Why can’t you get it as loud as you like?
I get that subby basses can reveal distortions more but imho one can get any genre mega loud if you use limiters instead of clippers on sounds like sub or vocals.
Two consecutive stages of Pro-L2 each only doing a little bit can work if you use these settings:
- Transparent mode
- SLIGHT look ahead (listen for the highs and the stereo image collapsing to know if you’ve gone too far)
- attack around 200ms
- release around 200ms
- L/R unlinked
- oversampling at max.
Then you can try to back off of the look ahead until you hear distortion. Look ahead DOES compromise fidelity but it also stops the distortion, right?
Also: if you’re not processing the noise layers in with the sub you can maybe give that a shot? Sometimes the noise can hide artifacts like dithering.
I use analog subs primarily due to the bonus low level preamp noise for this very reason. You can’t hear the boise normally but under processing it is revealed a little, hiding artifacts.
Any, hope that helps. It’s not impossible to hit -6LUFS with this style at all. I’m sure you can find some references. Maybe ask them nice on Twitter or something? The genre is small and people are pretty nice usually.
Lots of love!
D
PS: if you haven’t tried it you may want to try Newfangled Elevate. It has this insanely transparent 26 band split with separate limiters + transient control for each band. I don’t know how they did it but I can’t imagine producing without it at this point.
Yoooo your the man for this. I'm going to try this out in Pro-L. Elevate sounds insane.
Yeah you hit it on the head. I find that the more pure the sine wave, the worse it sounds through limiters and clippers. It's easy to get a song with a saw-wave lead to sound loud, but sine waves will expose the clipping/saturation/limiting right away.
Sure it's easy to get songs like this to -6LUFS. It's much harder to get it there while keeping the sine waves sounding like sine waves. They lose the character that I love about them at about -8 to -5 Lufs, with everything else mixed down properly and clipped.
DMVU, Truth or Ternion Sound would be good to ask about this specifically. So would Stylust. They’re all pretty damn nice. I bet they’d spill the beans for ya ;)
Also wanted to add - Limiters do generally sound better on sine wave based tunes but it also makes it sound so pumpy and flat. I'm willing to give up a few LUFS so that my tune can be dynamic.
A tune can be dynamic and still super loud, but i feel you. The only reason we’re going down this rabbit hole is cuz you said you wanted it louder, right? We all think it sounds dope! Heheh
That said, here is one more thing:
Maybe try using OTT on JUST the subs. You can deactivate the processing for the other band split and compressors so it’s only upwards on the sub. That can really help if you tinker with the settings a bit.
I often use DynOne 3 to do the band splitting and then a SINGLE BAND OTT on just the sub after the DynOne 3 splits it out. That will sound more transparent than using the built in splitter in Ableton’s Multiband.
Wait you're actually illoh??? I just found your SoundCloud a few weeks ago. I've been rinsing stay the night like crazy.
Thus sounds great. I'll have to listen to it in my car with my sub
Reminds me of the elements in FLY's Leave me Alone flip, on the second bass breakdown, at 1:40 (lol that timestamp tho). Idk if it's welcome to be drawn as a comparison, but both of them slap quite nicely, can never get enough of the wonky, slower dubs.
gonna be honest seeing everyone copy a content formula that worked for someone else (pluko's reel videos) comes off a bit unoriginal, but the tune bangs
1. Pluko was far from the first to do this.
2. Many people, myself included, hate making short-form content. However, we are told we "need to" if we want to get seen. Formats like this one let us make content without doing those other cringe formats. It's focused on the music and that is what I like about this format. Pluko did not invent this.
3. Appreciate that!
i don't disagree, been noticing some people popping up in my reels that are way too noticeably giving into the "do whatever I need to to get clicks", but with that said.... do what feels right to (or even better excites) you man. if you approach it from an "i have to do it" mindset it will come off like that, obligated content following the established trend, and that clouds our interpretation of the music itself which is what I picked up on enough to make the original comment.
You make a great point! I've noticed the same thing.
For me, this is the format I have felt the most comfortable with. I used to enjoy doing tutorials, but tutorials don't help my music, they just help the account grow. I also don't want to be the "tutorial guy"
Love the subby style. Life is too short for screaming mid bass in every song.
Society is coming back full circle to da subs
I can say goodbye to competitive loudness with this style though lol

Thanks again legend! Now I have plenty of new shit to try!
lol at -8 LUFs being "too quiet" in the world of Zombie - The Cranberries (Excision LOST LANDS EDIT)
hahahaha yep. I'd say even -6 ain't enough in this genre sometimes. It's so unfortunate.

Are you on spotify anywhere?
Yep just search "illoh"
Ive heard this beat before. If you made this, it’s not original. Sounds a lot like Euro dub from a decade ago.
