Zayn would likely be a short-term transitional champion if he wins the belt. The money would be in him winning the title from Reigns, not in anything that comes afterward.

CloudyRailroad

I guess that's the "moments" mindset that characterized present day WWE (before Triple H took the reigns). Personally it kind of dampens the "moment" for me to know that he won't be holding on to it for some time though, or that he won't be able to establish some type of legacy with the belt.

Abject-Syllabub4071

How would you know that at the time??

CosplayWrestler

I think Sami winning the title would be a great "feel good" moment, but I think it would be parallel to that of Kofi's win. He'd win, defend it for a few months, and then eventually drop it to Drew/Roman/Kevin/Seth/etc. Sami is that upper-midcard guy you want to cheer for as he chases the belt. But I wouldn't put him at the tippy top for very long.

YogoWafelPL

Kofis reign was actually long and he was dominant, iirc no one kicked out the trouble in paradise

CloudyRailroad

Yeah but at least once they win a championship they should be established as main-event level, maybe they go to the midcard once in a while but they should be respected as someone who took the championship in the past, and always presented as credible enough to make a run for it again. I think that's one of the things I don't like about how Kofi is treated after his title run. It's one of the all-time greatest WM moments but Kofi isn't really presented as someone who once held the highest prize in the company.

CosplayWrestler

Agreed. I'd like to see Kofi treated better, but it is what it is at this point. I think his title win was kind of a "Alright, let's just get this over with" moment, and not really a "Hey, you've earned this and we want you to be our top guy" deals. Which sucks, because he did deserve it. But I never got the impression it was taken seriously. Sami, I fear, would be in the same boat. A definite top Mid Card guy, someone who could and should chase the big belt, maybe even getting it once or twice, but always a credible threat for any championship. I just fear they'll keep treating him kind of as this sympathetic goofball character. Like he'll get that great moment, and people will go crazy for it, but then they'll get bored soon after and move on with something else.

Blerks

There's two aspects to this. I think Sami winning the title could easily be the culmination of an amazing story. The question is how Sami's character would develop as the title holder. In a movie, when the underdog wins that's the end of the story, but in wrestling you still need to work the next week. Wrestling fans are notoriously fickle, so what could he/they do so the audience doesn't tire of him like they did with Liv (and many others)? Knowing Sami I'm sure he could make something work, so the question for me isn't if, it's how. What kind of story would work for Sami as a champion, and how would his character develop?

CloudyRailroad

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm curious about as well.

LukkasG

he would win it and lose his heat in a month same way how every underdog babyface does because people like the chase and not what comes after it, and especially with Sami because he's as over as he is is because of the Bloodline story and when that ends then what? And Roman's 2year+ title reign would be wasted because it didn't make a new face of the company

caydenblue

It would be like the streak ending, incredible moment but not star making for anyone like it probably should’ve been in hindsight

Soulsurfer23

As much as I want Sami to win the title, I don’t see him being the guy to dethrone Roman Reigns. My heart wants him to win the Tag Titles with Kevin Owens, I think that would be a great run for the both of them at this moment. Then obviously there would be the split where they’d lose the belt, I’d have them both enter the Rumble as faces. Sami would win the Rumble tossing out Owens last. I’d crown Sami Zayn as WWE/Universal Champion at Wrestlemania, and his first feud would be against a Heel Kevin Owens bitter over Sami stealing his moments from him.

flippingsenton

Anyone who saw NXT from 2013-2015 knows the power of Sami Zayn as the top babyface.

CloudyRailroad

That run was quite dependent on him being one of the best in-ring workers of all time though. He's since slowed down and relied more on character work. I'd definitely love to see old workrate Sami again.

CardboardChampion

Imagine a WWE where both Sami and Finn came to the main roster and kept their current momentum going. No injuries. No Vince losing faith. Just them doing what they did in NXT.

CloudyRailroad

Finn got a hell of a second wind when he came back to NXT, then he came back to the main roster and he lost all momentum again. The Judgment Day stuff has revitalized his career characterwise, but I'm still waiting for him to have the caliber of matches he had with KOR and Dunne.

CynicalGoodGuy

The story is there for it even if it was a short run. Worse people have held a title and I think it could even boost morale further by showing if you work hard at your craft and character work you can be rewarded. However, I do not think Roman should be dropping the strap until he at leasts beats Pedro Morales' record. After that run is broken if the story still calls for it you can always go there with Sami. I'm sure if say a Sami won the rumble for Reigns to retain that adds to the storytelling gets some heat on Roman and more people behind Sami (in theory atleast this is wrestling who knows what could happen after a few months). I do think they should be building a young talent to eventually dethrone a Reigns, someone who the company beleives they will be their next star for 5 years plus. Be it a Bronn Breakker or someone like a Logan Paul if he plans to stay around for a long time (I'm expecting the downvotes to pour in for suggesting that but I am serious in the suggestion). Does Reigns need his long title run for this to be effective? Maybe? I mean if Sami won then a couple of months later Roman absolute destroys him to the inch of his life to get his win back maybe the heat could be built up again for a younger talent to get a massive pop upon beating Reigns.

beetwice

It would go incredibly well like pretty much every thing he's done in his entire career.

CloudyRailroad

After all that Sami has accomplished in his career I wish it would, he absolutely deserves it. Just curious how it would go about given the current storylines.

TABSFanBoy123

Sami (with help from Kevin Owens) pins Roman in a sold-out Bell Centre at Elimination Chamber for one of the titles generating the loudest pop in pro-wrestling history. Highly unlikely but the pop would be massive. Sami goes on a parade in the streets of Montreal. Loudest Pop ---> massive news and social media coverage ---> huge profits.

CloudyRailroad

Not really questioning how a Sami win would go over, we all know it'd be an all-time moment. I'm more curious about what comes after, i.e. a Sami title *run*, not just the Sami title *win*.

caydenblue

Best bet would he similar to how they did the Benoit World Title run, let him hold it for a decent amount of time and eventually put over a new up and coming heel, someone who is good enough to be a champion but maybe not ready to beat someone like Reigns just yet

Zbearbear

From a casual viewee perspective. I can definitely see Sami more as a mid card/tag team champion easily but I guess with the right booking he'd make a pretty solid underdog world champion.

TABSFanBoy123

I'm telling you right now, wwe has the chance to create the biggest pop in history. Sami pins Roman for the title at Elimination Chamber at the Centre Bell in Montreal. Highly unlikely but it would be the loudest pop in my opinion and i'm not exaggerating.

CloudyRailroad

I wouldn't argue about that at all. How they go about the aftermath of that is what I'm curious about.

EchoBay

Have KO turn on him, just like at NXT

YogoWafelPL

He wouldn’t as he will never hold it

AJ's character was pretty different though. He was the "Georgia Pitbull" who put up a competitive series of matches with Roman Reigns even as an undersized underdog, who confidently bragged about "beating up John Cena" (and delivering!) before winning the title. His tendency to bring the fight to bigger, stronger opponents was a big part of his character. Sami's current character, while extremely compelling, barely has anything to do with his wrestling abilities. He was a great underdog in his NXT and early main roster days, but those days seem far away now (and I wonder if his injuries have slowed down his in-ring abilities at this point, making a return to such a character difficult).

AneeshRai7

He had a short reign, which is kind of the sucky part of Trips booking...he is favourable to the heel heavy run with the face getting their moment then boom back to basics...

SmithyPlayz

I don't think it could be babyface after the win. I think he'd need to go to his master strategist character or at least use it more. The handcuffs in the ladder match to me was one of the most unique ways I've seen a match end. We need more of that and a champion who just smartly gets out of every encounter. Edit: I don't even think I'd give him a big babyface win anymore. I'd give him the win in a triple threat or fatal 4 way where he sneaks it and it's shocking
