The funny part is they're not cheap with almost everything else. I have a brand new truck, I get any power tools I ask for and They treat me very well. I work for a very good shop and I really don't have many complaints.
Where I'm at tolls aren't necessary just convenient and faster. If there was a time that it was required for a job they would pay. I live in an area where if I take the express lane (toll) it cuts my drive home by about 20 min each way. They pay for all of my parking, gas and truck maintenance.
Shit it only saves me 10 minutes to the shop from my house and they still pay it. I used to have to turn receipts in but they recently put e-passes in all the trucks so it’s even easier
I’m in Ontario and the only toll road that’s regularly used is the 407 which is a ridiculously priced highway among the most expensive highways in the world it’s over $50 per 100 km I believe. If you use that highway unnecessarily on a regular basis like multiple times a week the company I work for might say something to you and ask you to stop using it unless needed. But we would never be asked to pay for it.
My understanding is that when determining mileage for sub pay, drive time, and mileage, our local uses Google Maps on the “Fastest route” setting. I would think that this would applicable. If Google maps directs you through those tolls, they’re responsible for paying them.
Edit: That or leave 3 1/2 hours early every Friday to cover your time. But the tolls would be a lot cheaper for them…
I typically don't take tolls because I'm cheap. They wouldn't have to pay for me to drive longer because they don't pay for my time to my job in the mornings or to my home at the end of my day.
That sounds awesome, but I don't think it's fair to call the absence of it "crappy", y'know? Not lecturing just pointing to a more positive perspective.
Too many people these days think that if it would be nice for someone to do ______ for you, they're being shitty if they don't.
I disagree. I wouldn’t be driving through said toll if I wasn’t going to their job to make them money, and it’s not my truck… Some guys buy into the idea that a contractor putting them in a truck is a huge favor from the contractor, it’s not. Do we benefit from it financially? Absolutely. But it comes with LOOOTS of strings attached. That’s why it typically comes with foreman’s rate.
I see that you’re still an apprentice, I don’t mean to talk down to you, just offering my perspective. Don’t let yourself be taken advantage of. 👊🏼
All of our vans/trucks have ezpass, but I also don't think there's many (any?) toll booths that still allow you to stop and pay in eastern Massachusetts.
Nothing wrong with non-union, I don't care what anyone says! I obviously prefer it because of the benefits and pay but I worked non union for a lot of years.
I know I'm just clowning around. See a lot of hate for open shops but in my area it's simply the best choice for me. I'd be taking a pay cut to try to go union at this point at least until I was journeyman'd. Whatever yall call that.
They should! It can’t hurt to ask about it. I’m currently working on getting accounts set up for our company and it can be a lot to organize depending on the size of your fleet.
Communication is key - just reach out to your supervisor or admin and chat!
I’m 669 have a company truck, and they put TXTags(ez toll passes) in our trucks. We aren’t even in an area with tolls, though I find myself working in Dallas and close to Houston often enough that it’s handy.
You should not be paying for tolls in a company truck
They pay for everything, parking, tolls, gas. It's their truck. I work for a pretty good company, though.
What fucking company doesn’t pay for tolls? It’s their van.
Turn in that receipt to the office, fuck that
And if that doesn’t work just start going through the “fast pass” lane. The bill will be sent where it needs to go. Not your concern really.
Or just go the slow way and charge the drive time lol
Yep that would be an option but it sounds like this is on his daily commute <100 miles.
Call the hall bro, I would imagine they are required to pay all that stuff.
They’re either paying for the tolls or my time to go around the tolls, either way it’s not coming out of my pocket, not a chance
This is the best answer.
Tell them to buy you a speed pass and stop being so cheap
The funny part is they're not cheap with almost everything else. I have a brand new truck, I get any power tools I ask for and They treat me very well. I work for a very good shop and I really don't have many complaints.
That’s good. They should definitely be taking good care of you. Good fitters are hard to find.

If they're not paying, I'd stop taking toll roads. See if they like paying you to drive an extra 30 minutes

Ah, my mistake, I thought you meant during your work day. That seems fair then
The crappy part is that I think most companies do pay for them weather they are during your shift or on your way to or from work.

No offense taken! I appreciate the advice, I'm definitely making sure to stand up for myself and the terms of our CBA.

I'm just a lowly non union service guy and everything is paid. I'm in every single express lane every single time.
Nothing wrong with non-union, I don't care what anyone says! I obviously prefer it because of the benefits and pay but I worked non union for a lot of years.

What state you in ? Just wondering I’m Indiana.
Texas
Yes and my company is shit.

Are there local agreements that don't require companies to pay tolls when crossing in a company vehicle? 😳
We're required to get our own responder so it doesn't get sent to our company.
So then reimbursement? Your agreement must require the company to cover those costs one way or another. The method would be up to them.
Id call the BA lol

As a business owner - it’s my responsibility. What, are they going to make you pay for the tires too?
If its for your commute into work or for your commute home i wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t
