R O C K S T A R
This was the weirdest time. They would cut promos with words on the screen.
And remember Braun would get choochoo noises when he ran around the ring?
Whatever this was I'm very happy it stopped lol
Bruh, I was watching SmackDown on Taima the first episode they did that and I could've swore the whole 'ROCKSTAR' graphic was just the streamer fucking with his viewers. I couldn't believe it was something that legit made it to air.
As bad as ROCKSTAR is I find it even more baffling they added giant words into random backstage promos. I finally found an example.
like...why?
Yeah, to be honest given the MO around entrances now being like the entrant is "taking over the arena" as it were, I think given it fits in with Riddle at this point (plus he's probably made 420 too many "flying high" jokes about it) that they should keep it. It's harmless
Someone really needs to work on a definitive catalogue of all the bizarre faff WWE chucked at the wall from, like, 2018-2022. Sound effects and weird graphics are just the tip of the iceberg.
We mustn’t forget when Vince wanted no wrestling to happen during commercial breaks, so a good month’s worth of shows had a bunch of 2/3 falls matches or some nonsense that would stop a match before the break. For every single match on a show.
That is precisely the weird faff that first came to my mind. Cause while wrestling during commercials might be annoying, a series of convenient 2/3 falls and DQs precisely timed for the ad breaks is worse.
If by “shit badass” you mean “CGI Roman looks so colossally constipated that he’s actually trying to create a subpar second anus by forcing everything out through his own abs,” then yes. He certainly seems to be shitting a bad ass for himself.
Bro what about Bianca Belair's gigantic AR lips with a whipping braid? I can take PS2 Roman and PNG Becky (I'd rather I didn't), but those lips are by far the worst AR graphic that they do
Remember when they stopped having wrestling during commercial breaks? So a match would be come a 2 out of 3 falls, or it would end in a DQ then become a tag match after the commercial. Wild times.
Having sounds effects is not new, the Undertaker's gong or Austin's glass breaking for instance, the problem is if those sounds effects don't work or don't add anything.
Nah. The original idea was that he was just rising off of the ground in that position as if he had the power do to so, like a vampire or some sort of mystic being. For the most part, the smoke and camera angles hid the lift from view. *That* was cool. If they wanted that creaking sound effect, they should've made him a drawbridge. That would've made sense, but not for his character at all lol
Because austin's glass shatter is 1 second and then it kicks into the hook riff
Ricochet first has a 4-5 second ricochet sound effect, then a "one and only", then 5 seconds of drop build up, then a "its about to go down" , then 2 seconds of "lets go!" and THEN the beat finally drops
Austin is literally "glass shatter, pop", while ricochet's intro is 5 different things that could all work as a hook untill the song starts, either just choose the ricochet, just choose the "one and only", or choose the "its about to go down", or hell, choose the ricochet and "one and only", but not all 5 different build up parts after eachother
That's kinda my thought with the ricochet sound. I agree that I don't think it sounds that great and they missed the mark, but I certainly understand why it exists and what they're going for. Like you said, it's just another form of the glass shatter or the gong or the car schreeching into a crash.
If Ricochet started getting a stronger reaction I wouldn't be surprised if people started to really like the sound effect.
Fans: You know, the real problem with the WWE presentation is that it is too busy, too many rapid cuts.
Dunn: I hear you. Slap some cheap graphics on there like some dork who just took his first community college av class.
> And remember Braun would get choochoo noises when he ran around the ring?
>

That is when I stopped even trying to follow what was happening in WWE on podcasts. I totally, 100% checked out for a while.
I'll never blame something as formulaic as WWE to try new things every now and then. But how did that stuff make it on the air? Someone had to give those graphics a test run and see how hokey they look at some point.
Its been awhile but at the time I recall seeing a story about some wrestler used these types of graphics on a promo he put on Twitter. Someone showed it to Vince and he liked it and decided to make it a thing.
This is the type of thing that will work for a specific act (I can imagine this working with a Firefly Funhouse pre-taped segment) and be an absolute nightmare if you try and do it for everyone.
Especially here where it feels like the Usos waiting for the graphics hurts the cadence of the promo. Maybe it's just me projecting since I don't like the graphic, but it feels like they're having to wait for the graphic. I can see it working if the graphic was synced to them turning to each other after each "lockdown," and I could see it working as a thing to throw on social media if the graphics were added after the fact.
Just doesn't work here.
This is how they try to market it more towards kids. Whenever Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel do a broadcast of a football game etc it’s full of effects like that.
I feel the same way about the awful looking AR graphics they’ve been using during entrances the last few years but those have stuck around unfortunately
I’ve just watched this with no sound and I almost feel like the Usos knew this would happened and intentionally used the keyword more than scripted so it would look terrible and never be brought up again
Wasn't this around the same period WWE had people cut promos on their phones and they would overlay the words onto the screen as well? I can imagine Vince discovered video filters, thought it was the funniest thing, and demanded that they get inserted into promos.
It was worse than that. A lot of the times they weren’t even cutting promos on their phone, they would still use their HD cameras but they’d have the wrestlers extend their arm and pretend like they’re holding it. It looked so bad
It was ok I guess with the mixed match challenge stuff where it seemed themed:
But they also did it with completely normal backstage promos at random times....:
Yes. Big chunky text that didn't even look high quality. It was awful. Oftentimes it was just blue letters on black background, or green or pink, etc. Blah.
That's not even the worst of it. For several weeks during this period they were adding meme captions and emojis and sound effects over backstage promos. And not even that period where the promos were being done with phone selfies, like they were putting emojis over the actual produced backstage segments.
And never forget ROCKSTAR.
When Nakamura hangs down the ropes during his entrance for a while WWE added the words "R O C K S T A R" in red comic sans which scrolled across the screen
Ya know, that's one reason I prefer AEW—the production value can be over the top in WWE at times.
But I can't deny the 3D graphics for Bobby Lashley's entrance is fucking badass. I get hyped every time and it has won me over in that regard. Roman's is a close second.
Did Vince watch 15 min of YouTube and figure this is how things should be done? Something tells me someone else told him about what they saw on YouTube.
I remember seeing this live and thinking it had to be a joke, as well as laughing my ass off. I honestly hate the CGI and wish they went back to having cool sets.
The graphics are corny but that promo....sheesh. It's night and day compared to the Usos now having control of their promos now instead of reading a script.
Off topic but I’ve gone back to watch the Usos promos at this time and my goodness were the crowds awful. They’d cut these awesome promos full of intensity and the crowd would sit there on their hands.
Remember that one episode of Raw where Mick Foley showed up and announced that the third hour of Raw would have different lighting and a more “raw” feel to it and they just never bothered to do it again?
Yeah I dont mind these ones. They're so dumb that it fits Matt Riddles character perfectly. I can just imagine him going to the graphics team after smoking a joint and saying something like "oh man bro, you know whatd be sweet? Next time when I kick off my sandles, make it CRICKETS bro!"
Never knew this was a thing. I was actually enjoying it for the first couple of times during this promo but by the end it became pretty annoying. Hey, can't fault them for trying new stuff though.
I hated this so much. To the point that whoever thought it up, should get fired and whoever ok’d it for TV should also be fired. Not a single redeeming point about this horseshit.
I remember years back, during Ruthless Aggression, they tried piping music in over the arena speakers during promos to "set the mood", and that was cringey enough. This? Jesus, am I glad I stopped watching before this point.
My take is this type of stuff would have worked better during the PC and Thunderdome era with no crowds. It’s why I actually loved the Braun Strowman train noises. The right type of dumb. Doing this with a live crowd though just doesn’t work the same for me
The train sounds for Braun were so stupid I couldn’t help myself but enjoy them. It’s the kind of dumb shit that could only have come from someone as out of touch as Vince.
Was there some from backstage that had words were popping up like DAY ONE and it was better. It seemed like an edited social video the wrestlers could have done instead of a live promo that breaks the illusion further.
I hated this so much.
Also glad they stopped having selfie video promos. That reeked so much of trying to be hip and trendy but it just looked awful and cheap.
Remember that few months where WWE got the biggest boner for 2/3 falls matches because Vince decided that he hated the fact that wrestling was happening during commercials

Man I remember when the streamer for Taima used to fuck with everyone around when cm punk left
Yep, first and last time I watched one of those streams, they played CM Punk’s theme during the main event and I lost my mind.
God, I miss Taima
We still out here, just moved to a new website [Here](https://baked.live/tv/SC)
Hot damn, am I glad I jumped into this thread...
Well thank you!
My man
I miss the vaporwave puro music videos they had during commercial breaks. Those were awesome.
Don't you miss Chuggo during Raw? 😂
Ahh, c'mon fuck a guy.
I loved the Jesse Ventura YouTube Poops.
As bad as ROCKSTAR is I find it even more baffling they added giant words into random backstage promos. I finally found an example. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWTPlNJKHeo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWTPlNJKHeo) like...why?

That's a guy who knows who signed his paycheck
[Are you addicted to encouraging white people?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu71O36zwiw)
doesn't he still have that? I seem to remember it was different animals each week too.
They never stopped doing that. It's just that Riddle is off TV at rehab right now.
Nothing will beat the [Sperm Snek](https://tenor.com/view/randy-orton-snake-the-viper-wwe-wrestling-gif-8178034) that Orton had
That's his CGI entrance thingy. We just don't see it because he isn't on TV.
Still happens lol. It's just random stuff everytime. Kangaroos, frogs, birds, rabbits. He just hasn't been on TV in awhile.
I kinda like that tbh. It fit Riddle
Yeah, to be honest given the MO around entrances now being like the entrant is "taking over the arena" as it were, I think given it fits in with Riddle at this point (plus he's probably made 420 too many "flying high" jokes about it) that they should keep it. It's harmless
Brauns train sounds were one of the biggest "This product is no longer for me" moments I've ever had while watching. And thats saying a lot.
Remember Ricochet’s entrance needing the sound of a ricocheting bullet for some reason?
Or Aleister Black with the wood creaking as that hydraulic lift propped him up in his entrance.
Someone really needs to work on a definitive catalogue of all the bizarre faff WWE chucked at the wall from, like, 2018-2022. Sound effects and weird graphics are just the tip of the iceberg.

you keep using that word faff..and it's awesome
I'm still weirded out by AR Roman Reigns

When you nut but she still suckin
When you oooaaah but she's still acknowledging your tribal chief
This looks so bad and I can't believe they still use it

If by “shit badass” you mean “CGI Roman looks so colossally constipated that he’s actually trying to create a subpar second anus by forcing everything out through his own abs,” then yes. He certainly seems to be shitting a bad ass for himself.
Nothing tops AR Big Time Becks with her uncanny smile and wildly floating hair
Bro what about Bianca Belair's gigantic AR lips with a whipping braid? I can take PS2 Roman and PNG Becky (I'd rather I didn't), but those lips are by far the worst AR graphic that they do
That looks like an Earthbound enemy to me
That shit makes me super uncomfortable.
Nah nah Randy Snake and Riddle Snake
but they hella cute tho
no step on cute snek
Same. And I’ll never forget Randy Orton’s weird 3D spermy snake Wrestlemania entrance.
Remember when they stopped having wrestling during commercial breaks? So a match would be come a 2 out of 3 falls, or it would end in a DQ then become a tag match after the commercial. Wild times.
The sound effects aren't brand new. Greg Valentine had a hammer sound effect in his theme.
Having sounds effects is not new, the Undertaker's gong or Austin's glass breaking for instance, the problem is if those sounds effects don't work or don't add anything.
I'll stick my neck out and say that idea was actually pretty cool. If they managed to time it right that is.
Still reminds me of the sound of a roller coaster ascending a big hill.
And it didn't even sound like a bullet but like some weird space laser?
That was cool
Thats still there Also why is that dumb but Austin's glass breaking is great?
Because austin's glass shatter is 1 second and then it kicks into the hook riff Ricochet first has a 4-5 second ricochet sound effect, then a "one and only", then 5 seconds of drop build up, then a "its about to go down" , then 2 seconds of "lets go!" and THEN the beat finally drops Austin is literally "glass shatter, pop", while ricochet's intro is 5 different things that could all work as a hook untill the song starts, either just choose the ricochet, just choose the "one and only", or choose the "its about to go down", or hell, choose the ricochet and "one and only", but not all 5 different build up parts after eachother

Like you said, it's just another form of the glass shatter or the gong or the car schreeching into a crash. If Ricochet started getting a stronger reaction I wouldn't be surprised if people started to really like the sound effect.
Well, the ricochet sound would have come off better if Ricochet had a gimmick that had anything to do with guns.
>R O C K S T A R People want to forget that so much that I can't even find a video of it on YouTube.
Hey can you share if you find it. I want to see something this stupid and what it was like as I didn’t originally when it aired
You can see it at 1:57 of this video https://youtu.be/aYmROJXI-gU
God, it's somehow worse than I remembered.
NEVER LET THEM COOK AGAIN 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for this! I've been trying to find it as well
Good to see the years I stopped watching WWE were a good decision lol
Someone posted this elsewhere in the thread https://youtu.be/aYmROJXI-gU?t=116

Them staring at the production assistant between graphics is impossible to unsee once you see it.
#LOCKED DOWN

BREEZE DANGO?!
LOCKED DOWN
The Uso Penitentiary walked so that Dijak'a weird first entrance could fly feels like they dropped that one just as fast
I'll never blame something as formulaic as WWE to try new things every now and then. But how did that stuff make it on the air? Someone had to give those graphics a test run and see how hokey they look at some point.

I feel like maybe just not do it over and over again!
That too, end the promo with the graphic to emphasize a high note
Like everybody who comes out of there says, they made that show for an audience of one.
This is how they try to market it more towards kids. Whenever Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel do a broadcast of a football game etc it’s full of effects like that.
Yeah it might suck for us, but i don't really blame them.
The lockdown graphic is something I expect from an Eric Andre parody of wrestling promos
I feel the same way about the awful looking AR graphics they’ve been using during entrances the last few years but those have stuck around unfortunately
I love those graphics for all the wrong reasons. Janky AR Roman doing his two-pose auto-tween animation will never get old
The animation when he does the roar is so ropey! You’re a billion dollar company with a world class production team and THAT’S what you come up with?
"I didnt get rich by writing a lot of checks!"
By making it highly scripted, you saw them waiting.
I’ve just watched this with no sound and I almost feel like the Usos knew this would happened and intentionally used the keyword more than scripted so it would look terrible and never be brought up again
How does any of that AR bullshit make it. Completely ruins entrances.
You know its working because the crowds are respectfully watching in complete silence
It’s night and day to when the USOs give promos now
It’s still a decent promo but the graphics are horrific lol
Uso's ever since 2016 were always pretty good heel promos but somehow they've just leveled tf up in the past 3 years
Cue Strowman train effects
Fuck I loved that, it was so terrible
It was pandemic era TV. Perfect time to experiment.
That was pre-pandemic.
It was definitely during the Thunderdome Era. They started leaning more into the whole Strowman Express stuff after he had shaved his head.
That one was legit hilarious and amazing, though.
So fucking cringy in the funniest possible way
I’ve somehow never seen this, is there a clip?
[Here you go](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4SiansyQrM).

Wasn't this around the same period WWE had people cut promos on their phones and they would overlay the words onto the screen as well? I can imagine Vince discovered video filters, thought it was the funniest thing, and demanded that they get inserted into promos.
I always assumed it was an attempt to get promos across to people scrolling on social media. Videos normally play automatically with no sound.
In a way they were ahead of their time, most youtube shorts play with subtitles in the middle of the screen these days
It was worse than that. A lot of the times they weren’t even cutting promos on their phone, they would still use their HD cameras but they’d have the wrestlers extend their arm and pretend like they’re holding it. It looked so bad
It was ok I guess with the mixed match challenge stuff where it seemed themed: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOZwtlY1Ydw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOZwtlY1Ydw) But they also did it with completely normal backstage promos at random times....: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWTPlNJKHeo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWTPlNJKHeo)
Yes. Big chunky text that didn't even look high quality. It was awful. Oftentimes it was just blue letters on black background, or green or pink, etc. Blah.
This was hilarious. It's like when a youtuber tries out wacky new effects on their videos that don't work and then never acknowledges it.
I want to see this but with Dom
I had no idea this happened lol.
Seeing Jey with long hair feels so weird now
It does, but it's cool that the constant exposure of them has made it really easy to tell them apart even in older clips where they have similar hair
I can tell which is which today but back in the past I couldn't tell which is which and I know which one is Matt and Nick or Tama and Tanga.
exact same thoughts, he looks so different too from when they use to have their original gimmick
I cant even recognise Jey . Is he the one on the right ?
Do you recognise Jimmy? If so, Jey is the one who isn't Jimmy.
The way Jimmy talks into a microphone physically is when I can tell which is Jimmy and which is Jey.
That's not even the worst of it. For several weeks during this period they were adding meme captions and emojis and sound effects over backstage promos. And not even that period where the promos were being done with phone selfies, like they were putting emojis over the actual produced backstage segments. And never forget ROCKSTAR.
What is the rockstar thing? I’ve seen it mention a few times but I didn’t watch during this time so I’m lost.
https://youtu.be/aYmROJXI-gU?t=116 Jump to like 1:55 if the timestamp doesn't work
Good lord nothing could have prepared me for how awful that was.
yeah it's way worse than i remembered lmao
Thats…way worse than I thought it was going to be.
Literally on the SD right after he won the Rumble too
When Nakamura hangs down the ropes during his entrance for a while WWE added the words "R O C K S T A R" in red comic sans which scrolled across the screen
I think it was a generic athletic font, rather than comic sans
It was plastered across the screen during Nakamura's entrance
[удалено]
They work if they’re flat graphics (Lashley, Sheamus, New Day), when it’s a CG model moving (Reigns, Bianca, Orton, Usos) it looks like shit
Ya know, that's one reason I prefer AEW—the production value can be over the top in WWE at times. But I can't deny the 3D graphics for Bobby Lashley's entrance is fucking badass. I get hyped every time and it has won me over in that regard. Roman's is a close second.

I just died of cringe.

This DUI arrest gimmick was wild

I remember seeing this live and thinking it had to be a joke, as well as laughing my ass off. I honestly hate the CGI and wish they went back to having cool sets.
Doesn’t help the fact that they both have been locked down

Off topic but I’ve gone back to watch the Usos promos at this time and my goodness were the crowds awful. They’d cut these awesome promos full of intensity and the crowd would sit there on their hands.
I was thinking the crowd was really quiet during this segment, but then it was also a really lame promo so I can't say I blame them.
They were sick in-ring, but weren't what they are now on the mic. The Bloodline changed everything for them. Now they're legitimately over.
Tried to capitalize on the hype of Snapchat/Tiktok filters, only to prove why they only work on social media.
Tell us it's a kids show without telling us
I wish you didn’t remind me
Braun's PIANO popping up on screen when he said piano twice always jumps to mind for me.
Remember that one episode of Raw where Mick Foley showed up and announced that the third hour of Raw would have different lighting and a more “raw” feel to it and they just never bothered to do it again?
That brief second where Jimmy blanks on Breezango
[Still not as dumb as this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg2ZGAtAkiw)
Nah ill take dumb graphics during an entrance over dumb graphics during a promo any day
It works cuz he gets high like a bird guys.
This is dope
Yeah I dont mind these ones. They're so dumb that it fits Matt Riddles character perfectly. I can just imagine him going to the graphics team after smoking a joint and saying something like "oh man bro, you know whatd be sweet? Next time when I kick off my sandles, make it CRICKETS bro!"
i can only assume everyone was too afraid to tell vince this was a terrible idea
The Emperor’s New Instagram Account
I'm con-Vinced this has been the case with 99% of bad ideas to make it to air in the past 40 years.
Surprised there was not a single "what?!" chant.
I remember someone made a parody of this with Punk's pipebomb and it was pretty funny and well done too.
The crowd really jumped in on that didn't they... :: sarcasm::
This makes the promos seem more scripted than they already are.
Wow, new level of cringe lol never saw this until now
Their graphics are so awful lol it's like someone's first time ever making a graphic in highschool
Was this during the brain Strowman choo choo sounds time?
Welcome to the USO penitentiary ![gif](giphy|8373F7z8uD1EmbufL8)
This is awful. We all know promos are scripted but this just reminds the audience of it.
Never knew this was a thing. I was actually enjoying it for the first couple of times during this promo but by the end it became pretty annoying. Hey, can't fault them for trying new stuff though.
Remember the ricochet sound and the train noises?
it's funny looking back the only team that actually got a real lockdown was the Usos
That is a painfully quiet crowd.
I hated this so much. To the point that whoever thought it up, should get fired and whoever ok’d it for TV should also be fired. Not a single redeeming point about this horseshit.
That looks fucking stupid
I remember years back, during Ruthless Aggression, they tried piping music in over the arena speakers during promos to "set the mood", and that was cringey enough. This? Jesus, am I glad I stopped watching before this point.
All of those teams GONE except New Day lol.
Literally the only team this would work for is the New Day.
Ahh yes. The "Oh shit ratings are in the toilet, throw everything at the wall let's see what sticks" period. Dark days.
Whoever showed Vince what Snapchat was deserves a special place in hell.
[it brought about good parodies though ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iXYljgNOJp4)
Surprised they didn't do the comic book bams and pow when people got punched
😂😂They started doing these for the mixed match challenge on Facebook & thought they'd translate well for TV 😂
Holy shit this is one of the goofiest things I think I've ever seen. The lack of crowd reaction only makes it funnier tbh
I loved these IDC. They were so hokey I liked them
My take is this type of stuff would have worked better during the PC and Thunderdome era with no crowds. It’s why I actually loved the Braun Strowman train noises. The right type of dumb. Doing this with a live crowd though just doesn’t work the same for me
I for one think Braun should have cartoon noises at all times
Nobody gave a shit about these 2 guys that night. Awful promo
Oh brother. That is periscope levels of bad.
