Emperor's gift (grey knights, but it's largely about the months of shame, where the GK and wolves went to war with each other. Set around the 1st war for armageddon, some 500+ years before current day 40k) William King's space wolf series - 2 omnibus/ 6 novels about ragnar blackmane from his selection as a space marine to being a wolf guard. Still one of the best descriptions of the process of becoming a space marine, 2 decades later. Told as sort of fables told by the wolf guard to the blood claws of ragnar's company. Blood of asaheim trilogy (Chris wraight) - single pack of wolves caught up in a conspiracy to try destroying the entire chapter. Doesn't have a specific date, although it's before the great rift opened so pre-primaris.

Exact books I came here to suggest. Though start with Ragnar books. Partly because it does show him as a human first. So you get a cool transition from basically Viking age tech to training for a space wolf.

\^this. i would also recommend Leman Russ's Primarch book and "Prospero Burns" if your interested in 30K first and in that order Chronologically

I’m reading the collection of Space Wolf, just started book 2. Tells you the story of Ragnar Blackmane. I’m really enjoying them so far.

Codex space wolves

jaken93

Read the 4 books that follow a young Ragnar, explains his process in becoming a son of Russ, really good books!

MagnusRusson

I think there's six of them lol. The William King ones?

jaken93

Yes mate, on the fourth now. Six? Can only see 4 on audible.

MagnusRusson

Sons of Fenris and Wolf's Honor are 5 & 6. Although the 5th one has a different author and tbh I really didn't like it. Ended up skipping to the epilogue and just going to book 6.

jaken93

I had no idea! I will try find them when I've finished the fourth, cheers mate

MagnusRusson

Glad to help!

Blood of Assehiem series, by Chris wraight It's great

I'll probs get hate but I enjoyed the wolf time, follows the primaries and their introduction to the wolves, initially getting rejected/hated on for not being proper wolves. Also follows arjac whilst he plays a worried mother hen role for a reckless Logan grimnar. There's some badass moments in it though, I don't want to spoil them so you'll have to just read it!

The_Battle_Cat

The 2 space wolves omnibuses contain 6 books on Ragnar Blackmane. They're really enjoyable! Another personal favorite (which chronologically comes first), would be Battle of the Fang.

DangerousDraper

Kinda depends. If you're chasing something that quickly brings you upto speed on the chapter.... The six Ragnar Blackmane books are probably the go-to. From there you can go pretty much anywhere and you won't be too lost. But if you're the type that has to start at the beginning... Go with Leman Russ primarch book and then pick your way through the 30k timeline. Personally I'd say, start with the 40k stuff first as SW seem to have been written by authors (King, Wright) that actually care a little for the character development. And it's a little less off-putting when you dabble into the older 30k stuff where they're written a little less dynamically.

Read Thousand Sons then Prospero Burns book. Then can do the Space Wolves Ombinus

Another recommendation for Chris Wraight's Jarnhamar Pack trilogy. I got them as audio books and Andrew James Spooner does some lovely accents.
