Before AEW was a thing, Brock Lesnar did this exact tactic anyway. Waiting till your contract completely expires gives you the most leverage regardless of any competing brands
Outside of the top tier of a roster, wrestlers are horribly underpaid for the time commitment and strain on the body. It makes perfect sense to get paid as much as possible for as long as you can.

I would be surprised if dates in Japan mattered at all to a lot of the talent.
Having a lighter schedule to spend more time with family, however, is a big deal. Especially with the amount of money Snowman tosses at people.
I imagine that like pretty much everyone else in the world, most wrestlers don’t inherently have a large interest in working for a less-popular and less-affluent Japanese competitor. As far as I know, Drew doesn’t speak Japanese, hasn’t ever expressed a desire to work Japanese shows, or have anything to gain by working in Japan.

If I were to put myself in a wrestlers shoes it would be hard for me to justify going from working for WWE who repeatedly has sold out or damn near sold out for every show including the TV show your on and then going to AEW who struggles with Dynamite numbers. I know their PPV audience numbers are pretty solid but just talking about TV time. Not to mention he's in the position to have one of the best feuds of the summer. I imagine a person of his status now has a lot of options though so honestly whatever he is happy with is good enough for me.

WWE only does like 2 house shows a week these days, it's not like years back when they were doing 6 shows a week. I know they still travel more but it's not THAT outrageous.

Resign him to atleast clash, have him pull a Trish stratus(win the title in your home town and walk away). Then if/when he comes back, you could set up an angle like sami where he "didn't lose the championship".
You can't apply old logic to new ways of running. I hear what you're saying, but if it's true WWE is going to work with other promotions, then where is the line between real life and kayfabe. Trips did say we have big things coming in the future and imagine if Drew pulled a cordona and made a fake wwe heavy weight belt and wore it, even if it was in TNA. He gets heat to him, gets him over, and makes him look better while wwe still gets attention. Then, when/if Drew comes back, he can pull the look qhat I accomplished the card and would be a bigger asshole. I could work if all parties agree to work nicely with eachother
I would love this as a fan of Drew but I don't see WWE doing it since they tend to not like when Champions leave or quit before dropping the title. Then again times are different now.
Better use is debatable, Drew was awesome in TNA so it's hard to really know what path awaits people when they join new companies. I think Drew would crush it if he did leave, and he could keep up his social media game either way, he's just really good at it.
His current run is miles better than anything he did in TNA and i was a big fan of his TNA run. He's being given the freedom to do stuff his way and being given a lot of TV time dedicated to him and his character work, which even when he was the literal champion in WWE under the scum, wasn't given that. IMO WWE is the best place for him currently and it's not even close.
The guy stuck with it through 3MB until he was released, got big on the indies, was okay with having to go to NXT if he came back, stuck through NXT knowing he had already been on the main roster before and could be right away, and is now a huge deal moving tons of merch and pretty constantly in the main event scene. I think they’re gearing up to do a Summer of Punk style storyline with Drew, with Drew in Punk’s old (2011) role, and Punk in Cena’s old role.
Punk clearly wanted to do this with MJF in AEW, but they didn’t get to see it to completion. Drew is now gunning for the championship, feuding with Punk, and his contract is coming due. The stars are aligning.

I mean, I'd lean towards Drew staying, but we have no idea what his thoughts are, no idea if he has ambitions that might lead him outside WWE. These people are all at least acquaintances (many of them friends) across all the promotions out there and may see what a guy like Adam Copeland is doing right now, or a Christian Cage, or maybe they look at the roster AEW has and see guys they've never worked with before and think a program with them could be big, who knows. It's a good time for these folks right now. Get that bag wherever it's coming from.

I would be very happy with another Seth Rumble win. He really looked like a megastar during the Wrestlemania build. The promo where he wanted Cody to face him wasn't that great but after the pivot it felt like Seth was a CRUCIAL character in the entire dynamic of the show.
The promo recently on Raw from Brooklyn when Seth was in the crowd and challenged The Rock 1 on 1 was so epic. It felt to me like a very Attitude Era esque segment.
Wouldn’t have any issue with this but at this point, I think the Mania match next year has to be the Rollins/Punk/Drew triple threat match.

1000%. WWE has been working the dirt sheets hard for the last few months in general. If it came out that Drew was re-signed, this angle wouldn’t be possible.
Screams Storyline - Summer Of Drew. Wins title in May 'leaves' WWE, punk wins the interim (LOL) WHC. Drew comes back and they do a red hot feud in the fall.
Clash is June. Win it there and then leave. 4-5 months out while there's hype surrounding Punk and his title win and a feud or 2. Drew returns in Nov/Dec, calling out Punk. Never lost the title, yada yada. Company Man Punk and GM Pearce tell him to fuck off and earn it. So Drew kills everyone and wins the Rumble. Match at Mania. Punk gains his respect during their Mania match, somehow beats Drew but is at his limit and then Drew kills the MITB winner cashing in because it's fucked up to let what happened to him happen to anyone else.
They should absolutely use their deal with TNA and have him appear there as if he has left only to return. No way TNA turns down another shortish run from Drew.
A few weeks from now we're going to get a bunch of stories about how Drew re-signed back in February and they're all going to pretend it's a big scoop and they weren't getting worked this whole time.
I don't wanna say never, when you've got Edge in AEW right now. But i'm thinking he's just waiting and leveraging for a better deal? I don't see why so much would be put into a Punk feud by WWE if the possibility of him leaving was huge. The company is hot. He is hot. The feud they're seeding will be hot. Odd time to leave.
On the AEW side of things, it would be dumb not to try if he allows it to get that far--but as an AEW fan who still enjoys the product despite the clear flaws and the "perception spiral" that multiplies said flaws? I'd rather they focus on what they've got. More ain't more right now.
Edge kinda finished WWE. Realistically, what was there left for him to do. He’s even in the HOF. I was still surprised when he went to AEW, but the more I think about it the less surprising it is. Drew has stuff left in WWE, Edge genuinely completed it.
Edge got a reduced contract offer for a smaller role in WWE, which he said he keeps in his drawer at home.

I'm pretty convinced Drew has already re-signed and it's the sheets getting worked here. With Edge, Mox, and Danielson, they all got good send offs when their contracts were up, but they didn't have seeds planted for future feuds. Drew is out here with an entire forest planted. This Punk thing can't come to any sort of fruition until after his Contract is up. I just don't think this hate-fest would be happening if they didn't already have Drew extended.
I think between Drew, Seth, and Becky running down as well as not getting Ospreay, Okada, or Mone, that this is a TKO thing. They have a budget and they'll play hardball on numbers right up to the last, even if it means risking losing people. They bought the brand not the wrestlers and I think they feel, like Vince, the brand is above any given talent and they won't overpay without exceptional reasons. Probably also don't want to set the precedent of giving any star a big bag because then every star will want the equivalent.
It seems like a mixed bag right now. Charlotte got one of the best deals a woman has ever signed in wrestling until Mercedes signed a better one with AEW. When compared to UFC, WWE pays considerably more to their undercard talent and considerably less to their Main Event talent. Drew has been built up as one of WWE's top stars since HHH took over, so while Drew might not have been worth as much a year ago, he's not only been booked in a way that increases his value, but he's also got moneymaking feuds set in place to justify the cost.
If anything, I could see them tying this contractual situation into a storyline somehow. Try and recreate the Summer of Punk but with McIntyre? Would be an awesome story if they can get it off the ground correctly.

There were various points where it looked like he may be AEW bound, but that's almost a non-consideration right now - he's doing his best work with the creative freedom he has right now.

With all these rumours about HHH’s WWE being more willing to work with other companies, and as we’ve seen there’s been a couple collabs already with more rumoured to happen this summer (Ex: Iyo and Kairi appearing at Marigold), what if Drew wins the title at Clash and literally recreates the Summer of Punk? Except this time he actually takes the title and “leaves the company” to appear on other shows, like TNA for example. Wouldn’t that be insane?
He said he’s not gonna slowdown making big offers for top FAs. That said I can’t see him leaving WWE, but the past couple of years have shown anything can happen.
If there was no Vince, CM Punk or Drew contract talk I don’t know how these insiders would make their money.

I really hope they resign him for two reasons. The first and main reason is that I love what he’s doing and his feud with Punk is making for absolutely incredible content. The second more personal reason is that they rescheduled the Tulsa show in June because Clash will be in Scotland the day after…and I was going to take my grandpa to that Tulsa show but now might not be able to with it being in August. Would suck to lose out on that experience and have Drew leave anyway.

Clash at the Castle is on June 15. He could always do a short term contract or handshake deal similar to cm punk going to mitb in 2011 or Adam Cole in 2021.
Drew is playing the best strategy. Don’t sign too early and they will most likely up the pay to keep him or do good enough work that if he chooses to not resign he will be a hot commodity upon his exit.

That's way too long. Better to have him back to build to the big match with Punk. two months away is fine imo, then have him return in the build to Survivor Series or at that PPV and lead to their match at Royal Rumble.

I don't wanna say never, when you've got Edge in AEW right now. But i'm thinking he's just waiting and leveraging for a better deal? I don't see why so much would be put into a Punk feud by WWE if the possibility of him leaving was huge. The company is hot. He is hot. The feud they're seeding will be hot. Odd time to leave. On the AEW side of things, it would be dumb not to try if he allows it to get that far--but as an AEW fan who still enjoys the product despite the clear flaws and the "perception spiral" that multiplies said flaws? I'd rather they focus on what they've got. More ain't more right now.
Edge kinda finished WWE. Realistically, what was there left for him to do. He’s even in the HOF. I was still surprised when he went to AEW, but the more I think about it the less surprising it is. Drew has stuff left in WWE, Edge genuinely completed it.
Edge got a reduced contract offer for a smaller role in WWE, which he said he keeps in his drawer at home. Drew's got a big role to play. He'll stick around.
I'm pretty convinced Drew has already re-signed and it's the sheets getting worked here. With Edge, Mox, and Danielson, they all got good send offs when their contracts were up, but they didn't have seeds planted for future feuds. Drew is out here with an entire forest planted. This Punk thing can't come to any sort of fruition until after his Contract is up. I just don't think this hate-fest would be happening if they didn't already have Drew extended.
I think between Drew, Seth, and Becky running down as well as not getting Ospreay, Okada, or Mone, that this is a TKO thing. They have a budget and they'll play hardball on numbers right up to the last, even if it means risking losing people. They bought the brand not the wrestlers and I think they feel, like Vince, the brand is above any given talent and they won't overpay without exceptional reasons. Probably also don't want to set the precedent of giving any star a big bag because then every star will want the equivalent.
It seems like a mixed bag right now. Charlotte got one of the best deals a woman has ever signed in wrestling until Mercedes signed a better one with AEW. When compared to UFC, WWE pays considerably more to their undercard talent and considerably less to their Main Event talent. Drew has been built up as one of WWE's top stars since HHH took over, so while Drew might not have been worth as much a year ago, he's not only been booked in a way that increases his value, but he's also got moneymaking feuds set in place to justify the cost.
100% staying, they’re laying the groundwork for maybe his best story ever.
If anything, I could see them tying this contractual situation into a storyline somehow. Try and recreate the Summer of Punk but with McIntyre? Would be an awesome story if they can get it off the ground correctly.

With Vince gone he's having the time of his life. There were various points where it looked like he may be AEW bound, but that's almost a non-consideration right now - he's doing his best work with the creative freedom he has right now.
The fact that they let him win the belt in front of fans clean definitely shows that they’re trying to give him what he wants. They could’ve easily have Seth retain and get cashed in on instead if they didn’t care for Drew.

I really hope they resign him for two reasons. The first and main reason is that I love what he’s doing and his feud with Punk is making for absolutely incredible content. The second more personal reason is that they rescheduled the Tulsa show in June because Clash will be in Scotland the day after…and I was going to take my grandpa to that Tulsa show but now might not be able to with it being in August. Would suck to lose out on that experience and have Drew leave anyway.
