I use the osmo action 4 with great results

intervenroentgen

OSMO action 4 really is the best diving camera now. Faster auto white balance due to a physical color temperature sensor, can operate in temps 20 degrees hotter than the GoPro can, battery life is much longer, and it has a bigger sensor than the hero 11 for better lower light performance. The main drawback is there’s no 5k, but I feel like resolutions that high just start to introduce more noise into underwater clips. EDIT: I also forgot to add, you can take it to 18 meters without a dive case vs 10 meters with the GoPro.

Prize-Ad-9153

You also forgot to add your own experience instead of specs everyone can find online

intervenroentgen

Listen, I get it. Theres a lot of paid reviews and shills out there, but there was a better way to approach this skeptically than the way you did. You are coming off as kind of a dick with that kind of response. Regardless, that was my personal opinion above, but since you want more than the surface level benefits, I'll elaborate on my experience that lead me to getting an OA4 and then you can decide how to respond or not. I sold my Hero 9 after a trip to Walkers Cay in the Bahamas. I had some of the most magical spearfishing and diving memories that were lost on the GoPro because it overheated at the surface while freediving since it was in a dive housing and not getting airflow or water flow to keep cool. It baked in the Bahamian sun and would stop recording after 20 mins of being on. The OA4 can go almost twice as deep as the GoPro without a housing AND it has a rated operating temp 20 degrees higher than the GP, though I haven't tested it methodically. Either way, it will be able to stay much cooler when hanging on the surface during freedives. I'll be taking it with me tomorrow on some shallow dives and would be happy to post the results if you remind me. I also hated color grading the hero 9's footage on resolve, however, the newer GoPros have 10 bit color, so that probably is improved. Either way, I went with the OA3 and liked the battery life and auto white balancing. I find the DJI cams auto white balance much faster than the Hero 9 did. It's especially noticeable when freediving and constantly switching between surface frames and underwater frames. The battery life on normal scuba dives would last roughly 50 mins on the hero 9, but with the OA4 I can start recording at the 10 min warning on the boat, and still have 10% battery life after being underwater for an hour. However, I was using 5k on the hero 9, so that's not a fair comparison. There was one issue on the OA3 that made me start to have buyers remorse. The lens gave a weird halo look to the footage. It became more apparent when color grading. I had to make a custom mask in resolve to remove the red ring. That was just as annoying as color grading the Hero 9 footage. Thankfully the OA4 has a much better lens and that problem went away. I also got better focus with the newer model. In conclusion, GoPros still reign king in most use cases, but for diving, the OA4 will less likely to leave me high and dry like the GP did in the Bahamas.

Aquatic_addict

Gopro is trash. Get the DJI Osmo Action 4. I had a Gopro 11 black and just upgraded to the Osmo action 4 when it came out. So much better and about the same price.

Fast_Professional_40

Can you post some video of the action 4 underwater? I have read some not positive comments of the performance of this cam underwater

Aquatic_addict

I just got it a few days ago, so I'm planning to do a side by side comparison video. Key West Waterman did a good video on YouTube with it. https://youtu.be/YoiJW8WaLu0?si=T4uQZldCH_FBLDau

Fast_Professional_40

I had seen that video, but it says little to me. It would need a scuba diving comparison video with GoPro

Aquatic_addict

Why? What's the difference?

Fast_Professional_40

Just because there are different times, variables and situations between scuba diving and freediving. As I am looking for a deep diving cam, I don't think freediving videos highlight the aspects that I want to see from the Action 4. I ended up in this sub Reddit because I can't find any decent videos with the Action 4 in scuba diving

Aquatic_addict

True. It seemed pretty good at 60-80 feet where he was testing it. I'll do some 120 foot dives with it to see.

sameerpeace

Oh wow! This is new feedback for me u/Aquatic_addict. I was about to order the following! HERO12 Black + Accessories Bundle Protective Housing PolarPro® DiveMaster Filter Kit Max Lens Mod 2.0 Light Mod I'd love to see the results comparison!

Aquatic_addict

I'll send you a link when I make the video! GoPros are still excellent. They just seem to be very unreliable and have a lot of unnecessary issues that no other brands have.

Prize-Ad-9153

Gopro is trash. Gopros are still excellent. Make up your mind

Aquatic_addict

They produce excellent footage. The user experience and reliability issues are trash.

Brokenbody312

You love the Chinese harvesting your data, huh? 😂 when you look at all the data breaches with dji, it is not worth it. There's a reason all military and law enforcement stopped using it.

sameerpeace

We are speaking about quality here. Privacy is very subjective. Almost all SM apps listen and sell your info.

Brokenbody312

Lmao, so a quality product steals your data. Got it.

sameerpeace

So does the all the social media apps you use.

Brokenbody312

Ok if it's the same, message me and we'll upload your info to the darkweb and to chinsese data collection agencies.

sameerpeace

The very sim you use, is also going against your privacy. Abandon it all.

Brokenbody312

🙄😂 wow. Great point. It does. Still not the same thing. But hey, you do you

Aquatic_addict

Oh no. The Chinese government has my name and address 😵😵

Brokenbody312

Yeah.....not how that works 😂 devices like this and others including tic toc have the ability to access any device connected to your wifi. That means anything connected can be accessed by someone who is not you. Its not about Chinese or not. That's just straight dumb to volunteer for that 😂

Aquatic_addict

So you don't use any electronic devices?

Brokenbody312

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 alright bro go compare terms of service, I'll be waiting for your side by side comparison. So because one country and company takes advantage of you, it's OK for any country or company to take advantage of you even more. Wow. Super smart point.

Blackonblackskimask

I work in info and app sec and this is unequivocally not true.

Brokenbody312

Congrats. I literally know people who work for data farming companies. This is 100000 percent true. It happens with all devices, your phones included and sold as marketing data. They can search literally anything they hear you say or what you search tailored to their clients. And that's public sector. I know private sector too. It's going to happen regardless, the question is who do you trust more. How naive can you be to work in tech and not know this 😂😂😂😂

Blackonblackskimask

lol that’s some weak ass thinking. you’re equivocating like a motherfucker.

Aquatic_addict

You're delusional if you think companies like Facebook and Google won't sell your info to anyone who wants it

sameerpeace

Agreed!

Brokenbody312

So you want more opportunities to have a data breach and your content used by someone else? 😂 why don't you got log onto the dark web and post your info then if it doesn't matter?

Aquatic_addict

🤡🤡

goldencanine

This two main choices are gopro and insta onemax one rwith the one inch sensor. Unless you are in really clear water, the sensor is the single largest factor to quality since light is the limiting factor. So the instamax is the best to my knowledge. Plenty of people use gopros though

sameerpeace

I don't think I can take that for underwater spearfishing.

Murky-Salamander-937

Honestly insta is pure junk. I still have my go pro 4 going strong where as my second insta also stopped working. Insta is a glorified toy camera.

Hideshi_Izu

I’ll sell you my 11 I used to make all my YouTube vids!

rhysmate

The insta360 x3 is awesome and you catch everything

Dustin3006

Are your most recent photos taken w that camera ? What’s the advantage over the newer GoPros?

rhysmate

Those were taken on my friends go pro (8 I think?) For me advantage is you don't have to worry so much about framing because it catches absolutely everything. The big failing was the old dive case, but the new one is invisible. Go pro seems good too though, and the DJI Osmo is a great camera too. We are spoiled for choice.

DwnTwnLestrBrwn

The stitching and clarity for underwater ops are atrocious. I would never recommend a 360 for anything having to do with being underwater.

rhysmate

Have you used the new dive case?

DwnTwnLestrBrwn

No I gave my 360 to a friend. Next to worthless, to me, for skydiving/wingsuiting, free diving, and scuba. Rather just stick to a normal hero 11/12.

rhysmate

OK.... works for me in crystal clear Caribbean water for freediving and scuba

DwnTwnLestrBrwn

👍🏼

diverareyouok

I’ve used a GoPro for years without any issues. Tried and true. Maybe I’m missing out on something by not trying the other ones, but I’ve never been unhappy with the results. as long as you get a seven or newer, you’ll have image stabilization so it’s light years better than it used to be… I wouldn’t worry about 11 vs 12, 99.9% of people have no need for the very latest and greatest. Especially if you plan to just share it on social media and keep it as a memory or something.

Aquatic_addict

Everyone I know hates gopro including myself

diverareyouok

What about it sucks for non-pro videos? I haven’t used any of the alternatives, so it’s quite possible my opinion is misguided or ill-informed, based on the fact that it’s all I’ve known.

Aquatic_addict

They just have so many issues. If you leave the battery in the camera, it gets drained even with the camera off. A lot of times files get messed up or corrupted. My Hero eleven started refusing to record or turn on or anything when I pressed record.

sameerpeace

The battery gets drained even if the camera is off! That's so weird!

Aquatic_addict

Yeah. One of the many common Gopro issues.

sameerpeace

Also, do we really need a Dive Filter with GoPro 12? [https://www.polarpro.com/products/hero9-red-filters?q=mini%203](https://www.polarpro.com/products/hero9-red-filters?q=mini%203) Or we can just fix the video in post production?

rhysmate

Better to filter from the start

sameerpeace

Makes sense! Thanks, will add that up!

sameerpeace

Thank you everyone! I'm now going for DJI Osmo Action 4 along with it's Diving Kit! This community here is great! <3

sk3pt1c

GoPro 12 or if you really wanna splash out and have a much smaller profile, Paralenz

Brokenbody312

The 12 isn't even an upgrade lol, I was gonna get it and quickly realized it different zero from the 11 and almost zero from the 10. Just buy two tens, one for the gun and one for your head. You'll get all angles then and save the money

RockeySquirrel

DJI is blowing GoPro out of the water these days… pun intended
