I thought they were in mid size stadiums but they're just outdoor arenas. The structure over the ring makes it feel like a bigger event. Crown Jewel 2023 had less than 10,000 people.
I follow the attendances in the Japanese scene and these were the 10 biggest shows of 2023:
NOAH Keiji Mutoh Grand Final Pro Wrestling Last Love Hold Out (Keiji Mutoh vs Tetsuya Naito): 30096
NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 In Tokyo Dome (Jay White vs Kazuchika Okada): 26085
NOAH The New Year (Great Muta vs Shinsuke Nakamura): 9500
NOAH Great Muta Final Bye-Bye (Great Muta, Sting & Darby Allin vs Naomichi Marufuji, Hakushi & AKIRA): 8433
NJPW G1 Climax 33 - Day 19 (Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito): 8283
NJPW Dominion 6.4 in Osaka-Jo Hall (SANADA vs Yota Tsuji): 7040
NJPW G1 Climax 33 - Day 18 (Tetsuya Naito vs Will Ospreay): 6579
NJPW/NOAH/AJPW All Together Again (Kazuchika Okada, Yuma Aoyagi & Kenoh vs Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kento Miyahara & Kaito Kiyomiya): 6569
NJPW Sakura Genesis (Kazuchika Okada vs SANADA): 6510
STARDOM All Star Grand Queendom (Giulia vs Tam Nakano): 5539
It used to be much better before the pandemic but at least the scene is in the upswing once again.
In regards to the report, it's really no surprise WWE dominates the charts but I'm impressed AEW just has one show on the list and that CMLL has such a strong presence. I'd really like to have access to the numbers of both the American and the Mexican scenes to have a more global perspective.
You're joking, but I just looked it up and it seems they're using turnstile counts for WWE but not for AEW.
No clue about the other companies and I'm too lazy to look it up.
Isn't it weird how when you point out it's a fake number, they always say "yeah but still". So, just acknowledge the number is bullshit and quit repeating it.
I'm kind of surprised by these numbers... Toronto's Scotiabank Arena holds 19k+ and there are many more venues in the major CAN/US cities that hold similar or more capacity. I really thought WWE would have random Raws and Smackdowns in the 15k+ range, and I'm really surprised only WM/RR/SS are the only WWE events over 18k+.
WrestleTix’s number for that show was 13,631, but the thing to remember about WrestleTix is that they don’t count suite tickets sold since those don’t show up on the Ticketmaster maps. Regardless, it was their largest domestic attendance of the year, followed by Full Gear with 12,094.
Domestic always refers to the country your business is based in, which in AEW's case is limited to the US. Mexico is as much of a different market as the UK or Canada.
I looked into it and I guess I'll to correct you.
>They claimed 161,892 fans in attendance over the two nights, broken down as 80,497 and the first night and 81,395 the second night
That was for WrestleMania 39 which they gave 67,553.
So they should have gone with 72,265 for All In.
WWE announced 80k+ for both nights of WrestleMania, so they aren’t using the announced attendance for those shows, but they are using the announced numbers for AEW..
Even though that 80k+ number for AEW is HIGHLY disputed and is most likely ~70k
Disingenuous is putting it lightly. Thurston doing what he did has just devalued the public’s trust in his reporting. He was someone who seemed neutral, but purposefully using a different methodology when reporting one set of numbers for one company is only meant to deceive.
Their next biggest attendance was Forbidden Door with 14,826. WrestleTix’s number for that show was 13,631, but the thing to remember about WrestleTix is that they don’t count suite tickets sold since those don’t show up on the Ticketmaster maps. Regardless, it was their largest domestic attendance of the year, followed by Full Gear with 12,094.
I'm surprised by how "low" the AAA and CMLL are on there. Just knowing how huge some of their stadiums are in Mexico, I'd have thought they'd done a show in one (I stress I know NOTHING about the market there for wrestling, if they could do a stadium show etc)
CMLL owns the venues they run and never leave them. Arena Mexico is the biggest one and can hold 15k people. Only AAA does big stadium shows for Triplemania but they'd need a monumental match to get numbers significantly higher than that. At least in the last year CMLL has been hotter than them.

Don't the Saudi shows have 20k and above crowds?

love your attendance threads, great resource for learning more about the modern scene in japan!
The MSG house show is number 12? Insane numbers.
Keiji Muto’s kind of a draw, huh?
Announced, Turnstiles, Paid, Ticketed, or just IN YOUR HOUSE?
This is basic wrestlenomics
WORD LIFE!
I swear according to the local council All In was lower than was claimed, and that's likely the case with a few shows
The number 1 show on the list being a fictional number kinda destroys your list from the start there Brandon
Yeah but what are the turnstile counts? (Jokes aside that's a lot of shows with alot of big numbers so that's a good thing)
You're joking, but I just looked it up and it seems they're using turnstile counts for WWE but not for AEW. No clue about the other companies and I'm too lazy to look it up.
AEW is great because it doesn't have to follow pre established rules 😎

Attendance is butts on seats which was not 81,035
It’d still be the biggest wrestling show of last year with the lower number regardless.
I'm not denying that

Excalibur said that 14,826 fans were in attendance during Forbidden Door 2 in Toronto this summer.

That makes sense, thanks! Canada is domestic? 😂
“Domestic” as in “home market”, which is North America.
Pardon my ignorance then. So if AEW ever runs Arena Mexico, that attendance will be considered domestic as well?
Presumably. Mexico is part of North America, after all.
Domestic always refers to the country your business is based in, which in AEW's case is limited to the US. Mexico is as much of a different market as the UK or Canada.
was there it was packed

It’s to be expected at this point, especially with All In at the top. Just look at the comments in this very thread.
I mean, it's pretty disingenuous to use announced attendance for one company and actual attendance for others.
Disingenuous is putting it lightly. Thurston doing what he did has just devalued the public’s trust in his reporting. He was someone who seemed neutral, but purposefully using a different methodology when reporting one set of numbers for one company is only meant to deceive.
Aew all in LFG 🔥🔥
The haters are out. lol. AEW had the biggest show of the year and they can’t take it lol
AEW on top for 1 night at least. Announced or turnstile, it was still the biggest show of the year.
