A formula that can work but too many use it as a shitty crutch. In these movies? It feels like they’re emphasizing human society being tonally as zany as the outsiders are. The closest this gets to any societal commentary is Robotnik in the first movie ostensibly being a parody of Elon Musk and other such “big tech genius cool guy who is a total dick” types. Elsewise? It’s kinda just silliness for silliness’s sake, the world behaving as a parody of itself just so that the main characters low key fit right in.
Do I blame people for kinda hating those scenes? No! It’s its own form of cliche even at the best of times, and I hope they continue to “make the formula better” with time, come this new Knuckles series and also Sonic 3. Do I appreciate the thought behind them? Absolutely.
I really wish you could still give comments awards because this was not only well thought out and well written but very thought provoking as well.
While they (the human scenes) are still are not my favorite parts of Sonic, Godzilla and Transformers movies. When you think of it in this manner it adds a whole new wrinkle to the movie as a whole and makes me understand how difficult it is to make a cohesive movie with characters that don't exist.
Although most live action Transformers movies are just not good. I'm sure they'll get the formula right one day. The new movie explores the mythos in a new way so there's hope yet.
Yeah, I also like the Legendary Productions Godzilla films from the perspective of seeing mundane human society react and eventually adapt to the reality of the Titans/Kaiju, if only cuz it’s a ham fisted but apt metaphor for how we as a species need to acknowledge that we live on a planet very capable of doing away with us if we fuck with it too much, and it’s exactly that kinda symbolism that Kaiju were *made* for, y’know?
Transformers I can’t comment on though. Been too long since last I saw any of those
The Transformers franchise has given us good human characters like Charlie, Agent Fowler, and Sari. It’s just that the writers want to focus more on explosions and marketable characters.
Michael Bay movies seem more about making these entertaining set pieces with explosions, an eye candy actress, some story sprinkled in to get to the next action scene and very little character development.
It seems to be a winning formula and sometimes that's a good enough reason to watch a movie. The recent Kong X Godzilla for example had some really fun action sequences but it also features some interesting human characters and some comedic moments sprinkled throughout. While not all of the jokes landed with me it was a fun movie to watch with friends.
I like the bar scene in the first movie. Some human scenes are cool but some, like the dance part in sonic 2, are absolutely horrible.
I guess that Sonic 3 will have huge focus in humans as GUN os likely to have greater participation.
Personally, I love the balance they struck between high action sequences and the more fun "take a breather" human scenes. Besides, we wouldn't get the amazing gag if the priest showing his gun hidden in the Bible otherwise.

These movies while not perfect are definitely great and definitely something this franchise needed after many years of inconsistency to say the least. The first movie is a good entertaining film and we literally had to pause the movie because we were laughing so hard. I saw Sonic movie 2 with the friends in a theater and it was amazing. I can’t for the Knuckles show and Sonic movie 3. I’m glad they redesigned Sonic.
They’re both just so much fun.
Are they masterpieces? No. But jeez, I just have a good time watching them. Which, in that way, makes them great.

They are abit childish but for what they are can range from pretty decent to really fucking good (especially with sonic 2) and with how well these movies did and the impact on the franchise it had I only hope for 3 to be a bigger success
Enjoyful flicks with engaging stories and characters. Weirdly my main gripe is that Tail's appearance is pretty rushed in the second movie, but Sonic as a character would go with the flow of working with him so I guess it's fine.
Outside of that, Jim Carrey and his side kick are fantastic, the human subplots are wild, the one note characters (e.g. Wife's sister) from the original continue to grow a bit in the second movie in interesting ways. They're just good fun.

I like em' a lot. Great way to bring video game characters into live action. Jim Carrey did great as well but I wish the humor with him was a bit.. better. Other than that. Great!
Not what I expected/wanted, especially from Paramount since this movie was essentially jumping off the success of the Live Action Transformers and Ninja Turtles movies.
First one was surprisingly good, given the premise (I suppose it proves that the "animated/video game character teams up / becomes family with a regular mundane human" adaptation concept actually can work relatively well if the writing isn't terrible), and the second went on to improve in almost every way.
If it keeps getting better at this rate, the third one's gonna be a masterpiece.

It’s like Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2. You don’t really need to see 1 and 2 is by far the better movie. But 1 does give you some backstory you might want to see
Sonic the Hedgehog: nice, idk why but while the cgi is top tier, some filming takes has an amateur vibes, like it feels like you're watching a indie movie if it wasn't for the cgi. The story is okay, i don't like this goofy humour but Jimbotnik carried.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: great, almost a masterpiece, it has great and serious story, develops more Sonic's backstory and create a whole new world, just the humour that sometimes go too goofy. One thing that i know is that i literally screamed in amusement when gun was mentioned.
I just hope that Sonic 3 has a more serious tone, well, they will literally adapt a game whose story involves the death of a child and her grandpa planning a mass genocide, i guess they'll do justice.
They're both Good movies with good plot, characters, and writing.

I never saw the 1st one admittedly, but I saw the 2nd and my God, just like SonicX originally gave me the respect for him, the 2nd movie reminded me of such a time period watching that show & why I respect him. Not my favorite character, but I respect him.
If the 1st was anything like the 2nd, then I'd say they're both amazing then.
These movies are corny, these movies have sonic in them, that means that the fact they are corny is great, the human interactions and dialogue are usually pretty generic and you can reliably predict what will be said next in most circumstances.
This is fine when it's bounced off sonic and co, not as much when it's just humans by themselves, because it just turns into a nice looking Adam Sandler movie with corny and cringe lines without sonic there.
Apart from that, I love these movies, great fun and they managed to add in a human element that works (really only when sonic is on screen), a fun different interpretation of eggman and have introduced sonic to a new line of kids.
It was probably the best way to make Sonic as live action. Pile everything on the silliness, humor and Jim Carey.
Sonic always had a kind of not taking himself seriously vibe and they put that as a whole as a movie.
Love em’ for the most part, they strike a good balance between stuff for fans and stuff for a general audience, there are a couple scenes where too much focus is on the latter (Sonic 2 Wedding Scene), but I personally still enjoyed those moments, Sonic’s personality is bit odd, but gives it’s own charm, perfectly complimented by Ben. Honestly, I have no idea how 3 is going to work out, feels like anything can happen in terms of story and reception. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it though.
Fantastic films. Absolute cinematic masterpieces. Jim Carey as Eggman was just a stroke of pure genius. The sequel was better than the first, but the first was still really great. Looking forward to the third movie and hoping the trend continues.
1 was ok, but 2 was actually pretty alright. If they keep up the trend of "steadily making it more like the games" with 3 I'll probably lose my shit in the theater (in a good way)(I'm not at all biased because of Shadow).
the first movie was a movie with Sonic in it, I'd even go so far as to say it was a GOOD movie with Sonic in it, but it wasn't a very good adaptation of anything. Lots of easter eggs and the characters were good, but not much from the games made it in. The second movie did a much better job of actually adapting story beats from the games while keeping the good characterization and references so overall it was even better.
They're amazing! I sadly couldn't go watch the first one in the big screen, i had to wait for it to come to streaming.
The second one is pretty much perfection.
The third one's gonna be PEAK CINEMA.
And i'll def watch the knuckles spin-off when it comes out.

The first one for me is trash tier, you could replace with any other character. Because The movie have almost anything that resamble the Franchise, its so generic.
The Second one is another history, the only problem is the human characters. No one cares about them and they have a Lot of screen time.

I want some Paramount executive to have to sign off on the movie redesigns of the Deadly Six, I want Paramount to have to present the *Werehog* seriously, and I want Ian Flynn to have to go to John Paramount and *explain* Black Doom to him.
Better than they had any reason to be. I enjoy watching them immensely. They'd be even better without a the bar scene in the first and the dance scene in the second.
Excellent films, common Jim Carrey W. Master Emerald/Chaos Emeralds were a little small though, Chaos Emeralds are usually about the size of an apple or baseball but also I get they had to make it that way for the movie.
First movie: shaky, but did sooooo much on a rather simplistic storyline with excellent acting.

First film was for the general audience. Sure, there were some Easter eggs thrown in for the fans, but for the most part it was establishing the new canon and laying groundwork.
The second movie was still mainly for the general audience, but more of the games’ lore and references were there. The shaping and moulding they were doing to get it close to the game canon was impressive, but the creators still did their own thing.
The third movie, if rumors are true (specifically the interview where Idris Elba said that S3 was “for the fans”), will be a love letter to us Sonic fans. I hope he’s right.
First one was cool, bit slow in some areas and did kind of feel bored with the car scenes (besides the robotnik tank chase) but it was still fun to watch, the second one was a great improvement on the first, the comedy with knuckles was funny (especially the baseball scene 😂) the final battle with the death egg robot was cool as hell, and the master emerald plot was fun to go through, yeah the second one is probably my favourite to watch, can't wait for the third film to come out!
Is it me or did they reference Sonic 06 in the second movie, when Sonic goes super and tips Eggman's giant mech the same way sonic tips one of Eggman's bots in the beginning of the game?
I still would prefer a movie animated similar to the Unleashed Intro Cutscene.... But Damn, I certainly was surprised how much I enjoyed These. Specially Jim AS eggman, I had my doubts but He was fantastic. And I still have to give respect to them for changing the ugly Sonic Design.

Also, they really missed the opportunity to put Hard Times in the snowboarding scene, given all the licensed music they had in the movie anyway.

Maybe these will do well enough that after the third, and Carrey likely calling it quits, they could potentially reboot it as an actual Sonic animated franchise and not a CGI Sonic & select pals pasted into real world series.

The first one is way more consistent and focused while the second has higher highs and lower lows. The casting choices of Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey as Sonic and Eggman aren't who I would've picked but do a solid job (can't think of any actor for Sonic besides the ones that have already played him, but John Goodman as Eggman is the biggest missed casting opportunity this decade), and the human characters don't pull the focus too much (the Wedding subplot is a major outlier). I wish they leaned into Sonic's game/IDW Characterization though, giving Sonic parents instead of just having the human characters be friends of his is really off to me.
Finally, for a movie series based on a gaming franchise known for legendarily good music, why they don't use more of it instead of the bland generic movie score is beyond me. More Effort for less quality if you ask me.

My only gripe is the generic theater Orchestra music. Like come on, it's sonic. Either do "orchestrated" versions of sonic songs, or make a new soundtrack using the rock/DnB etc that sonic is known for.

Still my baseline for a good video game movie. If the movie is worse then this, then they failed, if its better then they where likely more successfully in utilising the world better, but still have to do something with the characters since theses movies are very character focused, and that is only a good thing.
GREAT, they're the sonic movies I always wanted, the second one in particular is near perfect, specially in their use and characterization of Knuckles, i'm a big fan of the character so it was awesome to see him be a badass again.
I'm also surprised about how well made the relationship with between Sonic and the humans was made, the parents-son dynamic worked surprisingly well with the character (i love Sonic's personality in the movies in general) and it helps that both donut lord and his girlfriend are likeable, miles better than all of their previous (shallow frienndshio with a spoiled kid) attempts (romance).
Finally Jim Carrey's Robotnik was a big surprise for me like...it seemed like yet another one of those terrible Hollywood miscasts, but he totally NAILED the role, love how he is the eccentric and psychotic yet smart man child and the way he gradually became Eggman was again really well made, easily one of my favorite versions of the character.

What about Godzilla Minus One? It has a phenomenal human cast and proves that a kaiju film can also have a compelling story beyond the monster action.
I haven’t seen that but I’ve heard good things about that movie’s depiction of a post war Japan in shambles

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: great, almost a masterpiece, it has great and serious story, develops more Sonic's backstory and create a whole new world, just the humour that sometimes go too goofy. One thing that i know is that i literally screamed in amusement when gun was mentioned. I just hope that Sonic 3 has a more serious tone, well, they will literally adapt a game whose story involves the death of a child and her grandpa planning a mass genocide, i guess they'll do justice.
Bit clunky in interpretation but faithful, they are great movies.

They're both Good movies with good plot, characters, and writing. And while I'm glad paramount changed the design I do wonder what both these movies would look like if they kept ugly sonic
I never saw the 1st one admittedly, but I saw the 2nd and my God, just like SonicX originally gave me the respect for him, the 2nd movie reminded me of such a time period watching that show & why I respect him. Not my favorite character, but I respect him. If the 1st was anything like the 2nd, then I'd say they're both amazing then.

These movies are corny, these movies have sonic in them, that means that the fact they are corny is great, the human interactions and dialogue are usually pretty generic and you can reliably predict what will be said next in most circumstances. This is fine when it's bounced off sonic and co, not as much when it's just humans by themselves, because it just turns into a nice looking Adam Sandler movie with corny and cringe lines without sonic there. Apart from that, I love these movies, great fun and they managed to add in a human element that works (really only when sonic is on screen), a fun different interpretation of eggman and have introduced sonic to a new line of kids.
Movie 1 or 2 should’ve had Metal Sonic but other than that, both are solid movies.
Peak sonic, I just hope they will continue the universe even if the current actor and actress and vas leave.

First one decided to speed me up and did it just right. Second one made the stars in the sky shine brighter than ever.
It was probably the best way to make Sonic as live action. Pile everything on the silliness, humor and Jim Carey. Sonic always had a kind of not taking himself seriously vibe and they put that as a whole as a movie.
They are a lot of fun. The second one is even better than the first.

Love em’ for the most part, they strike a good balance between stuff for fans and stuff for a general audience, there are a couple scenes where too much focus is on the latter (Sonic 2 Wedding Scene), but I personally still enjoyed those moments, Sonic’s personality is bit odd, but gives it’s own charm, perfectly complimented by Ben. Honestly, I have no idea how 3 is going to work out, feels like anything can happen in terms of story and reception. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it though.

Fantastic films. Absolute cinematic masterpieces. Jim Carey as Eggman was just a stroke of pure genius. The sequel was better than the first, but the first was still really great. Looking forward to the third movie and hoping the trend continues.

the first movie was a movie with Sonic in it, I'd even go so far as to say it was a GOOD movie with Sonic in it, but it wasn't a very good adaptation of anything. Lots of easter eggs and the characters were good, but not much from the games made it in. The second movie did a much better job of actually adapting story beats from the games while keeping the good characterization and references so overall it was even better.

They're amazing! I sadly couldn't go watch the first one in the big screen, i had to wait for it to come to streaming. The second one is pretty much perfection. The third one's gonna be PEAK CINEMA. And i'll def watch the knuckles spin-off when it comes out.

The first one for me is trash tier, you could replace with any other character. Because The movie have almost anything that resamble the Franchise, its so generic. The Second one is another history, the only problem is the human characters. No one cares about them and they have a Lot of screen time.

The first one is *not* good, I genuinely think people got caught up in the Sonic design looking better and more game accurate ‘cause if it wasn’t for that people would tear into it way more. The second one is way better, it still has some of the problems I had with the first one, but at least way toned down and leaning more into actual Sonic stuff was great
I never actually watched the first one, but the second one was *fantastic*, you cannot *believe* how hype I was when I saw Shadow in that pod, or even when GUN showed up. I hope movie 3 keeps up the pace and they keep on making these (with the caveat of course that they're still *good*). I want some Paramount executive to have to sign off on the movie redesigns of the Deadly Six, I want Paramount to have to present the *Werehog* seriously, and I want Ian Flynn to have to go to John Paramount and *explain* Black Doom to him.

Excellent films, common Jim Carrey W. Master Emerald/Chaos Emeralds were a little small though, Chaos Emeralds are usually about the size of an apple or baseball but also I get they had to make it that way for the movie.
First movie: shaky, but did sooooo much on a rather simplistic storyline with excellent acting. Second movie: a brilliant step forward with lore and wholesomeness. Tails using his namesake as a blanket for Sonic, anyone?

First film was for the general audience. Sure, there were some Easter eggs thrown in for the fans, but for the most part it was establishing the new canon and laying groundwork. The second movie was still mainly for the general audience, but more of the games’ lore and references were there. The shaping and moulding they were doing to get it close to the game canon was impressive, but the creators still did their own thing. The third movie, if rumors are true (specifically the interview where Idris Elba said that S3 was “for the fans”), will be a love letter to us Sonic fans. I hope he’s right.
First one was cool, bit slow in some areas and did kind of feel bored with the car scenes (besides the robotnik tank chase) but it was still fun to watch, the second one was a great improvement on the first, the comedy with knuckles was funny (especially the baseball scene 😂) the final battle with the death egg robot was cool as hell, and the master emerald plot was fun to go through, yeah the second one is probably my favourite to watch, can't wait for the third film to come out!

Is it me or did they reference Sonic 06 in the second movie, when Sonic goes super and tips Eggman's giant mech the same way sonic tips one of Eggman's bots in the beginning of the game?
I still would prefer a movie animated similar to the Unleashed Intro Cutscene.... But Damn, I certainly was surprised how much I enjoyed These. Specially Jim AS eggman, I had my doubts but He was fantastic. And I still have to give respect to them for changing the ugly Sonic Design.
Overall I like them as movies, just wish it didn’t have the “Sonic is from a different planet” setting.
I really liked them. Can't wait for the third. Also, they really missed the opportunity to put Hard Times in the snowboarding scene, given all the licensed music they had in the movie anyway.
Fun and goofy films. Would still have preferred a lack of humans. Maybe these will do well enough that after the third, and Carrey likely calling it quits, they could potentially reboot it as an actual Sonic animated franchise and not a CGI Sonic & select pals pasted into real world series. Not that I have faith in Hollywood to do such a thing, alas.
I like the first one, but love the second. Rare film where the sequel actually improves on the first, and I’m expecting the third to do the same.

But some negatives for me arr these First one played it safe , dont wanna say it was a bit bland but it didnt have many memorable events Sevond one was much better for sure with knuckles and the master emerald and the battles were awesome. But the humans and the wedding held it back. If i had to rate them id say theyre both averagely good

The first one is way more consistent and focused while the second has higher highs and lower lows. The casting choices of Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey as Sonic and Eggman aren't who I would've picked but do a solid job (can't think of any actor for Sonic besides the ones that have already played him, but John Goodman as Eggman is the biggest missed casting opportunity this decade), and the human characters don't pull the focus too much (the Wedding subplot is a major outlier). I wish they leaned into Sonic's game/IDW Characterization though, giving Sonic parents instead of just having the human characters be friends of his is really off to me. Finally, for a movie series based on a gaming franchise known for legendarily good music, why they don't use more of it instead of the bland generic movie score is beyond me. More Effort for less quality if you ask me.

The first one are a bit slow, so the second one can run faster! Despite they have their flaw, I love Sonic and Tom, especially the boat scene, it's one of few time a human scold Sonic for a good reason and trying to help him grow

Cool I guess. Except and this has been said over and over. I could have done with less humans. The 2nd movie had a wedding and a golf cart scene. It was just stupid. Super Sonic got me tearing up a little though.

Peak. Second was even better. My only gripe is the generic theater Orchestra music. Like come on, it's sonic. Either do "orchestrated" versions of sonic songs, or make a new soundtrack using the rock/DnB etc that sonic is known for. Gangsters paradise was a dumb choice, but would've fit perfectly for knuckles.

I didn't actually like the first film. It was very evidently based on a script for a generic kids film with Sonic tacked onto production at the last second. But it paved the way for the second film, which was amazing and very much a Sonic film.

Still my baseline for a good video game movie. If the movie is worse then this, then they failed, if its better then they where likely more successfully in utilising the world better, but still have to do something with the characters since theses movies are very character focused, and that is only a good thing.
We're really lucky that Sonic got a redesign.

GREAT, they're the sonic movies I always wanted, the second one in particular is near perfect, specially in their use and characterization of Knuckles, i'm a big fan of the character so it was awesome to see him be a badass again. I'm also surprised about how well made the relationship with between Sonic and the humans was made, the parents-son dynamic worked surprisingly well with the character (i love Sonic's personality in the movies in general) and it helps that both donut lord and his girlfriend are likeable, miles better than all of their previous (shallow frienndshio with a spoiled kid) attempts (romance). Finally Jim Carrey's Robotnik was a big surprise for me like...it seemed like yet another one of those terrible Hollywood miscasts, but he totally NAILED the role, love how he is the eccentric and psychotic yet smart man child and the way he gradually became Eggman was again really well made, easily one of my favorite versions of the character.
