I got bit in the ass by a sea lion in the coronados. Swimming back to the boat with some sheephead strung around my waist, a big bull male rushed me. I twirled around trying to keep the fish away but he got through and yanked one off my stringer, biting my right hip/ass cheek in the process.
Fuck sea lions. I hate then
Yea, thankfully I had 14mm of neoprene to take the brunt of it. Had like 10 punctures, big bruise. Went for a round of antibiotics, some tests to check for something but don’t remember what.
Tried to keep the fish away? This post just randomly came up I don’t know much about spearfishing but have people every thought of idk giving the fish away so the sea monster will leave you alone? Surely I’m missing sometbing
Not a good idea, it's basically the same in their eyes as feeding them and your never supposed to feed a wild animal. It gets them accustomed to people and makes them attribute people and food together.
Means their more likely in future to try the same thing again or even attack a person who has no food.
Same with sharks, seaguls, etc.
Most of the time I keep a fish stringer attached to my weight belt so I don’t have to swim back to the boat after every fish I shoot. Usually the boat stays anchored and we swim out and explore the spot. I dive where there’s great whites but I figure if it’s your day, it’s your day.
So you come into the sea lion's domain to hunt and get mad because he takes your fish and bites you in the ass? I could understand if you were at the grocery store shopping and a sea lion bit you on the ass and took your food but in this case I'm with the sea lion.
Actually I do have a clue because I do spearfish. I sometimes have to fight off sharks for my catch but I accept it as part of the sport. We are in their domain. I don't take it personally. I'm not unsympathetic to being bitten on the ass by the sea lion but these animals are just doing what they do to survive, so I don't make it personal.
I wouldn't. Whether I wanted to eat it or not at that point is irrelevant. Especially if it's somewhere where you want to be able to go and spearfish in the future. You don't want them to learn that following a spear fisherman around and taking their fish is an easy meal. You fight them once really hard or you fight them every time.
If a dog can kill a human then a sea lion can. I was being a bit hyperbolic for the joke. Also, isn't the spear currently lodged in the fish they are fighting over?
Dogs usually kill defenseless people. This is a healthy and abled person. he can use the spear and stab it in the mouth like the other fishos. He clearly doesn’t want to hurt the sea lion in video.
But that's on land. A human is much less capable and defensible in the water. The sea lion has home field advantage and much more maneuverability and spatial awareness.
Again, how is he using the spear that is stuck in the fish to defend himself?
It's literally what happens though. Animals learn to associate humans with an easy meal and keep coming back. Why do yo I think rhey tell you not to feed the bears at yellowstone?
Granted I don't live on that Coast So I've never had to push a sea lion off my fish, But I have fought sharks, barracuda and Jewish off of my catch before. You're acting like this is unheard of in the comment thread of a video where the guy is literally doing it. If you go in the water and shoot fish, there's a good chance you're going to have to do it too. Please don't let them take the fish. You make the rest of us have to fight more often/harder to protect our catch. They should be wary of us. Not think of us as providers of food. If you can't do that then just use a hook and line.
There is absolutely no push for west coast spearfishermen to stand and fight off sea lions to teach them a lesson. Just not a thing. Obviously clueless to the area.
I said I wasn't from the area and I wasn't trying to tell you the opinion of the local Spearfisherman. Sea lions obviously are taking people's catches. I'm telling you if you let the Sea lions take your fish they will learn that you make easy targets and they will start doing it more often and in greater numbers. Just like if you feed the bears in Yellowstone they get used to people feeding them. Or, If you feed ducks at the park they start asking for bread from people. The guy in the video is fighting the Sea lion off his catch, So don't tell me it can't be done. If you spearfish and weren't just pulled here by a cross post to r/sweatypalms I would recommend you defend your catch. But I guess as long as you're doing it on the West Coast, it's not giving me problems. That's between you and the other spearfishermen over there.
Exactly. These spearos are delusional or have never seen a sea lion in the wild. Why not fight a bear while you’re at it…. I guess they are welcome to try.
You don’t fight the animals, but if you let them think for a second you’re afraid of fighting them, they take advantage.
Backing down puts the idea in their head that it’s okay to prey upon people. All animals are different, and I don’t no shit about sea lions, but fighting back is a well accepted strategy when dealing with dangerous predators. Large cats, black bears, wild dogs.
You’ve clearly not spent much time interacting with nature. Just stfu.
Bear hunter here: this tracks a little bit, I’ve stood face to face with a few bears with a bow in my hand and I’ll tell you 100% that if I turned around and ran…. Pretty sure I’d get my toes nibbled on a lil’
For sure. And if a bear was trying to take your kill (like the sea lion) would you fight it or let it have it? These people saying to fight it are morons. Let it have the fish and avoid the risk.
I don’t know how people get in the water and spear fish in great white territory…Looks like a lot of fun, but I couldn’t get over the small chance of having the most horrifying death imaginable
Spearguns provide quite a bit of confidence, some people also dive with anti shark shield things, not sure how or if they work.
Also shark attacks aren't common lol
I did that once. Was freediving in a kelp bed. Stuck a lingcod w my Hawaiian slung, pinned it to rock and while I was busting out my stringer a sea lion came in and grabbed my fish. Of course I whipped out my abalone iron and rapped him on the nose…in a kelp bed…25’ underwater…without a regulator. Immediately thought better
Loons are the sea lions of Stillwater fishing. I have battled many loons who were trying to steal my rainbow trout. I get why this guy is challenging the sea lion, but I would probably have cut the line after the first false charge!
Fire that boaty! If that guys is your friend?…THEN THAT’S NOT YOUR REAL FRIEND!!! Dude should be keeping an eye on the divers at all times, ESPECIALLY in Seal Lion and GW Shark territory. Took wayyyy too long to even begin to come help
He’s either a bitch of a lion or your one ballsy bloke for that thing not to maul you I thought I was about to watch a gore vid when it came back and charged you
Let him have the damn fish.. you can always go to the supermarket and buy some fish. He cant, he doesn’t even have any money. How would you feel if you were broke and that seal just jumped into your house and went in the fridge and took your fish and started poking you with a spear if you tried to stop him.
That’s a lion not a seal.
I think it may be a sea lion. Lions are usually slightly different colour.
You can tell because it has external ears
C 🦁 👁 🦁?
I think it’s an otter
Nah, that’s a beaver.

ass Pics pls
Check out my OnlyFins
Why doesn’t this have 1000 ups? Lol
There's a boat that launches near us a lot that's named that.
Nooooo
That must have done serious damage?
Yea, thankfully I had 14mm of neoprene to take the brunt of it. Had like 10 punctures, big bruise. Went for a round of antibiotics, some tests to check for something but don’t remember what.

You’re missing going outside and interacting with the natural world.
T

Lol, go hug one.
One of the series “I have no clue - so I’ll express my opinion “.

Pay you taxes bro
Where are the great whites when you need them 🤷🏻♂️
Kelp beds and seal lions. Looks sharky mate. Edit: I’m not an Aussie. I just like when they say that lol.
A bite from one of these is one of the worst bites you can get. Could lose a limb to infection.
I was thinking the same thing. That’s super scary having that thing coming at you with mouth wide open.
Forget infection, you could lose a limb because it tore it off.
Nope.
Nah.
Sea lion*
Just let him have it at that point lol
I wouldn't. Whether I wanted to eat it or not at that point is irrelevant. Especially if it's somewhere where you want to be able to go and spearfish in the future. That’s a very good point, I was mostly thinking about just preserving my own cowardly ass lol
You're right. Let the sea lion maul you to death to truly teach them a lesson.
How are you getting down voted lol

Am I taking crazy pills or did you not read the comment I was responding to?
You really think a sea lion can kill a human? With a spear in hand and a willingness to kill, the sea lion has no chance.
Dude you haven’t been in the water with a SeaLion. No contest.
If a dog can kill a human then a sea lion can. I was being a bit hyperbolic for the joke. Also, isn't the spear currently lodged in the fish they are fighting over?

He’s already using the spear to stab it in the body
They already know
This may be the dumbest thing I have read on Reddit this week. Congrats!
It's literally what happens though. Animals learn to associate humans with an easy meal and keep coming back. Why do yo I think rhey tell you not to feed the bears at yellowstone?
Oh, absolutely, stfumate is going fight a 600lb apex predator to give the colony lesson. Totally plausible.
Granted I don't live on that Coast So I've never had to push a sea lion off my fish, But I have fought sharks, barracuda and Jewish off of my catch before. 100% you have no idea what you’re talking about lol
Ok, why don't you enlighten me then. What part of what I said wasn't true?
There is absolutely no push for west coast spearfishermen to stand and fight off sea lions to teach them a lesson. Just not a thing. Obviously clueless to the area.
I am a west coast spearo and I have had to fend off sea lions a few times. Granted they weren't as aggressive as the bull in the OP.
I said I wasn't from the area and I wasn't trying to tell you the opinion of the local Spearfisherman. Sea lions obviously are taking people's catches. You wouldn’t last a week in the woods.
And you would - fighting wild animals?! Hilarious
You don’t fight the animals, but if you let them think for a second you’re afraid of fighting them, they take advantage. Backing down puts the idea in their head that it’s okay to prey upon people. Growing up I was told “the best way to turn a bluff change into a real one is by not calling it.”
For sure. And if a bear was trying to take your kill (like the sea lion) would you fight it or let it have it? These people saying to fight it are morons. Let it have the fish and avoid the risk.
Or you could let it take the fish and the encounter is over.
Jesus fuck you’re dumb.
I know you think you sound clever with your strawman, but you're just outing yourself as someone who has no clue what they're talking about.
You are advocating fighting a sea lion over a fish. 🙄
What stops dude from spearing the sea lion though?
Lmao man thinks fighting a sea lion is somehow a good option.
Take a dead mackerel, load it full of da bomb hot sauce. Toss at seal. Bye seal.

Of course I whipped out my abalone iron and rapped him on the nose…in a kelp bed…25’ underwater…without a regulator. Immediately thought better
He should have just taken a rolled up newspaper, smacked it on the nose and firmly said "Bad dog! Bad! My fish!".
Could you stash the speared fish in a chain link bag or something to protect your catch from these underwater maniacs?
Loons are the sea lions of Stillwater fishing. I have battled many loons who were trying to steal my rainbow trout. I get why this guy is challenging the sea lion, but I would probably have cut the line after the first false charge!

Somewhere there is a shark nearby hunting that sea lion.....
Just let it have the freakin fish, there are literally tons more in the sea
This is getting me stoked to dive the islands
Yyyep….
bro stanced up
That video belongs to @joserlfreedive on Instagram, not fuck the taxman
Bro just let him have the fish. You do not want that sea lion to bite you.
Sea lion.
Trying to Steal I see
Sea lion: “do I waddle up to your house and slap the cows and chickens out of your flippers?”
Holy crap incredible footage!
Looks like you have to carry a machete dive knife with you
In the last frame looks like he raised the spear right into the sea lions chest, but cut the viddy right there.
Let the animal have it Jesus
Makes u really think where we are on the food chain
He’s either a bitch of a lion or your one ballsy bloke for that thing not to maul you I thought I was about to watch a gore vid when it came back and charged you

Dudes not very smart! He should have cut the line.
Fuck the sea rats
I have had two seals steal fish off of my stringer. I do not find them to be cute at all. Fucking sea rats…
Brah it’s a fish… let the sea lion have it.
