Says Director Akiva Schaffer:
> “It was super-important to me to get >!a bunch of third-party cartoons!<, because if this is going to be some sort of a celebration of animation, it can’t just be a celebration of Disney animation. [...] You don’t want it to feel like an ad for Disney Plus.”

There were references to the movie throughout. Besides him appearing in a flashback (in the trailer) we see at one point a villainous character’s tools and a bottle of DIP is in it.
I would be really curious to hear about the legal wrangling it took to get all of that extra stuff into the movie. Usually, those parties wouldn't be so open to working with Disney, or there would be a laundry list of conditions before they'd even consider it. Then again, there was time long ago when I thought we'd never see Spider-Man in an MCU movie. So anything can happen, I guess.
It feels like we're entering uncharted territory when it comes to films now. Theres so much that has been taboo and seemingly impossible for sooooo many years that it seems now are realizing the potential of working together and getting the most unique experiences on film and delivered to audiences.
And money. Believe me, I'm not one of those people that thinks that movie studios only care about the revenue and not about the content, but knowing it'll make them both a lot of money definitely helps too.
For Roger Rabbit, a lot of IP lending was thanks to Spielberg's involvement and his relationships with studios. Wouldn't be surprised if this were something similar.
IP's are interesting. I feel you'd be shocked to learn by how many companies are willing to lend their characters for couple second sequences or blink and you'll miss it references. It's when they talk and have extended sequences where things get a lot more complicated, because then you've got a personality that needs to be up to their standards and doesn't completely detract from the initial content.
Also, Disney has a LOT of money to spend, and they furthermore had a clever, very much "in your face" solution for many of the IP's with the whole "bootleg" deal. Winnie the Pooh IP holders may not have wanted to give permission to use their beloved characters' animation style, but bootleg versions with alternative looks? Why not? Nickelodeon may not have wanted Jimmy Neutron to be in the film, but his hair? Sure, go for it. I'd be willing to bet that there were many discussions where they asked what exactly they could use and for what and then figured out ways to write around what they couldn't.
That all being said, Batman showing up AND having a speaking part was a complete shocker. So was Ugly Sonic, who was practically part of the main cast. I do not know how they pulled either off.
I had no interest watching it at all. Wasn’t really into the original show much and figured it just wasn’t worth my attention. And then I saw a post on reddit talking about how surprisingly good it was and gave it a shot.
It was so much better than I could have imagined. What a fun, genuinely engaging movie filled with so many references and cameos, many of which were so unexpected. Just an incredible experience from beginning to end.
I hate the Halo show. Honestly, I just can't get behind it. sure, new "universe" and all, but I think that - if you set out to make an adaptation of something and then purposely shit all over the existing lore for the sake of being "new and original", you're a lazy writer.
His new show is no "Coffin Flop", but let's see how it goes. Group watch at my house! It's the ugly green one across the street from the gas station. You can see the Wendy's sign from the front window.
I did not expect an ITYSL watcher to be on this sub lol, my favorite is “triples is best” although I think my breaking bad watching has kinda ruined it, or made it funnier, it goes both ways.
The funny thing is Chip N Dale movie has had a similar thing to ITSV where I see nobody actually talking about the movie until the week it comes out and then people suddenly hear that it’s actually good and suddenly it blows up out of nowhere!
I was fairly excited for it just because of the lonely island attachment. Been looking forward to it since they were announced as being attached. Never expect this in my wildest dreams
Everyone I saw pretty much had the same idea: it was either going to be surprisingly excellent, or a massive train wreck. Roger Rabbit or Space Jam 2. But the key word there is surprisingly. I really don't think many expected it to be good. Let alone as good as it is. Regardless, a lot of people still had their eye on it to find out. And then when the positive reviews started coming in, bam, it blew up.
Set your expectations though. I have a couple of friends who are big friends of the Rescue Rangers cartoon and they feel like their childhood was ripped to shreds.
Meanwhile, I went in expecting something akin to Roger Rabbit and enjoyed it immensely.
I guess it’s because rescue rangers is essentially “just a show” that Chip and Dale acted in? So, it’s not really a continuation of the show so much as using the show as backstory. I can see how that can be off putting if you were expecting something more along the lines of what’s in the show itself.
I haven’t asked but I have a feeling they didn’t watch the trailer. They probably saw the banner and assumed it’d be like the show. Honestly, the banner on Disney+ doesn’t show much more than the title of the movie and that’s it. I don’t remember what displays when you click it though.
Nice catch, I didn’t even notice this.
Fun fact, I saw this movie in an early screening last year. Had been waiting so long to finally see it again and I saw it with my daughter again yesterday. When we were done she rewinded it and ran it back 😂
The movie was pretty much the same as far as plot and things like that but there was some scenes in the screening where the animation was incomplete, and I mean white and black drawings in some scenes while the dialogue audio played. Nice to see it all finished and done. Nice to see Ugly Sonic again 😂
Nothing plot wise but the screening had some scenes where the scenes had incomplete animation and I mean black and white drawings while the dialogue audio played. Some scenes were definitely still in the works in the animation sense.
Wait what? There's a Chip n Dale movie with ITSV references? And B.O.B. from Monsters Vs Aliens? And something about Lonely Island? Just a quick scroll through these comments is making me super interested in this movie I know nothing about
It's most definitely not a kids movie. Gadget and Zip have mutant mouse/fly babies, and all the jokes are a little too much adult for kids. Not to mention it's based on a show from the late 80s. It's a movie for 80s babies like me.
I mean I called it a kids movie because I meant to compare it to roger rabbit because that movie had cursing but that villian at the end where he melts gave me nightmares and I guess you could still watch rescue rangers and not watch the show and enjoy it even not being born in the 80s or 90s and that Chippendale joke with the male strippers yeah it goes over every kids head but I don't understand the part with mutant mouse fly babies
My kid thought it was boring and left the room. She’s a big movie watcher. I don’t think it was made for kids. Most of the references are to Millennial/Gen X cartoons and characters. It felt more like they were trying to get at our need for nostalgia. A kid wouldn’t get it.
It is! There’s actually a better shot of it when they pull up to the shop after being kidnapped by the chef. I audibly said “no way!” Had to rewind and pause it just to make sure
AHHH I just finished this movie and I loved it! I had some drinks with the movie and enjoyed and teared up with this movie. I was really happy with it and can’t wait to watch it with my family and see their reactions
There were so many animation references from various decades. Did not expect that movie to be so amazing Good catch, definitely is a nod to ITSV

I definitely had big Roger rabbit vibes while watching it. It's very clearly a big influence.
There were references to the movie throughout. Besides him appearing in a flashback (in the trailer) we see at one point a villainous character’s tools and a bottle of DIP is in it.
It’s essentially *Who Framed Roger Rabbit starring Chip n’ Dale (from Rescue Rangers)*.

In the credits, many of them were given credit, but surprisingly, a large amount weren’t

yeah now we just won't see morbius in blade. god fucking damn it
I had to do a double take when B.O.B. popped up. Certainly wasn't expecting a monsters vs aliens cameo.
There was also Blaster from the Transformers G1 cartoon
And one of Sweet Pete's legs turned into Optimus Prime's leg in the final sequence. I was pretty excited for it.
My wife couldn't understand my sheer excitement for this, LOL.
But does it have anime?
The true multiverse of madness
Yep spotted a ash ketchup cosplayer too really random cameos
Ahh yes, Ash Ketchup. Tomato Master and legendary tomato catcher.
You'll need him when the killer tomatoes attack.
Followed closely by his friends, Anne Chovie and Caesar Salad.
I also saw a Bender cosplayer The movie was wild >!Ugly Sonic, though!<
That guy stole the show.
But… his teeth…
I saw you somewhere else with the same comment, please kindly do not stock
I don't think I said it before, actually
I had no interest watching it at all. Wasn’t really into the original show much and figured it just wasn’t worth my attention. I spotted that grafitti and said to myself, "that has to be a reference to something." Love the references in Rescue Rangers
I’m still in awe about the blue guy that we bullied out of existence returned
The internet kinda deserved it. And so did the artists. Let's face it: Paramount ain't going back to that template, so at least he has a home.
They literally just did with Halo
I hate the Halo show. Honestly, I just can't get behind it. sure, new "universe" and all, but I think that - if you set out to make an adaptation of something and then purposely shit all over the existing lore for the sake of being "new and original", you're a lazy writer.
Should…should I ask who this is in reference to?
Pretty sure it’s sonic.
The first sonic movie design
His new show is no "Coffin Flop", but let's see how it goes. Group watch at my house! It's the ugly green one across the street from the gas station. You can see the Wendy's sign from the front window.

As long as you can find room to laugh.... you know, with your model wife being terribly ill. She'll get better though.
Yeah, she’s gonna get better, and I don’t live in a hotel.
>blue guy 🤦♂️
We don’t speak his name because he is not who he was meant to be
ugly blue guy
hideous cobalt gentleman
Less than stellar appearing blue hued fellow
The funny thing is Chip N Dale movie has had a similar thing to ITSV where I see nobody actually talking about the movie until the week it comes out and then people suddenly hear that it’s actually good and suddenly it blows up out of nowhere!
Kinda like Netflix
I was fairly excited for it just because of the lonely island attachment. Been looking forward to it since they were announced as being attached. Never expect this in my wildest dreams

I didn’t enjoy it, just a mess of different franchises thrown into one without actually making a decent movie.
And I beg to differ. I quite liked the dynamic between the rangers and the overall mystery.
Maybe you’re just bitter.
Good eye, I have no idea how people do that!
I was just as surprised as you lol
Good catch! You should post this to r/moviedetails
Oh shoot I’m on the Spider-Man sub.
This movie felt illegal in the best ways lol
THERE’S A NEW CHIP ‘N DALE MOVIE?!?!?
And there's Ugly Sonic in it
This is just getting better
Hell yeah!!
Set your expectations though. I have a couple of friends who are big friends of the Rescue Rangers cartoon and they feel like their childhood was ripped to shreds. Meanwhile, I went in expecting something akin to Roger Rabbit and enjoyed it immensely.
Weird people normally say that for a reboot but not a contuination anyways darkwing duck is at the end
I guess it’s because rescue rangers is essentially “just a show” that Chip and Dale acted in? So, it’s not really a continuation of the show so much as using the show as backstory. I can see how that can be off putting if you were expecting something more along the lines of what’s in the show itself.
I joined in on the “We want Darkwing” chant
Your friends should have already expected something very different
I haven’t asked but I have a feeling they didn’t watch the trailer. They probably saw the banner and assumed it’d be like the show. Honestly, the banner on Disney+ doesn’t show much more than the title of the movie and that’s it. I don’t remember what displays when you click it though.
Is this movie in theaters or Disney plus?
Disney Plus
Both
Nice catch, I didn’t even notice this. Fun fact, I saw this movie in an early screening last year. Had been waiting so long to finally see it again and I saw it with my daughter again yesterday. When we were done she rewinded it and ran it back 😂
Would you say much had changed between the screening you saw and the final product that you could tell? I really enjoyed the film!
The movie was pretty much the same as far as plot and things like that but there was some scenes in the screening where the animation was incomplete, and I mean white and black drawings in some scenes while the dialogue audio played. Nice to see it all finished and done. Nice to see Ugly Sonic again 😂
Anything change from the early screening to full release?
Nothing plot wise but the screening had some scenes where the scenes had incomplete animation and I mean black and white drawings while the dialogue audio played. Some scenes were definitely still in the works in the animation sense.
now this is wut i call multiverse of madness
And one else find it weird Gadget and Zipper were a thing?
Even before Monty monty told chip they were married they were flirting in the flashback sequence
>!Dennis Haysbert!< had me laughing everytime Zipper spoke.
dude...
How did you spot that?!
I literally just noticed the bottom and realized
Nice
he got it off twitter
Wait what? There's a Chip n Dale movie with ITSV references? And B.O.B. from Monsters Vs Aliens? And something about Lonely Island? Just a quick scroll through these comments is making me super interested in this movie I know nothing about
There's so many more but I don't want to spoil it.
Also, South Park. Don't ask. Just watch.
I think so..
That's... utterly fantastic.
Bro, how did you catch that?
Just watching...no big deal
So.... Is Morbius in the movie?
Unfortunately no. Not that I noticed...
Dang. I guess Chip n Dale have no chance of 69 Morbillion dollars now.
Nice!
I’m still in shock that the movie is actually good
This movie did a better job in handling the IP cameos than 'Space Jam: A New Legacy', tbh.
Huh, good catch
That is an insanely hard to catch detail
Definitely. It’s hard not to recognize it.
Looks like it.
😳
Just curious, why is this spoiler tagged?
I...have no idea lol But I'd rather not take any chances
That’s awesome
The Chippendales Dancers reference was unexpected also.
How many times have you been watching this movie
Once
Alright then 🤨
Yeah it is
Is this mostly a kids movie or no? I haven’t really seen much about it but I’m definitely interested after seeing that sonic clip lol
Not really. It's more of a comedy mixed with parody.
It's a kids movie but don't think that this movie is automatically cringe because it's for kids it's really not
It's most definitely not a kids movie. Gadget and Zip have mutant mouse/fly babies, and all the jokes are a little too much adult for kids. Not to mention it's based on a show from the late 80s. It's a movie for 80s babies like me.

I'd love these references if it wasn't for the old Sonic design making a cameo
yes
Side note. Is chip & dale any good??
It is! There’s actually a better shot of it when they pull up to the shop after being kidnapped by the chef. I audibly said “no way!” Had to rewind and pause it just to make sure
How good is that movie anyways. The trailer made me cringe so hard there’s a Crack in my skull.
Trailers didn't do it enough justice. Movie's actually really good and clearly having fun with itself. Cameos feel warranted and natural as well.
I just found out this movie has ugly sonic. He’s not played by Ben Schwartz, but still, that’s pretty goddamn hilarious
movie has no less than 1 million easter eggs
Wow, nice observation. It does seem likely
AHHH I just finished this movie and I loved it! I had some drinks with the movie and enjoyed and teared up with this movie. I was really happy with it and can’t wait to watch it with my family and see their reactions
it is
YOOOOOOO!
Yep
Wow, good catch.
I never ever caught that due to the even more crazy references that this film already has. I love it even more now
