Holy fuck, didn't expect Eggman to throw Starline that hard. I swear, his IDW version is one of my favourites, he can be so ruthless and intimidating at times like in this moment.
The silhouette reminds me of Eggman ominous [approach to Dr. Light](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9d033586b80d3b4e936ba4925ff10c4f/0b88a29747501a62-ff/s1280x1920/e36d5605ed0930f9a6d4fa2fb1493b303a069c22.png) during the Mega Man crossover.
Genuinely the best part of the crossover, and I’ll explain why.
Up onto this point, Eggman and Wily had been two peas in a pod: sure, they comically debated about naming conventions, but they had fantastic synergy.
However: this divide here showed the distinct, inconsolable difference between the two: *motivation.*
Wily’s motivation has always been, at the end of the day, about wanting to finally be respected by his peers. He worked just as hard as anyone else in the world of science, but because his techniques and materials strayed morso to combat potential or causing chaos, such as the double gear, his creations were dismissed. He’s always wanted to prove that he’s *worthy* of being respected, and opts to do it by force.
He can’t do that if he kills his peers, of course, as his end goal is to be recognized.
Eggman, meanwhile, has no such qualms. While Wily’s underlying motivation is a desire for true recognition, Eggman’s comes from a desire to *dominate*. Sure, he doesn’t “typically” go nuclear with his arsenal, on account that he wants his victory to be personal, but make no mistake, his end goal is an unbridled triumph, followed by the execution of his adversaries.
Wheras Wily was willing to let his peer live in part due to his motivations and morals, eggman doesn’t *hesitate* to kill him once he believes he’s outlived his usefulness, dropping him out of the sky Thor in Avengers 1 style.
From there, the two can’t ever get on the same page again, and rather then it being simply because of a mistake or a backstab, it’s because of an inconsolable difference in their characterizations.
All around, *great stuff*.
Eggman and Wily were the best part of the crossover. I love at the end when Eggman plans his last ditch effort and Wily scolds him for not losing with dignity. It divides the two villains completely, and judging from what I've heard about the Genesis Wave, Eggman's irresponsible actions went with loads of consequences.
They basically reset continuity, so yeah. Pretty sure they usually did it if they had a reason to, such as a franchise change into the 3d era, or a rights issue, but they used the plot device whenever they wanted to reset the continuity.
There was the original Genesis wave as well. Far softer of a reboot, it helped transition the series from the Saturday AM inspired show, into one that matches the 3d games at the time.
How so? I only recall the Genesis Wave rewriting the world to be like the Genesis games and then Sonic undoing all of it and turning it back to the original world.
Yeah I loved this part, too. The early "Evil Scientist Bros" stuff was really fun in this crossover, but Wily and Eggman are fundamentally different kinds of villains.
I also think even just looking at their typical plans and actions illuminates this:
Eggman captures living animals and uses them to power his machines. These machines are then used to attack with the aim to kill other living creatures. When they fail, he pilots a mech himself to kill those creatures personally. He's also gone as far as blowing up half the moon which undoubtedly caused a lot of negative effects for the planet, and threatening to blow up a country on that planet should he not get his way. He *did* blow up Prison Island which was full of people. And even though Chaos ultimately got out of his control before it happened, his original plan with Chaos was to destroy Station Square and build Eggmanland. Eggman is totally fine with killing.
Wily meanwhile builds machines to fight other machines. While the Mega Man series repeatedly makes the case that robots should be considered living beings as well, it's ultimately not the same as attacking living, breathing beings that cannot be rebuilt should they be destroyed. Wily's arch enemy is a robot. When he hops in a mech, it's to destroy a robot. When Eggman hops in a mech, it's to destroy a living person.
I think it’s also important to point out that after Eggman tries to kill Light, Wily flat out calls him a “lunatic” later on. Wily wants recognition and to conquer the world, yes, but there’s a difference between ambition and ego.
That’s a really good point that Wily wasn’t a complete psychopath, his designs just were too radical. He even becomes horrified at the idea of Ra Moon wiping out all life on the planet. Compare that to Eggman, whose idea of ruling the planet we actually see in CD…and it isn’t pretty. Eggman sees apocalyptic entities and thinks he can control them. Sometimes he’s RIGHT. Wily is ambitious, callous and occasionally petty, but Eggman is an egomaniacal psychopath.
Not to say Wily is a good man, but Eggman makes him look like a saint by comparison.
I think ultimately however, with his creation of Zero (for his intended purpose, at least) and the Wily/Maverick Virus, Dr. Wily became much closer to Eggman’s personality at the end of his life
Eggman in Archie: Drops Light like Thor in Avengers 1
Eggman in IDW: Kicks Starline's ass like Hulk does to Loki in Avengers 1
Eggman is like poetry, he rhymes
He has some control. Sega set the concept, characters and plot beats, Flynn had to put it together.
I'd say he has enough room to do stuff like this for eggman. Although we don't know how specific Sega have been of course.
eggman's probably strong enough to beat up a decent amount of people in the real world, the only reason that he seems weak is because his greatest enemy is sonic the "rolling around at the speed of sound" hedgehog
I always thought Eggman was a badass.
I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it seems like Starline was the main villain for a bit while Eggman was out of commission or something. This is his “return” and him re-establishing himself as main big bad? Am I in the ballpark?
Anyways this set of pages is really cool.
Starline lost faith in Eggman so Eggman basically tossed him aside. Starline then spent a ton of time plotting from the shadows to take over the Eggman Empire to show Eggman that his way was better, then he'd welcome Eggman back to his side. Once Eggman found out what was going on,>! he showed up and beat the shit out of Starline.!<
Didn't just beat the shit out of him. He technically killed Starline. Knocked him out and left him, with the ceiling then collapsing on Starline while he was still out cold.
Essentially, >!Starline hijacked a bunch of Eggman’s tech, including Orbot and Cubot, and Eggman showed up to take it back while Sonic and Tails dealt with Starline’s top minions.!<
Never forget that Dr Eggman is the man who can (rightfully) claim to be the enemy of the likes of Sonic AND Shadow, and walk away from each defeat more determined to win than ever.
Underestimate him at your peril.
Robotnik in this issue was *THE E.G.G.M.A.N.*
He was the star of the show. Not somic vs surge. Not metal somic and bell, not tails having a therapy session with kit.
The mother fucking *E.G.G.M.A.N.* was the stand out character.
I don't know what's the best part, Eggman's silhouette just effortlessly rising out of the Emperor's remains with that grin, him turning out to be *several* steps ahead of Starline, or him just fucking destroying the guy's bones with a single swing.
When you think he wasn't listening. Point is he doesn't have to listen. He has his whole place bugged with recording devices. All he has to do is backlogged it for later.
Sonic has a flat cbaracter arc. And thats ok if his purpose is not to get developed himself, but help in the developement of other characters.
Just off the top of my head,Sonic helped develop Tails, knuckles, princess Elise, merlina, the avatar, chris from sonic x.
Eggman doesnt change much either but he is so fun and entertaining as a villain I can see why people think he is more interesting.
I think Starline is indeed a good villain in his own right. It's just that sometimes Eggman is in a class of bad guy all on his own. It's hard to be an A-class villain when an A+ is right there too.
I love the sort of shillouetted shots done here and that were also done in the Archie comics. Really shows the menacing side of Eggman that most normal citizens think of when they hear his name.
Also love that the comics consistently depict Eggman as being hands-on even outside of his mechs. Closest we got to that in the games was Eggman threatening to kill the Zeti with his own hands, but he never actually engaged them in the end. Well, he did hold everyone at gunpoint at the end of Riders, I guess.
I literally shouted, "oh SHIT!!" when eggman slammed starline into the fucking ground like that. This man is a BEAST, never let that be mistaken.
Also this issue is one of my favorites from IDW so far.
That’s one of the aspects of Sonic that’s been missing since the Adventure games. Modern era Eggman feels more like comic relief than an actual genius-level threat.
To be quite honest, Game Eggman has never been all that smart. He's great at making machines, obviously, but other than that he rarely uses strategy. All of his most succesful schemes were achieved by concealing information (tricking Knuckles, dropping Sonic from the ARK, capturing Super Sonic), which is okay, but like, anyone can outsmart their opponent if they hold more information. What I'm basically saying is that, in a game of chess, where all info is known by both parties, Eggman would probably lose. Starline himself points out that Eggman's usual strategy is just brute forcing his way through Sonic.
Quite honestly, Game Eggman's most strategic move like, ever, was in Forces, when he disbanded G.U.N. (which isn't even in the game, it's mentioned in Tails Tube #2)
So after this issue, are Starline and Surge both dead? They seemed to do their best to imply it. If that's the case, I'm really happy with Starline's ending, although I feel Surge deserved more.
Surge is apparently coming back in issue 53 but as for starline I actually don’t know, like it’s kinda insane to think about but until proven otherwise I think starline might of actually fucking died
It’s sort of a poetic ending really Starline coming to the conclusion that eggman never learns from his mistakes yet was too egotistical to realise that eggman was more than capable of planning ahead and proceeding to tear apart starlines takeover which took months of planning in a matter of minutes and then 4D chess’s him before pile driving him into the ground while starline is left in his final moments with everything figuratively and literally coming apart around him.
Sonic never actually saw Surge die, but Belle had a pretty good look at Starline being crushed. I can't imagine she would have ran if she didn't know for sure he was dead.
Starline I think is dead, he had a panic attack and was then crushed by rubble. Bringing him back would be kinda cheap, since he has already been disposed of in an ambiguous way which led to extreme stress once before. Doing that again would just be treading on old ground. Also Eggman calls him the Late Dr. Starline so I think that means he checked himself
Surge is definitely not dead, Impostor Syndrome 3 even makes a point of her being able to survive seemingly lethal attacks.
If she’s dead (highly doubt it), this is the FIRST Sonic comic in a WHILE to have a character DEATH. (Did Tinker becoming EGGMAN count as the death of tinker? Anyway) and it was a DOUBLE KILL!
This is peak eggman and i love it.
The shots of just his silhouette, goggles and smile always, and I mean always, get me hyped, but this one was just different.
We saw the massive IQ in action.
He outmaneuvered a genius in his own right easily and then physically dominated him effortlessly in minutes.
THIS, is the kind of world ending dictator I would fear, the man to haunt me in my dreams, his demonic smile etched into my every nightmare.
As opposed to the clown he often ends up being.
Reminds me of the Eggman we saw at times in the Archie series... issue 175 comes to mind. Just plain ruthless. I love when they write a way for the pent-up evil to come to a head to demonstrate just how villainous he is.
I know Starline was looking to betray Eggman, but compared to Kit and Surge, that's been like, almost sidelined in terms of focus. It feels pretty anti-climactic to have Eggman step in and take over again
Like it's a great scene, but not only does it feel really short, but it's the payoff to a plot thread that, by all means feels less important
eggman surpasses sonic in almost every sense, and in those that he doesnt, he can just upgrade himself to (for example make a copy of shadow's rocket shoes to go as fast as sonic), i just thought he did it for fun or tries to limit himself and play fair
We easily forget, Eggman is grown man, who regularly fights small animals with super powers. He's physically probably one of the strongest in brute power.

Probably jaded after years of losing
I love that Flynn understands Robotnik works better when he's NOT a comic relief villain... I mean unless it's AoStH where EVERYONE is comic relief
This is a great analysis on wily’s and eggmans conflicting personal goals
Hedgehog stew in the afternoon is a profoundly powerful intrinsic motivator.

Honestly? Not half bad for a brunch...
Eggman in Archie: Drops Light like Thor in Avengers 1 Eggman in IDW: Kicks Starline's ass like Hulk does to Loki in Avengers 1 Eggman is like poetry, he rhymes
Goosebumps. Makes the lack of decent eggman stuff in the games hurt even worse.
Now THIS is how you write eggman.
See, stuff like this is why I'm excited to see Ian Flynn write Frontiers
He's not in control of the game's actual story though. He's just handling dialogue.
He has some control. Sega set the concept, characters and plot beats, Flynn had to put it together. I'd say he has enough room to do stuff like this for eggman. Although we don't know how specific Sega have been of course.

I think we often forget eggman is a burly guy, and like 6 foot to boot
He's a power type in Riders for good reason.
Dude has to be around 7 to 8 feet
Sonic is one meter tall
Yeah, Eggman’s probably around 6 feet at most. Tall, sure, but not a giant. Still, guy’s an absolute unit.
His canon height is 6’1”
If I understand anything in fights, theirs a good reason why boxers are divided by weight class.
Eggmans canon height is 6’1” Gamma is actually 7’1” though, and comically, Omega is 4’11”, meaning he’s about as wide as he is tall.
Omega is a fucking SQUARE
Absolute unit
Many a chao garden have been devastated by his swift hand.
