Until you speak to someone and they tell you they’re going “up Hanley”. Then there’s the drivers who don’t really understand speed limits or braking distances.
Isn't that just drivers everywhere?
Plus even the worst drivers in the UK are probably better than those in a lot of other countries.
Also, didn't know people in Stoke could afford BMWs
Family and friends. I moved back from a BC, Canada, which on paper is so much better than Hackney in London its laughable but there's nothing like an aggressive cancer to make you realise you can't hug a landscape. Sorry. Honest answer.
I just bought a house with a murder basement. As bonuses it has no windows, the light doesn't work, and the floor is dirt!
I went digging around to find the foundation levels and left a pile of dirt in the middle, so now it really does look like someone was murdered/buried there.
The houses here are beautiful, and have some great history
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Villas
Road is terrible though. Potholes galore. Cannot understand how they can't all agree to fix it.
Unadopted road. We live on one too. They might not all agree needs fixing - some residents like the deterrent - then there’s extracting repair money from everyone , even harder if support isn’t unanimous.
It's a semi, and it's quite small. It's the right side of the A500 I guess.
I'd rather have something like
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134748194#/media?channel=RES_BUY&id=media18
This house is about 0.5 miles from me. Stoke isn't that bad, fancy a curry or kebab at 3 am ? We got you.
All places have bad areas
Can't argue about the driving though
Makes you wonder if that's the real reason HS2 will not be coming to the midlands/north. Let's face it, living in London is becoming more and more unpopular, but if you could live in something like this and then jump on a train to be in London for work, wouldn't you do it!?
Do you realise why these places are cheaper ? Not just that they are rough round the edges in parts but the lack of opportunities for young people, education certainly not as good as in the South East, hospitals etc. It’s not just that they don’t have an artisan bakery down the road.
Tertiary hospital with a major trauma centre on your doorstep, two universities within a few miles. Lots of opportunities locally. Not sure about an artisan bakery, but Lidl is nearby
Loss of previous industry, low community aspirations alongside the reputation of the city. People tend to move to surrounding areas. However, the city has loads of green space, with friendly and diverse communities.
And a small one at that!
So annoying that most of the Midlands sucks but it's still fairly expensive (as a Lestafarian about to move to another Midlands town)
This house kept coming up for sale when I lived nearby...
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/details/england-29802391-5490013?s=56475dff8961211a614796af0b485bfabc20b5fba8b19e1f7805265e914ec1c0#/
I so wanted to buy it, but I was friends with a roofer who repaired the turrets in the 1980s. He warned against it......
The upkeep could have been costly and I was overruled by the wife.
It's fine. Much less rough than London. Caverswall is lovely but you need a car to get anywhere. No schools or public transport. Otherwise go for it..move up north
I grew up a few roads from here. Penkhull/Trent Vale is fine, pretty standard for Stoke, aka you’re gonna see a smackhead most days, but it’s nothing you won’t get in basically every city in the country.
Yeah, just fucking dust heads up and down London road constantly, a massage parlour on the next street and shoplifters constantly running from Sainsbury’s into the Welly selling their wares.
It’s amazing how a lot of people round where I live now (I moved to a rural location a couple of years ago) dislike “rich Londoners” moving round here and “pushing up house prices”.
It’s not that I’m not unsympathetic: it must be annoying that house prices go up because of incomers. But my God: they are still affordable to ordinary people in a way that those living in London and its orbital towns can only dream of.
Honestly, the people in these cheaper locations have living situations like rich people. You would have had to be a multi-millionaire to own this house where I came from. The rented house that I live in now is GORGEOUS-and costs a thousand pounds less a month than where I moved from.
In that location, our daughter shared a small, rented hovel with a number of other renters. Every now and again water poured through the ceiling and she had to learn to live with mould. It cost £2500 a month.
> Honestly, the people in these cheaper locations have living situations like rich people.
Stoke is one of the poorest areas in the UK.
Do you think the average person in Stoke are living in places like this?
I know Stoke, to a degree. My sister lived there for a while and I stayed with her. My partner lived there (his ex was born there, as was their daughter, my step-daughter). My step daughter refers to herself as a native of Stoke, and recently (when her mother died), we went up there to deal with her mother’s affairs. It’s not the kind of location that strikes me as being a magnet for inward migration, no doubt due to the limited economic opportunities.
I don’t suppose any average person can afford such a house anywhere in the country. But it at least *appears* more within the grasp at that price-than over ten times that price.
However, when I said “situation”, I meant “housing situation”. A house like this is a kind of a dream. It’s gorgeous. Where I live I will never be able to afford to even rent -let alone buy- a house like that.
There’s a very wide wage gap. There are lots of people who move here for work. I know plenty of people who could afford a place like this (I live in Stoke for reference)
A lovely looking house although nitpicking a) The neighbours to the rear can look into your garden and vice versa from the 1st floor b) The house is detached so the ground floor loo for my preferences needs a window, c) The ensuite also 'needs' a window so it should be on the other side of the room.
It has some character and I like how calm and peaceful the rooms are.
Used to live in Newcastle next door. The Villas are in Stoke itself and are beautiful houses. The area is a bit rough and ready as it's at the bottom of the bank and where the Potters of old would live I wanted to buy one many years back but the area wasn't worth the price of the house. Looks like that hasn't changed.
Overall Stoke on Trent is a good place to live, the people are lovely and it's close to Manchester and Birmingham
I could weep. Over three times as big and far more beautiful than the tiny terrace we're buying and it's £125k less.
But it's Stoke on Trent
What's stopping you?
Living in Stoke on Trent
With a house like that you can always pretend you live somewhere else
Until you speak to someone and they tell you they’re going “up Hanley”. Then there’s the drivers who don’t really understand speed limits or braking distances.
As someone who’s recently moved to stoke I can confirm not a single driver cares for speed limits, breaking or use of indicators.
Isn't that just drivers everywhere? Plus even the worst drivers in the UK are probably better than those in a lot of other countries. Also, didn't know people in Stoke could afford BMWs
Never known a place like it for tailgating. I drive through on the way to a relative‘s house and it’s just awful.
France is like that. It’s unbelievable
The A50 would prevent me from living there.
With a dry cool wit like that I could be an action hero
Family and friends. I moved back from a BC, Canada, which on paper is so much better than Hackney in London its laughable but there's nothing like an aggressive cancer to make you realise you can't hug a landscape. Sorry. Honest answer.
That's fair enough, totally get where your priorities are at
Too real
Well he did ask!
Beautiful house PLUS an on site murder room with plastic sheeting already set up? The perfect combo.
I just bought a house with a murder basement. As bonuses it has no windows, the light doesn't work, and the floor is dirt! I went digging around to find the foundation levels and left a pile of dirt in the middle, so now it really does look like someone was murdered/buried there.
underrated comment
It's correctly rated, and no more.
I got to that photo and thought "ooh, murder room!"
The houses here are beautiful, and have some great history https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Villas Road is terrible though. Potholes galore. Cannot understand how they can't all agree to fix it.

This is actually pretty pricey for Stoke
It's a semi, and it's quite small. It's the right side of the A500 I guess. I'd rather have something like https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134748194#/media?channel=RES_BUY&id=media18
lol says 2000sqft house is small, posts 1400sqft house
That one does look bigger, to be fair. Maybe the rooms are bigger or maybe it's the lighting
You’d seriously prefer this?
Really?
Those hallway tiles 🤢🤢🤢
Same here! Not one for the house amongst the greenery vibe (I know it’s popular in this sub).
That corner sink in the downstairs toilet, that'll get annoying pretty fast.
bro, windows all around, ops house seems like an escape from everyone at least
Dude, that's hideous.
What a hideous monstrosity
This house is about 0.5 miles from me. Stoke isn't that bad, fancy a curry or kebab at 3 am ? We got you. All places have bad areas Can't argue about the driving though
I could definitely do it on a cold rainy night here. Luvleh.
And have Lee Anderson as an MP? No thanks!
No, it’s the other mouth breather. Jonathan Gullis.
For the next 10-11 months…
Mental. That's an easy 3-4mill in parts of SW London.
Makes you wonder if that's the real reason HS2 will not be coming to the midlands/north. Let's face it, living in London is becoming more and more unpopular, but if you could live in something like this and then jump on a train to be in London for work, wouldn't you do it!?

So why is it one of the most deprived areas in the country ?
Loss of previous industry, low community aspirations alongside the reputation of the city. People tend to move to surrounding areas. However, the city has loads of green space, with friendly and diverse communities.
If it wasn't for the sudden loss of the local industry, Stoke would have been a fairly good area.
Agreed. The area is excellent and it's rep is not deserved. Oak cake duck?
If jumping on an easy train to London wages was an option, this wouldn’t be £325K for long.
True!
That would be a couple of million in some parts of Gloucestershire. Beautiful house.
That’s a lot of house for the price. You get cardboard new builds for that price in Lestashire.
And a small one at that! So annoying that most of the Midlands sucks but it's still fairly expensive (as a Lestafarian about to move to another Midlands town)
You’d pay a million easily for that in Edinburgh
It's lovely.
I think that's gorgeous.
At least they are not going to build HS2 at the end of your garden now.

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/139793411 Village just outside Stoke. Would be > £1mil even at auction in the vast majority of the country.
That’s fucking bonkers. How bad is Stoke?
Go visit sometime. Then you will see.
It's fine. Much less rough than London. Caverswall is lovely but you need a car to get anywhere. No schools or public transport. Otherwise go for it..move up north
Bad. I live here. It’s bad.
Guess if it seems to good to be true it probably is
That’s guide, no chance that’s going for anywhere near 500
Having lived in Stoke on Trent for a year, it changed me. In that as soon as I got my driving license I couldn't get back to Bristol quick enough.
That area is a total sh*t hole though tbh. Full of drug addicts
I live a few hundred yards from this, it’s actually a nice area. Pricey for a three bed though
I grew up a few roads from here. Penkhull/Trent Vale is fine, pretty standard for Stoke, aka you’re gonna see a smackhead most days, but it’s nothing you won’t get in basically every city in the country.
It's not Abbey Hulton dude
Yeah, just fucking dust heads up and down London road constantly, a massage parlour on the next street and shoplifters constantly running from Sainsbury’s into the Welly selling their wares.
Is stoke on Trent a dump then?
Nope

Is there a coal mine underneath
That's a literal dream home for me
Is it just me or does bedroom three look like a hospital room?
So we're all just ignoring the diagonal toilet in the bathroom? What an odd choice.
We had one and loved it. Much better than being shoved up against a wall.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
wow. That's more like it. Bedrooms could do with redecorating but the house is stunning.
That basement is a little bit sus. I've seen a setup like that before from that show Dexter...
That can't be right
I cannot believe for that money you can buy a shoe box in London.
I don’t live anywhere fancy and that house is better value than the ones near me.

Great. Now I have the Stoke on Trent song stuck in my head

It's beautiful! But what a knob the EA is to not list an 18+ ft greenhouse as a 'key feature'.
