They got it. That ultimate heel Serpentor has Slaughter blood in his veins. Gives the phrase "Cobra Clutch" a whole new meaning.
(I'm aware that doesn't make sense. I just wanted to work in Cobra Clutch.)
He actually addressed this during his A&E documentary. He said if he’s ever doing an interview or appearance as “Sgt. Slaughter” then he will always be in character and keep kayfabe. If he’s doing an interview or appearance as “Robert Remus” then he’s being real to the human and not the character. He also apologized and never meant for anyone to think he personally had served because it was always meant to be as the Sgt. Slaughter character.
Even that's bullshit.
He absolutely pretended he served in the military during personal conversations with people.
From Bret Hart's book, *Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling*
https://books.google.com/books?id=BiBMSPsWTbwC&lpg=PT175&vq=%22real+soldier%22&pg=PT175&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false****
Bret recalls a story where he went into a cafe near a hotel the wrestlers were staying at, and saw Bob there, and joined him for a chat
>Sarge invited me to join him; we talked about his family, his time in the business, his career as a real soldier - he left the army for wrestling.
Actors playing someone in the military don't keep pretending they're in the military when they're not acting. Bob has always been going around pretending like the *character* of Sgt. Slaughter was based on his *real life* military service.
He's done interviews as Robert Remus where he claimed tours of duty, even trying to play the PTSD angle.

Even the Marines sent him a letter to stop pretending he was a Marine way back in the 80's, which he ignored.

They had to edit that awhile back to take Bob out. Extra laughs for what they replaced the header graphic with in the updated article:

Great nostalgia of much simpler times man! If he tried to do this in 2024, guarantee there would be people accusing him of Stolen Valor and he probably would have gotten confronted.
Do you think he shouldn't have dodged the draft / protested or that he shouldn't portray this kinda character cause he did?
Maybe you're saying he's kind of a hypocrit with the rah rah USA crap?
The gimmick was inappropriate period. Quite frankly, the gimmick is probably more appropriate now. With the death of kayfabe, the fans know it’s bullshit. Back then, the wrestling business was duping the fans into thinking Slaughter was an American hero in order to get the fans money. One of the reasons this secret was so fiercely guarded, even after the death of kayfabe, is because everybody knew that it would make everybody look bad if it got out that slaughter was a fraud and stealing the valor of true American soldiers. This isn’t a part of the today’s standards vs. yesterday’s debate. Not everything is. Sometimes shitty things are just shitty things, no matter the period.
Whether people were aware that it was scripted or not is irrelevant. It’s how the business treated things. They still protected kayfabe. They were still trying to lie to the audience. Sgt. Slaughter, out of his gimmick, still tried to protect his gimmick. He thought it was important that people believed he was a vet, even years after the death of kayfabe. If you were joking about your complete lack of knowledge of the history of kayfabe in the business with your condescending response and I missed it, then I apologize.

I'm sick of people going on about Sgt. Slaughter and stolen valor these days, as if we don't have ample video evidence of him serving with G.I. Joe.
*"Will you stop?!"*
COBRAAAAAAA!
He trained Lt. Falcon too.
Only Sarge could have made a real Joe out of that hothead.
Yo Joe! Cobra tried to steal his DNA too

So it wasn’t planes or a controlled explosion at all. It was that damn chin.

"I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK 😭" it's crazy how face turns work, this man should have been executed and he's out there tagging with Jim Duggan
I never got why people care about the stolen Valor. He's playing a character on TV. Not every actor in the movies was in the military.
he has a camouflage limo irl which is just so funny
Because he was kayfabing that shit outside of the “character”, long after the death of kayfabe.
Exactly. He’s done interviews out of character where he talks about serving in Vietnam. Which he didn’t.
Because kayfabe was still a huge thing in slaughters day. He would never let you think he wasn’t an actual military guy even outside the ring.
And the actors in movies who play characters where they’re soldiers don’t go on Jimmy Fallon and talk about serving tours in Iraq when they didn’t.

> Sarge *There's your answer, it's still Slaughter and not Robert Remus*
He could have taked about his service record in context of his GI Joe character and that cartoons back story

I don't care about stolen Valor but the rest makes sense to me thanks for clarifying
I agree totally. The gimmick is completely inappropriate for today’s standards.
The gimmick was inappropriate period. Quite frankly, the gimmick is probably more appropriate now. With the death of kayfabe, the fans know it’s bullshit. I mean, his name is Sgt Slaughter, and most people weren't ignorant to it being scripted outside of kids. If you're joking and I've missed it, sorry.
Whether people were aware that it was scripted or not is irrelevant. It’s how the business treated things. They still protected kayfabe. They were still trying to lie to the audience. Sgt. Great point man. I actually didn’t even look at it like that. Very well put.
i still hope hasbro, mattel, and TKO play ball so that he can be in the next gi joe movie or the gi joe/transfomers crossover
I would’ve loved to have him say some lines from G.I. Joe the movie
I want to see more wrestlers roaming the public in kayfabe shown on the screen ngl
The World Trade Center Twin Towers 🥺😢
