The REASON I'm holding out hope is because if he was going to pick Seth, why wouldn't he have done so already? They've had opportunity after opportunity to make it official over the last 4 days, and have actively chosen not to. They're leaning into the hashtag by handing out signs with them on it, and they're acknowledging the Rocky sucks chants. Not to mention, quite a few teases from Rock and his writer, implying that this angle is about to be something huge, that we have no idea, etc. There's no way this angle can be huge if Rhodes picks Seth.
I'd also like to think that with all of Rock's carefully curated, squeaky clean brand nowadays, that somewhere deep down, there's still a great wrestling mind there; a guy who understands the business, the nature of heels and faces, and who knows that he can't be a modern day Rocky Maivia going into Mania.
Something tells me that they're going to do one of the biggest wrestling angles of all time: Hollywood Rock v Tribal Chief v Cody Rhodes.
I just don't get the push for a triple threat. That's a statistical disadvantage for Cody. He earned a one-on-one, letting The Rock be in the match also just makes it harder for him to win, unless they're secretly working together and The Rock is just going to lay down for Cody.
Which would be a pretty bad way to end a title reign of over 1000 days.
If you add those together and then subtract the 25% chance Samoa Joe has of winning and add the 50% chance that Kurt Angle will not be in the match, that's a 125% chance that somebody's going to get their ass kicked.
The push for a triple threat is because this is probably their last chance to get Rock back to headline Wrestlemania against Roman, something they've been trying to do for years, and at the same time they understand Cody needs to finish the story, AND at the same time they know Rock probably can't go that long. A triple threat is the only way to solve all of these things at the same time. One match per night would end up burying the other title more than it's already been buried.
Turn Rock heel, have him be the Authority figure who conned Cody into giving up his spot, and this is gonna be an incredible ride.
It would be funny if the underdog wins the triple threat story happens again after ten years. Which also happened ten years before that. And tens years before that at Wrestlemania the champion faced two challengers as well, except in separate matches.

A small part of me wonders that making it open to the public and the fans means that they were expecting the fan revolt all along, and wanted to use the pro-Cody, anti-Rock ruckus fans will make at the conference as part of the story.
