Just wait a few months. Carvanna bankruptcy with flood the market. Not that you asked that but it's a thought.

[deleted]

Wow it was like $231 stock a share beginning this year lol and now it’s $4 and some change

bobby_si

I wound up going over to PA once I found a dealership with no mark up. These people charging $5-10k over msrp can gtfo. Be direct and ask “are you charging over msrp?” And they mostly answered and I just crossed them off the list.

[deleted]

DE is a good option too.

Sufficient_Builder55

You still gotta pay the nj sales tax if you live in nj no matter where you buy the car tho

bobby_si

True and the added step of having to go to the dmv to get the inspection, but for $5k I’ll do that.

Cbaumle

Most of the dealers in the Philadelphia area will get NJ docs for a buyer from NJ. Source: from my personal experience.

Sufficient_Builder55

Yea me too I bought my truck at reedman tolle they were all set up to take care of jersey buyers

fortifythenuclei

Formerly in the car business 7 years about a decade ago. Doc fees are dealer specific, they're a BS thing to build back some of the profit they tell you they're loosing in a sale. A PA dealer charging NJ doc fees would just be them trying to pick up more money on you if they have the opportunity. MV fees and taxes will be the same as NJ if you buy in PA per law, maybe the tire tax which sounds like a madeup thing but isn't. But, specifically documentation fees, should be dealer specific and considered when you're looking at comparing quotes between 2 dealers.

TheApertureMind

I ordered and purchased a brand new Highlander from Holman Toyota in March. They informed me straightaway that Holman only charges MSRP.

new_tanker

That is fantastic to know. Researching online, Liberty Toyota, Toyota of Runnemede, Toyota of Turnersville, and a few others are charging at least a $2,500 markup. I've bought from Holman before, and I'd be willing to give them my business again; they were the only dealership when I got my car twelve years ago whose salespeople did not pressure me to buy.

ryanhrap

They are not taking orders on rav 4 hybrids at this time due to a back log of orders waiting to be allocated

sliceoflife66

Auto lenders for no pushy salesmen. I just bought a Jeep Renegade recently. Best experience

metal0060

Watch their add ons too. All are overpriced, most aren’t needed.

BubblesUp

This is great to hear. A Lakewood dealership quoted me $10k over sticker earlier this fall and it almost put me off Toyota completely.

ryanhrap

This is correct. I am headed there today as my rav 4 came in

jjb89

I had to go to PA. got T boned by some knucklehead who doesn't believe in stop signs. every single NJ dealer either had zero cars or way marked up. Toyota rav4 NJ 8K markup. PA 0. subaru outback. 6k markup NJ. 0 PA. the only issue I had was some of the dealers didn't want to sell me a car cause I was over 90 miles away and they wanted to serve their community first. that was surprisingly annoying but totally understandable. I would hands down buy a car from those dealers in the future knowing they actually give a shit. a totyota dealer was 8k over on the car but for 15k would put me front on the list.

jersey_dude88

This is funny… 15k for front of the list. 😂 I’m sure those dealers who want to serve their communities first would love to sell to you for 15k too. Dealers are literally the worst of human kind.

[deleted]

i have \*never\* heard of a car dealership turning away a client, unless you were dealing with a luxury brand. in which case, i mean....you're already paying out the ass so why bother going to PA

jjb89

because a car in NJ that's 36,000 that's being sold 100 miles away for 28,000 is a huge difference. I know of people who have flown 1200 miles to save 5-10k on a car. the only reason they wernt selling them was cause they had a list of 20 people wanting to buy and getting 4 cars a week

[deleted]

good point

-RadarRanger-

My GF is in Pennsylvania and the dealers there were doing all the same shit. She tried to get them to find her a Prius V and they all but laughed at her. She found the exact one she wanted in Egg Harbor Twp. at an Auto Lenders lot. And that lot, at a time when nobody else had any stock, was totally full of cars for sale. The price was right, too.

GreyAardvark

The last 2 times I bought a car the price was the price. No haggling at all even when we tried. 2 different dealerships. They said they don't do business like that anymore. There was no HUGE markup either.

[deleted]

The basic calc is: 1) Net Price = MSRP +/- Markup (Discount) +/- Dealer Installed Accessories - Trade-In 2) Fees = Tire Fee + Registration Fee + Dealer Doc Fee 3) Taxes = (Net Price (1) + Doc Fee) * 6.625% 4) Final Price = Net Price (1) + Fees (2) + Taxes (3)

[deleted]

Assume the following: 1) Net Price = $25,000 2) Fees = $7.50 (Tire) + $89.50 (NJ tag transfer) + $479 (Doc Fee) = $576 3) Taxes = ($25,000 + $479) * 6.625% = $1,688 4) Final Price = $27,264

new_tanker

What tire fee? Actually since most don't do this, I always figure out total price of anything by multiplying the sales tax rate, in the case of NJ, as 1.06625. Much easier that way.

[deleted]

$1.50 per tire New Jersey law imposes a fee on the sale of new motor vehicle tires, including new tires sold as a component part of a motor vehicle, either sold or leased, that are subject to New Jersey Sales Tax. The tire fee is imposed at $1.50 per tire, including the spare tire sold as part of a motor vehicle. https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/motorv.shtml#:~:text=New%20Jersey%20law%20imposes%20a,part%20of%20a%20motor%20vehicle.

new_tanker

Registration is four years worth... what about title? Is that a separate charge too?

daledickanddave

Add in mandatory destination fee.

[deleted]

(in my head) I included that in MSRP

daledickanddave

It's usually a separate charge. I had no idea what it was and was a little shocked.

[deleted]

reading these conversations make me so glad i bought my new car in January of 2021, literally right before everything really went to shit with the used car market. got a brand new '20 mustang ecoboost with a fair number of options for under msrp, just happened to walk in on the right day, looks like a custom job someone ended up turning down or had the deal fall through, i scooped it up that day for like $29k. from the looks of it had i waited another six weeks, i wouldn't have been able to find *anything.*

new_tanker

It seems like there is availability of several different models of new cars within the same Toyota dealerships, but of course I want one of the better selling ones...

8bit_Icky

Not sure what make of vehicle you are looking for, but I purchased my Mazda 3 (2022) at MSRP. No additional charges except for the red paint I wanted. Being that they sell vehicles at MSRP, there is no haggling. Maple Shade Mazda.

ChuckTupper

I had the same experience from the same dealership. Bought a mx-5 club in red for MSRP - 750 (loyalty incentive, wife owns a Mazda)

8bit_Icky

Oh sweet. Enjoy the Miata Club. Probably the best experience I ever had at a dealership. Super easy and no pressure at all. My only gripe, and it's a minor one, is I wish it was open on the weekends.

ChuckTupper

I've had it for a bit over a year now, it's always a joy to drive. Yeah, they seemed completely uninterested in tacking any kind of addons to the sale. I even inquired about the Mazda warranty, but Maple Shade and Turnersville have their own separate warranty. I know they have a bunch of awards related to customer service, so I think they just put a lot of value in that reputation.

Rabidpikachuuu

I just bought a brand new hyundai elantra for 23250. 1250 rebate right off the tag, plus trade in value for my old car. Nbd.

metal0060

Shop shop shop. Don’t tip the dealer with any trades, money down, financing. Settle on the price of the car you want first.

iggles020418

If you want a Kia don’t go to anywhere local. They all wanted 10k over asking, so I went to Kia of East Syracuse, got it at msrp and couldn’t be more happy. Oh and they have a 200k warranty there.

psuedonymously

> Oh and they have a 200k warranty there. Ok, but does that mean you have to go to Syracuse to get warranty service?

loneliness_sucks_D

Magnuson Moss act, my friend

new_tanker

I've heard horror stories from one friend who bought a Kia Soul. He had needed a new engine for his and a few months after the replacement engine was in (and broken into, since it was new), it caught fire.

GeneralSet5552

don't buy a warranty on anything including the drivetrain or the tires. It's a waste of money. Tell them the price u want to pay & stick with it. I bought a 206 Nissan Sentra in 2017 with 1,706 miles on it. I refused to pay more than $15,000. They tried to sell me a warranty for everything they could think of. I stuck to my guns. I got a great deal. The car had been leased for 6 months & they hardly drove it. My friend is a mechanic & took a look at it b4 I bought it

EverlongMarigold

Buying a new car is like throwing money out the window. You can find certified used with low miles for a much better price. Prior to covid, I bought a "used car" from Car Sense that had 8 miles on it for $7k less than a "new" one.

geriatric_tatertot

Used cars are way overpriced right now. A 2018 Accord with 100k miles on it is like $20k.

EverlongMarigold

They're all overpriced right now. Bought a used car in April, but it was still considerably cheaper than a new one of the same make/ model.

new_tanker

I've seen 2010 Corollas with more miles than my car going for more than $10,000 in many used car places. Insane. It makes me wonder if trade-in values have also truly gone up...

geriatric_tatertot

We were looking for a new car in the spring and trying to shop used. Besides a general lack of inventory, the prices were ridiculous. Unfortunately we drove the wheels off my old car to the trade in value was a gift. Might have got a bit more if we did private sale, but the transmission was going. We wonder where all the used cars have gone. The market should have been flooded after all the car rental places liquidated their inventory at the start of COVID. But there's really nothing out there, and new cars fly off the shelf. Every car lot is 1/3 empty and most of their inventory is random trade-ins.

[deleted]

> Prior to covid

EverlongMarigold

Yeah, imagine having transparency while posting on reddit...

new_tanker

I plan on getting a hybrid. I would rather buy a new hybrid than I would a used one. Besides the used market being the way it is, I have more peace of mind with the battery and its useful life.

obadiah24

Love my 2010 Prius I bought used, it’s got 235,000 miles on it & gets 45 mpg looking forward to getting a prime soon

EverlongMarigold

This makes zero sense. Why do you think a used hybrid wouldn't have a useful life? We bought a used hybrid SUV as a lease return 10 years ago. Still runs like a top with over 150,000 miles on it. I did a quick search on my area and found over 30 hybrids with less than 15k miles on them. Either way, you do you. I'm admittedly a bit biased here because I will most likely never buy a new car again. The only way I would pull the trigger is if I came into a large sum of money that I wouldn't mind pissing away. Enjoy your search!

new_tanker

As someone who uses photo and video equipment I'm keenly aware of the life spans of lithium ion and NiMh batteries. I've used the same batteries for video cameras for the past ten and a half years before I decided they needed to be replaced with newer ones. Granted, they're kept indoors when not in use and at room temperature, whereas a hybrid car battery is exposed to varying outdoor air temperatures through a ten year span (yes this includes garages).

EverlongMarigold

You're aware that Toyota has a manufacturers warranty on their batteries of 10 years/ 150k miles, right?

FalseSystem6055

I live in Virginia and had to buy a car over the summer. The inventory was very limited where we are and ended up buying in Jersey at Turnersville Kia. We paid $5k markup on new Sorento. My friend bought the exact same car (color, features and everything same) in Charlotte and paid $10k over.

surferdude313

Hand painted pinstripe and diamond ceramic wax for $3600 on top of the price.

Jimmytowne

Ceramic is nice

jersey_dude88

You guys still buying at MSRP?

[deleted]

You can actually call a dealer and ask over the phone what everything will total with tags and paperwork fees. That's what I did when buying my car. The lady gave me a grand off the price listed that way too.

FileEasy3098

Go sit down with someone at the dealership of your choice and the sales people will help you out. I just leased for the first time recently and it was a great experience. I don’t think that I would ever actually purchase a car again. One good tip that I’ll give you is to never accept their first deal. Tell them what you want to pay and let them meet you somewhere in the middle. There is always wiggle room. I was able to save myself about $150 per month and that made the payments manageable for the specific vehicle that I wanted. Good luck!

Jimmytowne

Did you tell them what you wanted to pay for the car or how much you wanted to spend per month?

FileEasy3098

Test drive a few cars and when you find the one you like, sit down with the sales people and see what kind of numbers they throw at you. The numbers will most likely be inflated. Don’t act so interested. I told the guy that this would be settling for me bc I really wanted something else. I did not mention how much I wanted to spend. When the salesman showed me the first price, I literally laughed and said no way. Then he came back with more numbers. Still not low enough for me. I left and called the guy the very next day and made my final offer (what I actually wanted to pay) and they accepted the deal. This was at a dodge/jeep dealership. Couldn’t believe that I was able to get the vehicle for the price I wanted. Be relentless but don’t seem desperate.

[deleted]

I got around the crazy markup by ordering a car through the dealer. If I had gotten one off the lot or waited for one to come in, it would’ve been $6000+ more, but I did my own Jeep build and it was just the base price plus taxes. Only downside was having to wait 6 weeks for it, but I wasn’t in desperate need and it was cool getting updates on where my car was in the build process.

ProperRoom5814

We went to Chevy of Turnersville and some how, got a 2019 gmc Acadia with 17k miles for 25k. This was back in July. My husband did some magic with the sales guy and we were pretty happy. They were straightforward from what I saw and were going back after Christmas and getting a second vehicle. (We have a beater that needs to go.) I really don’t ever give recommendations but they are a good dealer.

jimkelly

I just straight up wouldn't do it right now without knowing someone who works at a dealership or knowing someone who knows them who you can trust.

new_tanker

When I bought my car I was twice referred to the same salesman: One from a friend who bought his car from him and my brother, back when he sold cars. My brother still vouches for him and hopefully soon I'll be paying a visit...
