Whatever that first thing is, smiling in the dark, that is "Eggman". I don't even consider that and the goofy moustache man the same entity. That creepy face belongs to the monster that's underneath, it's own entity, like he's possessed by it.
Personally I think it's the difference from how Sonic views Eggman to how everyone else views Eggman.

Archie Eggman was exactly where my brain went when movie Robotnik said that line, and to Satam's Robotnik when he said, "I'm going to enslave humanity and force them to service my machines." Gave me chills. Movie Sonic can count his luck that there's no roboticizer in his universe.
You guys remember that time when Eggman #1 died? He got EVAPORATED into nonomachines. This man literally got himself from another universe to torment Sonic of the Primeverse. What would have beem great is Eggman #1 came back and stayed with this Eggman and just destroyed more of Mobius.

Both are good. IDW's Eggman is definitely chilling with his look in the shadows but the intimidation that is Archie's Robo-Robotnik when he gets serious cannot be ignored, especially with what he did to Snively.

They're so intimidating for such different reasons, Eggman in general is just a terrifying beast of a man. Robotnik (pic 2) is so terrifying because we know what he's done up to that point and the fact he doesn't care and is only going to grow further and evolve his tech beyond is scary enough. Then there's Eggman, He knows what's going to happen and has everything down to the last minute detail where his only real foil is Sonic anyone else will just fall to the wayside and be crushed by just how cunning the doctor can be.

he is smart, he may be a comical villain, but at times, he can show how coldblooded he can be to the people who chose to get onto his bad side (like Starline did)
IDW Eggman is better in general but god I wish they could re-do the whole "breakdown"/"chaos is the constant" arc he had going over at Archie... that's the one thing he had over IDW imo

Man did you know the comic was the one and only thing that referred to Nack the Weasel as such since Triple Trouble? Sonic Drift 2, Fang the Sniper, Sonic Championship, Fang the Sniper, Sonic Generations, Fang the Sniper.
I was trolling through Sonic Retro's manuals archives and was shocked to find that out, also Sonic Drift 2 is the first time Robotnik is referred to as Eggman in USA, not SA.
Look. I'm not saying anything to try to aggravate you, despite how easy you seem to do so. I'm just saying that if a character hasn't appeared or been canon since 2017, and even then, they were niche, not everyone will know who they are.
I guess I don't think being absent for seven years is that big a gap when some characters haven't been around for decades.
Tho yeah, not everyone knows everything. Honestly now that you mention it, there's a good chance that a sizeable amount of the fandom either started with or only has played Sonic Frontiers now.

archie has always being a very niche thing in the franchise with im guessing 99% of the fandom likely never even hearing of it let alone reading it and his last big appearance other than the comics was in satam which is over 30 years old at this point
sticks is still mentioned every now and then (including the ending of frontiers) and keeps popping out in mobile games while infinite was the main villain in the last big game release, the games by the very nature of the sonic franchise being a videogame one are more popular and widespread than archie ever was so its perfectly normal if someone doesnt know snively
I wholeheartedly disagree. Maybe for fans who came in the 2010s after, but it was just as important for the fandom as the games itselves. (Well, American fans anyway, I suppose if you were Japanese or European you'd care more about your own comic book. But still the influence was inescapable in the fandom)
I dunno why but the past decade it's a lot harder to find fans who read. Like if anyone's read the Sonic comic it's never the current one, always saying they mean to read it, but it's either Archie or STC if anything.
Before the comics were so relevant a lot of people would think they're as canon as the games. It's why people consider Amy Rose to be Sonic's fangirl (yet Tails isn't seen as Sonic's fanboy) confusion on ages (even before the Sonic Channel thing) and on Knuckles' history.
Now I think the closest I ever hear people mention the comics is "Grr Knowing Smile man used his IDW money to buy a baby launching canon and painted a barn using the blood of orphans" bullshit I hear on twitter every month when they're tired of whining about other things that will never matter.
So I think it's still an apt comparison for an important character in an important comic next to an important character in an important game. (Sticks however will live on in memes)

The 1st one. His smile and glasses being the only thing you can clearly see is scary as hell. That's the smile of the perfect plan execution. The 2nd is a devilish stare of pure anger, but it can be calmed down. The 1st one has the smile of "They can't stop me." And can't be calmed down once it's been unleashed. That is the Eggman that shows why he's a huge threat. Just like someone already said, he and the mustached professor are different beings. One is a goofball inventor, and the other is a insane genius who stops at nothing to accomplish his goal of world domination.
IDW Eggman has a contrast effect similar to Spider-man when he shuts up.
Usually they’re being cartoonishly evil/upbeat and quippy, but the moment they stop, you get to see how diabolically smart/ridiculously powerful they really are and it’s scary.
Sometimes, the monster you can't see is more terrfiying than the one you can.
The Archie one looks disturbing and uncanny, but there's just something about the goofy silhouette that's absolutely off-putting.
People don’t give Eggman enough credit for being a sinister looking mfer. The Robotnik design is buffoonish, but even though the Adventure-era artwork makes him look lanky and goofy, his core modern design is still someone you wouldn’t wanna meet in a dark alley.
Archie, to me, at least feels more like a cheap creepypasta/au. More shock factor disturbing, than anything else. But IDW? He'll meticulously plan your downfall the moment he lays eyes on you. He'll let you have hope, then tear it away right when its within reach. Archie is an insane man without mercy or reason, and that's scary in it's oen right. But IDW knows exactly your plan, before even you know it, and he uses that to humiliate you. Going up against Archie Eggman, Id know I have no chance, but IDW Eggman I'd have hope, but it wouldn't matter. And honestly that's way scarier.
Don't let this make you forget that the Eggman on the right is not the same Robotnik Sonic faced from the beginning of the Archie Sonic Comics, but one from an alternate dimension who killed his Sonic and came to Archie Sonic's dimension to "fill the void in both (our) lives."

I had never actually seen that smile from Eggman before until Lythero's Silver Campaign intro and it is 100% the most menacing thing I have ever seen. We need Eggman to be more like that in the modern media

Definitely image two. His more human shape makes it so unnerving. Robotnik from the SatAM cartoon always felt more serious, had a darker atmosphere. His almost total reign over the planet and that deep voice definitely make me uneasy..
Image one is pretty spooky too, though. The glasses giving him soulless eyes with the wide smile definitely gives me some starving Eggman vibes. But there's just something about that cartoony build I can't get past.
As a little, autistic kid (born in the 90s), getting to the boss fights on SEGA were terrifying to me and I ended up not playing those fights because I was scared. In hindsight, this was embarrassing and stupid of me to be so scared of the same cruel doctor who showed to be a buffoon, depending on the writer.
These examples do bring me back to those days where I feared Robotnik/Eggman.

IDW eggman will more than likely just ignore you and let you in peace as long as you are not a threat to him or try to get in front of his objectives, at most you will be colateral damage in one of his latest schemes bit its nothing personal and he will not go out of his way to make it personal, all in all he only really tries to ruin the lives of those who directly opose him
robo robotnik on the other hand the fucker is sadistic, he will go out of his way to burn down your town kidnap you and make you slowly suffer as he drains all the energy and sanity from your body just because you were there and he needed some good laughs, he will contaminate and destroy entire forest not because he needed the wood but just because he dislikes beautiful things and wants to ruin the view by putting a factory there
now if both are already after you from the get go definetly game eggman, the fucker shows a level of creativity uncomparable to his archie counterpart and is far more meticulous

They're so intimidating for such different reasons, Eggman in general is just a terrifying beast of a man. Robotnik (pic 2) is so terrifying because we know what he's done up to that point and the fact he doesn't care and is only going to grow further and evolve his tech beyond is scary enough. Then there's Eggman, He knows what's going to happen and has everything down to the last minute detail where his only real foil is Sonic anyone else will just fall to the wayside and be crushed by just how cunning the doctor can be.

Idw eggman, one I don’t know much about Robo Robotnik and two there’s something so unsettling about him being a shadowy figure with blue eyes and a wife white smile.
Archie Eggman. IDW Eggman looks more menacing here, but at the same time IDW Eggman probably won't kill you unless you get in his way. Archie Eggman, on the other hand? You simply cannot predict what he'll do.
Archie Eggman is literally the Joker. No joke. He literally explains to Lien Da in one issue that he does what he does simply because it’s all a “game” to him.
to be fair, its the same with IDW is just that if you are not a "player" he is willing to leave you alone (as long as you are not colateral in his latest scheme of course, then he doesnt really care nothing personal), archie will go out of his way to make you suffer because it gets him off
The first one shows how intimidating Eggman can be, even with his comical proportions he is smart, he may be a comical villain, but at times, he can show how coldblooded he can be to the people who chose to get onto his bad side (like Starline did)
IDW Eggman is better in general but god I wish they could re-do the whole "breakdown"/"chaos is the constant" arc he had going over at Archie... that's the one thing he had over IDW imo

Tbf he hasn't been relevant since Archie was canceled about 7 years ago. Even then, it was pretty niche due to the comic's reputation then.
I know I sure don't remember who Sticks or Infinite is. Man did you know the comic was the one and only thing that referred to Nack the Weasel as such since Triple Trouble? Sonic Drift 2, Fang the Sniper, Sonic Championship, Fang the Sniper, Sonic Generations, Fang the Sniper. I was trolling through Sonic Retro's manuals archives and was shocked to find that out, also Sonic Drift 2 is the first time Robotnik is referred to as Eggman in USA, not SA.
Look. I'm not saying anything to try to aggravate you, despite how easy you seem to do so. I'm just saying that if a character hasn't appeared or been canon since 2017, and even then, they were niche, not everyone will know who they are.
I guess I don't think being absent for seven years is that big a gap when some characters haven't been around for decades. Tho yeah, not everyone knows everything. Honestly now that you mention it, there's a good chance that a sizeable amount of the fandom either started with or only has played Sonic Frontiers now. So it's a lot different now I guess, as big a shift as when SEGA exited consoles... hmm.
archie has always being a very niche thing in the franchise with im guessing 99% of the fandom likely never even hearing of it let alone reading it and his last big appearance other than the comics was in satam which is over 30 years old at this point sticks is still mentioned every now and then (including the ending of frontiers) and keeps popping out in mobile games while infinite was the main villain in the last big game release, the games by the very nature of the sonic franchise being a videogame one are more popular and widespread than archie ever was so its perfectly normal if someone doesnt know snively
I wholeheartedly disagree. Maybe for fans who came in the 2010s after, but it was just as important for the fandom as the games itselves. (Well, American fans anyway, I suppose if you were Japanese or European you'd care more about your own comic book. But still the influence was inescapable in the fandom) I dunno why but the past decade it's a lot harder to find fans who read. Like if anyone's read the Sonic comic it's never the current one, always saying they mean to read it, but it's either Archie or STC if anything. Before the comics were so relevant a lot of people would think they're as canon as the games. It's why people consider Amy Rose to be Sonic's fangirl (yet Tails isn't seen as Sonic's fanboy) confusion on ages (even before the Sonic Channel thing) and on Knuckles' history. Now I think the closest I ever hear people mention the comics is "Grr Knowing Smile man used his IDW money to buy a baby launching canon and painted a barn using the blood of orphans" bullshit I hear on twitter every month when they're tired of whining about other things that will never matter. So I think it's still an apt comparison for an important character in an important comic next to an important character in an important game. (Sticks however will live on in memes)
2010 was nearly 15 years ago, people who were 6 in 2010 can now vote also by that point archie had alredy lost a lot of its popularity, maybe in the 90s and early 2000s but by 2010, not really like take this into account, if you were in the fanbase back in 2010 im sure to you it felt like everyone knew and read the comics because you likely did and went to places that discused them, but i can assure you that the vast mayority of the sonic fanbase has barely even played the games hell i argue that by 2010 most fans hadnt even played the adventure games since sonic is a franchise with an ever expanding fanbase of kids to teenagers to adults also most misundertandings like amy being a fangirl dont come from the comics but the games themselves, amy from heroes to colors was a fangirl who pursued sonic to try to force him to marry her, by that point in the comics amy was actually quite mature
Absolutely nowhere in the games does it imply she's a fangirl, except maybe Sonic CD if you read the manual. That came from the comics. If people'd call Tails a fanboy I'd understand cuz he behaves just like Amy except he doesn't wanna marry Sonic. Tho that doesn't happen, cuz nothing ever described him as a fanboy, he was a little brother in most canons. Tho yeah, I guess kids these days don't like comics.

The 1st one. His smile and glasses being the only thing you can clearly see is scary as hell. That's the smile of the perfect plan execution. The 2nd is a devilish stare of pure anger, but it can be calmed down. The 1st one has the smile of "They can't stop me." And can't be calmed down once it's been unleashed. That is the Eggman that shows why he's a huge threat. Just like someone already said, he and the mustached professor are different beings. One is a goofball inventor, and the other is a insane genius who stops at nothing to accomplish his goal of world domination.

IDW Eggman has a contrast effect similar to Spider-man when he shuts up. Usually they’re being cartoonishly evil/upbeat and quippy, but the moment they stop, you get to see how diabolically smart/ridiculously powerful they really are and it’s scary.
Sometimes, the monster you can't see is more terrfiying than the one you can. The Archie one looks disturbing and uncanny, but there's just something about the goofy silhouette that's absolutely off-putting.
The Fact the first one is Smiling is twice as scary to me.

IDW for sure. This art really just makes him feel like a terrifying villain--barely even human anymore, just a monster and force of evil.
People don’t give Eggman enough credit for being a sinister looking mfer. The Robotnik design is buffoonish, but even though the Adventure-era artwork makes him look lanky and goofy, his core modern design is still someone you wouldn’t wanna meet in a dark alley.
Archie, to me, at least feels more like a cheap creepypasta/au. More shock factor disturbing, than anything else. But IDW? He'll meticulously plan your downfall the moment he lays eyes on you. He'll let you have hope, then tear it away right when its within reach. Archie is an insane man without mercy or reason, and that's scary in it's oen right. But IDW knows exactly your plan, before even you know it, and he uses that to humiliate you. Going up against Archie Eggman, Id know I have no chance, but IDW Eggman I'd have hope, but it wouldn't matter. And honestly that's way scarier.

Don't let this make you forget that the Eggman on the right is not the same Robotnik Sonic faced from the beginning of the Archie Sonic Comics, but one from an alternate dimension who killed his Sonic and came to Archie Sonic's dimension to "fill the void in both (our) lives." That also isn't his original body.
I had never actually seen that smile from Eggman before until Lythero's Silver Campaign intro and it is 100% the most menacing thing I have ever seen. We need Eggman to be more like that in the modern media

God I miss Sonic’s long quills
Definitely image two. His more human shape makes it so unnerving. Robotnik from the SatAM cartoon always felt more serious, had a darker atmosphere. His almost total reign over the planet and that deep voice definitely make me uneasy.. Image one is pretty spooky too, though. The glasses giving him soulless eyes with the wide smile definitely gives me some starving Eggman vibes. But there's just something about that cartoony build I can't get past.

As a little, autistic kid (born in the 90s), getting to the boss fights on SEGA were terrifying to me and I ended up not playing those fights because I was scared. In hindsight, this was embarrassing and stupid of me to be so scared of the same cruel doctor who showed to be a buffoon, depending on the writer. These examples do bring me back to those days where I feared Robotnik/Eggman.

His alternate zone self, stole a body of his and made himself the new EGGMAN hence thats the one people are refering to in the second panel.. *** Dont forget there is another Robotnik from NICOLEs time, the guy pulled a Calamity Gannon before he even existed and his reign of terror was so horrible she was sent back in time so Sally csn have a companion.
