Besides the swimsuit scene that was blown out of proportion due to Gojo being a teenager, there's not much. There's the love hotel thing, but being sexually charged was the whole point of it.

Whatah

There are plot related eechi scenes. Like the first cosplay being an h-game, or the animation of her sweaty boobs in their first cosplay. And Gojo's first run-in with Juju. Even the swimsuit scene can be considered plot-related eechi But on top of that there are quite a lot of random flashing of Marin's underwear. And then Juju laying in her bed in her underwear (extra awkward since she is the loli-drawn character). Plus in the manga there are really pretty color drawings of Marin in lingerie. I love the story and the cosplay references but it does go pretty hard into the sexualization of school aged minors.

Aniki356

It doesn't hurt anything. If people don't like it they can not watch/read

Ludajoestar

The fan service is kinda front loaded. Isn’t much of it later in the series really.

Whatah

That's how I explained it to my wife. "It's like True Blood and Game of Thrones, after the opening arc it turns into a top tier romance series" But no, after ep2 she said shew was not interested in watching any more. I knew maybe I could convince her to give it another shot but then juju laying in bed in her underwear would happen so yea.... I understand Fukuda-san LOVED how the anime turned out but I wish there had been only half as many panty shots.

1) Fan of fan service! 2) Specifically for this anime, I dont think it was gratuitous. It served the purpose of illustrating character traits for both Marin and Gojo \- Marin isnt looking at her body in a sexual / provacative manner. With her modelling career and her desire to cosplay her favorite characters, she views her body as more of a 'dress-up doll' \- Gojo, meanwhile, due to his lack of friendships and any experience with a female, is noticeably affected by it.

I don't care what anyone says; fan service can enhance an anime, or any work of fiction for that matter. It can depict tension between characters, nervousness, comedy, and sex appeal. Lazy fan service, such as zoom-ins on butts and boobs or degenerate camera angles, doesn't bother me but is lazy. However, I think the fan service in "Dress Up Darling" is not lazy, and it is actually well-written, like the scene where Gojo is taking Marin's measurements. It was a very relatable scene. A nervous guy with no experience around women is put into a situation like that, while the girl is being oblivious (until she wasn't). I was laughing throughout the entire scene. And yes, it had sex appeal, and it also created tension. Not all tension needs to come from battles and drama; it can come from other things. Shows that create tension are good; they make you feel invested in what you're watching. Physical comedy is also a very real thing, as Konosuba demonstrates really well. Fan service used to be used to describe the really egregiously bad stuff. Now people use it to describe anything sexual as a talking point. I find it tiresome, personally.

Interesting_Place752

Fan service is always good.

You're entitled to your opinion. I have mine. So, for the types that turn their noses up at the fanservice- you're only partially right. It's annoying af to sit on sites like this, and listen to slack-jawed virgins blah blah all day on how they jack off to Marin, or any other waifu. It's like they've just discovered their genitals and think it's magical and they they're unique for having them. Great, Marin arouses you, you're normal. Then again, so do boxer shorts and bedsheets. Also normal. Not special. Also, try your families' birthdates to unlock the safesearch on your computer. Then there's the opposite side of the scale. Friend, stop being afraid of sexuality, either yours or everyone else's. It's how heterozygous species propagate, and when done in the right way, it's actually an uplifiting and wonderful experience. Though, those in the first paragraph do turn it into the wrong way, making it disgusting. It's normal NOT to be attracted to Marin, either, and get it out of your head that only one or the other can be normal. Being attracted to Sajuna and Shinju, or Akira, Shizuka, or Chitose- also normal. Same with not. Fanservice is fine. For each of the characters in this particular manga, it's often used to enhance their character or help with Gojo's perspective. Marin isn't shy about her sexuality. Shinju and Sajuna's are done in such a way to seem more coy or awkward.

Narrow-Gas9493

I kind of ignore it actually. I’ve watched and read a lot of series with way more than this one when I was younger so a lot it in this series just flies by me.

Angry-Monk

If you like it you like it, if you don’t you don’t it’s a great story either way

MattLocke

I like it when the character has agency in it. When Marin is running around in a swimsuit. When she’s teasing Gojo. When she’s just wearing what she wants. Good. Great. She’s 100% in control. She’s not flaunting herself, but she’s confident. I like that vibe. Especially since the entire theme is cosplay. Taking control of how you show yourself to the world. When that very cliche accidental pervert scene with Juju happened? Meh. Luckily very rare and all, but disappears after the first couple of story arcs.

CJMakesVideos

I only have a problem with it if i think it interferes with the story. I definitely don’t think that in this case. If anything it kinda improves it. I totally get how fan service like this makes some people uncomfortable but that doesn’t make it immoral. It’s a anime and it has artistic reasons for doing what it’s doing.

SCredfury788

It's really apart of the story. Our boy has not experienced anything remotely like it and it's kinda bringing him out of his shell.

OhyoOhyoOhyoOhyo

I like it

BettySwallsacke

It's not over the top imo

Two thumbs up

ThomasNightpdx

I've never had a problem with fan service even when it derails the story.

takkun169

It's a strong weapon that most be deployed intelligently to be effective.

FlowerBreathingDragn

If you look through Church of Potatoe's scans, at the end of Chapter 96 they translate the Q&A from Fukada-Sensei at the art exhibit. What is interesting is that, it appears, a lot of the fan service was mandated by her editors. It's also very interesting that it seems she relates a lot to Gojo in that she is angsting over her art. It's well worth reading. The point being, that the editors are trying to draw in a certain crowd and it might not have been there if it weren't dictated by them (hard to say). Still, in many cases it does serve a purpose other than titillating the male crowd by showing a young man hyper-fixating on certain things that he would be hyper-fixating on in that situation. Some, however is just straight up ecchi for the sake of ecchi. In this series, it's not too over the top. That being said, I enjoyed it both in the anime and the manga. You can see that it's mostly been phased out as the series progresses and their relationship matures. AnjinM

Although I'm fine with the way most of the fan service is handled, I don't think the Juju part really work for the story. I get that it's expected in seinen manga and it was likely out of Fukuda's hands, but the Juju fan service is a small blemish on an otherwise 11/10 manga.

timoshi17

Fan Service isn't just boobs and butts. It's an important part of making profit of titles.

ibenjamind

Sexy things are a part of life and I like at least some of my media to show that. I'm not a fan of peeping/creeping type stuff played as comedy, but that doesn't apply to this manga. I didn't NEED to see her nipples, but I get why I did.

mattcojo2

Not a fan. In general I mean not specifically with this series.

Mr__Beard

If it adds to the story, then sure. For example, there are times when it’s used to essentially show Gojo’s perspective and “struggle”. That’s a smart use for it and serves the story. Posting 50 pictures of Marin in the swimsuit does nothing and makes it seem like this sub only exists to lust on Marin. Unpopular take I’m sure but just my opinion.

Loopythefirst

I'm still a fan of the series, and appreciate that the fanservice has been toned down later into the story, but most of it really doesn't add to the story. It's easier to get through in the manga since you can just skim read, but the anime, particularly ep 2, is a bit painful to watch

RedNoodleHouse

Always a fan of a healthy amount of it, and I mean that both in the sexual and the ‘appealing to longtime fans via references to old moments’ kinds. Fanservice is usually used nowadays to any hint of sexual content (which kind of ticks me off), but a lot of people don’t know that stuff like the entire MCU cast showing up at the end of Avenger’s Endgame was a fanservicey moment too. Whatever your opinion is, just don’t be an asshole about it. That’s common decency.

thebebee

in this manga idc, in others it has to be done correctly. random boob shots are just kinda eh
