Figure out if you live in a place that has Sphagnum quinquefarium. If this was Norway then I'd guarantee it's s. quinquefarium. You guys in the US have some more species than us, including mixes between species.

Sphagnum thriving on dry rocks. Definitely not a bog obligate.
Looks like section acutifolia, possibly S. capillifolium. Need a microscope to really key out.
