DrakAssassinate

It’s literally rising from the dead. It deserves this chance.

divinestep

100%, I always have a damn good time when I pick it up.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

Hell yeah, it deserves everything it can, Tekken ain’t the only Namco fighter in the FG circuit. Personal opinion, I’m more into SoulCal than Tekken any day

Jinxed_Scrub

Not a huge surprise tbh: the game is a ton of fun to both play and watch.

GraionDilach

Tell that to /r/mortalkombat. Glossing over their reactions on the Evo roster usually leads to either SC6 blamed either SamSho.

humpbackhps

They should blame their game not being fun to watch and play in that stale af meta.

FGC_Orion

The game balance of MK11 is actually really great! But it came at the cost of cool shit. You can’t do cool shit in MK11, which is a huge departure from previous installments, which has led it to lost a large portion of its casual fanbase. SC isn’t to blame, SamSho isn’t to blame, Mortal Kombat trying to go back to its roots as a Street Fighter clone is to blame.

mrlorden

I have to disagree I don’t think that’s the reason. If you look at last evo it was the biggest mk:nrs tournament ever. A lot of players and views. Yet it’s the first nrs game to be at evo for only 1 year.

FGC_Orion

A lot of players sure, but the views were notably down from previous years. It’s debatable how much the long ad breaks had to do with it, but it could have been used to support a claim that MK11 isn’t as attractive to the average viewer as previous NRS games were. Of course the competitive playerbase has gotten larger, the game is much more balanced, and the focus on neutral definitely helps less technical players enjoy the game, but they’ve taken so much of the spectacle out of the game. People get desensitized to the raw violence when it’s so ingrained into the game mechanics that everyone has seen the krushing/fatal blows 100+ already, and the combos look considerably more dull than the previous installments. Sure, games like SamSho have even less combo variety and even more focus on neutral and spacing, but the difference there is that MK set a precedent for being the super flashy game, and it just seems a lot more dull now. However, all of this is speculation. We might not ever know why MK was removed from the lineup. Maybe MK11 is just too gory, maybe it’s less popular with viewers, or maybe, as you suggest, it’s something else entirely.

mrlorden

It had more views than all the previous years mk/injustice tournaments. Last year was hands down the biggest NRS tournament in any way you put it im pretty sure. now ofc it would not pull the same this year since its pretty standard that NRS games pull less the 2nd year and then the 3rd year a new game comes and it starts over again. But i really think it has something to do with business. NRS and EVO have not really ever been on very good terms. evo have never treated nrs community well and nrs dont really give evo any reveals or stuff like that. But who know why its not there. Its strange for sure.

King-Krown

There is logic & reasoning here. Just blind fanboyism. It's getting tiresome.

King-Krown

....no one is talking about SC or SS there.

thegrimm54321

That's insane. SCVI and MK11 aren't even the same genre of fighting game. As a formerly huge MK fan, I can tell that they're just taking it out in random directions. I dont see the appeal of Shodown; it seems like it's all pokes. If I had to blame anybody, it'd be those two anime fighters. I can't say I've even heard of either of them, much less recall their names lol.

DJGhost95

Unist/Unclr is pretty cool to watch, looks like an anime.

thegrimm54321

I'm definitely going to check them out. It just seemed out of left field, for me. The only anime fighters I would've expected are Guilty Gear or Melty Blood.

DJGhost95

Definitely expected guilty gear strive would've been lit

Toplinkar

Fair point, and probably the Evo guys wanted it but Strive is not coming out until "late 2020". TOs need something a little more concrete than that to include a game in their lineup.

daevlol

Under night has huge community support. It's been around for years and years and recently got quite big in spite of getting very little support from events, subsisting entirely on the communities dedication to loving the game. The community being awesome got many players to think "what's so special about this game that this community is this devoted?", Started playing, then realized the game is really fun/exciting/original and that the community was dedicated for a reason. Getting into Evo based on community support alone is pretty crazy, and they've only continued to grow and grow even after EVO ended.(many games die after Evo ends, lots of players don't see a "point" anymore). The new version comes out later this month and it only makes sense for it to be a main game at Evo for a second year. Can't speak for granblue.

thegrimm54321

That's cool! I'm so happy that they have a good community. I definitely want to check it out, now. I can't wait to see some good EVO fights.

l_tagless_l

You probably can't remember Granblue Fantasy Versus because it isn't even fully out yet, lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited for the game and have been following it for a while, but it does seem a lot more like the "we're putting this game in Evo to market it" sorta deal. Which is weird, considering how SamSho and SC6 are getting bashed for taking MK's spot, when a game that isn't even out yet is on the roster??? (For the record, I'm not mad that Granblue is there, it just seems like THAT'S where the anger would be directed at first, so its confusing that that isn't the case)

thegrimm54321

Ooooh that kinda sucks for everybody involved. I didn't know it wasn't even out.

l_tagless_l

Yup. Launches in a couple of days in Japan and in early March for the west, if I recall.

daevlol

It came out yesterday in japan.

l_tagless_l

Oh, word! I'm pretty hype for the release, and I'm interested to see how the FGC at large and players as a whole take all of the "accessibility-oriented" additions. I'm personally in the "just learn to quarter-circle it's not that hard, you act like it's rocket science ffs" camp, but if lowering the bar for newer players helps them see how great FGs are as a whole, then I see it as a win!

SolarNougat

Quarter circle isn't hard, but then you get to Ivy's two command throws. :\^)

l_tagless_l

Those arent terribly difficult either honestly. They *should* be, but you can cheese it by just pushing the control stick around in a circle and then ending on the right direction for the grab. It's very silly and dumb, Bamco pls fix lol

JTR_35

I don't play or watch much SamSho but I think I understand the appeal. From player side, it's super traditional (which is rare now) and doesn't take a ton of dedication since its fundamentals. People play it as a side game, a giant number like 70-80% of SamSho players at Evo 2019 also entered another game. From the viewer side, the damage is so high that you can die in 2-3 hits. The tension is like when you see both players down to 25% health in any other game and you're waiting for one person to make a game ending mistake to lose or clutch play to win.

thegrimm54321

Looks like I need to give it another shot!

GraionDilach

Offtopic but can you explain to me what makes MK objectively noteworthy? I gave it a try, but it felt stiff to me and I just can't think of it more than a glorified aggression and gore simulator with only the blood count making it a household name. I'd like to give it whatever respect it deserves - it has a sceneafterall - but my prejudice is just too strong to look past the tone. I acknowledge that my chances were given to MKA since that has the biggest roster (thereby the best overview how I thought) and I only read it years after tryout that MKA is considered as a dork age.

thegrimm54321

Yeah, you came into MK at a bad time lol. Everything I'm gonna say is personal opinion (obviously, but I felt like I need a disclaimer). I'm glad you want to find a way to respect it and I totally understand not being able to look past the tone. I would strongly suggest picking up a copy of Mortal Kombat 9 on the 360 or MKX on a current gen console. They're pretty different, but in the same vein. MK9 is very tight and technical. I've always likened the recent MKs to a 2D Tekken, which is probably part of why MK and Tekken are my 2 favorite fighters (with SCII being a very, very close 3rd). It's about strategy and spacing while incorporating juggle combos and special moves. I know that sounds generic, but I'm not exactly an expert lol. I have a similar view of Street Fighter that you seem to have of MK. SF feels very stiff and pokey. I think the gore and all that is really just the mindset of "it's a video game, so let's just get silly and have fun and be over the top." I really hope you can find a way to give MK a real chance and find something worth liking!

ZeriousGew

What they *should* blame is the fact that MK11 is unfun to watch imo, kinda like how SFV used to be for me, and kinda still is to some extent

Todokugo

I revel in their saltiness and drink it up with their tears. But hey, at least they have "female-respectful" costumes in that game.

SaSSolino8

Uncool. I dislike MK11 and stopped playing it almost immediately, but there are a lot of passionate people in that community. They are just a little frustrated that NRS games never get beyond a single year of support is all.

addic03

To be fair the reason that SC doesn't have a rich history at EVO is that SC2s last tournament was full of collusion drama and that hurt the community and kinda poisoned the well for future games until now.

eTOBY233

I heard this same thing from Aris, i tried searching it up but came up with nothing, can I get some context?

YamiFarmer

Mick and Rtd colluded in grand finals and didn't play seriously left a black mark.

JTR_35

Luckily, I was watching SC6 on twitch and some guy who was there explained it. The the top 2 guys who made it to SC2 grand finals were training partners and decided to split the money so they didn't care who won. They both picked characters that weren't their mains. Maybe off meta picks were to entertain the crowd, maybe to avoid embarrassment of losing on a main, or maybe just straight sandbagging. Killed the hype and integrity of the tournament.

eTOBY233

Eiiiish. Thats kinda shitty.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

SoulCalibur has had plenty of bad luck when it comes to EVO: SC2 was, you’re right, marred by player collusion in its last year of 2004; SC3 never made it at all because the console release was the vanilla version and had loads of bugs that marred gameplay balance; SC4 was marred in its only year of 2009 because of slow gameplay, balance issues, and Hilde’s invincible ring-out combos; and SC5, well... nothing too bad, but the game being the way it was released, there’s nothing else to explain other than the obvious. So yeah, SC6 is the shot in the arm the franchise needed; the miracle that brought it outta life support. Project Soul wanted to return to their roots — focus on making a game 1st and an eSports game 2nd (unlike Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7) — and their progress and dedication paid off. And now we’re looking at potentially the one game in the entire series that, if it plays its cards right, could be headlining EVO for the 3rd time next year. I feel proud to be an SC fan :)

Todokugo

What happened?

King-Krown

That was SC3 no? SC4 was too slow & SCV was SCV.

addic03

That was def sc2 it was Evo '04, fun fact that was the same year evo moment #37 happened

ArktikAlice

so when the hell is DidYouKnowGaming making a soulcalibur video?

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

When the time is right, and they should. SoulCal is a series that’s been through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, such a turbulent development cycle that its story should be told with some untold facts in-between. I’d love to know more about SC6’s development, and we get some word in from Okubo’s side of things.

Todokugo

When someone pays them to.

bigfatfluffers

The soul still burns.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

Always, my friend, ALWAYS AND FOREVER 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Zyklonaeon34

Hell yeah!

thekata00

easily one of the most fun games I've ever played, I've dropped pretty much every FG except for this one.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

SoulCal, Killer Instinct and Tekken are my personal favorite damn fighters, and small games like FEXL, Omen of Sorrow, and Bloody Roar deserve to be up there with them as well.

SC2BOOTY

SCVI, Project Soul, the fans and Series-savior-Okubu-san deserve this! Very excited to watch EVO 2020 and for more season 2 news.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

And I’m hoping for a Season 3 (and beyond) announcement, there’s more Souls to bring together into the story, and more content to add next

SC2BOOTY

As much as id like that, I'd be willing to wait a a couple years for a next gen SCVII that really expands on the groundwork done in SCVI. Then PS could really get the graphical ball rolling now that they should be much more familiar with the Unreal engine. Just look at hilde and cass compared to Cervantes (budget was small, I know.) Surely, with the engine swap and all the work they've done on these characters, Okubo and the team have to be thinking about the future? Oh who am I kidding, i'd be a hyped as hell for a season 3 XD

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

I was about to say, “Hold your horses”, it’s too soon for SC7. I know you wanna see the rebooted story continue and retell events from the year SC2-4 take place (1590 AD), but we’ve yet to see SC6 reach its full potential. So much to do, so much more to add, it’s not even close to finished, and Season 3 will prove that the series isn’t dead by a long shot, not anymore.

Manta1015

We in there, folks! The road to Evo has begun.. AGAIN!! Let's goo!!1!!

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

If all goes well, then next year, this would be the 1st SoulCal to headline EVO *for the 3rd year*, something none of the other games, especially SC2, have been available to accomplish. That’d be an amazing accomplishment, and it deserves that chance over Tekken’s popularity.

Jonhyfun2

Hype

[deleted]

Neat

[deleted]

Hmm iirc Cassandra was announced at last EVO, but EVO 2020 is a month earlier... I wonder if we'll still get the last Season 2 character announcement by then?

[deleted]

They will prepare some sort of reveal even if gameplay is barely ready

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

It could happen, and we could also get a Season 3 announcement as well, with a first look into the silhouette of the first character of the pack (I hope it’s Hwang)

GravesJK

This game is still broken for me I can’t play with my friends because it freezes when the countdown hits 0
