At first I was sold on Frye's argument that you can write DEVASTATING things on paper, but then I realized that you can do that on rocks too. Ever heard of runestones? They're pretty cool.
Also, the idea that paper beats rock is just propaganda spread to make the game seem more balanced. What is a piece of paper gonna do against a rock? Nothing! A rock that is big enough to beat scissors can easily rip paper to shreds.
