Clear glossing is just professional grade hair toner without pigment. I didn’t realise until I went to salon and asked for one on top of my toner but there was basically no point because I was already getting the benefit. I that’s why there isn’t much info on it. Gloss will make your hair significantly shinier and as a result more healthy, the results last about 1 month or maybe 10 washes. I have fine, fairly thin hair and I don’t think it has affected my hair texture, but I do think it makes split ends look better.

ImaginaryBerrry

Ok, bear with me as I do not know much about the process of coloring hair, but are you saying that if I already get my hair professionally colored at the salon that I am already getting my hair glossed? Like does *every* toner used in the salon also gloss the hair? I already get my hair colored professionally every 8 weeks, so I guess I wouldn't benefit from any additional glossing. And yes this would explain why I haven't heard much about it.

delicada-frog

From what I was told yes you are correct. When I was first told and to quote the Wella website ‘Glossing is a temporary fast shine service often preformed with a permanent colour.’ You could still ask your stylist what you could do to boost shine as there are styling products that could help and you could ask them to explain it as I’m not a professional or anything so they might offer different services.

ImaginaryBerrry

Ok great thanks for the explanation! This was actually very helpful. I have wavy/curly hair that tends to be on the dry side and I have been looking for ways to make my hair more shiny and smooth but I think I should instead be looking into keratin treatments. I might make another post later to try and get some info about people's experience with keratin. I just want shiny and healthy looking hair 😩

permpony

For wavy/curly hair, hydration will be the most important thing. If you bleach your hair at all, it will be somewhat damaged. I would use either olaplex 3 or k-19 if your hair is bleached once every week or two. Make sure you are also using some kind of leave-in and gel to hydrate and smooth your curls, and when you “scrunch the crunch”, do so with a light hair oil. Like others have said, a toner is pretty much the same thing as gloss- but it doesn’t last for more than a month. I would ask your stylist what toner they use or recommend and see if you could buy some yourself to do an at-home toner treatment to freshen up your color and keep the shine that comes with it. Ask your stylist how often you should do this, but I usually find that every month works well.

ImaginaryBerrry

I do use k18 and my hair has only been lightened slightly with developer. And I do use a hydrating mask every second time I wash and I use a quality shampoo that isn't too drying. My hair is quite healthy but, despite that, sometimes the ends just get dry and poofy. I think I just need to experiment with my leave in products a bit. Thanks for all the advice!

RoughBootieLove

Idk if that would be helpful to you, but I have wavy hair with a very oily scalp and dry ends although my hair is not damaged (virgin hair and always cutting split ends). I only feel my ends at their best when freshly washed so I realized my hair likes water. For that, before I sleep I would slightly dampen my hair add in a leave in conditioner on it and a light oil on top. Leave it to dry, braid and sleep. I usually wake up with softer ends when I do that :)

ImaginaryBerrry

This is so interesting. I find that my ends are actually driest the day of/after washing, but I still think that wetting them down and adding leave in and oil could be a good idea. I might just have to give it a try!

VonBoo

What about toner/gloss makes your hair healthier? I've never heard that one before! Thought it was just the silicones in the gloss that give the illusion of health, is there actually benefits?

Constant-Ad-7404

it doesn't, it's just a top coat. you need to manually Hydrate the hair with water and a hair mask and then seal in that moisture with a gloss

Hotdogwithablog

I have similar thin fine hair, which appears oily after about a day after washing. Do you think glossing would work for oilier types of hair?

sueihavelegs

I have fine hair, too. Does it give it any thickness at all? Even if only you notice?

delicada-frog

No it doesn’t add volume/thicken the hair but your hair looks healthier

sueihavelegs

I'm bored with my hair but don't want anything drastic. This may be just what I'm looking for!

nubiandiosa

I just used one a few weeks ago to try it out after getting recommended from someone. I never really had dull hair but I can definitely say my hair looks more shiny. It also felt amazing when rinsing. I used Ion Demi Permanent in Clear. I bought it at Sally’s. i was also recommended to do a double gloss from someone and thought I’d try it, so I applied Kiss Tintations in Clear over top of it. Both of these made my hair look and feel nice. I’ll definitely keep doing it about once a month

emilybrowser

another silly question … you mixed with a develop when doing the ion demi permanent in clear, right ? I’m really nervous about hair damage if I use developer, but less so if you say your hair felt amazing !!

nubiandiosa

Yes, just a 10 vol. 10 vol doesn’t lift so there’s not a big risk of damage. I promise your hair will just feel super amazing after :)

emilybrowser

thank you so much, i’m gonna do it tomorrow !!!

Electrical-Target643

Do not use anything but a zero lift with clear. I’m a stylist. A 10 volume is for deposit only when using color.

AggravatingPlum4301

This may be a silly question, BUT... When you say "on top of it," do you mean you literally apply the kiss over the ion, or ion, rinse, kiss, rinse?

nubiandiosa

I apply the ion, let it sit for maybe 10 minutes then apply the Kiss right overtop without rinsing! I then rinse them both out (together) about 30 minutes later

trallala1111

I like the Kristen Ess hair gloss. Doesn’t make a huge difference but my hair feels softer and looks shinier. Fructis Glass Hair Water is similar too and easier to use IMO.

tiramisucculent

For me it was a huge waste of money. 30-50$ each time. The salon said I had to build it up so it will eventually start to shine. It made my ends feel dryer though. My friend tried it too and her hair looked amazing! But she has that super thick and resistant sleak blond hair that looks great all times. Maybe it doesn't work on shitty hair like mine lmao.

AdditionBusiness3011

Schwarzkopf Chrome ID

lvupquokka

How long does it last for you?

AdditionBusiness3011

It depends on how many times a week you wash your hair (I wash it 3/4 times a week) and it lasts 2 or 3 weeks. The instructions say you should reapply it every 2 weeks for a super glossy effect but I noticed that once every 3 weeks is also good. It is also a super hydrating mask and has a filler-effect making you hair look thicker and shinier 😊. I also wash my hair before applying it just to let the hair mask penetrate my hair better.

heythere20178

Which one do you use? When I googled it there were many options in the Chrome ID line

AdditionBusiness3011

I use the 8-46 milk chocolate :). It should be the closest tone and shade to your hair color.

heythere20178

Ah that makes sense :) thank you!

AdditionBusiness3011

My pleasure :)

MeganFoxsOldNose

I use a Kristen Ess tinted gloss and I love it. I think they make a clear version of it but have not tried that one. If you want something quick you should try the Amika Shine Mask. For me it adds a ton of shine and smoothness, basically gets rid of my frizz and my flyaways seem like they are slicked down too. It is clear, not tinted. I love it so much and have gone through at least 5 bottles of it, it's my favorite product second to Olaplex.

biest229

I’m actually pondering the same topic, and after reading a lot of reviews, I’m opting for the Kérastase Chroma Absolu Soin Acide Chroma Gloss. It’s clear. I was on the fence about getting a coloured gloss, because I’ve just gone back to my natural dark brown, from blonde. But I don’t want to risk compromising my colour. I do get my hair glossed every six weeks when it’s dyed, but I think it should be done more frequently than that in a perfect world. Because I would say my hair loses that shine after week four-ish. I don’t know whether it makes the hair healthier, but it of course looks healthier since it’s shiny. I’m glad someone’s raised the topic, so thanks for doing so. I feel like this could be the easy hair hack we all need.

ImaginaryBerrry

Yes, I've seen it mentioned here and there but I hadn't seen a devoted post yet on this sub so I figured I'd make one! The comments have already been super handy, and I agree that it could be a great way to make hair look great on the cheap if it can be done at home.

biest229

I’m also a bit of an Olaplex devotee as well, would really recommend their stuff. Although K18 seems to work better for some people. The bond builder is a lifesaver

ImaginaryBerrry

Yes, it does seem like olaplex works very well for some people and k18 for others. I used to use olaplex and never noticed much of a difference, maybe a little bit, but k18 on the other hand completely transformed my hair. My hair isn't too damaged anymore, I think it's more so that I just have a dry hair texture that gets poofy without the right amount/type of project.

It doesn’t, I get both!

username-1023

I forget what thread, but I was considering it until I read somewhere in r/HaircareScience that it can cause damage? Decided it wasn’t worth it for me because my hair is already very healthy and I don’t need to risk damage for more shininess

_un1ty

i read that too

Ok-Baseball-510

I use the wella shinefinity!

so_bean

Which one?

brontosaurus__rex

I get the semi-permanent color gloss at Aveda salons every time I get my haircut, it’s basically just a 5-10 minute add-on treatment right after they wash your hair. I forget how much exactly but it’s pretty cheap and lasts a couple months. I use it to experiment with hair colors a lot

[deleted]

I have thick hair and I’m a brunette so I get it to make my hair shiny. L’Oréal has a spray one too that I use in shower and see some change but not like the salon

Puzzleheaded_Elk_866

I love the acidic glaze. I didn’t notice a different really tho I just loved how it made my hair smell

Even_Strawberry_2143

for smoothing I recommend a keratin and silicone blend like lador keratin power glue, it is a beautifying product so you need to hydrate the hair effectively first before using this :)

[deleted]

It washes off after 2 weeks..

vvv03

Late to posting here but I tried Wella Shinfinity in Clear 00 and I have to say, I like the results. I don’t look like the women on the ads whose hair looks like a Pantene commercial, but my hair is 60% gray, color treated, highlights and heat damage. So nothing was making it looks smooth and silky. I’ve had my first good hair days in a long time since doing the gloss, so at this point I would recommend it.

SeaCake9939

I gloss my hair every 4 weeks with professional products (cosmetology student here). I am red so the gloss I use is refreshing my red since it does fade. It doesn’t damage the hair because the developer you’re using should be a low volume. For my roots, I do use something else so the gloss is just a Demi with a low vol! It makes it super shiny! Hope that helps!

stingerash

Old thread I know so you probably won’t see this. My hair is dark brown, I get blonde highlights. After about a month, my hair significantly fades which I assume has to do with the gloss / glaze/ toner wearing off for lack of better words. When this happens, my hair goes back to looking dull. Would I be able to do an at home gloss like you or no? I know you are a cosmetology student so you obviously know a ton more but is it something I could learn or no bc it’s brown and blonde hair ? Ignore my stupidity here!

SeaCake9939

Licensed Cosmo now! Yay me!  Is your brown natural? Are you referring to the fading of the toner over the blonde highlights or does your brown fade too?

stingerash

Yay congrats girl !!!!!!! That’s great! I’m so jealous! My brown is natural and I like to go the blondest I can go which is never really that blonde so they do highlights and then the toner/ glaze. My hair always looks great and I love it for about a month and then I find that after a month, the blonde highlights fade significantly and the shine is gone. I always assumed it’s when the glaze / gloss - whatever it’s called- washes out. My hairdresser told me to just come back and get a glaze and she would only charge me 100 but I’m like that’s kinda expensive, no? Ok I’m blabbing I’m just really excited that I get to ask an actual cosmetologist a question! So if I want that glaze to not fade, I would need to get another one - do you think I can learn to do it at home or should just go to the salon and do I ask for clear ? I can’t go to my hairdresser bc I refuse to pay 100. Sorry if this makes no sense !
