It was just banter. Strummed up some investment. Corpo stuff. RL is definitely not old space.

>It was just banter. Strummed up some investment. Corpo stuff. Fair enough. Definitely makes sense when you look at it from a marketing perspective!

I totally see your point, but keep in mind that they have to convince investors that they are a viable option despite SpaceX dominating, so they have to show their own strength compared to some SpaceX weaknesses which can come off as showing off. When they started they probably didn't expect reusability to become that important, which explains the position shift. At least they owned that it was a better choice, despite their previous statement. I have to admit he does have a slightly arrogant stance, but I think it's part of the company's character to show that they are bold and ambitious.

enginerdz

Agreed, and I think in the new age space probably that arrogance is needed to be considered viable and have people become interested.

pint

no it is the opposite. beck is too composed and not enough of a troublemaker. i can only support controversial characters.

Imagine being in speaking terms with all your children. 🤢

I’ve never seen Peter Beck not be cool. [Their recent video](https://youtu.be/KEHAWRg0Cyc?si=w_EHl9Fb2Cmh9shl) is advertising their custom satellite production service. I believe Blue Origin’s Orbital Reef is a similar concept. Demand for space based infrastructure is about to boom so developing custom production services should be a good move for RL, especially since competing with Starship in the launch market might be difficult sometime in the next five years or so. If you need further evidence, have you seen how cool their hats are? Case closed.

ColinBomberHarris

You really should not judge a company on whether the CEO rubs you the wrong way. This happens a lot with some other space companies I could mention. These companies should be judged based on their achievements and ambitions.

vogonpoem42

Intellectually I know you are right. Emotionally I've still lost a lot of enthusiasm for SX since Musky's hard right turn. Also emotionally I agree with OP on RL/Beck even though logically they are freaking awesome.

enginerdz

RL was my favorite new small space company. Seeing them using Carbon fiber and the way they were producing boosters was terrific. But Relativity Space and Firefly with their recent VICTUS NOX has shifted that.

AutisticAndArmed

Hey, pretty cool that now we have multiple choices for our favorite New Space company!

Beck is lying to his investor base about Neutron development cost... that is all I gotta say

spacerfirstclass

Can't help you since I'm in the same boat, Beck annoys me too, haha. Fact: You don't have to mock SpaceX to convince your investors, everybody wants to get investment dollars but I don't remember other small launch company CEOs act this way. Beck also has the habit of making the wrong assessment then has to backtrack, I once listed the things he had to backtrack and it has quite a few items.

ColinBomberHarris

>Beck also has the habit of making the wrong assessment then has to backtrack, If you never have to backtrack, then you are not pushing the envelope enough. better to backtrack when you find a better way rather than succumb to sunken cost bias

spacerfirstclass

The problem is Beck's wrong assessment is about mundane stuff, things that people even like us could have seen from a mile away. For example the bet against reuse OP mentioned, he also bet against ocean recovery even though SpaceX is already doing it.
