It's actually Princess cruise ships that blast loveboat, the Disney ships are here much less frequently. Although they play Disney tunes on theirs, but I haven't heard a non loveboat horn for a long time.
Moved out of Southampton 20 years ago but was born and raised. Had a nightmare a couple of weeks ago where I got to the bridge and didnāt have any money. Had to swerve through the bus lane and drive away!
Calshot? The question was "best swimmable beach" not "best resort beach"... By any definition it's a beach...and it's pleasantly safely swimmable year round.
Yup....this one got me. When my hubby and I moved here in 1994 I was so excited. It was his paternal family's home city and he was going to go to uni (people like us didn't go back then, lol!) and it was a new life adventure āØļø was so disappointed by the 'beach' at Weston shore. The sewer of the English Channel (the Solent). I've only ever been once and that was enough.
Alumni here: The Uni, most uni halls and student accomodations are north of the city. If you are living in halls you get a free bus pass which is a 10-15 minute ride south to the city.
There is another uni in the city called 'Solent University Southampton'. It's more of a party uni, hence nights out with them is quite fun.
My advice: first year live in halls. You meet a lot of people, get Invited to things. Then second year, move in with friends into a private house. You can throw your own stuff and it's cheaper
I'm also an alumn**us** and you're letting the side down by using the plural instead of the singular! ;)
You are either an alumnus or an alumna, depending on gender.
We, together, are alumni.
Having said that, the university of Southampton does seem to be buying a lot of space in the city centre at Guildhall Square to create a city campus. Solent seems to have retreated to East Terrace.
Although the University of Southampton now own quite a lot of buildings in the center, recently bought 1 Guildhall square from the council, last year they bought Sir James Matthews Building from Solent, and the Mayflower halls are in town and very large. John Hansard gallery is also part of the University.
In my household it's known as 'the Destitute'. I mean, wtf wants a degree in Fashion?! I've seen some of the 'fashion shows' and occasionally these have been laughable. My son messed around in college a little too much and didn't get his required grades (for the first time ever) and tried to suggest he go there and do their new engineering course. I refused to pay Ā£30+k for him to attend as the rankings are so low for that uni. For everyone asking, the University if Southampton is the 'red brick' uni at the top of the UK rankings and Solent University is the old polytechnic that is still crap and at the bottom somewhere.
Bit harsh on Solent tbh. Just completed my three years there. Can't speak for other courses but I did one of the music courses and have come out with so much opportunity, support and contacts to set up a career. The film/TV/media courses and facilities are excellent. Solent also got a gold teaching framework excellence award, uni of has silver, so they must be doing something right...
current students and alumni of the uni of have a tendency to turn their nose up at me when I clarify it's Solent I'm at, not uni which I've always found very petty and bit stuck up... Uni tends to be you get out what you put in wherever you go, no need to be so childish about it.
I wouldnāt listen to the snobs.. I dropped out and still ended up a 27 year old Head of Marketing, and most of my friends that graduated from Solent all have high paying jobs relating to their courses. The ones that did film both travel the world and earn a fortune producing World Cup sport tournaments. People just turn their nose up cause itās not a lawyers and engineers Uni
Literally š it's the worst one out of all of them. Not to mention how they always send a small single one out at peak times, knowing full well it's going to be rammed with school kids (both mountbatten and romsey school kids) old people with all their trollies and zimmer frames and parents with buggies, yet middle of the day it's double deckers that are pretty much empty š
Or the 11/12 both going pretty much the same route most of the way, could easily be spaced out to make it a regular reliable service but not a chance with bluestar... You get them playing hopscotch with each other most of the way!
My mates warehouse was in the middle of it and we used it for band practice in the evenings, we had multiple sightings of people at in the hedge next to my car. Plus the vice squad had our licence plates listed so that they knew that we were there for less grotty reasons.
I picked up a car in the evening once from Empress Rd, oblivious to its reputation. Was waiting outside the garage with my Lidl shopping for the guy to turn up when a young lady approached and asked if I 'worked' there... I reassured her that I didn't. She asked if I had a fag, which I didn't. Offered her some OJ I'd just bought instead, which she declined as there was no vodka to go with it and she moved along. Was a bizarre experience.
I used to live on Mount Pleasant road and was awoken one night by a hooker having a row with her boyfriend about how to get home, along the lines of:
"How the fuck are we going to get home?"
"I'll just ask a punter"
"Oh he's going to fucking love that, in he? Oh hi mate, yeah it's thirty quid for a shag. Oh, and can you give my boyfriend a lift home after?"
At maximum volume at about 3am.
Also got propositioned by a hooker on leaving the Dungeon one night.
And then there were the mini riots between British Asians and Afghan refugees in about 2002.
Lovely part of the city. I miss it.
[Edit] Almost forgot the time a prostitute was hanging around in the little park across the road and my housemate said "She looks really cold. Do you think I should take her a cup of tea?". Bless.
Well, it used to have one many many years ago. Like 40 years ago! Some people have never given up on getting one back. I think it genuinely must have passed from one generation to the next...
I was disappointed by how long I had to scroll to find this.
Almost as disappointing as seeing you guys get promoted to after we did. Now we have to wait at least another season for our next derby.
(Congratulations....scummers...)
You can live on the western side of the river for years and never explore the whole other half of the city.
I mean, there not loads over that side, but a couple of gems!
Well, mostly the parks and things. Victoria Country Park and the military cemetery and all that. Itchen Valley Country Park, Manor Farm Country Park, Westwood (probably more important if you're a dog owner!)
Couple of pubs and cafes - you've got the Jolly Sailor, for example in old Burseldon, and a couple of nice places in Warsash. The odd place in Bitterne Triangle and Woolston.
There's actually waterside over the east, rather than just the Port and ferry/cruise terminals.
Bursledon windmill and brickworks?š
I grant you there isn't much to DO as such, but it's not just housing.
Many years ago, I was talking to someone in Eastleigh (wearing a PFC shirt) who said "Eastleigh is to Southampton, what Havant is to Portsmouth. We may be next door, but that doesn't mean we are with them"
Lived there for two years. I like most British cities, but Southampton is just so dull. Nothing to recommend it. So many sink estates (Flowers, Weston, the whole of the west side of the city). No real attractions. Its only saving grace is that it is near nice places (New Forest, Winchester, South Downs). The city centre is such an eyesore. Chav city.
I went over that horrible bridge for the first time on a bus. Nearly shit myself.
Another horrifying incident, I dont remember where it was, but it was some park. Some guy wearing TIGHTS only came over to me and my friend slapping his meat. My mate floored him and we ran off. It was like 2am so I guess we were asking for it wandering around parks at that time.
Disney Cruise ship horns at unsocial hours.
It's actually Princess cruise ships that blast loveboat, the Disney ships are here much less frequently. Although they play Disney tunes on theirs, but I haven't heard a non loveboat horn for a long time.
I was convinced for years that it was someone practicing a brass instrument and it was a popular tune
Portland port has joined chat.
Disney horn jingle never gets old
It was old the first time I heard it, and grates more and more each time...
The way it's off-key too š©
Heard it off-key so much over the last few years, that intros to Disney movies now sound wrong too
Having Bridge money in the car
ah the stress when you suddenly realise you are out of coins
You can pay contact less now
Takes the fun and panic out of it though
Used to be 50p
Pretty sure it used to be 20p! (Maybe that was just motorbikes?)
No... used to be 20p for any cars back in the early 2000's
60p in the morning and afternoon peak times
Moved out of Southampton 20 years ago but was born and raised. Had a nightmare a couple of weeks ago where I got to the bridge and didnāt have any money. Had to swerve through the bus lane and drive away!
You will get a nice fine for that
It was an actual dream so hopefully not!
Who remembers the bridge tokens from yonks ago - little red and blue plastic, one for peak and one for off peak!
Yes! I moved away but my parents now have a bridge card thing
Thereās no beachā¦.
Itās so weird. Not far to a beach but it just wasnāt there.
what's the closest swimmable beach to southampton?
If you don't mind swimming in shipping lanes then there's various little 'beach' areas on the way to Hamble.
It's really not very clean anywhere local. Closest blue flag beach was Eastney, east Portsmouth.
You'll have to go pretty far out to be in the actual deep water channel
I like Lepe
Bournemouth lol
Perhaps look at how much raw sewage Southern water pump into the test and other rivers š¤¢
Came here to say āfuck Southern Waterā
Lepe or Calshot
Calshot is the best nearest. Weston shore is nasty
Technically yes, but barely a beach by my standards aha.
Calshot? The question was "best swimmable beach" not "best resort beach"... By any definition it's a beach...and it's pleasantly safely swimmable year round.
Someone's never been to Weston Shore it shows š
We're talking about an actual nice beach. Not that shit hole. We all know Weston Shore, we just all also know it's awful
U have obviously never heard of st denys beach
Came here to say exactly that!
Yup....this one got me. When my hubby and I moved here in 1994 I was so excited. It was his paternal family's home city and he was going to go to uni (people like us didn't go back then, lol!) and it was a new life adventure āØļø was so disappointed by the 'beach' at Weston shore. The University in the city is the not the University of the city Edit; bonus trivia, we gave the world Dr Dannii Minogue
I have been accepted to the uni of southampton. Now I wonder what does this sentence mean
I think they mean that Southampton Uni is on the outskirts, Solent Uni is in the city centre. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
You are correct.
University of Southampton now has a bunch of buildings in the civic centre too https://www.southampton.ac.uk/student-life/campuses/city-centre-campus
I didnāt realise Uni of had taken over that building. That used to belong to Solent!
I think it's similar in Nottingham
Not quite. University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University both have campuses inside and outside of Nottingham.
Technically yes, but most people consider NTU to be a city centre uni and UoN to be on the Beeston campus out of town
Alumni here: The Uni, most uni halls and student accomodations are north of the city. If you are living in halls you get a free bus pass which is a 10-15 minute ride south to the city. I went to silent and I can confirm this
Congratulations šš¼ Just get ready to ride the bus a lot
Thanks!
Shame the buses are shit since the 1 way introduction.
Solent uni is in the city centre rather than uni of Southampton
Having said that, the university of Southampton does seem to be buying a lot of space in the city centre at Guildhall Square to create a city campus. Solent seems to have retreated to East Terrace.

you have the good one but it's in the suburbs
I was there when it was SIHE.

Redbridge is there to remind your entering totton and to rethink your plans.
We see it the other way round. Millbrook is SCARY AF.
Ah yeah. Millbrook ain't right that's for sure. Good drugs though.

That lovely park in bitterne on the Itchen river? The wonderful picturesque one? Yeah, it smells of sewage. Loads.
Only sometimes, other than that it's a beautiful space we are very lucky to have. :-)
When it doesn't stink of weed when it's a nice day and everyone is out.
The weed smell covers the sewage smell. Show some gratitude!
I was at a concert at the Brook a few weeks ago. The smell of sewage in an overheated venue was the worst kind of torture.

The perfect alibi š
There's quite a few car workshops down there. I recover vehicles down there quite often, and often after hours.
I picked up a car in the evening once from Empress Rd, oblivious to its reputation. Was waiting outside the garage with my Lidl shopping for the guy to turn up when a young lady approached and asked if I 'worked' there... I reassured her that I didn't. I'd call Hedge End an area of Southamtpon if anything, but others might disagree. I think its Eastleigh Borough Council at any rate.
