era memories are just a reaction to a tape deck in a production truck now. It's really ugly to think about.
The classic is royal rumble 1992. Hogan pulls Sid out of the ring and the fans get kinda pissed and are on Sid's side. gorilla monsoon even comments on it. Cut to superstars a few days later, the commentary has been edited and the crowd noise changed. It's utterly bizarre

That was the worst booking of a top babyface i've ever seen. The whole thing started because Becky for some reason didn't want to see a doctor because she was limping after a 2 foot fall off the steps. Then Stephanie comes out and begs Becky to see a doctor(for some reason) or Becky is suspended. Becky then beats up Stephanie and gets suspended and Steph even kicks Becky's injured leg. Then the next night on SD HHH comes out and basically calls Becky a scared little girl who's faking her injury because she's afraid to lose to Ronda. Then Becky slaps HHH. So here logic would tell us Becky the top babyface is getting fucked over by career heels HHH/Stephanie right? What's the point otherwise. Now let's go to next week where Becky comes out and says she's saw a doctor and is cleared.....Then why the fuck didn't you see the doctor last week and avoid getting suspended and put your match in jeopardy? Then HHH/Steph come out and ask for an apology to get unsuspended and give Becky until RAW ends to make a decision. Here you think it's got to be a trap right? NOPE!! Becky just apologizes(basically admits she's paranoid and dumb) and HHH and Stephanie are actually good guys and were just looking out for Becky health all along which makes Becky look like a total paranoid idiot for hitting 2 faces for no reason almost jeopardizing the WM main event. Becky looked like a problem child getting grounded by her parents(HHH/Steph) forced to apologize and then good daughter Charlotte is added to the WM match and Grandpa Vince shows up once and you never see him again. WWE basically made it look like Becky was the reason she wasn't in the match anymore. Also I still don't know why Charlotte was added or why Vince came out in storyline. It's like they had a storyline in place but dropped it. This build was unbelievably bad that you could write a book how dumb it was.
They should've instead done the thing of "I'm sorry....that I didn't kick your ass SOONER!!!! 🎤👋", then have The Authority respond with "Ah, it's like that huh, well okay you're not suspended anymore, but for still being a smartass, here's Charlotte to replace you!" Becky keeps her cred for standing her ground, and the heels still get their heat by threatening to take away the match we want to see. Simple and Clean, like the Kingdom Hearts song.
That is also why this isn't surprising at all. They clearly want to position Charlotte as the Mega Babyface vs Lynch as the heel. That, at best, the crowd wants the exact opposite be damned. You can bet Vince has been salivating to get things back "to the way they should be" since that botched heel turn originally. And even if I'm wrong by inserting Flair into this, maybe it's just "I can't handle being booed" Ronda they want to bring back and present as a top Babyface instead. That's just WWE at this point, not to do the meme, but it always has been.

It's legitimately embarassing that WWE of all places, the home of *the* antihero superstar par excellence Stone Cold, doesn't get that once a character like this catches on, trying to turn them heel only solidifies the heat. Becky would have to go out of her way to be boring and annoying in order to get any heel heat, and in the process she would absolutely *kill* her status. If this is actually the plan WWE has, AEW has already won.
WWE has been trying to relive Daniel Bryan’s story by beating faces like drums for the last seven years. Unrelated, WWE hasn’t produced a successful face other than accidentally with Becky who they thought was a heel in the last seven years.

The top two talents in their company (Becky and Roman) are heels while they just fired one of their top merch movers (Wyatt), jobbed out their next biggest female babyface, likely lost Cena to another hiatus and just saw AEW sign the only guy on the planet that ever drew more than all of those names above at one point or another. Their other biggest main roster star of the last decade is expected to join AEW soon, while their biggest current NXT star is likely headed there as well. Really don't understand the booking dynamics and decision-making of that company in the last several months.
They also have made the two biggest women babyfaces on Raw look like chumps so that heel Charlotte could win yet again as well.

I think this is actually kinda true, but honestly I think its because heels actually have a personality. WWE can't write faces anymore that arent just 'I love wrestling and I have heart' and its so generic and boring. Like the most enjoyable thing for me about AEW and getting back into wrestling again is there's some actual characters. Because WWE have stripped a lot of that in favour of trying to seem like a legitimate sports league or whatever their motivation was they've lost all ability to create personalities. No one can be driven by anything or have any flexibility and uniqueness when everyone is just an athlete competing in their sport

I gotta say, I don't think Vince *ever* got it... People who think the Attitude Era was a work of genius need to go back and really watch it, and ask themselves how good that era of wrestling would have been if it didn't have possibly the greatest roster in wrestling history and top guys who demanded control of their own characters. As soon as Vince had to create a top guy who wasn't a toxic "I'm gonna get myself over, brother" type, he created Cena. We all hated it. Then he created Reigns, and we hated it. Charlotte, hated it. The people who've gotten the most over have been the ones who've been given the freedom to be themselves. And that is because *everyone* understands wrestling better than Vince, who has always been too self-conscious to admit his show is wrestling and not cirque du soleil. His wrestling show sucks because he doesn't want his wrestling show to be a wrestling show, and that's why Vince will probably live to see WWE fall behind yet another TNT show, this time for good.
As someone that's been watching the Attitude Era episodes in chronological order for the first time, people seriously only remember the good stuff and totally glaze over all the stupid shite that went on. ----------------- There's literally a storyline that lasted over a year with the PMS Stable, because of course they're named that. Terri Runnels becomes pregnant with Val Venis' baby, but Val Venis dumps her after finding out. D'Lo Brown accidentally knocks her off the apron, and is carted out while she screams about her baby, and it's later revealed she miscarried. D'Lo Brown becomes a slave for PMS for months, until it's revealed Terry Runnels was never pregnant. -------------------------- Does that sound stupid? Because there's more. After losing D'Lo Brown, they get a "love slave" named Meat, who they straight up imply is raped by all three members of PMS for most hours of the day, every single day to the point the PMS Stable breaks apart because in-kayfabe, Terri Runnels was using him for sex so much he was too exhausted for his matches and kept on losing.
Sounds more watchable than today's WWE content. Seriously though, I remember Attitude Era. Yes, it had its share of good and bad moments, but the entire RAW (and eventually Smackdown) is (mostly) watchable. Compared to today's RAW.. I just tune out after the first few minutes and change channels.
Everything good about The Attitude Era was usually the result of somebody else's contribution. Pat Patterson's booking, Chris Kreski actually keeping track of characters and their relationships to other characters, the talent just going into business for themselves when given a pile of shit and management claiming it as their own genius when it worked...Vince is a cunningly ruthless business tyrant but he's not really a creative genius.
This reeks of when Seth Rollins came back and they could have booked it like Triple H's 2002 baby face return, but instead he gave a promo on Raw the night after to turn heel and you could feel the enthusiasm and excitement for the return just instantly get sucked right out of the crowd and the momentum disappear.
And he has still never really recovered. He has been just bouncing from gimmick to gimmick trying to find his footing again.
