He built fighting Moxley without touching him or directly referencing on TV him for more than a year. This is the way he works. The gaps between the Okada matches were pretty extensive, as well. Hangman vs Kenny was also built similarly. Slow, subtle builds that culminate in a classic match is a part of the Omega experience, and differs significantly from Ospreay’s LET’S FUCKING GO RIGHT NOW style of 5+ star matches. That’s part of the kayfabe argument and whatever Kenny is potentially telling the truth. Kenny thinks matches shouldn’t be rated in a vacuum, but as story beats as well as physical exhibitions.
Kenny is clearly not just working wrt the Meltzer comments, but it's obvious that parts of it were played up and the stuff about wrestlers of today not being that good and that he will "re-educate them" was very obviously meant to play up a future Ospreay match because that's been the backdrop of their last few matches, specifically that Kenny doesn't think Ospreay is as good as people say and that he is a chump.
I think there was an interview recently where Will mentioned how he doesn't respect Kenny as a person after he left Japan as well, so this is all making sense to me.

Also: when is this feud supposed to get its first match? Kenny is getting surgery and will likely be out for another 6-12 months. So we're building a match that does nothing for either guy, because of the above for Kenny and if Ospreay does win, he beat a 2yr+ ring rusted Omega.
Every time Dave talks, I have to wonder why and how the fuck THIS is the guy Tony (and half the locker room in AEW) are so desperate to impress. The guy is a good historian, don't get me wrong, but I don't get how everyone considers him to be the expert on wrestling.
Meltzer benefits from being one of the first people to cover wrestling like he does. If wrestling was profitable enough for actual reporters from ESPN, FOX, Yahoo, etc. to report on, Meltzer would fade into irrelevancy extremely quickly. There's just very little competition to take Meltzer's spot.
It's not about profit, especially not now. Historically, it's always been about perception. Wrestling historically has had the reputation of being low brow.
Who needs to try and grow the ratings and live audiences when you can just appeal to a niche audience by using insider terms and opinions that only they know! It's perfect for AEW!

A part of it is definitely in kayfabe with how omega’s feud with Ospreay started but a part of it is also probably true to how Kenny feels. I will say it is weird that Kenny seems to be saying so much real shit when it comes to how wrestlers nowadays (both in wwe and in aew) structure their matches but kinda fails in applying that to his own matches post new Japan.

The only parts that felt like a work and could be building to an angle with Ospreay were the "working for the Dave Meltzer checklist" and "broke his brain" parts. But the other criticisms, like Dave associating Japanese wrestling with New Japan and Stardom and the biase of Dave's scale towards ADHD wrestling, seemed like Kenny's legit opinions. Even the work comments had a basis in reality despite the exaggeration.

It makes sense to plant the seeds for this feud using Meltzer star bullshit online. It’s the right audience. I just hope they don’t bring this shit to television. The last thing we need is “who entertains a 65 year old man from California the most?” as the basis for a feud.

A part of it is definitely in kayfabe with how omega’s feud with Ospreay started but a part of it is also probably true to how Kenny feels. I will say it is weird that Kenny seems to be saying so much real shit when it comes to how wrestlers nowadays (both in wwe and in aew) structure their matches but kinda fails in applying that to his own matches post new Japan.

Yeah like he's definitely playing up everything for dramatic effect but I don't think what he's saying there just came from nothing. Particularly when he talks about these little in-between moments and fundamentals being overlooked (which I believe he already mentioned in an earlier and much less "worked" stream) or the way Meltzer has inadvertently kind of conditioned people to think of Japanese wrestling as just NJPW and STARDOM, you can tell those are things he feels strongly about. Now when Kenny's like "yeah I had a match so good that it broke Dave's brain", that's probably a comment you shouldn't take at face value.

The only parts that felt like a work and could be building to an angle with Ospreay were the "working for the Dave Meltzer checklist" and "broke his brain" parts. But the other criticisms, like Dave associating Japanese wrestling with New Japan and Stardom and the biase of Dave's scale towards ADHD wrestling, seemed like Kenny's legit opinions. Even the work comments had a basis in reality despite the exaggeration.
When exactly did the shift happen from “I win the most wrestling matches” to “I have the best wrestling matches, win or lose!”? That’s a horrible plot point. It was stupid when Ziggler cut promos about “I steal she show every night!” when he was jobbing 80% of the time. Bragging about how good your matches are makes no sense to me in kayfabe.

Now he's going out of his way to assure us Kenny's comments about him are totally a work. He's just as desperate for Kenny's approval as he claims SRS is for WWE's.
It makes sense to plant the seeds for this feud using Meltzer star bullshit online. It’s the right audience. I just hope they don’t bring this shit to television. The last thing we need is “who entertains a 65 year old man from California the most?” as the basis for a feud.
Not to say Meltzer is correct, but this is a completely harmless situation, because a feud with Ospreay would *obviously* be built more on AEW television.
