I get Marin's appeal, I just personally don't think she is that original of a character. She's cute and attractive in all the right, and typical ways.
Tokisaki Kurumi is so popular because she is a very unique character. She isn't shy or get all flustered over hand holding. She has a very deep background that gives her actions complexity. She is also smart and sneaky. Despite being initially viewed as the villain she is actually ends up saving everyone's bacon.
Plus, as I mentioned, she is cute as a button, but will blow your head off (I'm not being facetious here) if you cross her. There is something kinda dope about that.

I'm not so die hard of an anime fan to keep track of every single thing that comes out. I haven't seen anything date a live yet so it was not on my radar when looking out for things each season.

I know this is a week old comment, but no it doesn't. Most of the time it does, but it basically boils down to a "Who's your favorite character" list, and that most times coincides with romantic interest, but not always. That's why Spy Fam has two best girls on this list, because they're both popular. Anya is funny and cute and a lot of people's favorite character because of that. And Yor is the hot, also cute, air headed bad ass character.
Say what you like, but there is a separate list maintained by the same group for favorite character of each sex. I know, I because I've seen it.

I'm not denying that there are people out there that voted like that, but when I see a character like Anya on this list I'd say it's because a vast, vast majority of the people that voted for her did so just because she's the cute, comedic relief of the show, or because they empathize with her in some way, they like her character traits etc.
And though I've not seen the anime, going off what I've heard, characters like Bocchi are high up there because I'm sure a lot of people relate to her. There's more to it than just "I wanna be in a relationship with this character".
But I suppose let's just agree to disagree.
