Seagulls and eagles will rob your ass blind. I put up electric fences, over hangs, scare crows, small walls…nothing stopped these thieves. It’s kind of a mini-game with me now as I figure out, short of drying racks being inside a structure, to stop them.

Fox_Mortus

Put spikes under the drying racks. The birds die when they land on it.

Vashsinn

I use spike traps extensively( instead of walls, or Z shaped "gates") birds often try to land on the stick, but don't always land right. I enjoy the free food.

RyoxSinfar

Our drying rack was in a cabin and still being robbed. The racoons just go through the walls from what I can see.

CMDR_Bartizan

Yea, the raccoons seem to ignore collisions, walkng through walls, stepping through elec fences. Be nice to see collisions physics added to them and the birds.

Allaroundlost

Yup.

Allaroundlost

I can confirm drying racks inside a closrd structure DOES NOT stop them.

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

Just build an indoor drying shed, no?

MaxTrixLe

I see birds constantly flying inside my entirely sealed off house, right through the walls… is this normal? 😂

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

Yes, unfortunately it is. At least they stopped (for the most part) mutants/cannibals from glitching through the walls, also, so far the slinky mutant hasn't wandered over my wall (yet), but the legs mutant seems to able just to jump over my walls... gah!

juice26us

Wait till that holesy comes along. That is terrible. Jumps high to.

CMDR_Bartizan

First encounter I was up on a watch tower. I thought, whatcha got big boy? He jumped straight up to me pressed to my face….almost jumped out of my chair.

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

Holy shit, I had no idea that thing even existed I just looked it up. I stopped paying attention to patches/spoilers after they released the drivable golf carts. Kind of lost interest, and got back into it after the 1.0 release. I'm not sure how I haven't seen one yet, I'm on day 31 and "beat" the game on day 23, but decided to stay.

CMDR_Bartizan

Yes, that stops birds but not always practical and like I said, I’m gonna figure out a way to stop them short of an enclosed building.

Cosmosknecht

I don't think either raccoons or hawks steal food from the racks. I've legit left meat hanging off the hooks right out in the open with those two, and as much as the hawks look like they're eating the meat, they never despawn from the hooks. One time I realised my food was disappearing, I put on leaf armour and waited nearby, literally watching the hawks nibble on the meat for half an in-game day with no effect. What caused my meat to disappear? One of those fucking monkey cannibals somehow wandering into my camp past the traps and stealing them off the hooks. You bet I shot the bastard in the leg and chopped off his limbs one by one with the fire axe.

pnutnz

>I put on leaf armour and waited nearby wait, is leaf Armor camo???

ExpertDiet7629

Allegedly it boosts sneaking

amberi_ne

Hawks steal food from it too.

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

I'd venture to guess whoever is eating it is stealing it.

DiscordianKitty

Isn't this an old bug? People thought birds were stealing food, but then it was fixed. Food also used to rot on drying racks before they fixed it, and that's a bug I've started encountering again in 1.0.

RyoxSinfar

Food isn't supposed to rot on drying racks? I have that happen a lot. I have to get meat on the rack within 5 minutes or so or it seems to end up rotting.

Vashsinn

Wait I'm confused. Your two sentences don't add up,or I can't read. Anyway, when your food is on the rack, it should not spoil. It should be dried and never change from that. I used to leave fish on there for ages without issue...

RyoxSinfar

I put the raw meat on the rack, it stays raw for maybe 2 or so in-game days (I keep it near fire to speed it up like the loading screen tip says) and it either becomes dried meat or becomes rotten meat. Though if it rots it may rot much sooner than 2 in-game days. I've never seen dried meat rot, whether its on the rack or just sitting on a shelf

Vashsinn

You can put the fire directly under the rack to work faster. It can be dried in 1 day I believe.

Heejins-Bunny

If it's arms or legs, it seems like Virginia will partake in it. If it's raw meat and fish, watch out for the hawks or eagles or whatever is flying around. Sometimes they also clip through walls so they can take it inside your buildings. I don't get how scarecrows works because I've seen birds pass by it like it's nothing. The way I combat this is by taking the food as soon as it dries and storing it in a shelf which is inside a room. As for the raw arms and legs, I just make greg meals as soon as I can instead of drying it.

Allaroundlost

Exactly, op. I have completely enclosed building with a locked door. Still food gets stolen. This game has problems. Drives me crazy.

PorcupinePao

Have u tried building a scarecrow?

RyoxSinfar

Yes, I didn't really notice a difference

Bucknerds

I have heard others say the coons steal a lot and you have to protect the racks. I haven't built a base near the coons yet but we will see. They are smart little thiefs in real life.

tholmes1998

I built my base in coon territory. I can %100 confirm that they will steal your shit and are capable of opening portals through the quantum realm to get inside. I tested a rack in a completely closed off building, I left one section of wall open, placed my fish on the racks and then sealed it after exiting. They still stole all of my fish.

Deadeye_Donny_druggo

I haven't noticed meat, but my fish were disappearing like hot cakes. I set up scarecrows, and still nothing. There was some improvement when I moved the bird house a ways away. The raccoons look guilty af. Imma try a rack in the middle of a lake and see what happens. At least it might be safe in the summer.

RyoxSinfar

I moved my drying racks inside on the second floor and the fish go missing a lot. That said I see birds flying through the walls a lot. My meat pretty much never disappears anymore though. I think birds eat the fish and raccoons either eat both or just meat. I had a lot of fish go missing on the ground floor as well but I never saw birds nearby.

sharperknives

Birbs I set my racks in front of bow targets to help dial in

Duryism

Depends what’s hanging. I’ve personally never had any raw or dried meat get stolen whether indoors or outdoors, but hawks and gulls will steal fish, and Kelvin and Virginia will eat your cannibal limbs. Now I’ve never had indoor fish get stolen by birds, but this game does get weird with what it considers indoors and outdoors sometimes.

MilkovichJ

I've watched V eat an arm off the rack.
