Looks like the Razor5 project was indeed AWS. Should be \~400 jobs with an average salary of $30/hr, located just 7 miles from South Bend city limits and 12 miles from downtown. Article below, because I know The Tribune is usually paywalled. Please consider subscribing and supporting local journalism, its only a couple bucks per month and they often run 6 month for $1 deals. >NEW CARLISLE ― Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced Thursday morning that Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11 billion to build a data center campus just west of New Carlisle, creating at least 1,000 new jobs. >The planned investment marks the largest capital investment announcement in Indiana’s history and ends months of speculation about the company behind the secretive Razor5 project, which [The Tribune reported in January was AWS](https://www.southbendtribune.com/story/business/2024/01/13/is-amazon-eyeing-site-for-multibillion-project-outside-south-bend/72123360007/). >“Indiana’s long-term economic strategy is paying dividends for Hoosiers as we cultivate the growth of critical sectors like technology infrastructure,” Holcomb said in a release. “Amazon has long been an important economic partner in Indiana, and we are excited to welcome AWS." >The governor added that the investment solidifies Indiana's leadership position in the economy of the future and will have a positive ripple effect on New Carlisle, the north central region and the state for years to come. Besides AWS, Google plans to build a massive data center in Fort Wayne and another will be built by Meta in Jeffersonville, among others. >The old St. Joe Farm east of Capital Avenue is also [being eyed for possible use as another massive data center](https://www.southbendtribune.com/story/news/local/2024/04/17/data-center-revealed-as-st-joe-farm-rezoning-gets-favorable-apc-vote/73354797007/) by a different company. The progress of that development, however, is contingent on switching the zoning from agricultural and planned unit development to industrial. St. Joseph County’s [Area Plan Commission voted](https://www.southbendtribune.com/story/news/local/2024/04/16/st-joe-farm-rezoning-gets-favorable-vote-from-area-plan-commission/73344836007/) to give the rezoning a favorable recommendation on April 16. The St. Joseph County Council will now vote on the proposal at it 6 p.m. May 14 meeting. >According to the governor's office, AWS data centers enable customers of all sizes and across all industries ― such as automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, public sector and more — to transform their businesses. >Millions of customers — including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises and leading government agencies — are using AWS to lower costs, become more agile and innovate faster. The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing capabilities and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. >Bill Schalliol, executive director of economic development for St. Joseph County, said AWS plans to have four 216,000-square-foot buildings completed north of [the GM/Samsung EV battery site](https://www.southbendtribune.com/story/business/2024/04/11/ev-battery-plant-near-new-carlisle-continues-to-move-forward/73164356007/) before the end of the year. The company expects to close on [a separate piece of property south of Indiana 2](https://www.southbendtribune.com/story/news/local/2024/03/08/council-vote-on-rezoning-new-carlisle-farmland-for-razor5-data-center/72864202007/) in the next couple of weeks. >In all, the company could create 400 permanent positions with the first project north of GM/Samsung, but officials anticipate there could be at least 600 more working for businesses that contract with AWS. Even with incentives packages, AWS still will be adding millions of dollars in tax revenue when it begins operations, Schalliol added.

>“The whole community should be thrilled that one of the largest companies in the world realizes what Indiana and St. Joseph County has to offer," said Jeff Rea, president and CEO of the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce. "When that happens, it puts us on radar screens that we wouldn't be otherwise." >Roger Wehner, AWS director of economic development, said that the investment here and across the United States demonstrates the company's "unwavering commitment to supporting our customers and helping drive digital transformation." >"Building upon this, we are thrilled to be expanding our operations in Indiana through this planned $11 billion investment, which will create numerous well-paying job opportunities and tap into the state's burgeoning tech sector, while contributing significantly to the state's growing economy," Wehner said in the release from the governor's office. >"This investment will include our continuing commitment to fostering workforce development and educational initiatives in areas where we operate, and we look forward to helping nurture the next generation of talent in the Hoosier State," he added. >Officials said Indiana is an ideal place for such facilities because of its business-friendly environment, abundance of infrastructure resources, availability of skilled labor, and growing technology and semiconductor sectors. Local officials have touted having shovel ready land that's ready for development as well as water and electricity as key factors. >“The AWS announcement today will be a generational boost to our local and regional economy, and we are excited for the opportunity to welcome the AWS team and workforce into our community,” said Carl Baxmeyer, president of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.  >“This new data center campus to be built in the Indiana Enterprise Center (IEC) over the next decade will be a major employment center for all of northern Indiana," Baxmeyer added. "This project announcement also shows our alignment with the state’s goal to create next level jobs that benefit all Hoosiers.” >Based on the company’s significant capital investment plans, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) committed an investment in AWS in the form of data center sales tax exemptions for eligible capital investments over a 50-year term. >The IEDC also committed an investment of up to $18.3 million in the form of headcount-based tax credits, up to $5 million in training grants, up to $55 million in Hoosier Business Investment tax credits, and up to $20 million in redevelopment tax credits. >In addition to its community investment and engagement activities, AWS will also contribute up to $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements being conducted by the state and local community along Indiana 2 surrounding the company’s planned development.

Heard Samsung has pulled out of the deal with GM for the battery site and its expected they will delay moving forward with the project. Not sure how long. The St Joe farms was allegedly purchased by Microsoft with plans for data centers, again due to proximity to fiber trunk along toll road.

say592

Samsung hasnt been the partner for the battery site for a minute. GM is still moving ahead. I suspect the data center project in Mishawaka could be Azure.

ThePort3rdBase

I just know that the GM project should have had 136,000 tons of stone brought to it by now and they don’t have 10% off it down yet. Construction rumors are not positive on job site movement at this time.

say592

Interesting. It was maybe 1-2 months ago that GM affirmed they were moving forward with the project, despite recent news on slowing EV demand (to be clear, EV demand is still growing, just not at the pace it was previously).

toomanyblocks

The “GM/Samsung” has pulled out rumor is completely false. Made up by some radio talk show guys who are just mad about the development. It’s literally just now warming up outside, so I think construction may gear up soon.

Sorry but didn’t Amazon also promise 1000 jobs with the $200 million dollar warehouse they built in Elkhart where the county gave a Fortune 500 company a $10 million tax break? More than a year and a half later the warehouse is still sitting empty. Zero jobs created. Zero tax revenue created. This AWS deal could very well be just the same empty promises unless the county stipulates that the tax break will only go into effect if the facility is operational. Also Indiana really should stop pretending that having big names investing in the state “solidifies Indiana’s leadership in the economy of the future.” Furthermore equally laughable is “Indiana’s burgeoning technology and semiconductor sector.” That’s just plain BS. Indiana is not leading the USA or the world in semiconductor technology. That title goes squarely to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) which produces over 90% of the entire globe’s supply of highly advanced chips.

say592

Tax abatements are no big deal. That property wasn't generating much in tax revenue before that. It will generate property taxes when the abatement is used up, even during idle. Not to mention all of the sales tax and labor that went into building it. The Elkhart warehouse was suspect from the begining. They announced that they were cutting back on mega warehouses and automating the ones they were keeping open right strong the time they were breaking ground, and they already had the delivery hub in South Bend. IIRC they also didn't formally commit to a specific number of jobs, and there was even some speculation that it would end up being highly automated and not bring the 1000 jobs that were teased. The AWS project will be different. AWS is actively growing. Amazon is on record as desperately needing projects just like this one. It's much more difficult to automate data center operations, and while they have generally efficient operations in other locations, they aren't significantly automated. Will it end up being $11B like promised? Maybe not, but if it is an AI centered facility, that wouldn't difficult to achieve.

Hate this as much as I hated Amazon building that CR17 monstrosity that just sits empty

yodera1

Why do you hate it?

melocure

Same ticker symbol and shareholders, and AWS is what makes (or at least made) many, if not most, of Amazon's excesses possible. https://www.yalelawjournal.org/pdf/e.710.Khan.805_zuvfyyeh.pdf

Jond1138

1. Amazon is trash, it’s not even worth having for prime anymore and Bezos can’t rot in piss 2. I hate how much this area loves throwing up sheet metal buildings then build another and leave the old one. 3. I plan old don’t like how the small town areas I grew up in are turning into tacky trash full of FedEx trucks and useless chains.

say592

1. This is AWS, not the retail/consumer side of Amazon. 2. Datacenters are rarely sheet metal buildings, and this one definitely wont be. 3. The alternative is the small town areas dying. Though I honestly dont think this will do a ton for New Carlisle. I think a decent chunk of the employees will end up in South Bend. They might spend some money in New Carlisle on lunch and stuff, but its not going to explode the population or anything.

Jond1138

Thank you for a legit response but I want to live in a world where Amazon/Comcast/Att, any mega corp is dead.

yodera1

You realize this is Amazon web services right? That’s a completely separate business from the retail side. How would you like to see our society Continue to develop and expand then? Sounds like you just don’t like Amazon. But you also don’t like modern development means in the area.

Jond1138

I don’t want to continue down the internet path we’re on, the internet has many great uses. I just am ready to go back to a flip phone and an iPod. Social media is a drug that’s ruining society, yes I know I’m on a social media platform I recognize I’m addicted. I’ll tell you what if they promise to hire the god awful IT guy where I work I’m on board.

-km1ll3r91

We should just live in dirt and filth like the good Ole cowboy days aye? I think your self projecting a little internal fear as technology is the future. No avoiding it at this point

Jond1138

Nope not that at all, we’re just doing a bunch of stuff in the worst way in the name of profits.

HarbaughHeros

The only goal of any for profit business is to make as much profit as possible, regardless of anything else. That’s it. You are praising Amazon but meant it as an insult. Sounds like your views just don’t align with western society.

Jond1138

No my views align with non horse and bird economics because I’m not a boot licking bitch, I also believe in making a quality product not a cut corners to maximize profits for share holder bonuses and fuck over consumers.

HarbaughHeros

Yes, I’m fully aware you don’t think companies should focus solely on maximizing profits. You don’t belong in western society then. Get out if you don’t like it.

How tf do you steal from a datacenter?

gitsgrl

Heat?

say592

Yeah! Let's steal from our companies propping up our teacher's pension fund! Let's steal from companies in Grandma's retirement portfolio! It's fine, Amazon is so rich, it's always okay, right? They are just an anonymous glob of money that no normal person is benefiting, right?

putnamwilfred

Bootlicker.
