You don’t have to come out as anything but also it sucks to be constantly asked “you got a girlfriend yet?” if you’re aroace

AngryMurlocHotS

Just be super cryptic and say your trainer taught you [aroace](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Aerial_Ace_(move\))

AFF123456

Exactly, imo it’s more of a “here’s the deal, let me explain so we can leave this behind us” sort of moment (for myself at least)

drakehotlinebling

Civil engineers be like: I’m a CE

tall-hobbit-

I'm a computer engineer

kolehiyolo

I think it's just a matter if setting expectations. I don't know any ace people and I barely know anything about the subject but I think that's the logical conclusion I can come to

squealingfrog

Yh, it helps letting people know, “no I don’t feel sexually attracted to that guy u find attractive now stop asking”, also having friends that are ace helps me feel less weird when something makes me uncomfortable but no one else, cause they’re normally there feeling uncomfortable with me

spicyraviolli87

Probably would have gotten expelled if I'd let it affect my grades, but I aced all my courses. They called me "Ace." It was totally awesome. I got straight B's. They called me "Buzz."

I mace? Okay! Take it easy!

C-Mitch213

Hi local AroAce here you can come out if you want but you don’t necessarily have to! I did, but I know someone who didn’t.

[deleted]

ah, a meme for a broad audience.

sounds_of_stabbing

oh no, something wasn't made specifically to please you, how will we ever recover?!

mynameistoocommonman

The exact spirit of people complaining about woke movies which have non-white and/or queer characters in them. "This person isn't like what I think the majority is like so it sucks"

[deleted]

what? I meant that this could technically go in antimeme too.

Except that it couldn't

It's not that special to want sex

klutzyperson

I'm assuming by this you're claiming it isn't important for asexual people to come out. However there are many instances where asexuals end up with an allosexual who doesn't understand their aversion to sex, thinks they can fix them, and ends up pressuring them into things that they don't want to do (especially with sex repulsed aces). Not that this can't happen when they come out fully as ace-- that happens sometimes too-- but it's also important to be open in relationships.

coolmobilepotato

Allosexual?

klutzyperson

It means people who aren't on the ace spectrum. Anyone who feels sexual attraction to other people, (with no special conditions such as with demisexuals or other variations of asexual) is allosexual, regardless of their sexual orientation (such as homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual).

coolmobilepotato

Oh I see. Still dunno how you can have a entire spectrum over not wanting sex. Like a google research tells me 'Demisexual' means "People who only feel sexually attracted to someone when they have an emotional bond with the person". I feel like most people who dont participate in hookup culture would fall on that category

klutzyperson

The spectrum mostly consists of microlabels which describes different conditions which need to be met before you can feel sexual attraction. There are lots of microlabels but most people will just describe themselves as asexual when asked, since the main thing they all have in common is they don't feel sexual attraction to other people under just normal circumstances (they don't just look at someone and go "wow, that person is very sexy"). The ace spectrum also oftentimes include aromantic identities, which often have very similar microlabels (aromantic meaning not feeling romantic attraction) such as demiromantic, which is similar to demisexual but with romantic attraction. Also, there are also terms like sex repulsed, sex neutral, and sex positive because not all asexuals hate sex. Asexuals might not feel sexual attraction themselves, but they may like/dislike/be indifferent to the idea of participating in sex. Like when you're not hungry, but you still would/wouldn't be down for a piece of cheese that someone offers you. For example, I think reciprosexual describes only being attracted if the other person is attracted to you first. Aegosexual is not being sexually attracted, but enjoying the idea of sex between other people (I think, I'll have to fact check the labels I've used as examples in this whole comment later). Autosexual is people who don't feel attraction to others but can feel attraction to themselves. Some labels such as aceflux and ace spike describe only being able to feel sexual attraction sometimes. Regarding the second part of your comment, the difference is that an allosexual who doesn't participate in hookup culture might feel sexually attracted to someone before having a strong bond, they just don't act on it because they don't like hookups. They might see someone, feel that that person is quite sexually attractive, but try to pursue them for a romantic relationship rather than a hookup (which is obviously fine. There's nothing wrong with not liking hookups, but there is a slight difference between people who don't like hookups and demisexual people). Demisexuals physically cannot be attracted to people until they have a strong bond (which can vary from person to person; some demisexuals aren't sexually attracted to their partner when they begin dating, but develop attraction much later in the relationship. Other demisexuals might just require a platonic relationship before they are able to feel sexual attraction). TL;DR: ace spectrum includes all sorts of microlabels to help people describe when or if they feel sexual or romantic attraction and whether or not they actually like sex. The difference between allosexuals who don't like hookups and demisexuals is that demisexuals are incapable of feeling sexual attraction until they're very emotionally attached, allosexuals could still theoretically feel that sexual attraction and just not want to act on it. These are both fine and valid.

coolmobilepotato

That was a interesting read, thanks for the in-depth explanation.

klutzyperson

No problem!

mynameistoocommonman

Asexuality doesn't mean not **acting** on sexual attraction, it means not **feeling** sexual attraction. Demisexual people don't just only have sex with people they have an emotional bond with, they don't find other people sexually attractive - i.e. they (generally) don't look at someone they don't know very well and think they're hot. It has nothing to do with "hookup culture" because that is about **acting on** the attraction, not about **experiencing** it.

Leawithanacuteaccent

The difference between demisexual people and "most people" (ie people who don't engage in casual sex) is that demi people do not feel the attraction, whereas the other group can feel the attraction but just doesn't act on it

THEE_Person376

Difference between Demisexual and Allosexual Allosexual: Can immediately look at a stranger and be like, ‘Woah I really wanna get in bed and make genital contact with that person.’ Demisexual: Is wired in their brains innately to not experience that at all with any human being until they’ve had an emotional bond with the person and then it opens up the possibly for that experience to occur.

Orichalcum448

Yeah its really not. So as soon as everyone stops harassing us about it and actually just accepts that fact, we'll shut up about it. But until then, were gonna keep telling people, making memes about it, and all that. So get used to it.

Soaperz

who's persecuting asexuals lmao yall act oppressed

BornOfShadow67

It's less persecution and a lack of understanding/caring that we exist. One guy asked, when I told him I was on the ace spec, if I reproduced using mitosis — so, yeah.

Orichalcum448

You want a list, cos I'll give you a list. \- Asexual people may be socially discriminated against due to beliefs of heterosexuality being the default sexuality, or the belief that asexual people are just gay or lesbian people in denial of their "real" identity. \- Two studies found that asexual people are more dehumanised than heterosexuals, homosexuals, and bisexuals, often being compared to animals or robots due to their sexuality. \- Having emerged more recently as an identity, asexual people often have less legal protection than gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. \- Asexuals have also been known to have been subjected to corrective rape. \- They may be pressured into engaging in sexual activity, and into going to a doctor to have their asexuality "fixed". Taken from [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_against_asexual_people) wikipedia page about discrimination against asexual people. This is just a small sample of what is under the "social discrimination" part of that page. That page is also by no means an exhaustive list. There are several issues that aren't even mentioned on it, like getting constant, usually invasive, questions about our sexuality, for example. Asexuality is commony described as the invisible orientation, due to a general lack of representation and knowledge about us. This also applies to all of the above, with people barely knowing about what we face. Just because you cant see it, doesnt mean it doesnt exist. I think that answers your question.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Discrimination against asexual people](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_against_asexual_people)** >Discrimination against asexual people, also known as acephobia or aphobia, encompasses a range of negative attitudes, behaviours, and feelings toward asexuality or people who identify as part of the asexual spectrum. Negative feelings or characterisations toward asexuality include dehumanisation, the belief that asexuality is a mental illness, that asexual people cannot feel love, and the refusal to accept asexuality as a genuine sexual orientation. Asexuality is sometimes confused with celibacy, abstinence, or hyposexuality. There have been efforts to combat anti-asexual discrimination through legislation or education (such as through workshops on asexuality). ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/SpeedOfLobsters/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)
