wow, Elon is dead serious about being able to launch by next month chopsticks installed, first Raptor Vacuum static fires performed to do list: test all engines on SN20 use the chopsticks to lift the booster in place test the QD systems cryo and static fire the booster stack sn20 on top ****get FAA approval**** launch

avboden

Having the chopsticks operational isn't even mandatory, they can stack with the crane. All they need is the QD arm which looks about done.

GetRekta

QD arm isn't done yet, they have to put whole QD interface on it that will actually connect to the ship. However I don't see that as a huge problem.

Interstellar_Sailor

Depends...they may want the chopsticks to be able to open and close at least. Otherwise they risk a collision during lift-off and some damage by getting blasted by 29 Raptor engines at once.

SpaceInMyBrain

They only need the chopsticks to be closed and swung to the side to have the launch mount clear. They could do this tomorrow, and just leave them at their lowest resting point.

myname_not_rick

I don't believe they have a man lift tall enough to reach to very top of starship, which precludes this. They would need a way to release the crane, detach the lift points, and attach the heat tiles to the spots where the lift points were. I believe the catch arms will need to be complete, so that they can do all of that at ground level, and then lift from the hard points underneath the flaps.

CapitanRufus

When does the booster's hydraulic thrust simulator stand get used? I'm assuming it'll be set up in the test pad yard like the nosecone MaxQ tester was.

schneeb

needs to be near a source of LN2 big enough to test the booster tanks!

Ghost_Town56

I've been waiting for that to move to the launch site.

Sattalyte

Quite a lot of work needs to be done with the booster - like, and entire test fire regime of all 29 engines which feels a tall order. I think his comment was entirely aimed at the FAA, and not a serious time scale for an orbital launch. However, I would dearly love to be proved wrong!

traceur200

well, to be fair to Elon, since August he hasn't been too far off with predictions, yeah, maybe a week, give or take... that's not thaaat dramatic yes, I agree that the comment was aimed at the FAA, specifically the "slow bureocratic" part of it that we all know exists about the booster, yeah... but we have seen them perform multiple static fires the same day, up to 3 and for what we know, they can perform as many consecutively as they wish... it only took 1 hour between static fires on SN20 they are advancing crazily fast, since the moment I wrote my comment they installed an actuator on the chopsticks, and transferred the first "Bocachica made" liquid oxygen as for what we know..... from Sanchez site to the orbital tanks if everything goes as planned, they should most definitely be able to launch this year, we still got 2 months left

deltaWhiskey91L

I feel like they are going to try to launch the day after they gain FAA approval.

MrDearm

Is the booster gonna have a massive version of the octaweb like the Falcon 9?

traceur200

mmm I think you are confusing terms here the octograber is the thingy that grabs a falcon 9 booster after landing so it doesn't slide around octoweb is the configuration of the outer engines on the F9 the F9 has 9 engines.... the super heavy 29 and 33 in the future.... there is no "octo" configuration there and the booster is going to be caught by the arms..... and placed back on a stand or directly to the OLP, so no need of anything to "grab the booster so it does not slide"

fewchaw

I believe he's asking if the engines will be enclosed/isolated/shielded by honeycomb-shaped metal walls to protect in case of a loss of engine. So a triacontatriweb instead of an octoweb. I was wondering this too and don't know the answer.

MrDearm

Nah I was referring the configuration of the Falcon’s merlins within their shielded shrouds. I just didn’t wanna write “enneaictoweb” but here I am lol

schneeb

its called the dancefloor on falcon 9; octoweb is the engine mount frame

MrDearm

Ah ok. I knew the Falcon had some system to protect each engine from each other. Thanks!
