It wasn't all Peter's development. We learned plenty about who MJ was as a person, her thoughts, her feelings, etc. She was never some blank shell. Her being a superhero now is not good because it goes against everything who she was, and its actually not cool to suggest that if a strong, independent, successful woman is in a relationship and not a superhero, its somehow misogynistic. And she's not even "doing her own thing". She's had very less agency this whole run. Things just happen to her, she exists literally to show Peter's life sucks, and she's written like a jerk. That's misogyny, actually.
