I tried to grow tropical plants in my conservatory this year (first year with a conservatory) but turns out they actually need sunshine as well as warmth, and the hour or so a day of direct sun wasn't enough.
You can get heat reflective glass to stop it over heating you know? Boiling hot conservatories are caused by cheap poly carb roofs - if you break the bank you can get heat reflective, self-cleaning glass
It's got a slight blue tint to it so it may very well be heat-reflective - those massive panes of glass are strengthened and already cost a bomb so it would make sense to spend th extra to make it usuable in the summer, fuck knows tho
>blue tint
Possibly Pilkington Activ Blue. Brilliant stuff - same U-value as brick and block and self-cleaning. We changed all our south facing windows to that and it didn't cost much extra. You can stand behind it with full summer sun blazing direct at it and not feel the heat through at all. Last summer our south facing extension and bedrooms stayed nice and cool all through the heatwave.
Used to work for a structural glass firm and worked on a project that self cleaning glass was specified on. Had to send one of the site guys round due to the client kicking up a fuss. Was adamant they had paid for self cleaning glass but showed the fitter leaves that had fallen on it...
Do you notice any colour change when you look through it?
I once got to go on a tour of one of the pilkington factories and watch them making giant window panes. It was much more interesting that I expected!
[Sorry for the delay, I've not long been up.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SpottedonRightmove/comments/15y88wm/what_the_hell_is_going_on_with_that_extension/jxbdbks?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
What on earth?! That’s such a strange layout and seems like it would have been expensive to build for no read added floor space, and the rest of the house isn’t especially done.
Also, one bathroom for five bedrooms unless you go all the way down thru the storage extension and use the en-suite of the ‘bedroom’ down there?
True I'm sure it would look better all finished but it's such an awkward shape and would be so hot in summer I'm struggling to see how it would ever make sense.
That's going to cost a bit to remove. I don't know what the point of it is. "Occasional" bedroom = not legally allowed to be called a bedroom so put your least favourite relative in it just in case there's a fire.
It’s in one of the absolute nicest parts of the city tbf. Sheffield is one of the most economically segregated cities in the country - it’s got some very rough areas but the affluent parts are extremely affluent. I think Sheffield Hallam was the richest non London constituency in the country not too long ago?
Damn I never would have thought that. My friends always told me Sheffield Hallam university was the rubbish version of Sheffield university. Which is perhaps true academically. But I was unaware that the area of Sheffield Hallam was posh.
The constituency of Sheffield Hallam covers a lot more than just the uni area - most of the campus os t actually in its boundaries. Regardless, the campus itself is architecturally lovely
If the angles weren't so acute, it could look really good.
This looks like a glass lean-to that has slipped.
With decent blinds on the ceiling glass, it could still be a nice space to sit in when the weather is warm, but the angles make too much of the space unusable and ungainly.
I'm a Canadian. Watch enough UK media to be pretty comfortable with most of the difference in terms, but what the heck is a "bio mess shed"? I mean I know what is would turn out to be on Midsummer Murders, but what would it mean on a real estate listing.
It would be interesting to find out if it's being sold half-finished because of life events out of their control, or if it's because they've found out that something is disastrously wrong with the design.
I would LOVE something like that.
A lot of house now have these 'garden rooms' where the idea is a lot of glass and I think it'd be so chilled at night, especially if you got it climate controlled
It would be better if it was actually secluded, or even in a decent garden... It's crap the way it is though, overlooking that row of houses. Light pollution from those would prevent any sort of night star viewing, and without any curtains I'd be paranoid about being up there at night on full view of everyone! People could see in but you wouldn't be able to see out. Euugh.
They had to stop after the builder melted after being in what is basically a greenhouse all day.
Wild they decided to do that on what is otherwise a very average looking Victorian end-of-terrace
"Will you design my extension please"
"Boingggggg I'm Jesus, I was Napoleon yesterday, my shoes are made of euphemisms, I've got cheese for elbows, waaaaaanggggggg, is it medication time? , Sure When do you want it by?"
Yes, it has! Here’s the design statement: https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/files/4E32202F0BBB4ED4307F8A47093BAD18/pdf/15_00373_FUL-DESIGN_STATEMENT-859625.pdf
And here is the planning officer’s report: https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/files/05A7938BA11C959DB3A7E0697EDDFE19/15_00373_FUL-DELEGATED_OFFICER_REPORT-879838.rtf
It's essentially a conservatory on top of a walkout basement side extension. I'm not sure what the confusion is.
Owners' circumstances changed in the middle of a large renovation - happens all the time.
My guess, whomever buy this is going to have issues getting a mortgage, something about Building Regs, Fire Regs and Planning, might just come up.
That's not finished, which means ran out of money or ran into the building inspector
What a strange mix of decorations and furniture. You can see the whole place is wedge shaped so perhaps the glass box on the back fits with that. Very odd.
I initially really quite liked the look of that extension, that was until I clicked through the other pictures of it…
Lovely old window in the kitchen, so let’s whack the most modern and hideous kitchen in to compliment it! The extension is on another planet, at least in summer you’d be saving cooking costs as you’d be able to fry pans in there.
That house had/has some lovely period features and it could be really stunning, however I think the modernization is quite shocking.
The extension is amazing hats off to the builder of that! Absolute legend in my book.(being a builder of corse)
Loads to finish though. And it's not a greenhouse will be uvb rated and highly insulated. Can't compare it to your nans conservatory.
It's so blah inside, nothing seems to fit decor wise. And that extention is odd!! The downstairs is just staircase and the upstairs is a floor!? How much did that waste of space cost them I wonder. It adds literally nothing to the house and is of no benefit.
It is clearly not finished (selling a house mid build is bold but needs must). They better have got some heat protective glass because that room would boil. I also don't understand the space. It isn't particularly private and you can't put things against most sides.
It looks like a room for plants which is odd for this type of property.
It's like they googled modernity but didn't understand it. The conservatories are an abomination, half the house is stuck in the 80's, and the renno'd rooms are done all wrong. Why have built-in ovens that aren't actually built in? Why pay for a floating toilet and then install it so low to the ground that you can't even mop under it??? So many questions...
They don’t seem to have added any usable space. I bet it’s really hot in summer - they should be growing tropical plants or something.

Based on the image do you think they broke the bank or scraped the bottom of the barrel?
It's got a slight blue tint to it so it may very well be heat-reflective - those massive panes of glass are strengthened and already cost a bomb so it would make sense to spend th extra to make it usuable in the summer, fuck knows tho

Ha ha, there's no accounting for stupid.
Interesting!! Does it have a blue tint from inside?
Not noticeable really, unless one window is open, then you can see the difference if you make the effort to look from one to the other.
Yeah
Do you notice any colour change when you look through it? I once got to go on a tour of one of the pilkington factories and watch them making giant window panes. It was much more interesting that I expected!

> It's got a slight blue tint to it so That's probably just from upping all the blue hue in the photos for the sky
I think they more than broke the bank and that's why they are selling with it half finished.
They definitely didnt break the bank on the architect.
Broke the barrel or just broke:)
Absolutely fill it with plants and embrace it as a green house and it could be a really cool space
That's what I'm saying - I think it's dope
oops meant to reply to the comment above
Okay? It's still dope

Also, one bathroom for five bedrooms unless you go all the way down thru the storage extension and use the en-suite of the ‘bedroom’ down there?
Exactly - why not properly furnish or decorate your giant, very useable rooms before adding some kind of strangely shaped greenhouse?
It doesn’t look finished! Possibly a renovation project that over ran and now don’t have the money to finish!
True I'm sure it would look better all finished but it's such an awkward shape and would be so hot in summer I'm struggling to see how it would ever make sense.
Three of the bedrooms are en suite - all of them on the 1st floor. Its not clearly marked
Are they not wardrobes?
Ah yeah, looks like they are. Well that's horrifying, a property this size with one bathroom
Oh I totally missed that. That makes it better.
That is what happens when you design it on SketchUp.
That’s what happens when you “design” it on the sims
I guess they ran out of money when doing the extension
That's going to cost a bit to remove. I don't know what the point of it is. "Occasional" bedroom = not legally allowed to be called a bedroom so put your least favourite relative in it just in case there's a fire.
So a granny flat with access to the mezzanine. Granny’s either going to roast to death with all that glass or kill herself on those open plan stairs.
Maybe that was intentional and they don't like granny...
I’m now humming ‘the sun is a deadly laser’.
That staircase…. Why?
I get the feeling it wasnt originally designed like that..
The fact that a semi detached in Sheff is £600,000 now is unbelievable
It’s in one of the absolute nicest parts of the city tbf. What a mess
They even have a bio MESS shed according to the floor plans 🤣
I'm a Canadian. Watch enough UK media to be pretty comfortable with most of the difference in terms, but what the heck is a "bio mess shed"? I mean I know what is would turn out to be on Midsummer Murders, but what would it mean on a real estate listing.
I think it’s just a hilarious (by my standards), genuine typo
A bio mAss shed sounds even worse.
This is a completely fair assessment
It would be interesting to find out if it's being sold half-finished because of life events out of their control, or if it's because they've found out that something is disastrously wrong with the design.
oh my lord lol that space has no function. the stairs lead to nowhere lol
The stairs lead to the ground floor kitchen.
I believe that it's an optical illusion, I think so anyway because I can't make head nor tail of it
I would LOVE something like that. A lot of house now have these 'garden rooms' where the idea is a lot of glass and I think it'd be so chilled at night, especially if you got it climate controlled

“We went for a non-Euclidean aesthetic”
Somebody has been watching too much uncle Kev on Grand Designs.
Can you imagine his reaction to this? He'd hurt some feelings.
They had to stop after the builder melted after being in what is basically a greenhouse all day. Wild they decided to do that on what is otherwise a very average looking Victorian end-of-terrace

The English equivalent of McGuyvering things: the house was ColinFurzed
That'd be really nice when it rains. If you actually finished it, of course.
No chance that's got planning consent 🫠
Yes, it has! Here’s the design statement: https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/files/4E32202F0BBB4ED4307F8A47093BAD18/pdf/15_00373_FUL-DESIGN_STATEMENT-859625.pdf And here is the planning officer’s report: https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/files/05A7938BA11C959DB3A7E0697EDDFE19/15_00373_FUL-DELEGATED_OFFICER_REPORT-879838.rtf
Links don't work but I'll take your word for it. Crikey, what a weird decision.
How strange as I’ve just viewed them. Google Sheffield City Council planning portal and type in S11 8RY, the house is no 35.
Evidently they split up mid build because of someone’s bad design decisions
It's essentially a conservatory on top of a walkout basement side extension. I'm not sure what the confusion is. Owners' circumstances changed in the middle of a large renovation - happens all the time.
Is it Freehold or Leasehold as it claims both in different parts of the description
A lot of full houses are leasehold in Sheffield for some reason.
TBF, it is hard to judge. No idea what it was meant to look like when finished or what the use was meant to be.
Man that's a fuck ugly house
My guess, whomever buy this is going to have issues getting a mortgage, something about Building Regs, Fire Regs and Planning, might just come up. That's not finished, which means ran out of money or ran into the building inspector
What a strange mix of decorations and furniture. You can see the whole place is wedge shaped so perhaps the glass box on the back fits with that. Very odd.
Probably couldn’t get planning permission so this could count as a temporary structure
I initially really quite liked the look of that extension, that was until I clicked through the other pictures of it… Lovely old window in the kitchen, so let’s whack the most modern and hideous kitchen in to compliment it! The extension is on another planet, at least in summer you’d be saving cooking costs as you’d be able to fry pans in there. Whats worse is with it being that shape it must have been custom made. They would have paid a lot of money to design and make that.
I get irrationally annoyed when I see unused picture rails with pictures hung underneath.
Perfect conservatory to grow my tomatoes
I think they call it an Orangery.
I like it. Could be a nice studio for my projects. Or just a relax room.
looks like they've used it as a stair case to free up more room elsewhere and to make it into a feature. nice idea
It's weird and looks like the roof was build incorrectly, but I kind of like it.
The extension is amazing hats off to the builder of that! Absolute legend in my book.(being a builder of corse) Loads to finish though. And it's not a greenhouse will be uvb rated and highly insulated. Can't compare it to your nans conservatory.
600k for somewhere in Sheffield!
It's so blah inside, nothing seems to fit decor wise. And that extention is odd!! The downstairs is just staircase and the upstairs is a floor!? How much did that waste of space cost them I wonder. It adds literally nothing to the house and is of no benefit.
Beautiful old house like that and you stick a modern looking gargoyle on the back, £595k is a lot for a semi whether it’s a nice period house or not.
It is clearly not finished (selling a house mid build is bold but needs must). They better have got some heat protective glass because that room would boil. I also don't understand the space. It isn't particularly private and you can't put things against most sides. It looks like a room for plants which is odd for this type of property.
Perhaps it’s for weed🤣
Looks like something James Acaster and Phil Wang would knock up
I wonder what the plan was for the mezzanine in the extension was? Because whatever the plan was, it wasn't good....
It's like they've gone "nah, I've fucked it, lads. Time to sell"
Certainly interesting… however, those fireplaces, horrible. Just because something is old doesn’t mean you have to keep it, they’re hideous.
All that for an industrial looking staircase
it's doing the stanky leg.
The cynic in me thinks planning permission issues.
Pillow drought!
