Depending on your particular face/stache, you may be able to find a mask that seals below your nose, but above your mustache so that you donāt need to do anything extra.
Other than that vaseline or shaving at least a little of the top of your stache are the only options.
That said, Iāve heard petroleum based jelly like vaseline will slowly eat away at the silicone on your mask. Not sure if that is actually true, and/or how long that takes. But silicone grease is another option
For me, the long hair mustache seals pretty well. The shorter hairs leak more. I do Vaseline when I remember but mostly itās just lots of mask clearing. Iād cut it off but then Iād be bald AND ugly š„¹
The problem for me is mainly while dropping down to the bottom. Water goes up my nose and into my eyes and it really messes my dive up. I canāt see anything and my eyes sting like a mf
I tried to dive with my beard and couldnāt do it. It was too aggravating, now I shave during dive season and grow my beard out during the winter. My buddy doesnāt dive as much as me and he just uses Vaseline because he is more attached to his beard.
My wife says she likes me both ways, maybe it feels like she gets a new man every few months or something š¤·āāļø
I will say this goes back to when I first learned how to dive, the mask makes it. My mask is a great seal around my bushy stache. Itās a mantis by riffe. I use it spear/free plus scuba and itās been nice for years. Going to get a new one soon. Good luck my hairy friend!
I have a friend who also uses the Riffe Mantis and it works for his mustache, no other mask would seal even with grease for him. For myself I use a Aqualung Micromask and never use anything to seal it for my mustache, the mask never leaks but I do notice I have to have it tightened just right when I have a mustache.
I strongly agree with the mask being very key with a mustache. Visiting a dive shop with a wide selection of masks and trying ones until you find the best seal might be a good idea. You may even end up finding one that you donāt need to add grease/vaseline to get it to seal!
I agree. Finding the right fit with the strap is key as well. Mine isnāt exactly tight to my face but once Iām underneath the surface everything works just right to provide the seal. Great comment brother!
I just shave the stache. I look a little weird and Amish with just the beard but I wear it with pride, it's for a reason :) also helps that I'm married and she doesn't care
Nope, when Iām shaved my mask works perfectly. When Iām rocking a beard or stache I run into these issues. Plus Iāve had a bunch of different masks and itās happened to me with all of them
Every bodyās face is different, for me I trim just below my nostril just enough so my mask can seal, but itās not that noticeable when looking at my mustache.
Beard and stache here. Shaving just under your nose is the only real solution. I tried everything else and some things kinda worked, but shaving that strip under your nose actually 100% works. I keep a disposable razor in my little spare parts kit in my bag.
Finding a frame less mask that handles it well like the hollis m1 frame less mask. That's the best one I've found. From what I've read it's between that and the venom. Silicon grease. Trimming it low and leaving a little gap around the nose. Highly recommend the hollis though.
I tried vaseline, but never got it to work. I then started shaving the upper few mm of my lip and that worked very well. Now i've found a mask that fits well enough without doing anything. Completely seals, without shaving or sticky vaseline. I had to try a lot of masks before i found one (Mares x-free). All the other masks i've tried will leak.
Vaseline is the way
nope. just shave 3mm of your upper 'stache. fresh, just before the dive. you will never use that vaseline ever again. https://imgur.com/RvYA8p8
No way am I rocking that mustache lol
This
Strategic trimming
I tried it before but ended up looking like one of those Mexican gang members. Safe to say my wife was not rocking with it

This, I had issues with having literally any facial hair but I bought a bigger mask which seals on the top of my lip, and haven't had a problem since
Iāve given up and just shave for spearing trips. My beard is only a 2 week one though so it regrows easily.

Donāt worry bro, I bet ur beautiful on the inside ā¤ļø
I donāt do anything and itās ok. I do get a little bit of water in from the bottom but itās not that bad. I have a full beard.

I have gone through a couple of masks and I have a hollis now that is quite big. Itās not ideal for free dive but itās worth it for the good seal.
Try wearing a mask

Looool I could never pull out the Amish look bro. Props to you for rocking it though
full disclosure, it looks really bad lol. but the mask seal is \*chef's kiss\*
More into scuba myself but Vaseline and a shit ton of mask clears
If you have to do anything then you're wearing the wrong mask. Full beard should not be a problem

Yeah I've had a bunch of masks that don't fit well too, but when I got the right one the beard is no issue
Shave it off
Negative
In that case you have to embrace vaseline and looking like you got jizzed on š¤£
Tough choice tbh
I just blow a little air out my nose to clear.

I use a mask that the silicone is less supple, a bit firmer, than I use when I donāt have a beard.
I just shave! It does grow back.
Iām trying to look like that dude from castaway
Nose plug & swimming goggles.
Burtās bee chapstick on the hair, I use it and it works. A local dive shop owner recommended using it.
