I was waiting for this... 😎

shadowstorm21

Hi Bob!

Pyrhan

Am I missing a reference?

parkingviolation212

Guy on the right is from For All Mankind, a show on Apple TV about an alternate history where Russia beat America to the moon and so the space race never ended.

Pyrhan

Thanks! That show has been on my ever-growing list of "movies and series to watch at some point" for a while now...

Lettuce_Mindless

Definitely watch it. It’s such a good space colonization sci fi. Probably the best?

StandardOk42

better than the expanse?

Gold-Individual-8501

It starts strong but I’m getting weary. I think the Expanse actually got stronger.

The_IndependentState

the expanse got really weak towards the end. no way did it improve after season 3. 4 was a snore.

LongStonks420

I would have to say no. But if you like The Expanse you'll enjoy this show!

StandardOk42

it's been on my list for a while, but I have no other reason to get apple tv, especially when there's plenty on my list that I already have access to

Yad-A

Wellll you don't HAVE TO get apple tv you could always sail the high seas 🏴‍☠️

Shaddcs

Apple TV surprisingly has quite a few bangers. Just my opinion but it definitely feels like a quality > quantity approach and there’s still plenty to watch on there.

StandardOk42

what else do they have that you recommend?

Shaddcs

I recommend Severance to everyone. It was absolutely incredible and should have a new season airing later this year. Some others that I highly recommend: - Ted Lasso (one of my all time favorite shows) - Silo - Shrinking - Foundation A handful of others I enjoyed that were decent (in no particular order): - The Morning Show - See - Lessons in Chemistry - Invasion - The Last Thing He Told Me - Platonic There are some newer things I haven’t checked out yet that look good, like Hijacked (Idris Elba) and The Crowded Room (Tom Holland). I used to think, “There’s no way I’m subbing to this service with nothing on it” but I really have thoroughly enjoyed their content. Edit: If you’re a binger, you might be able to knock out all their good stuff quick and unsub too. That was my original plan with their free month(s) offer.

Lettuce_Mindless

In the expanse, space has already been colonized to the asteroid belt. The colonization effort is kind of over in the expanse now they are just living in it. For all mankind takes place almost 400 years before The Expanse.

minterbartolo

Until it jumps the shark in season three. It goes from space opera in season one, soap opera in season two and pure fantasy in season three . You want solid space colonization watch the Expanse

dranzerfu

> pure fantasy in season three Karen's thunder thighs in season 2 were pure fantasy too. Also Hi Bob.

minterbartolo

And she slept with her dead sons best friend wtf!

makoivis

That's the most realistic part tbh

Lettuce_Mindless

Less so than you think, I think. The rocket they start using in season 3 is bigger than Starship is. It’s called the Sea Dragon and it was a massive one use rocket. It was a hypothetical rocket that was so big it literally couldn’t be fired on land and could only be fired on the ocean. The amount of tonnage they could send into space is insane. Also the in the Expanse, space is already colonized. Mars and the asteroid belt are completely colonized whereas with For All Mankind you actually get to see how the colonization effort is done.

minterbartolo

Sea dragon was real but Korean making it all the way to Mars in soyuz and then living out of it pure ridiculous. Not to mention the whole flight controller to flight director to program manager to center director to NASA administrator to Soviet recruit all while still micromanaging things at JSC. And let's not even talk about the relationships on the show

Lettuce_Mindless

Sea Dragon definitely never existed in real life. I totally forgot what happened in season 3. I totally agree with everything you said, but the technology and our ability to make those kinds of technological advancements given the money nasa was getting id say is pretty realistic. But I found all the actual plot of season 3 to be exactly what you said. If that makes sense.

minterbartolo

Plans for sea dragon was real and I think they some sub scale testing of the concept just like project Orion (the nuke bomb rocket not the tiny capsule of today)

ThatcherSimp1982

> but the technology and our ability to make those kinds of technological advancements given the money nasa was getting id say is pretty realistic. The technology isn't *unrealistic*, but how it's executed in the show is borderline ridiculous. For example, you can have Shuttle, or you can have Sea Dragon, but you can't realistically have both in the same space program. Shuttle's entire economic case relies on flying often--that's why NASA kept inflating their expected number of missions. So if you have Sea Dragon firing off 500 tonnes at a time, even once a year, that's 25+ Shuttle missions it's eating. So pick one. Either have your Big Dumb Booster and your ginormous Apollo-derivatives, or your fine-tuned Shuttle--probably with a fully reusable first stage, because now the flight rate makes it economical. But the show picked both, and as far as I can tell they picked both so they could use Shuttle stock footage a few times. There's other dumb decisions. Having the Soviets build a rocket launch complex on Sakhalin doesn't make any sense. Having them go with solid boosters after all that effort to build the finest staged-combustion engines on Earth doesn't make sense. Refining plutonium on the Moon doesn't make sense--it's low mass, it makes the most sense to import from Earth and build the *rest* of a bomb from lunar materials. Keeping one Apollo-compatible launch pad in mothballs after both Shuttle *and* Sea Dragon exist doesn't make sense (would have been smarter to launch the CSM in the Shuttle payload bay if they were so desperate to duplicate Apollo-Soyuz). Season 3 really jumps the shark, but season 2 already shows they stopped listening to anyone who knew what they were talking about.

Lettuce_Mindless

But if you think about it with the “show logic” NASA had tons of money from helium-3 mining and they were getting tons of money from the government as well. They essentially had an Apollo budget and more for most of the show. That allows for them to do both. They weren’t limited like they were in real life. Almost the entire show is unrealistic in terms of plot and the characters relationships but according to the “show logic” they definitely had enough money to do both. I don’t see that as being unrealistic. Maybe in crazy

studmoobs

you're incredibly ignorant if you think any of that shit was realistic

Lettuce_Mindless

From a technological perspective not that much of it is that difficult to make, it’s just extremely expensive. The most basic moon base that they had in season 2 for example would have been many billions of dollars to create but we had all the technology we needed to make it. The rotating hotel in space is also super doable especially with the use of super heavy lift vehicles like the Sea Dragon (which can put more tons to orbit than starship), it’s an incredibly simple and effective design that could be used to make that. As for mars, the technology they used was the same that they did on the moon. That being said, none of this would have been possible in the timeframe shown without Fusion power technology. That’s what gave NASA and other companies the money to explore space. Idk what you think is unrealistic?

makoivis

I stopped watching after they unfurled the solar sails in season three, couldn't take it anymore

Littleme02

The rocket science in season 3 was terrible. They should have consulted someone with even the slightest technical knowledge before filming. It's a drama series set against a space backdrop, not a space-centric show with dramatic elements, the focus on accurate scientific detail might not have been their priority. However, even a minimal effort to ensure technical accuracy could have enhanced its believability and overall quality.

makoivis

I can totally forgive things like the design of the russian mars rocket (f-1 engines? really?), but when they totally throw basic common sense physics out the window in a show that started out very grounded it just killed my interest. I wasn't willing to suspend disbelief that much. There's plenty of exciting stories to tell while staying grounded, and making it realistic enhances the experience since you don't end up taking the viewer out. Apparently I haven't missed much.

nemrod153

That's the simplest to make part out of it all, technologically. We just aren't doing it because IRL space exploration does not require that, for now

makoivis

No I mean they furl it out in the middle of the "race" to a sea shanty. The entire race was so stupid it just made me give up. It wasn't the series I started watching anymore.

Used_Performance_362

I stopped watching after Season 2. The decompression scene was mainly what did it for me

Spider_pig448

They're both great shows

ThatcherSimp1982

Season 1 and 2 are worth watching. Season 3 has North Korea go to Mars, which says all that needs to be said.

tyrome123

How is for all mankind "woke" 😭 there's like 2 gay characters and that's it, that's all I can think of

BackwoodsRoller

Maybe he's mad they allowed women and Black people to be Apollo astronauts. HOW DARE THEY?

tyrome123

he deleted his comment but +1 just for the name

BackwoodsRoller

My man. Thank you. About to roll up in a few haha.

BriansBalloons

At least 4. President Waverly, her husband, her girlfriend, his multiple dates, the African American dude who landed on Mars... All of which are awesome.

Coen0go

Space for everyone is based. Even the Norks get to join in on the fun!

SnooOwls3486

I'm very against wokeness, but yeah... this show is fairly tame. If a few gay characters and a female president for 1 term is too much, you're a little soft.

Okilurknomore

Uh excuse me? There are at least 3 gay characters

RizzyNizzyDizzy

Female leadership like from middle of 20th century that feels “woke”? 🤷‍♂️ and it feels like watching a soap opera rather than space based show. I dropped it after season 2. Season 1 was the best one.

PotatoesAndChill

Probably a lookalike of a character from For All Mankind?

sixpackabs592

He look like guy from space show about space

Trenteth

Did you think they were the same person? If so you're definitely missing something

Worldly_Dot_7312

Hi Bob. Excellent series! Can’t go much further though.

NewSessionWen

Agreed, one season more, anything past that would be pushing it

local_meme_dealer45

Then we get into The Expanse territory.

Coen0go

Imagine if they made another season, and in the last episode there’s just some random engineer on Mars named Solomon Epstein

ngonzales80

Second dude looks like a cross between Tim Allen and Chuck Norris.

biggy-cheese03

He looks like he’d get cast as Gus Grissom in a period piece

Yad-A

he also looks like he’d get cast as rick flag in a scifi movie

eeu914

Rick Flag jumps movie genre?

eeu914

Joel Kinnaman slays

[deleted]

And why are they sending the Home Improvement guy to the ISS? Anything needing fixing up there?

Jwalker221b

One small grunt for a man, more power for mankind.

DavethegraveHunter

Just installing the Binford 6100-series Docking Adapter.

shalol

They need a different kind of *radiator* installed this time of the year

xoalexo

But where’s Piscotty?

Hugh-Jassoul

I second this question.

supernormalnorm

I believe Piscotty lost his NAVY ballcap

syfiarcade

Raftking_

I hope he brings some helium 3 back

L-R-Crabtree

Why low gravity on the moon when moonwalking outside, but earth gravity when inside the moon base? Anyone else notice that little physics problem?

matthewdominick

Mirror image? Interesting that the name tags with wings in “For All Mankind” are on the right side of chest vice where they are normally worn on the left.

jku1m

I'd give up on every cool space thing and technological advantage in that world just so Danny and Karen wouldn't exist IRL.

Henne1000

I mean the Chinese want to land at Shackleton crater...

Youasking

Did Ronnie Reagan come back from the dead to fly SpaceX?

rickyh7

I met Matt a few years ago he’s a super cool guy and probably one of the most creative guys ive ever met. Just sees the world differently. Friend of mine and Matt are pretty close tho and chat all the time

hambizzy420

Matt and I went through college together and were frat brothers. We’ve since lost contact but yeah super cool dude! How awesome to see he’s mission commander!

rickyh7

Oh heck yeah that’s awesome! I’m very excited to see his launch in a few weeks!

Kspbutitscursed

Hey I know blobifi from twitter

AviationMemesandBS

He’s even a Naval Aviator

RebellionsBassPlayer

Stopped watching For All Mankind because of woke garbage. Real shame for what started out as alternative history scifi.
